Ambassador Mr. Masaya Fujiwara Embassy of Japan in Jamaica

I would like to congratulate you all on the 20th Anniversary of the JET Programme in Jamaica. I commend you all for your years of hard work and dedication in helping promote relations between Japan and Jamaica. I am impressed by the impact that the Programme has made in Jamaica.

In my conversations with my Jamaican counterparts and Jamaican political leaders such as the Prime Minister the Most Honourable Andrew Holness, there is always mention made to it.

The Programme has proven to be a major instrument in promoting mutual understanding at the grassroots level in the JapanJamaica partnership. Indeed, it is one of the most successful exchange programmes that the Government of Japan has had the honour of administering over the years.

Since the year 2000, over 400 Jamaicans have participated in the Programme as ALTs (Assistant Language Teachers). A few of my foreign counterparts who have participated in the Programme shared with me the invaluable experiences that it has given them not only in furthering their careers, but also the opportunities it has brought them to act as representatives for their countries and the life-long friendships they have made with Japanese people. I assume many of you, JETAA Jamaica members, have also had similar experiences during your time in Japan.

This past year has been a complicated one for everyone regardless of location. But, it has demonstrated the importance of coming together as a global community and strengthening our connections with each other, and deepening our understanding of different cultures.

I would like to sincerely congratulate you all again for your continued contribution to the success of the JET Programme and for the 20th Anniversary of the Programme in Jamaica.

I will continue to wholeheartedly support this Programme and wish for its continued success in strengthening the connection between our countries.

The 2020-2021 financial year was quite a year! It was filled with challenges, victories, joys and sorrows. I am grateful that the Japan Exchange and Teaching Programme Alumni Association of Jamaica (JETAA Jamaica) Family all made it safely through the year and simultaneously my heart goes out to those of you who have lost loved ones.

The COVID-19 pandemic represented the most severe threat to human health in more than a century. The effects of this pandemic were positive and negative. The restrictions imposed by Government worldwide resulted in serious economic challenges but at the same time, we have the benefit of a cleaner global environment.

As it relates to the Association, we had an awesome year in spite of the challenges.

While we were not able to meet face-toface and host our usual events, such as our Picnic by the Poui and end of year party, thanks to technology, specifically the Zoom platform, we stayed connected. We continued to have our monthly meetings, and organized and hosted a number of exciting events. I am happy that we were able to expand our reach as participants in our events included those who would not have been able to attend if they had been held face-to-face. And in the coming year, I look forward to engaging with more of you in the virtual space.

Over the twenty-year period, nearly 400 Jamaicans, including current participants, have been involved in the JET Programme. Under the theme "Celebrating 20 in 2020", the 70 persons who attended the celebratory event enjoyed a potpourri of congratulatory messages, a photo slideshow reflecting Jamaican JETs in Japan over the past two decades, personal reflections from current and past JETs, and musical tributes.

Virtual Reception in Celebration of the Birthday of His Majesty the Emperor of Japan

The 2020-2021 financial year, marked my 10th year as a member of the JETAA Jamaica Executive Committee and my 2nd year as President. It has been an exciting and rewarding experience that enriched my life in many ways. I have grown as a leader and team member and I have formed strong friendships with members of the Association and other persons with whom I have had the pleasure to interact on behalf of the Association. I was continuously inspired by the passion and commitment of the JETAA Jamaica membership.

I acknowledge and express my gratitude to the small, but dedicated team of persons, who, notwithstanding the personal and professional challenges they have faced, prior to and during the COVID-19 pandemic, have willingly given of their time and expertise to ensure the sustainability of the Association for the past 18 years. Your dedication and sacrifice were a great source of inspiration and strength for me over the years.

I would also like to express my gratitude to the Council of Local Authorities for International Relations (CLAIR) for their guidance and support for our activities and the Embassy of Japan in Jamaica for the superb job they have been doing in administering the programme. Also, I was heartened by the unwavering support from our Affiliate members and those persons, whom we have described as "Friend of Japan".

The year culminated with the Annual General Meeting, which was held virtually on 20 March 2020.

In addition to electing a new Executive Committee for 2021-2022 (see page 23), a number of changes were made to the Association's By-laws including: inclusion of the Association's organizational structure; imposition of a two-year term limit in any one position on the Executive Committee; and expansion of the acceptable modalities for meetings to include virtually (teleconference or the Internet) or use of a hybrid approach (combination of face-to-face and virtually).

