There is an old, Jewish tradition that I deeply revere. It is the Ethical Will. In my mind, the Ethical Will is a love letter to loved ones wherein personal values, beliefs, blessings and advice is shared.

In mine, which is an ongoing work in progress, I share what I have learned, why I am grateful for everything and my hopes for the future.

I also remind my son, Max, of my Jewish journey.

I explain how and when my priorities shifted and why he “should not sweat the small stuff ”.

FROM THE DESK OF ESTHER COHEN My name is Esther Cohen. I am so honored and excited to be the new Chai Care Director. I bring to you many years of experience and knowledge of South Florida’s medical and healthcare communities, gained through more than 30 years of hospice, medical and pharmaceutical marketing experience. I am looking forward to being able to educate the Broward community about the proven benefits that Chai Care, a concierge care management program offered to our Legacy Society donors, offers.

As the daughter of Holocaust survivors, I live each day by my family’s motto; “tikkun olam”, Hebrew for “healing the world”.

My goal and passion is to help, educate and advocate for people faced with the challenges of aging through professional care management. I look forward to becoming your advocate, by assuring that you receive

quality medical care, evaluating your needs, and educating you on your healthcare options.

As we come together during this upcoming holiday season of Thanksgiving and Hanukkah, it is imperative to understand the need for the Chai Care program, so we can ensure that seniors in our community are well taken care of and never feel alone.

Everyone here in the Jewish community of Broward County needs someone, an advocate to be there for them. Allow me and our Chai Care professionals to be your advocate and your family.

In the past, the Social Security Administration mailed an annual report to workers about their Social Security benefits. Your Social Security Statement is important because it is a projection of the monthly payment amount one may expect at retirement. It projects benefits at full retirement age, early benefits at age 62, and delayed benefits at age 70. The Statement shows a history of the amount of income taxed for Social Security and Medicare. It also shows the benefits one would receive if disabled, as well as the benefits their family might be eligible to receive.

Mailing Your Social Security Statements was an expensive process.

Since most people have access to the internet, Your Social Security Statement is now available by creating a “my Account” on the SSA. gov website. For everyone over the age of 60, the Social Security Administration will continue to mail Statements, but everyone else will need to go to the SSA website.

In May, MassMutual Financial Group released the results of a recent study that polled workers age 50 to 59 to see how much they knew about their Social Security benefits. One surprising result from the study revealed that 86% of those polled have never taken the time to create a Social Security my Account. As a result, many people, who should be actively planning for retirement, do not have access to accurate information about their benefits. This includes whether their earnings history is properly credited or not.

Your Social Security payment over a lifetime is a significant asset.

To illustrate, consider Tom and Mary’s situation. Each spouse has a monthly Social Security payment of $2500. If benefits continue through age 85, (including cost of living increases) they would receive more than $1,000,000 in cumulative benefits.

Our traditional folklore tells us that the Maccabees defeated the Greeks after a drawn-out guerilla style war – but not before the Greeks sacked the Temple Mount, defiling and destroying the holy FRIDAY space. On a lighter note, a funny moment with Rose

Morris, an 82 year old man, went to the doctor to get a physical.

A few days later, the doctor saw Morris walking down the street with a gorgeous young woman on his arm. A couple of days later, the doctor spoke to Morris and said, “ You’re really doing great, aren’t you?”

Morris replied, “Just doing what you said, Doc: “Get a hot mamma and be cheerful.”

The doctor said, “I didn’t say that. I said, you’ve got a heart murmur; be careful.”

CHANUKAH GREEK OLIVE OIL CRINKLE COOKIES

BY CHANIE APFELBAUM Creator of Millennial Kosher and Busy in Brooklyn food blog • 2 cups flour • 1 cup dutch process cocoa powder • 2 tsp baking powder • 1/2 tsp salt • 2/3 cup Colavita 100% Greek olive oil • 2 cups sugar • 2 eggs • 2 tsp vanilla • 2 tsp instant coffee dissolved in 1/4 cup water • Wilton gold color mist food spray chocolate Chanukah gelt coins METHOD: In a bowl, whisk the flour, cocoa, baking powder, and salt. In a separate bowl, combine the olive oil, sugar, eggs, vanilla, and coffee. Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and stir well to combine. If any lumps remain, stir the mixture with a hand-mixer until all the ingredients are well incorporated. Place the dough in the refrigerator for a few hours or overnight.

Roll 1 heaping tablespoon of batter into a ball and place on a parchmentlined baking sheet. Make sure to roll the batter quickly (otherwise the heat of your hands will make it sticky). Repeat with remaining batter.

Spray the cookies with gold spray paint and bake at 350 degrees for approximately 12 minutes. Set aside to cool.

While the cookies are still a little warm (but not too hot that they will melt the chocolate), press chocolate coins into the center of each cookie.

VARIATION: Spray the cookies with silver color mist and top with milk chocolate coins. If you prefer not to use color mist, you can roll the cookies in turbinado or powdered sugar instead.

NOTE: If you do not have Colavita 100% Greek olive oil, you may substitute with any other olive oil.
