Connections is a publication of the Kentucky Country Day School Communications Office. KCD firmly supports the principle that the admission of students, the employment of staff, the operations of the program, and the governance of the school be open to all who are qualified, regardless of race, gender, creed, color, or national origin.

From the Alumni Association President Dear Alumni, Parents, and Friends of KCD, Welcome back to school and to our fall issue of Connections, which is full of news about KCD and our many wonderful alumni. If you didn’t attend KCD’s graduation last June, you missed a wonderful speech by KMI alumnus Bernard A. Dahlem ’46. The Alumni Association was so pleased to induct Mr. Dahlem into the Alumni Hall of Fame for his many civic accomplishments as well as his service to the community. A plaque in his honor is now on display in the entrance hall of the Frazier Upper School. Mr. Dahlem made a long-term commitment to independent education by sending his four children—Karen, Blair, Charles, and James—to Kentucky Country Day. His speech to the class of 2007 sent a timeless message of the importance of a life filled with hard work, moral integrity, and service. Mr. Dahlem is the second KMI graduate to be inducted into the Hall of Fame (A. Stevens Miles ’47 was inducted in 2000), and I hope you will read more about his accomplishments on page 26. Graduation was also a special time for me because my daughter Emily graduated with the class of 2007. Her thirteen years at KCD seem to have passed so quickly, but I know that she is well prepared for college life because of the foundation she received at KCD. The quality of the academics and the wonderful faculty here provided her with the skills and confidence to succeed at Furman University. Now that she is on her own and free to make her own decisions, I understand the value of the educational experience—which goes far beyond academics—that KCD provided. As alumni from KMI, KHS, LCD, or KCD, I’m sure we don’t remember much of the course material from high school. What we do remember, however, are the relationships and life lessons we learned from faculty and fellow students. I hope that you will join us for future alumni events as we remember the importance in our lives of our alma mater, teachers, and friends. Some of the upcoming events for alumni include the October 26 Alumni Tailgate at KCD. You won’t want to miss the excellent barbecue provided by Ted Mitzlaff ’86 and the many fans who come out to support KCD football. The event is free for 1970s football players, and if you can still fit into your old jersey, we’ll give you a prize! This is also the 35th anniversary of the first KCD graduating class, so please check the Web site (www.kcd.org) for future events. We will also be planning an anniversary party for Reunion Weekend in June with a dinner and a band after the Golf Outing. In conclusion, I would like to inform you about KCD’s growing internship program, which is led by board member Dr. Shanker Chandiramani. Last year, “Dr. C” interviewed and placed nine KCD students in local, regional, and international internship programs organized by KCD parents and their companies. Our parent and alumni communities are invaluable resources to students, new graduates, and alumni. As this program moves forward, I will be working with “Dr. C” to expand this internship program to include an alumni job placement program called KCD Re/Connect. If you are able to offer summer internships for college students or would like to list permanent job openings for KCD graduates, please contact Director of Alumni Relations Mollie Mulloy. After all, we spend thirteen years educating these wonderful students—wouldn’t it be great to retain that talent in our own community? I hope you will join me in enthusiastic support of Kentucky Country Day School by participating in our alumni events and programs. Maintaining your connection to KCD is important to us!

Sincerely, Jana Clanton Dowds ’80 Alumni Association President

From the Head of School Dear KCD Alumni, Parents, and Friends, The 2007–2008 school year is a special one for the KCD community. We are celebrating our 35th anniversary as Kentucky Country Day School, which was formed through the amalgamation of four predecessor schools: Kentucky Military Institute, Aquinas Preparatory School, Kentucky Home School, and Louisville Country Day. From our first days in 1973 on the Rock Creek campus to now, KCD has drawn the best attributes from this diverse and rich history and upon them has built a strong and thriving school, providing each student with an exceptional start to an extraordinary life. The school is flourishing and continues to grow thoughtfully, enjoying a record enrollment of 902 students this year. Academic achievement continues to be the core of our mission. The class of 2007 enjoyed the region’s highest ACT scores as reported in the CourierJournal, and the class of 2008 is distinguished by 14% of its members being recognized by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation for academic excellence. Our emphasis on great teaching continues with continuing expansion of professional development opportunities for our teachers, 78% of whom hold advanced degrees. All around the school, there are great things happening. To name just a few: Our upper school laptop program continues to be an example other schools are emulating. In the Middle School, our middle school students participated in an NAIS international initiative, Challenge 20/20, by forming actual microbanks in the developing world. In the Lower School, the faculty and students are benefitting from a new reading comprehension program that allows for an 8:1 ratio for the instruction of reading. Our athletic programs continue to grow and achieve further successes. Already this fall, we have nearly 500 student names on rosters participating in athletic competition, excluding the dozens enjoying lower school intramurals! Our boys’ soccer team captured the all “A” state championship this season after having an exemplary season last year as well—and this is but one example! The fields and gyms are abuzz with activity every day after school as our students flock to the many outstanding opportunities offered by Dr. Green and his coaches. Perhaps best of all, the Gardner Gymnasium is now fully air-conditioned for the first time in school history thanks to a very generous donor! In the area of the arts, the new Fine Arts Guild made an immediate impact on the life of the school. Just as the Booster Club has added excitement and support to our athletic programs, the Fine Arts Guild has done the same for our arts offerings. The addition of a state-of-the-art piano lab, purchased by the Guild, has allowed our music teachers to instruct in exciting new ways with equipment rarely seen in schools our size. The quality of the dramatic productions last year was extraordinary, with large crowds and wide student interest. The entire arts program continues to be a major strength of the KCD experience! As we all know, the Kentucky Country Day educational program is built upon the three pillars of excellence, opportunity, and relationships. It is our responsibility to educate our young people to become lifelong learners, thoughtful stewards, and active citizens. Our visiting speakers series has brought many high-profile individuals to the campus to explore current issues and our responsibilities in helping create solutions. Our partnerships with Habitat for Humanity (2005) and Cedar Lake Lodge (2006) have established KCD as a leader in providing service learning oppor-

