ome five years ago, a couple in love found themselves wandering the streets of Paris in December. They went from café to bistro, brasserie to museum. Taking in the sites, enjoying the French fare and watching as the city went by. It was on that trip that James Lenhart and Tory johnson came up with an idea, perhaps it was to much Vin Rouge or maybe it was the intoxicating flavors of the perfect Beef Bourguignon, but they decided or rather vowed that they would bring those flavors back to Phoenix, Arizona, and that is just what they have done at Brasserie Melrose. Over the past five years, they have returned to France several times, exploring different regions and different cities, trying many and I do mean many varieties of wine and food. Gathering knowledge and inspiration along the way. Renting apartments rather than staying in hotels trying to immerse themselves in the true French culture. The idea of opening their own restaurant still toying in their minds. In between their travels they started and ran a very successful, private cheffing company in the Phoenix Metro Area. Fuse Dining Concepts has severed thousands of guests since its inception, predominantly French inspired dishes with a fusion of other countries thus the name. When it came to opening this restaurant, it had to be classic, it had to be traditional, and it had to be filled with the warmth, love and high-quality ingredients you find all over France. So what is a Brasserie, Brasseries have a rich history that dates back to 19th-century Paris. Originally, the term “brasserie” referred to a brewery, as these establishments were where beer was both brewed and served. Over time, brasseries evolved to offer simple, hearty meals that perfectly complemented their beverages. Traditionally, brasseries were informal yet refined gathering places where people could enjoy French staples at almost any hour of the day. The atmosphere was usually characterized by white tablecloths, uniformed waiting staff, and a relaxed, welcoming ambience. JAN 2026

After returning home from France in the spring on 2024, James and Tory set out to find the perfect location to open their own version of this French staple. They knew they wanted it to be in a neighborhood filled with diversity and a since of community, they wanted to create a space that would become a local gathering place, where friendly faces welcomed people back with familiarity and comfort was found not only in the food served but in the space as well. The Melrose neighborhood was the ideal location for their concept, with its vibrant day and nightlife and eclectic group of people. After searching for nearly a year, they received a call from their real estate agent that there was a restaurant just listed for sale in Melrose, they booked a time to see it that same day. The former Belly Restaurant, situated on the corner of 7th Avenue and Camelback had been a favorite eatery for the aspiring restaurateurs, and when they arrived to take a look at the once popular and thriving space they knew instantly that it was the perfect location. Originally built in the 1950s, the building has charming yet subtle nods to its roots, from the exposed brick facade and original sign poll, it stands as the gateway to the Melrose district. Distinct in nature, with a second story dinning room and patio with views of Camelback Mountain it would become the perfect collaboration of Mid Century Arizona and modern European design. After months of negotiations, on September 15th the couple finally received the keys to unlock their dream. With keys in hand, the fun began. They hired a contractor to begin the build out, opening the patio to the dinning room was a major priority. The redesign had to complement the existing style and structure of the buildings mid-century modern design with charming warm European accents. Creating a space welcoming and comfortable by day and sexy and chic at night. This blend was wonderfully achieved and when you first enter the space you know you’re somewhere special. Design elements aside, when you step foot in the door, the smell of fresh baked pastries, and breads takes your mind on a journey to France. Creating an in-house pastry and bakery program was essential to their concept, providing high-quality handcrafted, pastries, locally sourced and roasted coffee to their morning and midday customers was going to give a truly new experience for this building. Tory enlisted the help and expertise of his brother Kyle, who, for the past several years has been working as a French pastry chef and recently moved back to Phoenix after being the head pastry chef at a Five Star resort in Park city, Utah. Together the brother duo built a beautiful and delicious in house pastry menu. They have the classics of course the butter croissant and the famous French baguette but then seasonal and weekly changing flavors to both their sweet and savory options. Having these rotating flavors and classic options has in a short time since opening created a rather large and very consistent fan base. Now that breakfast has been served lunch and dinner of course must come. As stated previously, the food to be offered at Brasserie Melrose had to be authentically French, hearty and warm and made from the finest ingredients available. Tory has assembled a team of chefs, prep cooks and other essential workers to bring the menu to life. On the menu you will find classic dishes such as Stake Frits with a Cafe De Paris sauce, Duck Confit, Beef Bourguignon and Ratatouille. Seafood towers with fresh oysters, piled high with jumbo shrimps and lobster salad. Now you can’t have delicious French cuisine without a well curated wine list and delicious craft cocktails. The wine menu boasts 21 French varieties, and the bar is made up primarily of French imported liquors. The doors are open, the lights are dimmed and the tables are set. f you have ever needed to feel small in the best way possible, drive to Edge of the World. Tucked deep in the Coconino National Forest, perched right above the red rock valley of Sedona, this overlook has earned its dramatic name. I go often, and every time it still feels like a reset. It is about a 2.5 hour drive from Phoenix, but when you step out onto that cliff, it feels like you crossed into another version of yourself. The approach alone is its own kind of pilgrimage. You leave pavement behind and travel roughly 20 miles down forest roads, the trees shifting around you as the world opens up. Then suddenly the ground drops away and you are standing at the edge of a rim that looks out over jagged rock formations and colors that seem impossible. It is the kind of view that stops your words before you can speak them.