As I hand over the baton to the new President and the other members of the Executive Committee, I look forward to continuing my service to the Association. I also look forward to seeing two dreams come true: an increase in the number of active members and the establishment of at least one subchapter in another part of the island.

I close with a quote from Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director General, "Be safe, be smart, be kind".

Celebrating 20 in 2020 A smorgasbord of poignant reminiscences, congratulatory messages, heartfelt tributes and inspiring music captured the essence and spirit of a robust 20-year relationship between the JET Programme and Jamaica. Such was the engaging event which captured the hearts of the 69 attendees at a virtual celebration of the JET Programme in Jamaica organized and hosted by the JETAA Jamaica on November 20, 2020. “Celebrating 20 in 2020” was the fitting theme chosen by the Alumni Association to commemorate a two decade long relationship characterized by rich intercultural exchanges, longlasting friendships, and strong collaborative ties between Jamaica and Japan.

2020 was an unusual year by any standards. The pandemic triggered by the rapid global spread of the COVID-19 virus effectively rendered a large gathering to celebrate this momentous occasion impossible. It seemed a celebration of the JET Programme’s twenty year tenure in Jamaica would go the way of the many other activities planned by JETAA Jamaica for 2020. But as the summer drew to a close, the Association’s waning, doubtful spirits were buoyed by the enthusiastic insistence of the Ambassador of Jamaica to Japan, Her Excellency Shorna-Kay Richards, that this important milestone should not go unmarked. Her enthusiasm proved contagious, and so, rallying their

spirits, a committee comprising members of JETAA Jamaica and spearheaded by President, Marsha Dennie, embarked on the challenging task of planning the event with strong support from the Embassy of Japan in Jamaica.

Celebrating 20 in 2020 went not only virtual, but global as well, and a full entertaining and engaging programme enjoyed the participation of Ambassador Richards, H. E. Masaya Fujiwara, Ambassador of Japan to Jamaica; Mr. Hiroaki Isobe, Executive Consultant of the Council of Local Government for International Relations (CLAIR); and Ms. Grace McLean, Acting Permanent Secretary in Jamaica’s Ministry of Education, Youth and Information (MoEYI), who all brought congratulatory greetings hailing the success of the Programme over the years.

This success was recognized as being due in no small measure to the excellent cadre of Jamaicans who have represented their country on the Programme since its inception.

Former Jamaican JETs residing in and outside of Jamaica, current Jamaican JETs across Japan and the many friends, affiliates and supporters of the Alumni Association also joined in the celebrations, bonding virtually and enthusiastically over the reflections of current and former JETs spanning the two decades. along with powerful and moving vocal contributions from Alumni still residing in their adopted homeland of Japan added an extra sentimental touch to the evening’s programme. The recurring theme throughout the event was the profound and farreaching impact which the JET Programme has had on the individual lives of the JET participants, as well as on the broader communities with which they have interfaced over the years.

This was underscored by Mr. Shawn Aarons, Keynote Speaker, who was among the dubbed “Pioneer Group of Eight” who first ventured out on the programme in 2000. It was under Shawn’s leadership that a fledgling Alumni Association was launched in the early 2000s upon his return to Jamaica.

JETAA Jamaica is elated at the longevity of the JET Programme thus far in Jamaica and looks forward to ongoing collaboration with CLAIR and with the Embassy of Japan in Jamaica to ensure the Programme’s continued success.

Stock Market 101 the benefits of investing; and the performance of and opportunities provided by the Jamaica Stock Exchange (JSE).

JETAA Jamaica hosted a knowledge transfer session under the theme Stock Market 101: Investing to Grow your Wealth on 2 October 2020 via the Zoom platform and attendees came away with a wealth of information on the stock market.

The presenter, Romario Sterling, a Research Analyst from a local investment banking firm, shared information on: the types of stocks that exist; why stocks were issued by companies; how the stock market works;

Our interest was piqued when we learnt that 91 companies from various business sectors were listed on the JSE and that the JSE had provided an average annual return of 47.3% over the period 2015 to 2019. It was underscored that decline in the market due to the COVID-19 pandemic provided an opportunity to acquire stocks of companies that were poised for growth beyond the pandemic.

Armed with requirements on how to start investing and with additional information that was obtained from the question and answer section, attendees left the event feeling smarter about investing in the stock market.