From the Head of School tunities for young people. This year, we are proud to announce another schoolwide, year-long project: a partnership with the families of a battalion of the 5th Special Forces Group from Fort Campbell. I encourage you to read more about this exciting service learning program on page 28 of this magazine. Our growth, progress, and successes would not be possible without your generous support. Our Annual Enrichment Fund, which provides the margin of excellence at KCD, supported student learning in every department of the school by raising nearly $400,000 last year. Our many volunteers, exhibiting the spirit that is KCD, gave countless hours toward school enhancements. As we begin the 2007– 2008 school year, I ask for your continued support in time, treasure, and talent of our school’s mission:

Kentucky Country Day School challenges its students to achieve their highest level of academic excellence and to grow into honorable men and women of confidence and integrity. We inspire personal growth through a diverse community and participation in arts, athletics, and community service. By doing so, Kentucky Country Day School prepares its students to live successful lives and make meaningful contributions to society. The future is extremely bright for Kentucky Country Day School! Our school has become a true community sharing an unfaltering commitment to educational excellence. It is an honor to lead the school in these exciting days. Sincerely yours,

Bradley E. Lyman Head of School

2006–2007 Annual Report Letter from the Board Chair On behalf of the Board of Trustees, it is my pleasure to report that the 2006–07

school year represented another outstanding period of accomplishment for Kentucky Country Day, even when compared to the high standards and expectations to which we have become accustomed. More specifically:

Academic Achievement

The school has a well-earned reputation for academic excellence, especially when it comes to preparing students for the rigorous requirements of college. Please consider the following: •  Since the introduction of the new version of the SAT, which is longer and more difficult than the previous generation and includes a mandatory writing component, the average test score for KCD’s graduating seniors has exceeded the national average by over 300 points. •  According to the Courier-Journal, the KCD class of 2007 reported the highest average ACT scores in the city for math, reading, and on a composite basis. •  Over the past four years, an average of 79% of graduating seniors who applied to and designated a college or university of first choice, were offered admission to that college or university, while an average of 11% were recognized as National Merit Scholarship Finalists. •  78% of graduating seniors from the class of 2007 received some form of merit-based scholarship. •  Admission to the most selective colleges and universities in the nation continued, with Davidson, Duke, Georgetown, Harvard, Michigan, MIT, Northwestern University, Pennsylvania, Stanford, Vanderbilt, Virginia, and Washington and Lee, among others, extending offers to members of the class of 2007.

Record Enrollment

Enrollment reached a new record for the fourth consecutive year, increasing to 902 students in the fall of 2007 from 885 students at the same time last year. Enrollment has increased by 125 students over the past four years, driven by two very important trends, both of which reflect a high level of satisfaction with and interest in KCD: •  A 39% decline in the rate of attrition to a record low 5.8% of the student population, which is substantially below the national average for independent schools; and •  An increase in the rate of matriculation to a record 80%, which represents an exceptionally high degree of interest from families whose children are offered admission to the school.

Record Participation

At KCD, the exceptional educational experience is built upon the pillars of excellence, opportunity, and relationships. In this regard, the depth and vibrancy of the school can best be seen through the number of students who embrace the opportunity to participate in a variety of extracurricular activities. Please consider the following: •  Twenty-eight clubs are active in the Upper School, while the Middle and Lower Schools have a record number of students actively engaged in chess, math, speech, orchestral, and Young Strings programs, among others;

2006–2007 Annual Report •  The Upper and Middle Schools combined to field 61 athletic teams consisting of 496 girls and 551 boys, many of whom participated in more than one sport; •  Regional championships were celebrated by boys’ soccer, girls’ basketball, boys’ basketball, softball, and baseball, while individual championships were won in swimming, track, tennis, and golf; and •  The Middle School Drama Society has been honored with several national awards, while recent productions of Guys and Dolls, Twelfth Night, and Fiddler on the Roof spawned an ever-growing quantity of young thespians.

