10th Anniversary Special Edition

From the Ambassador Congratulations to the Jamaica JET Alumni Association (JJETAA) on the achievements you made during the last year. On behalf of the Government and people of Japan, I wish you all JJETAA members and supporters a successful 2013.

knowledge with fellow Jamaicans. What pleases me is that JJETAA members are enthusiastic about promoting cultural exchange between the two countries even after several years have passed since their return home.

I arrived in Jamaica on November 5, 2012 as the 7th Ambassador of Japan to Jamaica. For the past few months since my arrival, I have had extensive discussions with many Jamaican people including Ministers, business leaders and government officials. Every day, I am learning about Jamaica and thinking about how Japan and Jamaica can strengthen their relationship to become indispensable partners.

In particular, the Embassy is impressed with JJETAA’s commitment to the education of Jamaican youths. The poster competition which JJETAA organized last November was my first involvement in JJETAA’s activities as Ambassador of Japan to Jamaica. I participated in the Award Ceremony of the poster competition in which some Jamaican students proudly received prizes for their original posters. I am grateful that JJETAA is providing Jamaican youths with the opportunities to learn about Japan in the manner that children are encouraged to make the connection between Japan and Jamaica.

The JET Programme is one of the schemes which our Embassy will continue to promote. Since the JET Programme started in Jamaica in 2000, it has become the flagship of cultural exchange between Japan and Jamaica. As the number of applicants has increased significantly, the selection process has become extremely rigorous and competitive. This year, we received over 400 applications from among which, about 20 Jamaicans will get a chance to take up the role as a JET. Currently, approximately 70 Jamaican JETs are teaching at schools throughout Japan. I am informed that Jamaican JETs are doing well in adjusting to Japanese work and living environments and helping Japanese students to learn English.

Ambassador Yasuo Takase

The JET Programme has a great impact on its participants who experience a new life in Japan. I believe, however, that the JET Programme has become so successful because of its ability to positively impact not only the participants, but many more people both in Japan and the home countries of JETs. In Japan, not only students and teachers but also whole communities learn from JETs about their cultures and languages. Likewise, in their home countries, the families of JETs also learn about Japan through their eyes. Last year marked the tenth anniversary of the Jamaica JET Alumni Association. Since its inception in 2002, the JJETAA has played a key role in increasing the awareness of Japanese culture among Jamaican people by sharing their experience and

JJETAA is definitely one of our indispensable partners in achieving our goal of enhancing mutual understanding and cooperative relationships between Japan and Jamaica. The Embassy promises to continue to provide any necessary support to further promote JJETAA’s activities and expand its network. Once more, I extend my sincerest gratitude for your commitment, hard work and support for the Embassy.

Why join JJETAA?  To share the Japanese culture and way of life with the Jamaican people.  To assist the Embassy of Japan to promote the JET Programme.  To reminisce and share stories with persons who have had similar experiences.
