Christmas Amalgamated opens its doors Nov. 14

Christmas Amalgamated will open its doors for the 2022 holiday season at 10 a.m. on Nov. 14 at a location yet to be disclosed.

Christmas Amalgamated acts as a clearing house for service groups and individuals that provide hampers to people who need them. The centralised service prevents families from receiving more than one hamper from different service groups and helps ensure those in need are not left out. The organisation was created 40 years ago, and today almost all the service groups in Kamloops participate, according to Sally Whitson, ChristmasAmalgamated co-ordinator.

Christmas Amalgamated relies on donations for the hampers and a gift for each registered child.

“This year could be a real rough year; donations aren’t what they usually are,” Whitson said. “We’re seeing a lot more low income people registering over the past few years – some for the first time – and this year looks like it will be the same.”

As usual, Christmas Amalgamated is in need of gifts for teen boys and babies - not just for newborns but developmental toys for the little ones - toddlers and preschoolers.

As for the teens, Christmas Amalgamated receives lots for girls because they’re cute and frilly, but the boys seem to be left out., according to Whitson.

When it comes to donations of foodstuffs, Whitson is asking people to “think Christmas.” That means giving people the means to prepare a Christmas dinner.

“So we’re looking for food that people would traditionally serve their families for Christmas dinner,”Whitson related.

To register your family, you must do so in person (you cannot register someone else’s family for them and you cannot register online). You must bring proof of income (paystub or form from welfare) and proof of address, and identification for everyone in the household.

Once approved, the parent can then “shop” in the toy room, choosing one toy for their child, which they can take home and wrap themselves.

The week before Christmas, arrangements are made for a food hamper to be delivered right to the family’s door.

The first year the organisation delivered 100 hampers; last year, Christmas Amalgamated distributed almost 2,500 hampers to the area’s needy families.

Oncealocationisreveled,ChristmasAmalgamatedhourswillbefrom 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. for registration, and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. for donations.

For information regarding registering for a hamper, making a donation, adopting a family, or volunteering, call 250-376-0777.

The following food items can be included in a basic food hamper, alldonationsofwhicharewelcomedintheformofadonationatthe ChristmasAmalgamated depot where they are sorted and compiled into baskets for each family.

All home-baked and canned food items must be prepared in an Food-Safe approved kitchen. There are no refrigerators or freezers in the building, as such, all donations should be non-perishable. If you are adopting a family, ensure there is enough food to feed the entire family for their Christmas dinner. (Extras can be included.)

The Chris Rose Therapy Centre for Autism Society (CRTCA) launches its largest raffle in its history on Nov. 10: a Vacation Lottery where one person in just 999 tickets has the chance to win a $7,000 travel voucher to be used towards any dream vacation, whether it’s Disneyland or a Cruise, a trip to Paris or theAmazon.

Tickets are $100 and can be purchased at either the CRTCA at 1111 TranquilleRd.,atKamloopsKIAat880EighthSt.,orbycallingthecentre at 250-376-6494. Details are online at https://chrisrosecentre.org/kia/

The Chris Rose Therapy Centre for Autism Foundation joined forces with Kamloops KIAearlier this year to support the Centre’s fundraising and outreach efforts. In addition to a financial contribution, Kamloops KIAhas provided professional guidance, resources, and other support.

“This will be the Centre’s largest fundraiser in its history,” explained Executive Director Wanda Eddy. “As one of only three specialized centres for autism in the country, a significant part of what we do as a not for profit is to make sure we have enough funding to provide the best education and support for our children and their families.”

ThedifferenceCRTCAmakescanbebestexplainedbydescribinghow a child can learn to communicate, understand, and interact in the world.

“Wehelpstudentscommunicate.Thisincludestheirwantsandneeds, explained Eddy. “We help children learn to adapt outside of their normal surroundings or enjoy celebrations with their family. Some children could never go swimming, eat at a restaurant, or participate in Christmas before coming to our centre.”

Tim Shoults, Treasurer of the Chris Rose Therapy Centre forAutism Foundation, knows the Chris Rose Centre very well.

“My wife Laura and I moved our family to Kamloops specifically for the Chris Rose Centre. Our son David received the best therapy and education for his needs. He has grown into a kind, caring young man that we are proud of, related Shoults. “The centre made this possible with its incredible services and its talented and dedicated staff. Kamloops is incredibly blessed to have this place here and we need to work to support it.”

David now attends the Life Skills program at Thompson Rivers University.

Proceeds from the Chris Rose Vacation Lottery will support the Society to provide therapies and therapists.

The prize for the $7,000 travel voucher will be drawn Jan. 13, 2023, at Kamloops KIA.
