Getting Around
Essential Johannesburg Experiences
City Tours

Johannesburg, more popularly referred to as Joburg, is a Gold Rush city founded in 1886. "Town", as Joburgers often refer to the historic city centre is easily walkable and defined by its energetic and colourful street life. Busy pavements are filled with a multi-cultural mix of people and all the while hawkers ‘hustle’, cross-continental traders shop, white-collar workers rush between offices and the streets hum with an ambitiously ‘Afropolitan’ atmosphere. Braamfontein is the gateway to the city and the home of Wits University campus, making it a student neighbourhood known for its busy nightlife, great coffee and cool street fashion. Newtown, one of the city's cultural precincts, is just across the Nelson Mandela Bridge. We don't recommend walking there as it crosses a busy taxi route. A must-visit Newtown and its neighbour Ferreirasdorp, home to the cool 1 Fox Precinct, are distinctive for their industrial architecture and were key sites in the city's early mining history. To the west of Newtown is the Indian heart of Joburg, Fordsburg. Roughly speaking the City Centre spreads out from Gandhi Square with the immediate surrounds filled with examples of Victorian and Edwardian architecture. To the north-west of the Carlton Centre, the bustling Fashion District is where locals and shoppers from across the continent come to buy and trade fabrics. To the east lies the regenerated industrial neighbourhood referred to as the Maboneng Precinct and the stadiums and sporting facilities of the Ellis Park Precinct. Beyond this is ‘Makers Valley’ in Troyeville and Lorentzville, a popular place for artists studios and artisans workshops. From Braamfontein you are a 10- minute drive from leafy RIchmond, Milpark and Melville. Often referred to as Joburg’s ‘bohemian’ neighbourhood, Melville is known for its quirky shops, friendly cafés and fun nightlife.
GAUTRAIN The Gautrain (pronounced ‘How-train’) rapid rail service links Joburg, Pretoria and O.R. Tambo International Airport via two lines. To use the Gautrain buy a Gold Card at the station. Load it with a minimum of R25. The Park Station Gautrain station opens at 05:09 and closes at 21:30. To get to O.R. Tambo International Airport take the train to Sandton and change to the airport line. The last train to O.R. Tambo leaves Sandton at 21:04, the first at 04:50. Each station is served by a Gautrain bus network linking to nearby suburbs (Gautrain buses run on weekdays only). From the Park Station Gautrain catch the J1 Parktown bus to Constitution Hill and Wits Medical Campus or the J2 CBD bus. The first Gautrain bus leaves Park Station at 06:16 and the last at 20:26. TAXIS AND UBER Meter taxi cabs are not to be confused with South African 'taxis', the ubiquitous commuter minibuses. Popular smartphone services include Uber and Bolt, or call Zebra Cab (tel. +27 86 110 5105, zebracabs.co.za). CRIME AND SAFETY Safety in any major city is about common sense, information and awareness, and Joburg is no exception. Pay attention to your surroundings, plan your route before setting off, try not to look like a tourist or carry unnecessary valuables. Book an Uber or taxi to get around at night and a local guide if exploring the City Centre for the first time. Be particularly wary of so-called ‘phone snatchers’ known to grab phones from people using them on the streets. If you need to make a call, it is best to do this while inside a building. Only visit Yeoville, Hillbrow, Berea and the area around Joubert Park with a local guide.
