THISRIVEROF CONFRONTATIONS
standing in front of the river of confrontations i stand faced with a distorted reflection of my own
in this reflection lays a question thats began to reach out toward me
“Why don’t I recognize the me from yesterday?”
As the waves brush over my feet
I feel a knot gather in my throat and tears well up in my eyes, threatening to spill over
an offering to this river
standing here, i feel defeat but also come face to face with a revelation that brings me to my knees a saying i've once heard comes to mind
“No man ever steps in the same river twice.”
with newfound relief, i breathe out all i thought I once was and a new wave washes over my hands and feet
All is in flux
This river is ever changing as am I
This river comes back to itself each day, different times reinvigorates it’s body of water
As i sink my head and emerge in this river
I learn that I do the same

Each garment in Shay’s collection tells a story of its own, reflecting the craftsmanship and style of past eras. From vintage Christian Dior pumps of the 1990's to the expressive flair of Robert Cavalli, her carefully curated selection offers a glimpse into the rich tapestry of fashion history.

Living in NYC I honestly get inspiration from everyone I see whether that be proportion wise , color combinations, etc. Right now I’ve been really feeling all black or earth tones paired with some jewelry , specifically my spiral ring which is a symbol I’m trying to incorporate more in my looks :)

GENRE BENDING ADVENTUROUS NOSTALGIC

Girlhood by Thaïs Elie
Girlhood can mean many things depending on the individual. Girlhood has two sides; public and private. In public, Girlhood is a sense of community; being a true girl’s girl. A true girl’s girl is an individual that celebrates other women, is a reliable friend, and counted on for honesty and support. A pact, coven, sisterhood, where the women do not cater to a patriarchal system, and always have each other’s backs. Some do not always have the luxury of finding a good community, and spend years sifting through the chaos in society. Not every girl is a girl’s girl...
In private, Girlhood is a whimsical loneliness. Always protected from the unknown as a child to later learn the dangers that pursue as a teen. Personally growing up as a cisgender woman, I remember constantly battling my fortitude and strength to the other boys versus my urge of femininity, and wanting to be a princess. It was in my solitude, and time passing, that I learned it isn’t one or the other. The two can come together into a personalized balance. Even as little girls the necessity of having to ‘prove’ ourselves to boys is applied both in Girlhood and Adulthood.
Girlhood is a constant fight against female stereotypes. A good current example is female rage! Being a girl doesn’t mean our anger isn’t as violent, loud, or rageful as men. Women in general are not fragile. It’s only that we’ve learned that there is a time and place for everything. To show our emotions in public would allow the media to turn us into something emotional, out of control, sensitive; in a negative light. As if being emotional and sensitive is bad. In fact, I think it’s due to people’s incapability to be empathetic and sympathetic that pushes them to berate the women who are.
Although Girlhood can feel very nostalgic, many aspects are carried into our Adulthood What do you associate with Girlhood? What has your Girlhood taught you? The hope is that it’s taught people to be kind, strong, resilient, honest, and supportive..

You are the kidest thing that ever happened to me even if that is not how our tale is told.
When everyone else told me I was destined to be a forgotten nymph that nutured flowers and turn meadows gold you saw that ichor that resides in me demanded its own throne. You showed me.

BEYOND GENDER NORMS
EXPLORING GENDER FLUIDITY AND FASHION IN THE GEN-Z ERA

Gender is often used to categorize fashion, but in a world where the line of gender is blurring by the day, what does that mean for consumers? Living in New York and attending the Fashion Institute, I see tons of eclectic fashion as a means to express oneself
The trends buzzing in Gen-Z are overwhelmingly genderless. Guys are wearing skirts over pants, gals are wearing sports jerseys and vice versa. The movement towards gender fluid fashion is about creating an inclusive society as much as it is about breaking down barriers through stylistic choices. .

Removing the bounds of gender has created space for more creativity in exploring new silhouettes and fabrics leading to robust fashion choices
The values of Gen-Z towards sustainability, social justice, and equality have heavily influenced our generation's buying habits. Second-hand fashion, like thrift stores, consignment shops, and online platforms like Depop and Poshmark, in my eyes, have played a big role in genderless fashion.