Financial Health

The financial health and outlook for the school has never been better. The school continues to run balanced budgets while retaining the capability to invest in new programs and initiatives. More specifically: •  Revenue increased 7.7% during 2006–07 when compared to the prior year, driven by the 5.1% increase in enrollment and the continued strength of philanthropic support from the KCD community of alumni, families, grandparents, corporations, foundations, and friends. •  The sustained growth in enrollment and fund-raising has enabled the school to reinvest close to $3.5 million over the past three years in support of key strategic initiatives, including the following:

»  $1.5 million has been invested in the student and faculty use of computer and

internet technology. The school now has over 500 computers in service; »  $1.0 million has been invested to support the growth and development of athletic programs and the renovation of campus facilities; and »  $1.0 million has been invested to support academic excellence, including the addition of new faculty, the implementation of programs for faculty development, and scholarships to support diversity.

The Future

As we look to the future, you can expect the pace of change and innovation to accelerate. The 2007–08 school year will see the introduction of new electives, including Arab Literature, African Literature and History, and the History of Islam. Pat Mulloy and Stephanie Raia will combine English Literature with a trip to London, while the number of summer internship opportunities will include assignments in Great Britain, the Philippines, and India, among others. The school is vibrant and thriving. Simply witness the full athletic fields, the busy parking lots, the outstanding quality of the faculty, and the accolades the students continue to receive for their success in drama, debate, the sciences, languages, and community service. It is truly an exciting juncture in the history of the school, and we sincerely appreciate your interest and continued support. Regards,

Jeffrey T. Gill Chair Board of Trustees

2006–2007 Annual Report Endowed Funds Endowment funds are assets that provide support to the school in perpetuity. Endowment funds are invested, and a portion of the investment return provides support to the school’s operations. There are two types of endowment funds: donor specified (‘pure’) and board-designated. When a donor specifies a gift as endowment, the endowment is considered pure endowment. The Board of Trustees of the school can decide to designate unrestricted funds as endowment. These funds, known as board-designated endowments, remain in the endowment until the board decides to change the designation.

Donors often give money to the school’s endowment and specify that the income—or some portion of the total return—from the gift be used to support a specific function in the school. Examples of common restrictions are financial aid, faculty development, and plant maintenance. If the donor does not specify a use, a portion of the total return supports the general operations of the school. At the end of the 2006–2007 fiscal year, the value of KCD’s endowment was $10,836,000.

Gifts from Faculty & Staff 128 current faculty and staff contributed to this year’s Annual Enrichment Fund. It is extraordinary that our faculty and staff, who support KCD’s goals professionally, also show generosity of spirit beyond their formal responsibilities by supporting the school’s fund-raising efforts. We thank them for challenging and inspiring the young people of the KCD community. Jean & Paul Amick David S. Morning Announcements Soccer Championship Highlights Alumni Legacies

This fall, the boys’ soccer team won its first state championship in thirty years by capturing the All A State title. Among the soccer parents following the team this season were two fathers who tracked the team’s successes with a special interest. Both Mark Blieden and James Giesel (KCD class of 1978) were members of the 1977 soccer team that earned KCD’s last state soccer title; both men also have sons playing on the current All A state championship team. Mark is the father of Alexander Blieden ’08, and James’ sons are David Giesel ’11 and Austin Giesel ’08. During the All A Tournament, the team fought their way through a pair of tough, nerve-wracking games to emerge victorious. The semifinal game against Danville was scoreless at the end of regulation play, sending the team to a nail-biting shootout, where the boys outscored their opponents 5-4. The final game against Lexington Christian Academy also ended tied, once again bringing the game down to penalty kicks. Goalie Brandon Geer blocked two of LCA’s scoring attempts, allowing the Bearcats to outshoot their opponents 4-3 to claim their first state title in thirty years. According to head coach Arron Davis, this state championship “was the culmination of four years of selfless work on the part of these senior players. These athletes found their passion and dedicated themselves to it.” The All A championship title capped a great season full of memorable moments, including the Bearcats’ first-ever win against rival Ballard. The team’s decisive 4-1 victory was perhaps inspired by a pep talk from legendary former KCD soccer coach Doug Delafield, whose tenure included the 1975 and 1977 state championship teams. The soccer team presented its state championship trophy to the school during an upper school assembly on September 20. At the Homecoming football game a Cont’d on page 26

