Welcome to September in Arizona

Our Time to Shine

Whether you are a native Arizonian, a transplant, temporary resident attending college, or a snow bird, like our weather, this is our time to shine.

When I started ION Arizona, the population of Phoenix was 3.3 million. Today, Phoenix metro has over 5.1 million residents and growing. That’s almost 2 million new residents. And it shows. While traffic, property values, rent, homelessness and, yes, crime has increased, the good out ways the bad. More arts, concerts, restaurants, entertainment, more festivals, more fun. Use ION as your guide to our ever growing LGBTQ+ community. Sign up for our weekly e-mail upcoming events email at www.ionaz.com so you don’t miss a thing.

A lot has changed since our humble beginnings. In 2001, there were 28 gay bars. That’s not a miss print. All offering their own unique style and theme. It only made sense to have a magazine dedicated to the nightlife scene. Today, only a handful exist but most are thriving. Today, we promote a healthy, active lifestyle while helping people feel and look their best. Check out transformatION, exploratION, medicatION and nutritION features in this and future issues.

We are in the final stages of creating version 2.0 of the ION Arizona App. We now have almost 9000 downloads and hope to have 10,000 by Phoenix Pride. It is a fun, easy to use guide of our entire community featuring upcoming events, mobile cams, weather, news, sports and entertainment, all in your pants 24/7. The new version adds geo fencing, share every page, send your own push notifications, realtime business hours, customer reviews, directions, YouTube videos and quick links to everything LGBTQ+. Download it today using the QR code on the cover of every issue of ION or go to the Apple or Google Play stores.

While we strive for creative excellence, unification, acceptance, we value your input. Let me your thoughts and ideas on how we can make a better community and a better magazine.

Take care, play safe, get tested and for God’s sake, be good to each other.

Canine Couture: When Dogs Become Divas,

Courtesy of Lugari Pet Salon

Every November, Scottsdale turns into the place where horses, high fashion, and high spirits collide, the Bentley Scottsdale Polo Championships. But while the polo ponies are galloping and the champagne is flowing, one runway show has become the unexpected star of the weekend: the Canine Couture Fashion Show, produced by the glam gurus at Lugari Pet Salon.

It’s the one event where the words “Best in Show” mean sequins, bow ties, and wigs, not Westminster obedience drills. And thanks to Lugari Pet Salon, the pups are not only pampered but polished to perfection.

A

Lugari Legacy of Style

Lugari Pet Salon, founded by Ivan Lugo in 2017, isn’t your typical groomer. Lugo has been styling pets since the late ’90s and has built Lugari into a place where grooming meets artistry. Inspired by Japanese precision grooming, Lugari’s stylists sculpt fur like couture designers sculpt fabric. Their philosophy? Every pet deserves to feel like a star and every owner deserves to see them shine. The Canine Couture runway is the perfect extension of that ethos. Instead of just making pets “presentable,” Lugari creates moments where they are celebrated, applauded, and adored.

Pawprints on the Runway

The show itself takes place at WestWorld of Scottsdale during the Polo Party weekend, this year on Saturday and Sunday, November 8–9, 2025. Dogs of every breed, age, and size trot down a 200yard runway while thousands of spectators cheer them on between chukkers of polo.

The categories are as fabulous as the competitors:

• Bow Tie Stud for the dapper gentlemen

• Fancy FiFi for the glamorous ladies

• Best Costume, where imagination reigns supreme

• And of course, Best in Show, the crown jewel

Winners receive trophies and cash prizes, but the real prize is the roar of the crowd and the photos that flood Instagram within seconds.

Unforgettable Looks from Past Years

If you think this is just a parade of pooches in sweaters, think again. Past competitors have pulled off looks that rival anything at Fashion Week. One Chihuahua strutted the grass in a glittering mermaid tail complete with a seashell purse, while a regal Great Dane earned gasps in a sweeping Dickensian cape and top hat. A French bulldog once donned a full Elvis jumpsuit, sequins, cape, and all, while a pair of matching Dachshunds rolled down the runway in tiny tuxedos, sipping from faux champagne flutes strapped to their harnesses.

The audience, equal parts polo enthusiasts and dog lovers, loses it every time. Screams of “Yaaas!” and “Werk!” are as common as barks and camera clicks.