Jamaica's Ambassador-Designate to Japan and JETAA Jamaica Commit to Enhanced Relationship

Shorna-Kay Richards Ambassador, Embassy of Jamaica Tokyo, Japan

Jamaica's Ambassador-Designate to Japan, Ms. Shorna-Kay Richards, in preparing for her new assignment, met with President Marsha Dennie and other representatives of JETAA Jamaica on August 12, 2020 as part of a round of Courtesy Calls she was undertaking before she departed for Japan in September 2020.

The virtual meeting afforded AmbassadorDesignate Richards the opportunity to outline some of her plans for a "whole of country" approach to her upcoming mission in Japan, in which she envisioned forging a much stronger relationship with Jamaicans on the JET Programme in Japan.

Acknowledging that Jamaican JETs formed a powerful cadre of persons already serving as unofficial "Cultural Ambassadors" across Japan, she indicated her desire to engage the Jamaicans in a much more expansive role to support a message of "One Jamaica in Japan, raising the level of the relationship".

This expanded role that she envisaged would span various dimensions of the economic and socio-cultural realms of Jamaica.

Ambassador-Designate Richards' shared that the Embassy of Japan would be to be very proactive in reaching out and engaging the JETs in what she termed a "seamless, very accessible relationship".

This vision was welcomed by the JETAA Jamaica representatives who expressed their confidence that current Jamaican JETs as well as JET Alumni still resident in Japan would welcome the increased engagement with the Embassy, and the opportunity to play a more visible role in promoting Jamaica in their respective communities across Japan. The Alumni also welcomed Ambassador-Designate Richards’ intention to provide content to the JETs so that the messaging they imparted in their various corners of Japan was similar and standardized, which would help them to present the very best of Jamaica. She explained that the content would be value-added to reflect and create a diversified knowledge of Jamaican culture beyond the Reggae music for which Jamaica was already renowned among the Japanese populace.

Ms. Dennie, in expressing her enthusiasm at the Ambassador-Designate’s plans, said: "we are very excited about your vision, and happy that the Embassy is taking this thrust". The Alumni Association was particularly heartened by Ambassador-Designate Richards’ assurance that the Association should consider the Embassy as an honorary Alumni member on the ground in Japan, helping to receive, guide and support the JETs during their stay there. On that note, the two sides committed to setting up a structured dialogue to facilitate their joint support to the Jamaican JETs who head to Japan each year, as well as to explore other ways in which they could collaborate in their mutual objective of fostering the long-standing relations between Jamaica and Japan.

Navigating and Surviving COVID-19

As the world continues to navigate the COVID-19 pandemic, we have all been forced to adapt to a new way of life, a so-called “new normal.” However, while we find ways and means to cope and pivot as it were, we are reminded that these changes have come at great human and social cost. Not only do we collectively mourn the way things used to be, we must now learn to function in a world that has been left socially divided with a gaping emotional deficit.

In recognition of this new socially distant reality, the Japan Exchange and Teaching Programme Alumni Association (JETAA) Jamaica continued to empower and uplift its membership and other willing participants through personal and professional development Zoom knowledge transfer sessions. In its online session held on February 20, 2021 titled "Self-Care and Mental Wellness",, Presenter and Facilitator, Ms. Tereka Brown, shared tips and coping strategies to help navigate the current turbulent waters.

The overwhelming positive feedback at and after the session was a testament to its effectiveness.

The small gathering of attendees of twelve persons provided an intimate setting and opportunity for individuals to lay bare their feelings and support each other. The focus on self-care and mental wellness was lauded as pragmatic and useful. From the onset, participants were invited to carry out an individual personality assessment to build selfawareness. Tereka underscored the point of not using a “one size fits all approach.” In other words, she pointed out that identifying your own character traits and triggers, allows you to engage in better

self-management. Borrowing from the words of Aristotle, "knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom," participants delighted in Tereka's impassioned presentation on Discovering What Works For You as key concepts and tools resonated with the audience. As the session progressed, "Working" from "Home" tips were shared as many struggled with issues of productivity since the home space and office space have now converged. Tips included creating a designated or separate space for work; establishing boundaries by letting family members know that you are not be disturbed while at work; getting boundaries by letting family members know that you are not be disturbed while at work; getting ready and dressed for work as you would for the office as this would encourage a more professional mindset; and maintaining work bond by keeping in touch with colleagues and maintaining social connections outside of the home. As the session was wrapping up, participants were treated to a video of the The 10 Commandments for Less Stress.

