Coordinator’s Corner Rebecca Richardson, Early Learning Coordinator I want to share how proud we are of our Early Learning Programs in Prior Lake-Savage Area Schools. Our teachers are the best of the best. They are true professionals, certified educators, lifelong learners, and arrive each day ready to support your child through any and all circumstances with loads of love. Our support staff in the building are just as wonderful whether they are snuggling your baby in Sibling Care while you attend ECFE, supporting your preschooler through the curb side drop off, or keeping the facility clean and ready for your children each day. This amazing group of staff have persevered through a consistent reduction in teaching and learning space in a very short time, working hard behind the scenes to keep things running smoothly for your children.

FACT: Just 3 years ago, our ECFE programs had 2 dedicated Parent Education rooms and 4 Children’s classrooms. CURRENT REALITY: This year we have space for only 1 dedicated ECFE classroom. We are unable to open additional sections of popular classes nor can we offer classes at a variety of times to meet all families’ needs. FACT: Only 2 years ago, all Full Day preschool classrooms were offered at Edgewood School in Early Childhood Classrooms. CURRENT REALITY: Full day preschool for 4 year olds has been moved to Elementary Schools, but not necessarily in preschool or kindergarten sized rooms as there is limited space of that size available. We have a sizeable waiting list for our Full Day option, with no place to open new sections. FACT: Only 1 year ago, Edgewood had a full time Early Childhood motor room space, and 2 Occupational Therapy Spaces. CURRENT REALITY: Our Lower level motor room is now also K-3 Kids Company space, and a Kindergarten Phy. Ed. Space. We now have 1 Occupational Therapy Space in which to service students.

· ·

FACT: Last year, all students had access to a computer lab in Edgewood School. CURRENT REALITY: This year, our computer lab has been re-purposed into a 3rd grade classroom.

·

FACT: Teachers do a lot of work outside of the classroom for assessment, peer learning groups, and curriculum planning. CURRENT REALITY: All Preschool and ECFE staff office spaces have been converted into classrooms. Teachers now share closet spaces with up to 3 other teachers for an office space.

·

I share these facts with you, along with our current state of operation, to give you a peek behind the scenes of what our wonderful, hardworking staff have in order to continue to provide the high quality programming our community is accustomed to. We are here to serve you, the families of our community and look forward to sharing our Winter Session of ECFE. All the best, Becca

Investing in our Community On November 7, Prior Lake-Savage Area School (PLSAS) District residents will vote on two school funding requests to address the district’s growing enrollment and maintain educational quality. Question 1: Bond funds to create space for our growing enrollment • New elementary school • Classroom space and renovations to several elementary and both middle schools • High school additions and renovations including classrooms, expanded cafeteria, increased gym spaces for physical education classes, additional parking lot • New Bridges Area Learning Center Question 2: Renew and increase operating levy • Continues existing operating levy that funds current schools and staff • Provides additional operating funds needed to hire staff, equip and operate the new schools and spaces in Q1

What will happen if voters do not approve the requests? Without the additional spaces that Q1 would provide, the district would need to pursue: • Class size increases, K-12 • Elementary school boundary changes, beginning 2018-2019* • School bus transportation changes, beginning 2018-2019 • Review potential school start time changes *Some boundary changes will be needed even if Q1 is approved.

If Q1 is approved but Q2 is not: • The district would not have funds needed to operate, staff, and equip the new schools and spaces that would be built with Q1 funds. • The district would need to hold another election in November 2018 to renew the expiring operating levy or lose $6.5 million per year for educating PLSAS students.

Bonds are for building, levies are for learning. School districts must ask for voter approval when they need additional funds to build, maintain or operate their schools. State funding does not cover building new schools or doing major maintenance and renovation. And nearly all Minnesota school districts rely on additional locally approved funds to operate their schools. We keep growing! PLSAS is a popular and growing school district. • Since 2000, we have averaged more than 225 additional students per year. • Most of our schools are already at or over capacity, and more families keep moving in. Transparent planning process After a failed referendum in 2016 to address our student growth, we went back to the drawing board, rolled up our sleeves and listened to our community. The result? A thoughtful proposal at a reduced cost.

If voters approve both requests, the tax impact on a $300,000 home will be less than $21.50 per month

Voting Information

Polls will be open from 7:00 AM to 8:00 PM on November 7, 2017. Absentee ballots are available. Voting Questions? Call 952.226.001 or visit www.mnvotes.org to find your polling location.