Bernie Dahlem KMI ’46 is 2007 Hall of Fame inductee

This spring, Bernard Dahlem KMI ’46 became the second KMI alumnus to be inducted into the Kentucky Country Day School Alumni Hall of Fame. (A. Stevens Miles KMI ’47 was inducted in 2000). Mr. Dahlem was honored for a life distinguished by service to his schools, his company, and his community. In addition to serving as a leader in the engineering and construction industries, Mr. Dahlem has been widely involved in civic affairs in Louisville and has served on numerous boards and committees. While a student at KMI, Mr. Dahlem took to heart the lessons he learned about the importance of integrity and honor. As a parent, he taught his children that acting honorably meant doing the right thing even when no one was looking. Inspired

by his father’s example, Mr. Dahlem’s son Jim, while KCD’s Student Council President in 1984, successfully led an initiative to adapt the KMI honor system into KCD’s code of conduct. This initiative resulted in the school’s present honor system. Mr. Dahlem and his wife, the former Debby Blair, have four children: Karen Dahlem, Blair Dahlem Ivins, Charles Dahlem, and James Dahlem. All four Dahlem children are alumni of Kentucky Country Day School.

Class of ’86 establishes Dunbar Scholarship Fund

The class of 1986 has honored the memory of their friend and classmate John Dunbar by establishing the John Dunbar Class of 1986 Scholarship Fund. This endowed fund will provide financial aid for non-tuition expenses such as class trips and extracurricular activities. This fund was established at KCD thanks to the leadership and initiative of ’86 alumni Ted Mitzlaff and Mark Brown. Other alumni making leadership gifts to the fund include Walter Blocker, Steve

Air conditioning is installed in Gardner Gym

Thanks to a generous supporter of the school, those hot days and nights in the Gardner Gymnasium are now a thing of the past! The installation of a new air conditioning system was begun at the start of school and was completed this fall. The addition of this cooling system will be the final step in the renovation of KCD’s larger gym, which over the last few years has seen the installation of a new wood floor, new bleachers, and the addition of athletic banners commemorating KCD’s championship teams. For more details, see the feature story on page 43.

Dexter Mahaffey ’89 leads diversity initiatives at KCD

This fall, Dexter Mahaffey ’89 returned to KCD as coordinator of diversity activities for the school. In this position, one of Dexter’s primary goals is to enhance the diversity of KCD’s curriculum and extracurricular programming. This year, for example, Dexter is teaching a class in African literature and will offer an Arabic literature course later in the year. In addition, he’s leading efforts to focus student attention on world affairs. In the last month, Dexter has led a student assembly addressing the political situation in Myanmar and taken a group of students to hear an internationally known speaker discuss the genocide in Darfur. For Dexter, these activities are an important part of the ideal of citizenship that is at the heart of KCD’s mission. He is also passionate in his belief that increasing the diversity of our programming will provide students with a powerful new way of seeing the world. “It opens up new worlds for students,” he explained. “You can see the excitement in their eyes when they

realize how rich and varied the different cultures of the world are.” Dexter’s work to diversify KCD’s curriculum and programming leads to his other main objective: the recruitment and retention of a more diverse student body. “Learning to interact in a diverse environment is fundamental ideal of citizenship,” he explained. “We live in a diverse country, and in order to be able to live peacefully and constructively we need to be able to interact with people from different cultures, races, and faiths.” Dexter has also been busy building relationships with community groups, and his goal is to make KCD a leader in diversity programming in the region. Some of his long-term goals include developing an annual student of color conference to be hosted at KCD and beginning an international exchange program with Louisville’s sister cities. “Lots of schools talk about diversity,” Dexter said, “but KCD has actually invested money and personnel to make it happen. That shows a serious commitment to the idea and the values it represents. When we talk about diversity at KCD, I want it to be a means to celebrate our dif-

ferences of race, culture, and faith without using those differences to divide us.”

Sypris Solutions hosts alumni interns

Four recent alumni—Erin Beatty ’05, Ross Hatton ’07, Gary Smith ’06, and Will West ’06—spent the summer working with Sypris Solutions, a company that provides technology-based manufacturing and technical services. As interns at Sypris, our alumni found that their responsibilities ranged from analyzing customer demand to consolidating purchasing to creating databases. Erin, Ross, Gary, and Will not only worked at Sypris’ corporate offices in Louisville, but also traveled to plants in Ohio, Florida, and North Carolina. According to Erin, the experience allowed her to participate in real-world corporate problem-solving. “I learned a lot about flexibility when making goals,” she said, “and about resetting those goals as necessary.” Will stated that, “Working at Sypris has been a great experience and has taught me several important lessons for my future business career.”