Backstage: Organized Chaos and Doggie Glam

Behind the curtain, Lugari stylists are in full command. Blow dryers hum, tiny claws are polished, and last-minute accessories are secured with the care of red-carpet stylists pinning couture gowns. Nervous owners crouch with lint rollers, while handlers practice “walk and turn” routines with their furry models.

“Every dog has its own personality, and our job is to make that shine,” says Lugo. “Whether that means a pom-pom tail, rhinestones, or just the perfect cut, we want them to feel as confident as their owners do when they step onto that runway.”

The energy is electric. Imagine the backstage of a drag pageant, only with chew toys and water bowls.

Why It Matters

The Canine Couture show is more than cute costumes. It’s a reminder of how pets connect us, bring us joy, and deserve to be celebrated. Lugari’s leadership in producing the event highlights the salon’s role as a community builder, not just a business.

At the Polo Party, you’ll find yourself sitting next to a CEO, a college student, and a 6-year-old, all cheering for a pug in a tutu. It’s fashion, but it’s also togetherness, and Lugari is at the center of making that magic happen.

Showtime: How to Attend

The Canine Couture Runway Show happens both Saturday and Sunday during the Bentley Scottsdale Polo Championships, November 8–9, 2025, at WestWorld of Scottsdale. Tickets: Required for entry to the Polo Party, available now at thepoloparty. com. Prices start at $45 for General Admission, with luxe VIP hospitality tents, bottle service, and shaded lounges for those who prefer their dog couture with chilled rosé. Registration: Canine Couture competitors must check in at Lugari’s Vendor Row booth before 12 PM the day of the show. All dogs must be on leash, vaccinated, and fabulous. Extras: Between shows, explore vendor tents, sip champagne, catch polo matches, and people-watch, because Scottsdale brings just as much fashion off the runway as on it.

Final Bark

The Bentley Scottsdale Polo Championships may be “the best polo event in the world,” but it’s Lugari Pet Salon’s Canine Couture Runway Show that steals hearts. With wagging tails, glittering outfits, and the undeniable bond between pets and their people, this event proves that glamour is best served with a little fur on it.

So grab your ticket, glam up your pup, and get ready to witness fashion that’s truly unfur-gettable.

From Raising Hell to Building Home: The Story of the PGFFL

On a dusty field in Dallas in 2006, we walked out for our very first Gay Bowl appearance. A group of Phoenix athletes, nervous but determined, laced up our cleats and called ourselves the Hellraisers. We were scared — not just of the competition, but of what it meant to step into a space that was still so new for LGBTQ+ athletes.

But the moment the whistle blew, fear turned into fire. We weren’t just another team; we were Phoenix’s statement to the league, and we were ready to raise a little hell.

Photography by: LeakedGlass Model: Kyle Dallas

A Spark in the Desert

Dallas was only the beginning. The Hellraisers soon showed up in New York (2007) and Salt Lake City (2008), carrying the Phoenix banner proudly. That same year, we launched our own local Hellraisers league, bringing organized LGBTQ+ football home to Arizona.

Weekends quickly became more than football. For many of us, it was the first time we could show up fully ourselves — no hiding, no apologies. We played, we laughed, we partied, and we built something bigger than we even realized at the time.

And we proved we belonged. Between 2009 and 2011, Phoenix swept Chicago Pride Bowls II, III, and IV. At Gay Bowl, we rose fast: 3rd place in 2009, a four-way tie for 1st in 2011 (Houston’s rainout year), and a heartbreaking 50–51 overtime loss in 2014 in Philadelphia, still remembered as the highest-scoring championship game ever. Those weren’t just scores. They were moments that told the world Phoenix was here to stay.

From Team to League

The vision was always bigger than one team. Shawn Rea sparked the movement, but it was co-founders Rich “Daddy Dash” Serrano and Jared Garduño who helped shape the path forward — making sure Phoenix football was not only competitive but also a safe haven.

By 2018, we had officially grown into a 501(c)3 nonprofit, the Phoenix Gay Flag Football League (PGFFL). What started with a single group of Hellraisers now fills fields twice a year:

• Fall Fridays under the lights, September–December

• Spring Saturdays in the sunshine, February–May Games are short but fierce — two 25-minute halves with a quick halftime. Every season runs an open draft, mixing veterans and rookies together. It means no cliques, no closed doors — just football, friendship, and fun.

