Welcome to the new ION Arizona

Good News, Bad News

This year has been very challenging for our community including ION Arizona. Due to the Trump policies, cuts in LGBTQ+ grants and an overall uncertainty of the economy, many ION advertisers have cut their LGBTQ+ funding resulting in a 20% reduction in sales. After 4 years of profitability since COVID, we are forced to make some difficult changes in order to maintain the best LGBTQ+ publication in the county while keeping it free to you.

ION JUST JACK

First, the bad news. We will be moving our office out of midtown Phoenix after 24 years. It has just gotten too expensive to maintain the office. Second, we were forced to let go our longtime editor, Deon Brown. Deon has been a vital team member helping ION reach new heights for over 15 years. We wish Deon the best on his new journey. We also had to furlough a few contractors including Pup Lexxi and Danny Silvato. Thank you all for your hard work and dedication to ION and our community.

On the positive side, we have made some changes to the content with a new updated design. We will be adding several new features that you will love including a new medical, beautification, travel, sports, blast from the past, healthy cooking recipes features in addition to all the great guides and features you have come to use and love.

The ION Arizona app is growing like never before and is recession, pandemic and Trump proof. We will be launching version 2.0 at Phoenix Pride in October. The updated app, now with over 8,500 downloads, will have new features including one touch phone calling, directions, social media buttons, realtime open hours, ratings, the ability to share individual pages on multiple platforms and best of all, advertisers will be able to send push notifications to their app page followers. It will still feature upcoming events, party cams, local and LGBTQ+ news, and all of the businesses that support our community. The app is still FREE for users!

While these changes were painful and difficult, they are necessary to continue to maintain our mission of making Arizona THE place to live, work and play for LGBTQ+ community young and old, new and native residents as well as all gender identities. Enjoy the New ION Arizona Magazine. Support our advertisers so we can keep ION Arizona free for years to come.

Photography: LeakedGlass Model: Nick Patton

August in Arizona is basically Mother Nature’s way of saying, “Girl, stay inside.” And our photo feature, the dangerously handsome Nick Patton, is doing just that — riding out the triple-digit inferno like a pro. Why melt outside when you can turn your air-conditioned oasis into the hottest ticket in town? Nick knows the drill: set the mood, cue up a stack of sexy vinyl records, and let the real heat happen indoors.

Invite a few friends over — or that one friend who “accidentally” forgot their shirt — and turn it into an impromptu underwear party. Think chilled cocktails, playful banter, and maybe a little truth-or-dare if you’re feeling brave. Out there, the streets are sizzling… but in here, the AC is blasting, the music’s flowing, and the only thing overheating is the chemistry. Who says you can’t keep cool and heat things up at the same time?

Plateaued after 30... In this economy...?

Here’s How to Get

Unstuck

f you’ve been hitting the gym but not seeing results like you used to, you’re not alone and it’s not your fault. After 30, our metabolism slows, recovery takes longer, and the “eat less, move more” advice stops cutting it. The key? Smarter training and proteinforward nutrition.

First, ditch the idea that more time at the gym equals better results. It’s about training, not just exercising. Focus on resistance training 3–4x a week with progressive overload (gradually increasing weight or reps). Don’t just go through the motions, track your workouts, push yourself, and train with intention.

Next, make protein your priority. You’ve probably heard it before, but here’s a simple trick: if the grams of protein in a food are higher than the first two digits of the calorie count, it’s a high-protein win. For example, Costco’s Seasoned Grilled Salmon has 260 calories and 33g of protein since 33 is more than 26, it’s a go-to option.

And don’t skip rest. Sleep and

8 Week Program Before & After

recovery are when your body builds muscle and burns fat. Overtraining without rest just leads to burnout and more plateaus.

At Rafalogie Fit, I specialize in helping busy professionals over 30 break through these barriers. Whether you’ve plateaued, are short on time, or just need guidance, I create personalized fitness and nutrition plans that actually work with

your lifestyle. My approach blends smart hypertrophy training, habit coaching, and high-protein meal strategies that don’t involve eating plain chicken every day.

You don’t have to train like a 20-year-old to get back in shape. You just need a better plan and maybe a coach who’s been there.

