Maria Shriver has an electronic Sunday newsletter entitled “I’ve Been Thinking” in which she writes about a broad range of topics.

I find that I, too, have been thinking quite a bit lately about ageism. Recently, during travel, I have found that the most patient and customer-service oriented stewardesses or support personnel at the airport were actually “retired” from their previous professions and took on these positions to supplement their income.

In other, mostly non-Western societies, the elder is revered. They are the historians, the storytellers, the sages. The beauty of life and its’ cycles is that there is a time for everything. Speaking with someone who has been on earth for a long time brings clarit y and wisdom to the times in which we live.

Dos redele dreyt zikh. Loosely translated from Yiddish, the wheel is always turning. We should take advantage of those that have been around during various turns of the wheel.

T

he Jewish Community Foundation of the Jewish Federation of Broward County's new fiscal year officially began on July 1, 2018. I am proud to represent the Foundation in my second year as its Chair.

Joining me on the Foundation Board of Trustees, are an additional 17 amazing and devoted lay leaders. The Board of Trustees works tirelessly to raise, invest, distribute and oversee the day-to-day operations of the Foundation and to utilize effective doers, donors and door openers in our community.

The Jewish Federation of Broward County’s impact on the Jewish Community at large was over $12 million dollars for 20172018, with over $7.9 million being funded through the Jewish Community Foundation.

These dollars went towards supporting the Jewish community in Houston as they rebuilt after Hurricane Harvey, towards an emergency grant to the Soref JCC to repair the roof in the preschool and gym, to

provide scholarships for teen experiences in Israel, to helping seniors live with dignity, to providing opportunities for individuals with special needs, toward bringing a group of 12 teens from Nesher, Israel to experience our community and create impact on every camper at Camp Kadima at the David Posnack JCC and towards so much more.

Our Foundation is a community comprised of today's leaders in philanthropy who through their generous commitment are ensuring the future of our local and global Jewish community. As we enter this new fiscal year I, along with the Board of Trustees, am dedicated to not only increase the dollars we raise, but to increase the impact we make this year and all the years to come.

CHAI LIGHTING Eugene (Gene) Schneck

We had the honor of sitting down with Gene and hearing about his Jewish and philanthropic journey over the last 91 years.

Gene is the true definition of a self-made man. Like so many in our Broward County community, Gene is a transplant from New York. Growing up his parents were not very involved in the Jewish community, but his grandfather’s involvement left a lifelong impression. In his early twenties, he was drafted into the Marine Corps and served a year in China. While serving, he felt that he needed to hide and deny his Jewish identity.

Once back stateside, Gene was looking for social engagement and became involved in the United Jewish Appeal (UJA Federation New York) and B’nai Brith. Through his involvement he met great people and his excitement for being Jewish and giving Jewishly was ignited.

Later in his career, Gene became a parttime snowbird to the Sunshine State and

ran into old friend, Elissa Mogilefsky, who had relocated from New York to East Fort Lauderdale. In New York, they were part of Havaruth, where Gene was the oldest participant and Elissa was the youngest.

During his time in Florida, Elissa and her husband, Len Weiselberg, connected Gene to Temple Bat Yam and his involvement in the Broward Jewish community expanded to our Federation. Elissa, Len and Gene’s friendship blossomed through their shared commitment and excitement for making an impact in the Jewish community. At a young age Gene realized that there was a high you get from doing good and donating to causes in which you believe. This realization further deepened his involvement and impact with the Federation as he went from part-time snowbird to full time Broward County resident.

Gene became a donor to the Federation over 15 years ago because he wanted to make an impact and he believed in the vision and dedication of the Federation leadership and professionals. Over the years he has utilized a number of different ways to give; he has donated to annual campaigns, invested in charitable gift annuities and he has left an endowment to the Jewish Community Foundation. When talking about his philanthropic giving to the Federation and Foundation, Gene expressed that he feels that he has gotten back what he has put in, if not more. One example he explained

was through his charitable gift annuity. He chose to give a gift this way because it was a wonderful tax opportunity, had competitive rates and it guarantees him an income now and whatever money remains when he passes away, he knows will go towards making an impact in our Jewish community.

Another example is through the Chai Care program. When he first became eligible and heard about the program he didn’t believe that it was relevant for him, but today he sings a different tune. He now says that, “the best investment I ever made was to the Jewish Community Foundation. The service they’ve provided me through Chai Care when I was going through medical problems has been unbelievable. They have been with me supporting me 100%. The Chai Care professionals have become my family.”