Our Champions: The Sponsors

The PGFFL is powered not just by players, but by the sponsors who believe in us.

• Arizona Cardinals – yes, the NFL itself standing behind our league.

• Spectrum Medical

• Kobalt (since 2008)

• Charlie’s Phoenix

• Neighborhood Ventures

• one•n•ten

• Boycott Bar

• Stacy’s @ Melrose

• BodyAware

With their help — plus countless volunteer hours — the PGFFL has become more than just sports. We’ve grown into a community pillar, giving back through fundraising, outreach, and partnerships that matter.

Gay Bowl XXV: San Diego

Now the road takes us to San Diego, October 2–6, 2025 for Gay Bowl XXV. What began in 2002 with only three teams (Boston, LA, San Francisco) has exploded into more than 100 nationwide.

And Phoenix is rolling deeper than ever. This year, we’re sending four Men’s teams, four Women’s+ teams, and eight of Phoenix’s finest officials. It will be the largest delegation we’ve ever taken to a Gay Bowl, players and referees combined. Not just showing up — showing out.

A Home at Last

Today the PGFFL is about so much more than football. As Commissioner Johnny Loaiza says:

“When I found my community with the PGFFL, it definitely felt like I was finding love, passion, and a growth for something new. It feels like home for a lot of people.”

That’s the win that matters. From that first dusty field in Dallas to today’s thriving nonprofit, the PGFFL has always been about belonging. We’ve built a place where everyone is welcome, where competition is fierce but community is stronger, and where raising a little hell is still part of the fun.

What If Your Plateau Isn’t Physical?

f you are over 30 and feel like your workouts are not working anymore, here is the truth: it might not be your body that is stuck—it might be your why.

At Rafalogie Fit, I work with busy professionals who are burned out, plateaued, or just tired of spinning their wheels. As both a fitness and life coach, I use a tool called the Wheel of Life to help clients look beyond reps and macros and reconnect with purpose.

Here is a quick exercise you can do now: Rate each of these areas in your life from 1 to 10—Health, Career, Relationships, Fun, Finances, Personal Growth, Environment, and Purpose. Now look at your lowest score.

Ask yourself: What would a 10 look like in that area? What is one small action I could take this week to move toward it?

Often, the real reason people fall off track with fitness is not a lack of willpower. It is a lack of alignment. When your lifestyle, stress, and goals do not match up, progress stalls.

Once we find your why, we build a fitness plan that works with your life, not against it. We train for strength, energy, and confidence. We eat high-protein meals that make sense for real schedules. And we move forward with clarity.

Because sustainable change does not come from punishment. It comes from purpose.

West Clear Creek: Arizona’s Hidden Canyon Escape

A refreshing high-country destination for hikers and campers in Happy Jack

About the Author

Peter Michelsen is an adventurer who spends much of his free time exploring Arizona’s canyons, forests, and trails. His memoir, The Boy Who Walked Himself Home, tells the story of his own path through hardship and healing. Available on Amazon and Apple Books.

Arizona’s wilderness always finds a way to surprise me, and my latest trip to West Clear Creek in Happy Jack was no exception. Sitting at 7,000 feet in elevation, this area feels like a hidden escape tucked away in the cool ponderosa pines. The days hover in the comfortable 80s, and nights dip into the 60s—a perfect balance for both adventure and rest. Unlike the scorching desert below, this mountain setting feels like another world entirely.

West Clear Creek itself is a canyon carved deep into the Mogollon Rim, dropping about 600 feet from the rim to the water below. Its walls shift in color between red and gray, enclosing a stream of crystal-clear water that winds through the bottom. The canyon stretches for roughly 40 miles, but even sampling a small section of it is enough to feel its magic.

Hiking here is different than most trails. Much of the route winds directly through the shallow creek, so you’re constantly stepping from sun-warmed stones into refreshing currents. On hot days, this feels like nature’s air conditioning. For those looking for a longer adventure, backpacking down into the canyon and camping overnight is a popular option. I usually keep it simple: I car camp up on top, where the forest opens to big skies and starry nights, then make a day trip down into the canyon. It’s the best way to keep cool and still return to the comfort of campfire evenings among the pines.