The session lasted for over an hour and the attendees could not get enough of Tereka and her gems and practical approach to self-care and mental wellness.

She kept the audience engaged with activities and open discussions that not only highlighted her penchant for teaching and training, but also her love for people and their well-being.

As the session came to a close, perspectives on self-awareness came full circle as the initial activity was tied into a final fun scenario in which attendees had to predict their responses based on their character traits.

All in all, everyone was left with a feeling of contentment as they were able to indulge in an enjoyable time of self-care. And, as a bonus, they got a chance to connect with friends and colleagues, affirming that no one is an island, no one stands alone.

About Tereka Brown - Tereka served as Treasurer of JETAA Jamaica from 2019-2021. She was an Assistant Language Teacher in Matsuyama in Ehime Prefecture from 2011-2018. Tereka is a seasoned educator who pursued undergraduate studies in Linguistics and Psychology. Tereka teaches a critical reading and writing course at the University of the West Indies, Mona, where she is also pursuing a Master's degree in Education Policy and Management.

Reflection: An Enriching Experience When I arrived in Japan in July 2002, I was nervous and apprehensive about my new life.

Being a person with dark skin, I was worried that I would have trouble fitting in. Those concerns however quickly dissipated upon meeting my new colleagues, the students and members of the local community. Over the three years as an Assistant Language Teacher in Japan I felt loved, appreciated and at home.

As I reflect on the three years, a few of the unforgettable memories flood my mind: dressing up as Santa Claus and handing out Christmas presents to delighted kids; cooking Jamaican food with an appreciative group of locals; singing

and dancing Bob Marley’s song “Three Little Birds” with some of my students in the school festival; harvesting sweet potatoes with a group of elementary school kids; climbing a mountain for the first time (Mt. Daisen); wearing a kimono; travelling all over Japan; and participating in many Japanese cultural events.

Through my expeience in Japan, I gained valuable skillls that enriched my life - I became more confident, selfassured, tolerant, open-minded and culturally aware. I met some wonderful people who are still a part of my life today.

Since returning home in 2005, I have been proudly demonstrating my passion for Japan and my commitment to strengthening the ties betweeb Japan and Jamaica through my involvement in JETAA Jamaica. Would I do it again if i could turn back the hands of time? Oh yes, a resounding YES!

Marsha Dennie was an Assistant Language Teacher (ALT) at a senior high school in Sakaiminato City in Tottori Prefecture from 2002 to 2005. During her sojourn, she enjoyed exploring Japan - Fukuoka, Kyoto, Hiroshima, Osaka, Okayama, Tokyo (and many more places) - and being an unofficial cultural ambassador for Jamaica.

Marsha is currently the Corporate Planner at a government agency in Jamaica.

Reflections in Poetry

Nadine Karen Thompson Kagoshima (2016-2011)

Nadine was an Assistant Language Teacher (ALT) at a high school in Amami Oshima, a small island in the Kagoshima Prefecture. She also visited junior high schools and elementary schools once a month.

During her 5-year sojourn, she enjoyed exploring Japan - from Fukuoka, Kyoto, Hiroshima, Tokyo to Hokkaido (and many more places) - and immersing herself in the Japanese culture. Nadine has lived in several other countries, including her current home, China, however Japan and the JET Programme still hold a special place in my heart. Nadine states: "I always get a feeling of 'natsukushii' when I talk about Japan. It was truly memorable experience." Nadine is the author of a poetry compilation titled: "Encounters" (see page 21). Below are two poems written by Nadine on her JET Programme experience.

The streets massively busy, fast walking, running to catch a train. The hotel breakfast: rice, fish and miso soup. Nihongo sounds chattering and clambering all around. Another train, another flight, a designated pickup car, we arrived at home. Meeting new colleagues, a collective bow. The apartment, tatami floors, futons and square bath in a bathroom. The first day of school eager students, questioning eyes, sensei attached to my name. Diving in! Everyday a new experience. People full of kindness and genuine care. A new home filled with leisure bound up with “genki desu ka, ki o tsukete, oskaresama deshita” flowing into “nomihoudai, tabehoudai and karaoke.”

Accomplishing everyday tasks in new dimensions.

Appreciating summer festivals, fireworks and graduation tears. Forming a true acceptance.

An ALT role, Eigo, cool, brilliant, fun Culture immersion.

At lunch time, on the street, always a call of sensei.