EXPLORING ARIZONA with Peter Michelsen

Bartlettlake

Camping in Arizona is a breathtaking experience that connects you to some of the most stunning landscapes in the American Southwest. Whether you’re pitching a tent under the starry skies of the Sonoran Desert or parking an RV near a cool mountain lake, Arizona offers something truly magical for every nature lover.

The diversity of camping environments is unmatched. In the north, pinecovered forests in Flagstaff and the Mogollon Rim offer cool, shaded retreats with crisp mountain air and miles of trails. Farther south, desert oases like Saguaro National Park and Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument dazzle with giant cacti, colorful sunsets, and peaceful silence.

One of Arizona’s greatest treasures is its night sky. Many of its remote camping spots are recognized as dark-sky areas, making stargazing unforgettable. Watching the Milky Way stretch across the sky from a campfire circle is an experience that leaves a lasting impression.

Arizona also boasts iconic camping destinations like the Grand Canyon, where sunrise and sunset paint the canyon walls with vibrant oranges and purples. Near Sedona, red rock formations provide a dramatic backdrop for peaceful campsites surrounded by energy vortexes and sandstone trails.

Wildlife sightings—elk, deer, javelina, coyotes, even wild horses—add a thrilling layer of adventure. And in the spring, the desert blooms with wildflowers, turning the landscape into a tapestry of color.

Whether you crave solitude or family fun, Arizona’s campgrounds deliver. With clean facilities, wide-open public lands, and an outdoor-loving culture, it’s easy to see why campers return year after year.

Arizona camping is more than an escape—it’s a celebration of nature, color, and peace. It awakens the senses and feeds the soul. Once you’ve camped in Arizona, no other place quite compares.

Summer in Phoenix means fresh flavors, backyard herbs, and dishes that feel like sunshine. In the heart of the Melrose District — our city’s proud, vibrant “gayborhood” — I’ve built The Chef of Melrose around community, sustainability, and food that brings joy.

This Honey Goat Cheese & Peach Bruschetta is simple, stunning, and refreshing — perfect for warm days. With basil and heirloom tomatoes from my own garden, it’s a bite-sized way to celebrate the season.

This is the first of many recipes I’ll be sharing — from healthy favorites to comfort food and decadent desserts. Welcome to the table.

Our queer hearts just did a death drop! After 20 years of slaying the game, Noah’s Arc is back and more fabulous than ever. In this brand-new glow-up, Noah and Wade are preggers, with twins! But hold the gender-reveal confetti, because when both hotties get offered their dream jobs, it’s a battle of “Who’s the top… parent?” Expect baby drama, career chaos, and all the heart from our OG fam. Honestly? It’s the reunion we didn’t know we needed, but absolutely deserved. Yaaas, daddies!

Ponyboi

(Gathr / Fox Entertainment Studios)

Hold onto your heart-shaped lube, babes, Ponyboi is a wild, gritty Valentine’s Day fever dream dipped in Jersey sweat and queer chaos. River Gallo gives us an electrifying performance as an intersex laundromat worker-slash-sex worker (we love a multitasker!) caught between toxic love, chosen fam, and a mob mess that spirals real fast. Throw in a baby on the way, a shady dealer daddy played by Dylan O’Brien (yes, that Dylan), and you’ve got a queer thriller that’s equal parts messy, moving, and major. Total serve.

Queens of Drama (Les Reines

du drame) Watch on Fandango at Home

If Céline Dion had a baby with The Craft and raised it on queer rage and glitter, you’d get Queens of Drama This French fever dream of pop, punk, and pain follows Mimi and Billie, two vocal divas whose love story starts on a singing competition stage and spirals into queer chaos. With horror moments that channel Buffy and Evil Dead, and a glam-punk soundtrack that slaps harder than your ex’s new man, this one’s a deliciously messy love letter to queer resilience, rejection, and rhinestones.

FORBIDDEN BROADWAY

“Skinny Shots & Sexy Science: The Weight Loss Trifecta Every Gay Man Should Know About”

Let’s face it—abs aren’t made in the kitchen alone anymore. In a world where your reflection is Insta-ready but your metabolism is stuck in 2009, modern medicine is serving up a fierce triple threat: Semaglutide, Tirzepatide, and HCG

First up, Semaglutide (GLP-1)—the lean queen making headlines. Originally for diabetes, it now reigns supreme as a weekly injection that curbs hunger, improves insulin sensitivity, and helps you drop pounds without white-knuckling your cravings. Think: fewer midnight snacks, more shirtless selfies.

