I like to view myself as a collector, particularly of “old things.” I love the rich, historical connections and the thrill of the hunt. My husband uses a different six–letter word to describe my habit and thinks my passion for stuff has gotten out of control. Though I think his assessment is a tad harsh, I often reflect on whether I have actually crossed the line between being a collector and a hoarder. It’s difficult for me to think of myself as a hoarder. But truth be told, I come from a long line of females who loved amassing items which they cherished for decades and never gave away. My mom was the queen collector and even wrote me an apology note before she died, knowing the mess she was leaving behind. Am I alone in this obsession or is my interest in vintage things just a sign of age? They say the items we gather as we age often represent both old and new memories, travel and friendships. But the bottom line is the clutter drives my husband crazy and my relationship with him is more meaningful than things. So in the interest of shalom bayit, peace in our home, I have hired two caring organizers who are carefully curating my collection and balancing my love for stuff with my husband’s need for a more orderly garage. The upcoming High Holidays offer the perfect opportunity for us to reflect on our top priorities, to find that balance between that which pleases us and yet negatively affects those with whom we share our lives. May this year bring us health, happiness and peace in our cluttered or clutter-free homes.