Reflection: Inspired by My Students

Sheril Morgan Tottori (2003-2006)

Sheril was an Assistant Language Teacher (ALT) at a senior high school in Yonago City, where she taught nearly all forms at different levels. The experience was insightful and assisted her in becoming more adaptable and culturally aware. Sheril currently resides in Canada and works as an Academic Advisor at a university. In her downtime, she likes to read and go on nature walks. Sheril has held several positions on JETAA Jamaica's Executive, namely, President from 2013 to 2015, Vice President from 2011 to 2013 and Secretary from 2007 to 2011. Sheril is the author of a book titled: "Journey East: Stories and Life Lessons from My Time in Japan" (see page 22).

Below, Sheril reflects on her JET Programme experience.

I have many beautiful memories from my time in Japan, but one of the most notable is that of my students. I was posted at one senior high school, Higashi High, during my tenure, which gave me the opportunity to connect with students on a greater level than if I were assigned to a number of different schools. During my three years at Higashi, I came to enjoy teaching and interacting with students in and outside of the classroom. I even found that some of my greatest connections happened outside of class or at English club, where students felt less inhibited to express themselves. I often muse that my students were one of the chief reasons for me staying in Japan for the time that I did.

However, it did take some effort to get to the place where I enjoyed teaching and was able to develop greater connections with students. I remembered when I first land in Yonago; I was eager, excited and ready to dive into my first set of lessons that I had meticulously prepared. The initial response of my students however, was not as enthusiastic. I found

they were rather reserved and focused quietly on me during the lesson. It took a few classes for students to begin warming up to me. I was also challenged to create more interactive lessons that would garner greater participation.

I got to see another side of my students during the annual school festivals through their creative displays and costumes on show for the occasion. I also saw their skill and dedication at practice sessions for various art forms and sports like kendo, judo and volleyball throughout the semesters.

I have a passion for education, which has been greatly influenced by my time at Higashi High. My students back then were some of the earlier influences that helped me to hone my craft of teaching. My students today continue to challenge me to grow and remain at the fore of this inspiring field.

Janet Crick Miyazaki (2002-2004)

Janet is CEO of Jamaica Culinary Tours, a food tourism business which she co-founded in 2013. She is from Kingston, Jamaica and after serving for two (2) years as an ALT in Nobeoka City, Miyazaki-ken she continued her previous career in foreign trade and foreign policy for a number of years in Jamaica and in Guyana. Upon returning home from Guyana, she opened her own business in culinary tourism. Her career has also expanded in recent years to include training in cross cultural competency and awareness. In addition to her native tongue of English, she speaks Spanish, French and a smattering of Japanese! She has been an active member of JETAA Jamaica since its foundation, serving as President from 2006-2007.

Although I had visited several countries before embarking on the JET Programme, and had even lived overseas in two different countries, nothing quite prepared me for my sojourn in Japan.

Of course, I made every effort to prepare myself for this new chapter in my life. I was well versed in intercultural experiences, having spent the last few years heading an intercultural exchange programme in Jamaica, so I drew heavily on those teachings and lessons learnt as I prepared for my departure. I also drew on the experiences of my two previous periods of working and living overseas; and last, but not least, I studied the handbook for new JETs thoroughly. It was in the early days of Jamaica’s participation in the Programme, and we did not yet have the benefit of a thorough pre-departure orientation programme for outgoing JETs, so the handbook became my best friend in the weeks leading up to my departure as I readied myself.

Nevertheless, as prepped as I thought I was, none of the above strategies could truly prepare me for that full immersion into Japanese culture and the Japanese way of life. In the early days, there were times when I felt I was thrown headfirst into the deep sea and I had two choices – sink or swim. Clearly the first was not a desirable option, so I had to learn (fast!) how to swim, or at the very least, how to tread water so as not to sink!

It was not that my new environment was hostile – far from it. It was in fact - despite the shyness and hesitant curiosity of some residents in my small town - quite welcoming. But I was faced with a number of challenges and cultural differences that I had to

come to terms with and learn to navigate, sooner rather than later, in order to make my experience in this country so very far away from my homeland, and from anywhere else I had ever been, a positive and enjoyable one.

First off, I had never been in a situation where I could not communicate. There were a limited number of persons in my area who could speak English, even at the Board of Education where I was based, and in the many schools I taught in each week, so devising and becoming adept at all types of communicable sign language until I started to learn Japanese was critical.