EXPLORATION

Camping here is primitive. No bathrooms, no water, no hookups. Just you, the wind, the cliffs, and around thirty unofficial campsites that people have carved out over the years. In summer it gets busy, and finding a rim spot can be tough, but when you do, it is worth every bump in the road. Sunset melts across the valley in layers of pink and gold. Sunrise washes the cliffs in pastel light that makes the whole world feel new. Those moments are why I keep coming back.

A Taste of January in the District

In the Melrose District, January is a vibrant rebirth. While the rest of the country shivers, our desert citrus groves explode in neon pinks and deep rubies. This “Sunrise” carpaccio is a celebration of that energy—clean, sophisticated, and perfectly suited for a New Year reset. INGREDIENTS 2 Blood Oranges (for that dramatic ruby blush) 2 Cara Cara Oranges (for a soft sunset pink) 1 Ruby Red Grapefruit (for a bright morning zing) ¼ cup Pomegranate Arils (antioxidant “jewels”)

NUTRITION

Fresh Mint Leaves (for clarity and aroma) Optional: A pinch of Tajín for a playful Phoenix kick, and a drizzle of Agave Nectar for a magazine-ready sheen. INSTRUCTIONS Prep the Citrus: Slice the tops and bottoms off your fruit. Stand them upright and slice down the sides to remove the peel and white pith. Cut into paper-thin, uniform rounds. Arrange with Intention: On a clean white plate, overlap the slices in a circular “sunburst” pattern, alternating colors from the outside in. Garnish: Scatter pomegranate arils and fresh mint leaves artfully across the plate. It’s a high-protein, plant-forward masterpiece designed for the modern Melrose man. INGREDIENTS For the Cauliflower Steaks: 1 Head of Cauliflower (cut into 1-inch thick “steaks”) 2 tbsp Olive Oil 1-2 tsp Turmeric Powder (for that signature glow) Flaky Sea Salt & Black Pepper For the Neon Beet Hummus: 1 cup Cooked Beets (roasted or vacuum-packed to save time) 1 can (15 oz) Chickpeas (rinsed and drained) 3 tbsp Tahini Juice of 1 Lemon 1 clove Garlic 2 tbsp Olive Oil Pinch of Cumin & Salt To Garnish: Fresh Microgreens or Cilantro INSTRUCTIONS 1. Prep & Season the Cauliflower Slice the cauliflower into thick steaks. In a small bowl, whisk 2 tbsp olive oil and turmeric. Brush both sides of each steak until they are coated in a vibrant, golden yellow. Season with salt and pepper. 3. Roast Place on a parchment-lined tray and roast at 400°F (200°C) for 20–25 minutes, flipping halfway through, until edges are tender and slightly charred. 4. Plate with Panache Spread a generous, artistic “pool” of the pink beet hummus onto a matte plate. Carefully place the golden cauliflower steak atop the hummus. 5.