Morning Announcements KCD project will support soldiers’ families

In each of the last three years, KCD has taken on a project that has involved students schoolwide in a large-scale effort to support various community groups. In past years, this project has focused on Habitat for Humanity (2005) and Cedar Lake Lodge (2006). This year, we are proud to announce a yearlong project in support of the families of soldiers from the 5th Special Forces Group stationed at Fort Campbell. This fall, this project kicked off with a visit by a KCD group to Fort Campbell as well as a visit by Fort Campbell personnel to KCD. On Thursday, September 20, a group of nearly fifty KCD students, teachers, and parents traveled to Fort Campbell to spend Activation Day (an anniversary celebration) with the soldiers. In addition to spending a picnic lunch with members of the battalion and their families, students were able to tour the fort (including a museum of military history) and to explore some of the equipment that will be used by the soldiers. Some students got to try on night vision goggles, learn how to pack a parachute, and even participate in a parachute simulator. Older students also met with battalion members to discuss the cultural and logistical chalTop: Baxter the Bearcat welcomes the Green Berets from the 5th Special Forces Group to KCD’s Bearcat Carnival and Homecoming football game. lenges the battalion will face when it is deployed to Iraq later in the year. The visit made a deep impression on our students. “It was my first time on a military post,” fifth grader Brigitta Hendren said, “and it was amazing! It was fascinating and so sweet to see the families playing together and fathers with their children. The soldiers were very kind.”

Morning Announcements Seventh grader Samantha Kamen declared, “My favorite thing was meeting the people! Everyone was so friendly and had so many exciting stories to share. I learned that it takes a lot of courage to be a soldier, and that the families of the soldiers are strong (and the soldiers are too)!” Senior and committee leader Jordan Reiss reported, “The biggest thing I came away with from this trip was being able to see the bravery and hard work of these Special Forces soldiers. They do so much and are such respectable people. I certainly have a much greater understanding and appreciation for what they do for us. It was an amazing experience.” A week later, several members of the battalion came to visit KCD for Homecoming. In the morning, the Lieutenant Colonel and Command Sergeant Major of the battalion visited upper school classes to discuss the cultural and language training required for their upcoming mission, which will involve working with local Iraqi officials on community development. During the afternoon pep assembly, KCD welcomed two Fort Campbell soldiers and their families as well as leaders of the 5th Special Forces Family Support Group, which provides services to families whose members are deployed overseas. Lower schoolers presented the soldiers with handmade cards and banners, while the football team presented an autographed football. That night, our guests served as honorary captains for the football team in their game against Shawnee. Both these soldiers and their families were clearly touched by the friendship and support offered by the KCD community. In an open letter to KCD, one of the leaders of the 5th Special Forces Family Support Group offered these thoughts on the day: “KCD has displayed to us teamwork, leadership, determination, and most of all friendship. KCD students made me laugh, smile, and grin, which were much needed at this time when all I can think about is my husband gearing up to deploy overseas. Not to mention, my husband was excited to hear about how KCD students are go-

ing to correspond with the soldiers of the battalion. I know that the spouses and children of the battalion will enjoy the feeling of ‘family’ that KCD has displayed to us, considering most of our families are so far away. Thank you so much for your thoughtfulness and making us feel special in so many ways. We are looking forward to an educational and rewarding relationship between the students, soldiers, and our families.” A committee led by senior Jordan Reiss is currently planning other activities, including a letter writing campaign and a holiday gift drive. Other initiatives, such as clothing drives, may support local communities in Iraq.

Our visitors brought their families to the Homecoming pep rally and that afternoon’s Bearcat Carnival.

Alumni AlumniUpdates Updates About the class chair program

Class chairs play an integral part in the life of alumni and development affairs at KCD. They represent a connection between KCD and each graduating class, and their single most important mission is to maintain close, personal ties among classmates. Although KCD will help with reunion plans, each class chair serves as the lead organizers for class reunions. The current class chairs are listed below for each class; those interested in serving should contact Mollie Mulloy ’01 at alumni.kcd.org. There can be more than one class chair per class.

Former Faculty Paul Hagenau, former foreign language teacher, is preparing for his trip to Ireland. He was very appreciative and touched by this gift from former KCD students.

Alumni Updates Jeff Maguire ’03 receives Watson Travel Grant This spring, Jeff Maguire ’03 was one of fifty college seniors awarded a prestigious Thomas J. Watson Fellowship, which funds a year of travel and research abroad. Jeff, who graduated from Reed College in May, is currently living in China (that’s him at right, atop China’s Tai’Shan Mountain). He’ll stay there until November, then transition to South Africa, Lesotho, and Swaziland until February. From there, he’ll head to India for four months, then finish off his trip in Kyiv and Odesa in the Ukraine. Jeff’s travels are part of his research project, in which he’s studying the effectiveness of HIV/AIDS education programs in countries that have rapidly exploding epidemics or that have well established epidemics with failed educational initiatives. For example, in the Indian state of Karnataka, a shrine dedicated to a deity known as the AIDS Mother is being used as an HIV/AIDS education and resource center. This kind of culturally based education program is at the center of Jeff’s research. “I’m studying the relative risk of overlapping high risk groups such as commercial sex workers, intravenous drug users, gay men, and prisoners. My goal is to try and see what resources should be allocated to these educating people in China, India, and Ukraine. “South Africa, Lesotho, and Swaziland are more of an experience to see what happens when things go poorly—to put things in perspective and to color my research in a way that is vital to understanding the HIV/AIDS epidemic.” The Watson Travel Grants are awarded by the Thomas G. Watson Foundation, which this year presented grants to fifty college seniors in the U.S. and abroad. The award carries a $25,000 stipend to be used for a year of independent travel and exploration outside the United States. Jeff graduated from Reed College in May with a B.A. in history and is currently applying for M.D./Ph.D. programs in medical anthropology at Case, Harvard, and U. C. San Francisco.