A second challenge was that I was coming from a culture which tends to be very vocal and assertive and where persons are generally quite forthright in expressing what is on their mind or in making a request. It was therefore quite an adjustment learning to operate in a culture where assertiveness and confrontation were not deemed appropriate, and where you couldn’t just insist upon an issue until you got the desired ‘yes’. With time, I came to understand that one’s approach needed to be much more subtle, much less direct, and very importantly, I would learn that even if you never got an outright “No”, you might never actually get that coveted “Yes” either!

A third cultural nuance that often challenged me was living in a culture where there was a systematic, fixed and routine way of doing almost everything from which one did not deviate. Very little flexibility is allowed for in the Japanese way of life, and families and society in general are wired to inculcate individuals with the relevant traditions, norms and way of doing things from an early age. Since most people don’t want to be labelled as that offensive “nail that sticks out”, they largely conform. The extreme homogeneity can be jarring for the Westerner who is accustomed to a much higher degree of spontaneity, flexibility and spur of the moment innovativeness.

Nevertheless, with time I came to appreciate the certainty of a fixed routine and established procedures. It meant that I could depend on things to be where they were supposed to be, people to do what they were supposed to do when they were supposed to do it, events and activities to start on time, and procedures and rules (as maddening as they sometimes were!) to be followed. It lessened the opportunity for unpleasant surprises, foul ups, and frustrations and gave me a heightened appreciation for order and the preservation of traditions.

Interspersed with my challenges were the joyful moments of discovering the hidden gems of a new culture – new experiences to immerse myself in, new foods to try, new places to discover and explore, a plethora of new friends to share with and learn from, and new hobbies and interests to pursue. I immersed myself in all of the above, not allowing my spirit to become overwhelmed with the challenges and

At the end of my tenure, I boarded the plane for Jamaica with mixed feelings – longing to see home and to bask in the familiarity of it again, but knowing that I would miss the beauty, intricacies and richness of the Japanese culture, its people and way of life. My chapter in Japan had ended, but my experiences and their impact would stay with me. Today, all these years later, as I take stock of my approach to life and its challenges, my hobbies and interests, my friendships and even my career choices, I can see the unmistakable influence of Japan carefully woven like a delicate thread through the post-JET fabric of my life.

Because of JET, I have gained a deeper appreciation for other cultures and the importance of preserving same and passing it down from one generation to the next. Similarly, I have gained a heightened sense of awareness and appreciation for my own culture, and have developed a passion for preserving that culture and sharing it with others - all of which eventually led to me developing my own business and launching a new career in culinary tourism. cont'd on page 14

Because of JET I learnt to adapt to the the many nuances and forms of communication. I learnt that though ideal, the knowledge of a common language does not have to be the sole basis for communicating and connecting with others. I have also come to understand that there are different styles of communicating, and to appreciate the importance of non-verbal cues and of not just what is said, but also what is not said. I learnt to be sensitive to different situations and to adapt my own learned style of communication where necessary.

Because of JET, I came to understand myself better – to recognize and appreciate my own fortitude and ability to cope with challenges, to overcome them

and to develop great problem-solving skills. I learnt that there would be difficult, sometimes miserable days, but that with the right mindset, I could forge through and counter them by deliberately seeking out joy-filled days packed with exhilarating experiences and encounters and impactful moments.

And finally, but perhaps most importantly, it is because of JET that I boast many life long friendships, a plethora of memorable and treasured experiences and enjoy a boldness, self-confidence and a tenacity of character that accompany me to this day.

Introducing Kaoru Kajigayama Kaoru Kajigayama, Cultural Officer at the Embassy of Japan, arrived in Jamaica in July 2020, in the heights of the COVID-19 pandemic. Though the restrictions of COVID-19 have not permitted the usual face to face encounters where we would have given her our traditional rousing Jamaican welcome, it is is our pleasure to extend a warm welcome to Kajigayama san in this space, and to introduce her to our readers.

The following interview gives us a little insight into Kajigayama san’s career and interests, her experiences in Jamaica so far and what helps keep her sane during a pandemic!

1. Which prefecture are you from?

I am from Saitama Prefecture.

To cope I practice the activities that I love and enjoy the positive experiences that living here has brought me.

2. Where were you working and/or living before coming to Jamaica?

I was researching film culture at Kobe University.

