The recent study, “The Silver Tsunami: Is Broward Ready?”, written by the Community Foundation of Broward, the United Way and the Jewish Federation of Broward County, points out incredible statistics such as: adults over the age of 65 will outnumber children by the year 2030 or that Florida has the highest concentration of adults in the United States. It also evaluates the effects of isolation. Once we stop working, children have left the nest, we lose a loved one and/or lose mobility, we can also lose our connection to others i.e. our social network. As with most things in life, we should plan for these inevitable life experiences.

One great role model is my 95-year-old, Holocaust survivor mother-in-law. It’s quite difficult for her to get around these days; she no longer has

her eyesight and she no longer attends her synagogue. However, decades ago she created an “open door policy” and the community still comes willingly to her. Every Saturday without fail, anywhere between 3-14 women show up to sit at her table for coffee and cake. It’s not a formally arranged group. It’s friends in the neighborhood that have decided to keep and stay in touch. Not everyone is so fortunate. And not everyone wants to entertain every week!

BUT, we will have to strategize as to how we will stay connected to our friends and community.

We may stay in our homes or move into active communities. Whatever we decide to do, we should have a social network and not just on Facebook.

Your actions over your years of involvement shaped and impacted the lives of countless people. While we understand we may not be the only organization in which you invest your time and resources, we are grateful to be a part of your immense generosity. As I was putting this article together, I began thinking of how we express our gratitude for your generosity. We, as the professionals often receive the “thank you” from an agency for lending a hand, or directly from a recipient who has been awarded a scholarship. Since you may not always have the opportunity to hear or meet

the recipients of your generosity, I want to share with you my story.

April 1992, I was awarded a scholarship to participate in the Broward County March of the Living (MOTL). Our family’s financial situation would not allow for me to participate in an experiential learning program, like MOTL. My father didn’t want to reach out for help, he always taught us that charity was for those in dire need and it was not to be wasted on a trip for me. My aunt whoShacket understood Esther the importance of MOTL encouraged my father until the forms were filled out, the essay written and interview completed.

When I was selected, I remember feeling

that my essay and interview were the reasons I was chosen, but many years later I realized it wasn’t either, it was the endless generosity of donors. Donors who were committed to ensuring every Jewish teen had the opportunity to participate in MOTL. Upon arriving in Poland, I couldn’t believe all I was seeing, feeling and saying. I tried day after day, to listen, pay attention and retain all the information we were receiving. I went to Auschwitz to bear witness. I marched in silence, arm in arm with friends, internalizing the memory of all those who were brutally murdered. With each step I felt a sense of gratitude for my simple life and humility.

CHAI LIGHTING Barbara and David Rubin Barbara and David Rubin have been passionate donors to the Jewish Federation of Broward County and its Jewish Community Foundation for over 20 years. They never imagined that their involvement and commitment to supporting the Federation and Foundation would in turn support them when they needed it most.

Foundation professionals, noticing David’s rapid decline, offered their help as part of Chai Care. David and Barbara begin utilizing the program

Barbara and David were married young and lived their life in New York. David had a very successful career working as the Advertising Manager for Vogue Magazine. In their 50s, the couple relocated to South Florida, where David soon retired at the young age of 56 due to various health issues.

Unfortunately, David’s health issues led to him relocating to a caring facility that would be able to provide him with the care and support he required. Very quickly Barbara had to take over the role of caretaker and home manager, a position which she always relied on her husband.

She rapidly jumped into action, selling their home and relocated to an independent living facility that would allow her to be near David.

At the time, Barbara and David were not aware of the Chai Care program,

in 2017 and very quickly realized the immense help and sense of support it provided them with. Chai Care has given them a new sense of comfort, acting as another set of eyes and ears, which helps them navigate the healthcare system, ensuring that David receives the best care and also assists Barbara with her new lifestyle.

Jewish Community Foundation’s Chai Care professionals quickly became their friend, family, advocate and confidante. Today, all of their medical needs, doctors’ appointments and regular check-ins ensure that both David and Barbara are receiving

the best care and quality of life.

Barbara says, “I believe that becoming Legacy Society members was mutually beneficial for us and the Jewish Community Foundation. Not only is our money going to important causes and helping David and I create our legacy, but we are truly benefiting from this very special and important program. We are immensely grateful to the Chai Care program and its dedicated professionals.”

Throughout their life, Barbara and David have been passionate about their philanthropic giving, especially when it comes to giving Jewishly and to Israel. They have specified in their estate plans that upon their death they will donate to over 20, primarily Jewish, causes including the Jewish Community Foundation. While the benefit of Chai Care was not the goal of Barbara and David’s philanthropic giving, they are forever grateful for what the program has and continues to provide them.

Each time I recited Kaddish, I thought of how I could be a difference-maker in my Jewish community.

The time had come to make our way to Israel. This was going to be my first time in the Jewish homeland and I had no idea what I was in for. From the moment I stepped off the plane, my life was changed forever.

Throughout every moment of my MOTL journey I thought; I can’t believe that people believe in me enough to provide me with this incredible experience.

I arrived back home knowing I would forever be in debt to this community.

I enthusiastically fulfilled every responsibility I had from MOTL, speaking at community gatherings, sharing my experiences with family and friends and lighting a memorial candle each year on Yom Ha’Shoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day).

This program, led me to the person I am today and to my passion for working within the Jewish community. I came to this Federation six years ago, and it has been an honor to have grown and serve you, our visionaries for the future, our leaders and most of all our ambassadors of Jewish community building.

Through my 25+ years of working with the Jewish community, I have had the chance to give back and help others in moments of need. Together, we are shaping the future and creating impact upon our teens, young adults and everyone involved.

Early Detection the Key to Melanoma Survival According to research provided by Nova Southeastern University’s Office of Research and Technology Transfer, melanoma affects more than 76,000 people and causes approximately 10,000 deaths in the United States each year.

According to statistics provided by the National Cancer Institute, there are currently more than 900,000 people living with melanoma in the United Sates. Additionally, the American Cancer Society estimates that melanoma affected more than 87,000 people in 2017.

If detected and treated at an early stage, melanoma cases are mostly curable. When treated before metastasis, the 5-year survival rate is an excellent 98 percent. However, in cases that remain untreated until metastasis, the 5-year survival rate is only 10-15 percent.

Although there are multiple approved therapies for melanoma, the disease is known to acquire resistance to most of them. A number or currently used melanoma treatments also result in toxicity for healthy cells. Moreover, the overall survival period of patients suffering from late-stage metastatic melanoma is only about three years.

As a result, there is a need to develop effective combination therapies that result in higher survival rates and /or offer longer periods of progression-free survival. A nova Southeastern University researcher, in collaboration with two other Florida-based experts, in investigating a treatment that offers an innovative approach for treating melanoma-and potentially other cancersby targeted inhibition of cellular proteins.

Their treatment strategy implements a combination of pharmaceutically acceptable carrier and a therapeutically active compound that specifically interacts with particular cellular proteins. Such targeted therapies are of interest to medical professionals, as the treatments tend to demonstrate better effectiveness against malignant cells and lower probability of serious adverse events.

Finding and effective treatment for melanoma is of paramount importance from both a health and economic standpoint, as the global melanoma treatment is estimated to reach $12.4 billion by 2025.
