The Social Network

People, people who need people. Are the luckiest people, in the world. --Lyrics by Bob Merrill from the song “People”

The recent study, “The Silver Tsunami: Is Broward Ready?”, written by the Community Foundation of Broward, the United Way and the Jewish Federation of Broward County, points out incredible statistics such as: adults over the age of 65 will outnumber children by the year 2030 or that Florida has the highest concentration of adults in the United States. It also evaluates the effects of isolation. Once we stop working, children have left the nest, we lose a loved one and/or lose mobility, we can also lose our connection to others i.e. our social network. As with most things in life, we should plan for these inevitable life experiences. One great role model is my 95-year-old, Holocaust survivor mother-in-law. It’s quite difficult for her to get around these days; she no longer has

her eyesight and she no longer attends her synagogue. However, decades ago she created an “open door policy” and the community still comes willingly to her. Every Saturday without fail, anywhere between 3-14 women show up to sit at her table for coffee and cake. It’s not a formally arranged group. It’s friends in the neighborhood that have decided to keep and stay in touch. Not everyone is so fortunate. And not everyone wants to entertain every week!

BUT, we will have to strategize as to how we will stay connected to our friends and community. We may stay in our homes or move into active communities. Whatever we decide to do, we should have a social network and not just on Facebook. H A
