It is an honor to be directing Anna in the Tropics at Miami New Drama, especially during these times in which so many works of literature are being censored. Anna in the Tropics celebrates the power of literature and how it can offer possibilities to transform our lives. We all have a book, a play or a movie that made us not only see life in a new light, but also allowed us to realize that our existence is extraordinary.

All works of art should astonish, not in an ordinary, fashionable way, but with their unsettling beauty and insight into life.

They should all take us on a spellbinding journey that insists in guiding us inwards, towards our humanity, and the depths of the human heart. This is what this play honors, the gift of the written word and how it can make us change the way we view ourselves and the world.

Anna in the Tropics is a story about the transformative power of art and literature. The lives of the characters in the play are turned upside down when they are introduced to the powerful Tolstoy masterpiece Anna Karenina . Similarly, Nilo’s powerful masterpiece has transformed the lives of thousands of theater professionals, students, actors, directors, and countless others. As the first Hispanic playwright ever to win the Pulitzer Prize, Nilo has inspired a generation of Hispanic artists to pursue theater. He opened the door and gave us permission to enter. Miami New Drama is a result of that ripple effect.

I remember exactly where I was when I read Anna in the Tropics for the first time almost 20 years ago. I remember how deeply it impacted me and how Nilo became one of my heroes. Years later, I made my New York directing debut premiering a play by Nilo Cruz. Today, I call him a friend and a collaborator. It’s our great honor to be producing the 20th anniversary of this play with such a brilliant cast and extraordinary design team.

I hope you enjoy the show.
