With your support, 2010-2011 proved to be another highly successful year for Kentucky Country Day. We are fortunate to cite a strong enrollment, an expanding and increasingly innovative curriculum, a growing endowment, and an outstanding faculty and staff, to name just a few examples, as indicators of KCD’s strength. Those successes are largely the result of your generosity – of time, talent, and treasure – as well as the deliberate planning of our Board of Trustees and execution by the administration, faculty, and staff. In short, our success is a team effort.

In many ways Kentucky Country Day, standing on this solid foundation, is in a period of transition. We have recently completed one of the most successful, if not the most successful, fundraising periods in the school’s history, culminating in the construction of our new theater. We are currently engaged in our “self study” process as part of our reaccredidation which will lead to our next strategic plan. Simply put, KCD is contemplating what lies on its horizon. I am pleased to say, though, that while we think about the KCD for future generations, we remain focused on ensuring that today’s students continue to be provided an experience befitting their many and varied talents. Perhaps nothing proves this point more than a brief poem recently written by current seventh grader, Kendall Beache: Light Blue; the color of the clear morning sky Gold; the color of the sun that shines upon our faces Together they make a perfect day Together they make a perfect Kentucky Country Day Kendall’s words remind us that there is much to appreciate about our unique community. Dear KCD Parents, Alumni, and Friends, I never cease to be amazed at the vibrancy and energy of this campus and 2010-2011 was certainly no exception. The activities that took place during the year are simply too numerous to list here, but there are a few that come to mind that help exemplify what an extraordinary community KCD is.

From the Head of School

It is difficult to imagine a secondary school that hosted a Grammy winning singer, Iris Dement, and a New York Times bestselling author, Wendy Mogel, in the same year. Or a school whose students and faculty worked together to send a 40 foot shipping container filled with books, clothing, medical supplies, and classroom furniture across the Atlantic to our friends in Tamale, Ghana. Not to be forgotten, and most important, are the extraordinary achievements that take place in the classrooms at KCD everyday – a breakthrough on a challenging calculus problem for instance, or perhaps a passion inspired in a second grader learning about the planets. These accomplishments are made possible by a string of events – in the case of Wendy Mogel that would be our Parent Association, led by amazing volunteers, arranging for her presentation in our new assembly hall which was built as a result of the generosity of our donors. Whether it’s the Parent Association, the Booster Club, the Fine Arts Guild, or simply an individual donor or volunteer, we are all working towards the same goal: a community that ensures that our students, teachers, and coaches have the resources they need to thrive.