George Sanderlin ’75 tackles the Modern Pentathlon George Sanderlin was one of more than fifty athletes from fifteen countries competing in the World Masters (over 40) Championships for Modern Pentathlon. The Penthathlon consists of five Olympic events: pistol shooting, epee fencing, swimming, equestrian show jumping, and cross country running—all of which take place in a single day. The world masters championshipswasheld in September of 2006 in Usti Nad Labem, Czech Republic. There, George competed in the Tetrathlon, which consists of everything in the Modern Pentathlon except for the riding event.

As a relative newcomer to the sport, George scored a personal record 3,342 points in the Tetrathlon to rank 16th in the world. He posted personal bests in both the shoot (score of 165) and the 2K run. He knocked twenty-four seconds off of his previous-best 2K time, finishing in 7:44.8. George, who only started the sport two years ago, did not compete in the ride. “Overall, the competition was very strong,” he said. “Most of the Europeans have competed in modern pentathlon since they were eleven or twelve years old. However, after watching the men’s riding competition, I know that I can ride at that level.” Cont’d on page 34, col. 1

Alumni Updates Cont’d from page 31 on planning his class’ 20th reunion with John Davis and is looking for ideas from the class. He can be reached at gbockhorst@hilliard.com. Alumni Events Reunion Weekend: KCD Alumni Golf Outing Heavy rain showers did not stop

our brave alumni from coming out to the Annual Alumni Golf Outing on Friday, June 8, 2007. Nearly sixty alumni waited out the thunderstorms to play the alumni golf scramble at Nevel Meade Golf Course. The golfers enjoyed snacks and refreshments as well as beer donated by BBC. The 1987 team (John Davis, Yandell Wood, Heyward Harrison, and Brian Cook) won the tournament, with the Flowers brothers/Allen/Franklin team coming in a close second!

Alumni Events KHS Class of 1957 50-Year Reunion

The Kentucky Home School class

of 1957 celebrated their 50th Reunion over the weekend of May 11–12, 2007! Beginning on Friday, the ladies gathered at Genie Lowenstein Aberson’s lovely home for a brunch, where they were able to catch up with classmates and old friends. After the brunch, the KHS alumnae made their way over to KCD for a tour of the campus. Assistant Head of School for Development Chris Brice led the ladies on the tour. Those who made it to KCD were presented with a pink rose (the same flower the KHS girls carried for their graduation) and a packet with all their classmates’ bios. On Friday evening, the festivities continued at Harmony Landing Country

Club, where the KHS ladies partied with the Louisville Country Day School and Louisville Collegiate School classes of 1957. All alumni enjoyed a buffet dinner while listening to “their music” of the 1950s! On Saturday, the ladies gathered at Churchill Downs with friends and family to watch the ponies race and have lunch in the newly-renovated Turf Club. The most exciting part of the day was when the classmates watched the race that they sponsored and were able to present the winners with their trophy in the winner’s circle! Special thanks to Genie Lowenstein Aberson for hosting the brunch as well as Lee Altsheler Hancock and Lucy Rietze Dalton for all their planning and hard work!

Bearcat Pride Preserving KCD’s Athletic Legacy

Fourteen state championship teams.

Sixty individual state champions. Kentucky Country Day School has a thirty-year athletic history full of these success stories. Until recently, however, that history had become nearly invisible, tucked away inside scrapbooks and newspaper archives. In addition, KCD’s indoor athletic facilities were beginning to show their age. Built in the early 1980s, the Gardner Gym and surrounding athletic hallways were facing a pressing need for repair and modernization. To address these issues, Head of School Brad Lyman asked Athletic Director Tim Green to develop a plan to modernize Country Day’s indoor facilities while fostering an awareness of KCD’s rich athletic tradition. “Kentucky Country Day has been enjoying athletic success for over three decades,” Mr. Lyman stated, “but there was very little visual evidence of that success.” With the leadership of the KCD Athletic Booster Club, the financial support of several key donors, and the help of Bearcat sports historian Bill Beam Jr. ’76, Dr. Green developed a three-year plan that has resulted in the transformation of KCD’s Gardner Gym and the surrounding hallways. “I didn’t feel that the facilities were up to KCD standards,” Dr. Green stated, “and I wanted to create displays that emphasized team accomplishments as well as individual honors.” As a result, the Gardner Gym and the surrounding hallways have been completely transformed. Over the last three years, the gym has seen the installation of a hardwood floor, new bleachers and scoreboards, and a new heating/air conditioning system. Perhaps the most visible change in the Gardner Gym, however, has been the addition of a series of sideline banners representing state champion and state runners-up teams as well as banners recognizing state, regional, and conference championships for each sport. Board award displays for every varsity sport have also been redesigned with a consistent style. These awards, which include the storied Michael, Tway, Hoenig, and Robertson trophies, are some of KCD’s old-