While sitting down with Gene and hearing his journey, his joy and commitment for giving to the Jewish community shined brightly. His Jewish and philanthropic journey truly sets the example for what it means to “Create a Jewish Legacy”.

An elderly gentleman had serious hearing problems for a number of years.

He went to the doctor and the doctor was able to have him fitted for a set of hearing aids that allowed the gentleman to hear 100%. The elderly gentleman went back in a month to the doctor and the doctor said, “ Your hearing is perfect.

Your family must be really pleased that you can hear again.” The gentleman replied, “Oh, I haven’t told my family yet. I just sit around and listen to the conversations. I’ve changed my will three times!”

HONEY WHISKEY BUNDT CAKE INGREDIENTS Cake: • • • • • •

3 cups cake flour 1 teaspoon baking powder ½ teaspoon baking soda ½ teaspoon salt ½ cup soy milk ½ cup water

¼ cup whiskey 1 cup extra virgin olive oil ½ cup sugar ¼ cup brown sugar ¼ cup honey 4 eggs

Glaze: • 6 tablespoons vegan butter • ½ cup honey

• ¼ cup whiskey • Pinch of salt

Preparation: 1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease a 10 to 15 cup Bundt pan and set aside.

2. In a medium bowl, mix the cake flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Whisk to combine and set aside.

3. In a measuring cup, combine soy milk, water, and whiskey and set aside.

4. In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment add oil, sugar, brown sugar, and honey. Beat on low speed until combined.

With the mixer running on low, add eggs, one at a time, until combined.

Scrape down the sides of the bowl.

5. With the mixer running on low, add ⅓ of the flour mixture, then half the whiskey mixture, another ⅓ of the flour, the rest of the whiskey, and finally the rest of the flour mixture.

6. Pour batter into the prepared pan and bake at 350°F for 40 to 50 minutes, until a toothpick comes out clean and springs back to the touch.

7. Once the cake comes out of the oven, prepare glaze. In a small saucepan, combine vegan butter, honey, whiskey, and salt. Heat until it comes to a boil, and allow to boil, and reduce for 2 to 3 minutes.

8. Once cake has cooled for 10 minutes, use a toothpick or wooden skewer to poke holes all over the cake. Slowly pour half the glaze all over the cake. Allow to cool completely, then turn the cake out onto a cake plate.

Using a pastry brush, brush the rest of the glaze all over the top of the cake.

LIFE 11 REASONS TO CONSIDER

INSURANCE FOR YOUR CHARITABLE GIFT

There are many reasons why life insurance could be considered the Ultimate Endowment Tool, here is some food for thought.

1. A life insurance policy provides a guaranteed death benefit. So, assuming premiums are paid, the charity’s receipt of a given amount is certain. Compare this with a gift of real estate or marketable securities that may be subject to wide fluctuations in value.

2. If the insurance policy is owned by a charity, assuming premiums are paid, the gift can’t be revoked by the donor. So rather than a “maybe someday” gift that might never be made, charity-owned life insurance is a gift they can count on.

3. Substantial leverage is possible. A relatively small amount of premiums can translate into a large and meaningful gift. The leverage ratio of death benefit to premiums paid is extremely favorable, usually many times more than the charity would otherwise receive through a non-life insurance gift.

4. Almost anyone, regardless of economic position, can assure a meaningful and significant gift, a larger gift to charity through life insurance than by other methods.

5. Tax-Free Benefit: life insurance death benefits are tax free assuring the charity gets 100% of the intended gift.

6. Life insurance involves none of the cost, delay, or uncertainty of probate.

7. The policyowner has the right to borrow or use policy cash values as collateral as soon as they develop. If the charity is the owner

of the policy, it can use policy values for any reason whatever at any time.

8. Life insurance can be kept private or can provide publicity to help attract other donors. The size and even the existence of a life insurance gift can be completely confidential because of the contractual nature of life insurance. On the other hand, recognition is possible if publicity is desired.

Anyone can assure a meaningful and significant gift 9. Unlike other installment-type gifts, the gift of life insurance can be “self-completing.”

So, regardless of how few premiums the donor paid prior to death, the amount the donor intended the charity to receive (i.e., the policy’s death benefit) is paid to the charity. Compare this to annual gifts made by a “best intentions” donor who dies after one or two years.

10. The transfer itself is simple and costefficient. Any policy can be used, and there is no cost to an absolute assignment.

11. From the non-profits perspective, there is much less administrative responsibility for an insurance policy than for real estate or other similar assets. Usually, there are no complex or expensive valuation procedures nor is there concern about environmental problems.