Every trip to West Clear Creek reminds me why I love exploring Arizona. From high-elevation forests to red-walled canyons and flowing water, it’s a place where peace and adventure meet. Out here, I feel both grounded and renewed—carving memories as lasting as the canyon itself.

If You Go

• Location: Near Happy Jack, Arizona

• Best season: Late spring through early fall

• Cost: Free access, no permits required

• Camping: Backpacking in the canyon or dispersed camping at the rim

• Access: A high-clearance SUV or truck is recommended; forest roads can be rough

“Honey Heat, Golden Harvest”

In Melrose, you know summer ’s winding down when emerald gold figs start showing up like little jewels from the neighbors’ trees. This flatbread is my way of honoring that handoff between seasons—sweet figs, a drizzle of hot honey, tangy crumbled goat cheese, and just enough red onion bite to keep things interesting.

It’s the kind of dish that feels like a goldenhour toast to the last lazy days of summer while giving a wink toward autumn’s cozy nights. Quick to make, fun to share, and bold enough to spark conversation—it’s Chef of Melrose style at its finest.

ION FABULANCE

September rolls in with Virgo season holding a clipboard and asking why your life is a mess. It’s giving “new beginnings” energy, but also “don’t talk to me until I’ve had coffee.” The back-to-school vibes are strong, whether you’re actually in school or just buying new stationery for the aesthetic. Mid-month, Libra season sweeps in with a flirty little smirk, balancing the seriousness with romance, drama, and questionable decisions. Expect fresh starts, bold declarations, and at least one situation you pretend was “totally planned.”

♈ ARIES (Mar 21 – Apr 19)

You’re charging into September like it owes you money. Great for ambition, not so great for patience. Slow down, babe. Virgo season wants precision, not a speedrun of your to-do list.

♉ TAURUS (Apr 20 – May 20)

ION HOMOSCOPES

September has you craving stability, but also… snacks. You can have both. Just remember that self-care isn’t only baked goods, it’s also blocking toxic people. Bake the pie, send the text.

♊ GEMINI (May 21 – Jun 20)

Your calendar is packed, your phone is buzzing, and your brain? Running twelve tabs at once. Try focusing on one thing, preferably something that doesn’t involve accidental oversharing in the group chat.

♋ CANCER (Jun 21 – Jul 22)

You’re in nesting mode, which is cute until you realize you’ve ghosted half your friends. September wants balance, stay cozy, but also leave the house. The world misses your emotional chaos.

♌ LEO (Jul 23 – Aug 22)

You’re still riding that Leo season high, but Virgo season says it’s time to tidy up. Keep the confidence, lose the clutter. Your crown will still fit after some organization.

♍ VIRGO (Aug 23 – Sept 22)

Happy birthday, perfectionist icon! September is your month to shine, just don’t turn into a full-time critic. Focus on celebrating yourself instead of micromanaging everyone’s existence. (Even if they are wrong.)

♎ LIBRA (Sept 23 – Oct 22)

Your season kicks off late September, and you’re ready to flirt, finesse, and steal the spotlight. Just remember: you can’t charm your way out of every messy situation. (Okay… maybe most.)

♏ SCORPIO (Oct 23 – Nov 21)

You’re feeling extra observant this month, clocking everyone’s secrets before they speak. Use your powers wisely, or at least dramatically. Your mystery is magnetic, but don’t forget to actually connect with people.

♐ SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22 – Dec 21)

Your wanderlust is acting up again, but September wants you to slow down and think before you book that trip. Do your research, adventure is more fun when you’re not lost immediately.

♑ CAPRICORN (Dec 22 – Jan 19)

Work mode is activated, but September wants you to mix in a little play. Schedule a fun night out. Yes, in your planner. Yes, with color coding.

♒ AQUARIUS (Jan 20 – Feb 18)

Your ideas are brilliant, but your followthrough is… questionable. September gives you a burst of focus, so use it before Libra season distracts you with pretty people and shiny things.

♓ PISCES (Feb 19 – Mar 20)

You’re daydreaming about fall romance, pumpkin spice, and knit sweaters. Cute. Just remember to handle your actual responsibilities before Libra season sweeps you into a whirlwind of candlelit chaos.
