Maria Shriver has an electronic Sunday newsletter entitled “I’ve Been Thinking” in which she writes about a broad range of topics. I find that I, too, have been thinking quite a bit lately about ageism. Recently, during travel, I have found that the most patient and customer-service oriented stewardesses or support personnel at the airport were actually “retired” from their previous professions and took on these positions to supplement their income.
In other, mostly non-Western societies, the elder is revered. They are the historians, the storytellers, the sages. The beauty of life and its’ cycles is that there is a time for everything. Speaking with someone who has been on earth for a long time brings clarit y and wisdom to the times in which we live. Dos redele dreyt zikh. Loosely translated from Yiddish, the wheel is always turning. We should take advantage of those that have been around during various turns of the wheel.