Bearcat Pride est athletic traditions, with the first athletic board award being displayed in the gym of the Rock Creek campus of Louisville Country Day in 1954. The Gardner Gym also provides a place of honor for the retired jerseys of the athletes inducted into the prestigious Royal Bearcat Society—the highest honor a KCD athlete can achieve. The transformation in the surrounding hallways has been no less dramatic. In addition to a huge collection of forty framed jerseys showcasing different phases of each sport’s history, the completely renovated hallways also provide a home to other key pieces of Bearcat history. Walking along the corridors, you’ll find displays housing a collection of individual state championship medals, the sticks used by KCD’s four All American field hockey players and our four state championship hockey teams, the putter used by George Stigger KMI ’56 during his two state championships, the plaque awarded to state champion golfer Betty Baird ’79 on her induction into the Kentucky High School Athletic Hall of Fame, and the uniform of Olympic athlete Lisa Buese ’80. The highlights of each team’s history are brought to life by seventeen team record boards, and four glass display cases provide a home to press clippings featuring current athletes, recent graduates, and alumni from all of KCD’s predecessor schools. (A detail from one of these displays provides the background picture on the facing page.) Cont’d on page 44

Bearcat Pride

Cont’d from page 43 The athletic displays have proved to be enormously popular with visiting alumni, who are impressed with the care and professionalism with which their legacy has been displayed. The displays are also a source of pride for current students-athletes, who speculate on which team will be the next to have its record added to their team board or have a banner hung in the Gardner Gym. The area has also proven to be a hit with campus visitors. Admissions Director Jeff Holbrook states that the athletic hallways make a big impression of visitors during campus tours. “They’re

very impressed by the displays,” he stated. “It really brings home to them what a strong athletic program we have here.” These displays have brought KCD’s athletic history to life for a new generation of Bearcat athletes. According to Bill Beam Jr. ’76, who has been working diligently to record and preserve Bearcat sports history, “It’s important for our athletes to know that they’re part of a tradition that’s achieved great things. By feeling that they’re part of a great tradition, I hope that they’ll aspire to great achievements of their own.”

The Benjamin G. Robertson Sr. Society

Fall 2007

A Family Decision CD parents Jeff and Tricia Gill included

K provisions in their will making bequests

to KCD upon their deaths. The funds will be added to the school’s endowment. “At the end of the day, it was a family decision,” commented Tricia. “It was important to us that Erin, Bailey and Kelsey were supportive of and interested in giving back to KCD. Each of our girls has a different but very real personal connection with the school, and they were pleased to be a part of supporting its long-term future.” Jeff, the school’s current Board Chair, shared: “Trish and I feel very fortunate to have had the opportunity to send our children to KCD. We believe that the quality of the education, the close personal relationships with faculty and the inclusive, participative

Benjamin G. Robertson Sr.

environment will have a significant and lasting impact on our girls’ lives. By including KCD in our estate planning, we hope to provide the same opportunity for other families.”

Benjamin G. Robertson Sr., one of the founders of Louisville Country Day, devoted his time, talent and treasure to LCD for 21 years, and even had the foresight to contribute to the advancement of the school after his death. In his will, Mr. Robertson decreed that our school be the ultimate beneficiary of a charitable remainder trust. This trust, established in 1969, has already distributed over

$1 million to KCD’s permanent endowment, and we expect to receive millions more in the years to come. In recognition of his generous and innovative gift, KCD has established the Benjamin G. Robertson Sr. Society: The Planned Giving Program for KCD. It is our hope that we will augment Mr. Robertson’s legacy by creating a robust planned giving society named in his memory.

Friends Can “Lend” Investments with Exceptional Tax Savings want to make an

“I important gift during my lifetime to help Kentucky Country Day School, but I want to keep control of all my financial resources until after my death.” – Mrs. P. “I would like to assist the School with a major gift from my estate, but I feel I have an obligation to leave everything to my children.” – Mr. R. Do either of those sentiments reflect your personal situation? If so, you might consider a special gift technique that allows you to give KCD merely the use of investment assets, similar to being “on loan.” To employ an agricultural analogy, you would let KCD receive the “fruit from your orchard” for several years, but you or your family would keep the trees. Such gifts allow you to control the eventual distribution of all your property and share a meaningful gift between family beneficiaries and Kentucky Country Day School.