Retailers like Zara and H&M, who historically have reigned king over the late teen to early 30s demographic, organize their stores by the binary while thrift stores are a lot more forgiving.
The internet brought fashion from the world's stage to the palm of your hand. Fashion has progressed rapidly as the decision on what to wear isn’t made by retailers anymore Individuals have access to previously exclusive archives through Instagram Legendary runway shows are plastered on YouTube

Not to mention, editorials are stacked on Pinterest. The access to fashion has created niche fashion scenes as a way to find community. Those who appreciate the designer’s contribution to the fashion landscape nod to one another no matter their gender
What does a truly androgynous world look like though? Does this imply a drab and colorless world that's depicted in sci-fi? What about sizing? What about shape? All valid questions worth discussing, but variety is what makes the world go round We assign attributes to the objects we interact with that coincide with our societal values.
High heels, handbags, and the color pink were all associated with masculinity worn by warriors and aristocrats.

BEYOND GENDER NORMS
Fast forward to today, we have made a full 180 on the way we perceive these items The Barbie movie was marketed to women as a pink girl power movie Heels are required for women to get into clubs And Jacob Elordi is the only straight man still wearing handbags.
As Gen-Z, I am hopeful our generation will continue to push the envelope to change our societal norms. Our openness allows for creativity to lead the way. The world will most likely never be completely androgynous or uniform, but that’s what makes it beautiful. The balance between masculinity and femininity The black cat and the golden retriever Yin and Yang You cannot have one without the other, but you don’t have to be either or you have both within Clothing doesn’t have gender; we assign one to it

MEET OUR FAIRY MEET OUR FAIRY MEET OUR FAIRY

HEY BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE! I'M ZENZELE, BUT FEEL FREE TO CALL ME ZEN.WHILE I'VE DABBLED IN THE ART OF HAIR FOR A COUPLE OF YEARS, I'M STEPPING INTO THE NEW YEAR WITH THE HOPE OF BEING YOUR PERMANENT STYLIST. IN MY LAIR (AKA MY WORKSPACE), I'M ALL ABOUT PRECISION AND EXECUTION, TOP-NOTCH CUSTOMER SERVICE, AND CREATING AN ENVIRONMENT THAT'S AS PRISTINE AS YOUR NEW LOOK. FEEL FREE TO EXPLORE MY BOOKING SITE AND LET'S MAKE SOME MAGIC HAPPEN. CAN'T WAIT TO MEET YOU ALL AND EMBARK ON THIS JOURNEY TOGETHER!

Q: WHAT PURSUED YOU INTO BECOMING A HAIRSTYLIST?
A: I STARTED DOING MY OWN HAIR WHEN I TURNED 12 SINCE MY SISTERS AND MOM GOT TIRED OF DOING IT, OVER THE YEARS I GOT BETTER AND BETTER. I STARTED TO FALL IN LOVE WITH HOW MY HAIR FELT IN MY HANDS AND HOW NEAT MY EXECUTION WAS, I WOULD SWITCH MY OWN STYLE EVERY WEEK. I WOULD DO MY SISTERS AND CLOSE FRIENDS HAIR AND PEOPLE STARTED TO ASK ME WHEN I'M GONNA START ACCEPTING CLIENTS SINCE I WAS GETTING PRETTY GOOD. SO I STARTED TO TAKE IT SERIOUSLY IN 2020 AND I MADE MY FIRST HAIR PAGE. I WAS DOING HAIR OUT MY PARENT HOUSE BACK IN FLORIDA BUT IN 2021 I HAD TO MOVE TO BALTIMORE FOR SCHOOL CONTINUING TO BLOSSOM IN A ENTIREILY DIFFERENT STATE.

Q: WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS ONE OF THE HARDSHIPS YOU FACE?
I THINK ONE OF MY HARDSHIPS WAS BEING A BIO MAJOR WHO WAS A LITTLE MORE SERIOUS ABOUT HER WORK, I WAS SCARED TO PUT TIME TOWARDS BRAIDING THAT COULD OTHERWISE GO TO STUDYING. SO I
TOOK A BREAK MY FIRST SEMESTER AND STARTED BACK UP SECOND SEMESTER ANOTHER CHALLENGE BECAME BUILDING MY NEW CLIENTELE AND TRYING TO KEEP UP WITH THE "CONTENT CREATOR" STYLIST. COMING FROM FLORIDA TO BALTIMORE IS A HUGE JUMP AND I KNEW NO ONE SO I'D GET A COUPLE CLIENTS HERE AND THERE BUT IT WASN'T CONSISTENT. I'M ALSO SELF TAUGHT SO ALL I KNOW IS BRAID THE HAIR, NOT TAKE A MILLION PICTURES, BUY EXPENSIVE LIGHTS, AND MAKE TIKTOKS. SO I TOOK A YEAR OR SO OFF TO KINDA RE BRAND AND RECENTER MYSELF. AND NOW I'M BACK WITH MY REBRAND I'M TRYING TO KEEP THAT GOING AND WE'LL SEE WHAT HAPPENS