Then there’s Tirzepatide (GLP-1 + GLP-2 hybrid)—the Beyoncé of the peptide world. It’s newer, hotter, and rumored to melt fat faster with even fewer side effects. Patients report jaw-dropping results and a newfound love affair with their waistline.

And let’s not forget HCG—an oldie but a damn goodie. This hormone, when paired with a low-calorie protocol, revs up fat burning while preserving muscle mass. It’s not for everyone, but for the disciplined few, it’s a body-sculpting miracle.

These aren’t one-size-fits-all solutions, darling. Choosing the right option depends on your body goals, lifestyle, and health history. Whether you’re prepping for circuit season or just want to feel confident naked again, we tailor treatments to fit your fabulous.

ION FABULANCE

August is strutting in like it owns the place—because it kind of does. Leo season is in full diva mode, demanding attention, applause, and three outfit changes a day. Then, Virgo season creeps in with a clipboard and says, “Enough glitter, now let’s get your life together.” The vibes? A perfect cocktail of chaos and control. There’s heat, heart, and a lot of people pretending they don’t want to fall in love during a summer fling. Whether you’re burning bridges or just your shoulders, the stars have plenty to say. Let’s unpack the drama, shall we?

♈ ARIES (Mar 21 – Apr 19)

You’re radiating big fire sign energy this month—which is great, until you start arguing with your barista over oat milk. Take the passion down one notch, just for public safety.

♉ TAURUS (Apr 20 – May 20)

ION HOMOSCOPES

August has you craving luxury, naps, and someone to feed you grapes. Reality? Emails, heat, and commitment talk. Try compromising— like texting back and eating gelato. Balance is key, darling.

♊ GEMINI (May 21 – Jun 20)

You’re everyone’s favorite chaos gremlin this month, Gemini. The group chat is popping, and so is your love life. Just try to finish one convo before starting five more.

♋ CANCER (Jun 21 – Jul 22)

The emotional whirlwind continues, but now you’re doing it in cute outfits. August wants you to be bold—yes, even you, sweet little emotional support crab. Say what you feel (loudly, sis).

♌ LEO (Jul 23 – Aug 22)

It’s your season, Leo! You’re dramatic, radiant, and just slightly insufferable— and we love you for it. Soak in the attention your followers give you, but remember: birthdays don’t mean everyone becomes your sidekick.

♍ VIRGO (Aug 23 – Sept 22)

Your season starts late August, and suddenly your calendar is full, your skincare is thriving, and you’re judging everyone’s life choices. But nicely. Maybe keep the critique internal, babe.

♎ LIBRA (Sept 23 – Oct 22)

August is giving flirty with a dash of “I have no idea what I’m doing.” You’re glowing, indecisive, and full of charm. Love is circling. Say yes to the chaos.

♏ SCORPIO (Oct 23 – Nov 21)

You’re feeling spicy and mysterious— standard Scorpio programming. August turns the heat up, so lean into the sultry vibes but maybe stop testing your crush just for the thrill.

♐ SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22 – Dec 21)

August screams ADVENTURE, and so do you. You want road trips, beach flings, and spontaneous decisions. We love that. Just maybe bring sunscreen, a plan, and a tiny ounce of chill.

♑ CAPRICORN (Dec 22 – Jan 19)

You’re weirdly sentimental this month and nobody knows how to react. That’s okay. Take a break from the grind, cry at a rom-com, and allow yourself to just be. It’s cute.

♒ AQUARIUS (Jan 20 – Feb 18)

Your brain is vibing on a different planet, but your heart? It’s acting up. August wants you to feel more and think less. Start small: maybe a hug. Or a flirt.

♓ PISCES (Feb 19 – Mar 20)

You’re in a summertime haze of feelings, fantasies, and three-hour playlists curated for your crush. Just don’t forget to live in the moment outside your dreamy little mind. August is loud, extra, and a little emotionally unstable—just like your favorite queer icon. Stay dramatic, stay hydrated, and let Leo lead the way (until Virgo takes the wheel).