Income Tax and Gift Tax Savings Suppose a friend of Kentucky Country Day School owns bonds earning $50,000 annual interest. Our friend could transfer the bonds into an arrangement that pays the interest to the school for ten years (the time period is up to the donor). The donor’s taxable income would be reduced by $50,000 a year for the next ten years, after which the bonds could pass to family beneficiaries at greatly reduced gift or estate tax.

Our donor alternatively could receive an income tax charitable deduction of about $383,000 and be assured of having the bonds returned to him or his family after ten years. The only drawback to this plan is that the donor would be taxed on all the annual interest, but those taxes could be avoided if tax-free bonds are used to make the gift.

A Satisfying – But Temporary – Estate Gift Friends can reduce or even eliminate federal transfer taxes (gift, estate or generationskipping taxes) by providing Kentucky Country Day School with a temporary stream of income from their estate plans before family beneficiaries eventually receive all the estate’s assets. If a person’s heirs are fairly young (grandchildren, for example), they may be in a position to wait several decades before receiving the gift assets, making it feasible to eliminate taxes on estates of virtually any size – thanks to significant estate tax charitable deductions.

Example: John is a 70-year-old widower and long-time supporter of Kentucky Country Day School. His net worth is $30 million. John is worried about federal estate taxes – and he’s also concerned whether his son and daughter, both in their early 30s, will be able to handle large inheritances responsibly at their young ages. John wants to do something truly significant for KCD through his estate plan, but also wants to provide for his children. A trust set up in John’s will can pay income to the School temporarily and ultimately pass all trust principal to the children, with significant estate tax savings. As a result, it’s a form of charitable giving that is more appealing to surviving family members. And, as in the case of John’s children, a 10- or 15-year wait following their father’s death might not hurt the beneficiaries – that is, they may be more

mature and better able to handle large sums of money at an older age. So John might leave $10 million outright to the children at his death and $20 million to a trust that helps Kentucky Country Day School for a number of years but eventually benefits his son and daughter. Are any of the ideas we have discussed of interest to you? If so, please contact Chris Brice at (502) 423-0440 or chris.brice@kcd.org.

Sun Setting Quickly on IRA Gifts here’s only a short time left to take

T advantage of an opportunity to make tax-free distributions to charity from an IRA. The owner of a traditional or Roth IRA who has reached age 70½ may direct the custodian to distribute up to $100,000 to charity through December 31, 2007. Although no charitable deduction is available, the income tax that would be owed on a distribution is avoided. Qualified charitable distributions also count toward the owner’s required minimum distributions. If you’re planning a gift this year from your IRA, keep these points in mind:

Have the IRA custodian make the distri-

bution directly to us. If you receive a check personally and then write a check in our name, you will owe tax on the distribution. You must have reached age 70½ by the

date of the gift. Distributions may be made only to

public charities such as KCD, not donor advised funds or private foundations. The gift must be made by December 31. Call our office before making the dis-

tribution. That allows us to work with your IRA custodian and give you proper receipt.

Studies, Surveys and Not So Surprising Findings onfirming scientifically what many donors have known for years, a team of economists and psychologists from the University of Oregon determined that the parts of the brain associated with pleasure are activated by donating money to charity. In other words, philanthropy just feels good. The findings were reported recently in the journal Science.

C

Another study, this one done by U.S. Trust, revealed that philanthropy was a high priority for wealthy individuals. The 2007 Survey of Affluent Americans focused on individuals with more than $5 million in investable assets and found that 88% said they give because they want to give something back to society, while 72% said they want to make a difference in the world. Tax considerations were cited by only 33% as a reason for giving. Both of these findings support what many of our friends tell us about giving to support our programs – even those with considerably less than $5 million in investable assets. We are often told, “I just want to give back to Kentucky Country

Day School for what I have received,” or simply, “I enjoy giving to KCD.” Tax savings available from the gifts are generally just an added bonus for doing what “feels good.” Another ongoing survey by the National Committee on Planned Giving (NCPG) is tracking gifts to charity from donors’ IRAs. As mentioned earlier, under the Pension Protection Act of 2006, donors age 70½ and older may direct the trustee or custodian of an IRA to make gifts of up to $100,000 to charity. The ability to make these qualified charitable distributions is set to expire at the end of 2007. According to NCPG, charities responding to its survey reported 5,814 distributions, with a total value of more than $100 million at last report. This includes gifts made in 2006 and 2007. Kentucky Country Day School has received a number of gifts from IRAs, and we hope more donors will take advantage of this opportunity. To learn how you can make a gift through your IRA, please feel free to call our office.
