Every Rose Has Its Thorn

I realise that as a Christian, I am called to do one of 'Christ-like' works, i.e.to love one another as He had first loved me. My work as a psychiatrist does not negate that mandate. I am to carry that action into my work with my patients.

Here I would like to tell you about my testimony.

I met this young woman one day (might I mention she was of a different faith). She was just doing her usual job, just like any other day, you know, being the wife of a chronic alcoholic (sarcasm intended). Now, she underwent what someone would term, the worst nightmare ever; problem being that the nightmare was her reality. She has been abused and physically tormented, needless to say about the psychological stress that she went through. She described to me what life was like in the “hell” that she was living in. She is a mother of 2 and had to do her duties as a mother (more like a single mother). She said that she had to pull through these difficulties for the sake of her 2 innocent children. Added to this was her traumatic childhood, where family considered her as a burden and she narrated how her parents married her off to a much older man (roughly the age of her father) and who was also not the ideal man any woman would want to marry. Similar was the fate of all her sisters. But for how long would she be able to hold on? (She stayed strong for 12 years.) After constant turmoil amidst her families, her husband decided one day to over-do it on alcohol. He had come home under intoxication and demanded her to take him to the hospital. But what happens when you pull an already tense rubber band past the threshold, that’s right she broke out. She refused to tend to her husband. Finally the husband grabbed a bottle of pills and consumed them and was knocked out for 3 days straight and brought to the hospital where I saw him.

Long story short the husband expired due to certain circumstances. That’s when I was able to step in. She told me about all her struggles and difficulties that she faced and I felt her pain (as is my job) and I asked her if she believed in God and she told me yes but I asked her how much? Then it struck me what I had learned in church a week or so ago. I learned that no matter what happens in life, God is either preparing a way for something good to happen or is making you a stronger person for the fight that you are going through. When God puts you through a tough situation, it is only the toughest of warriors that God chooses to equip to go through it all. At the end of the day we will become victorious, prosperous and we will over-come. I was reminded of a bible verse when I heard all this; “That the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work – 2 Timothy 3: 17.”

I was able to share the word of Christ to her and I believe that wherever she goes she will remember that everything she underwent for the past 12 years was just a test of faith and that is the reason she has become who she is now.

I would like everyone to remember that “When God is for us, who can stand against us?”