While pursuing my studies I also received a scholarship to study in Mexico City for a year. I am also a member of Ship for World Youth, which is an exchange program for young national leaders from many countries to study and discuss common global issues and participate in many activities on board the Ship for several months.

7. How do you spend your free time?

I practice yoga, go walking, play tennis, watch movies and...take naps.

3. What do you like most about living in Jamaica?

The abundant nature, birds, fruits, colours and people around me who I met here.

4. Tell us about any fun or interesting places that you have visited in Jamaica that you like and describe why you like that place.

I enjoy practicing yoga and I have visited the yoga institution in Portland, which is situated along the beautiful beach, several times. There I have had the opportunity to eat and enjoy the fresh and natural foods and drinks. Here it is easier for me to meet and connect with people. That is why I like it.

5. What are your favourite Jamaican foods?

Ackee and salt fish and festival. (Its taste reminds me of my school days in Japan!)

6. What challenges have you experienced adjusting to life in Jamaica and how have you been managing/coping?

I was shocked by the way some motorists drive and the prices of food at the supermarket. Though I have international experience living in other countries, I still experienced culture shock living here in Jamaica.

8. Tell us about one thing that you have been doing to cope with the changes caused by the COVID-19 pandemic?

Time for self-care is significant in order to maintain my health physically and mentally. To take advantage of this opportunity, I have been keeping up my exercise routine by watching YouTube fitness channels, meditating frequently and studying English and Spanish further. I have started studying Arabic too! Of course these all depend on me eating well and sleeping well.

9. What is your favorite day of the week? Why? Friday, particularly Friday nights., This is my first night of the week for drinking wine!

We’re thrilled to see that Kajigayama-san has been enjoying our island and connecting with many of the beautiful things it has to offer in spite of the restrictions of the global pandemic. We wish her a fruitful and enjoyable stay in Jamaica, and the Alumni Association looks forward to a continued collaborative relationship with her as we work together to promote the further strengthening of the cultural ties and bonds of friendship between Jamaica and Japan.

JETAA Jamaica Family News Hot off the Press!

The creative juices of some members of the JETAA Jamaica Family were flowing during 2020-2021 - there were two publications and another was on the cusp of being published.

"My Own Big Woman", which is written by Janette B. Fuller (JETAA Jamaica Vice President), was published in August 2020. Janette, who is a teacher, lives in Jamaica. Here is a little blurb to whet your appetite!

"After being abandoned by her lover of twenty-five years, Prudence returns to Jamaica from Canada where she'd spent close to four decades. Ill and infirm, she waits for death, but her feisty sister, Constance, who'd moved in with her, nurses her back to health.

Having recovered from her illness, Prudence looks forward to enjoying a hassle-free retirement. However, Constance starts to treat her like an intruder, taking over her house and her life. Since she doesn't have anywhere else to go, she decides to stay out of Constance's way and make the best of her situation, but Constance doesn't make it easy.

After a few years of Prudence being back in Jamaica, Constance falls ill. What causes Constance's illness and how does she fare now that Prudence is in charge?"

Let's congratulate Karen Bailey-Coleman, Past Secretary of JETAA Jamaica, on her attainment of a Master's Degree in Special Education (with Distinction) from the Graduate School of Education at The Mico University College.

The degree was conferred in February 2021 retroactive to September 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The period of study was September 2018 to September 2020. Karen was one of two graduates who presented a reflection on the learning experience at the Virtual Award Ceremony on 22 July 2021.

JETAA International

The Japan Exchange and Teaching Programme Alumni Association of Jamaica (JETAA Jamaica) was established in 2002. The batch of eight Jamaicans had left Jamaica for Japan in July 2000.

The (JETAA Jamaica) is part of an international network, JET Alumni Association International (JETAA-I). JETAA-I supports and promotes the activities and growth of JET alumni associations globally, by facilitating the exchange of ideas and information and helping them build networks and connections to each other.

The mission of JETAA Jamaica is to assist in enhancing relations between Jamaica and Japan, promote Japanese culture within Jamaica, and serve as a support group for former, current and prospective Jamaican JET participants.

JETAA Jamaica has a 5-member Executive Committee and a general membership made up of Alumni and Affiliate Members.

JETAA-I has a team of Executive Officers, Board of Advisors and the Webmaster. In addition, there is an Executive Committee comprised of the elected Country Representative from the countries that participate in the JET Programme that have member chapters. JETAA-I has over 50 chapters located in 17 countries and over 70,000 members.
