connections is a magazine for and about alumni of Kentucky Country Day School, Louisville Country Day School, The Kentucky Home School for Girls, The Kentucky Military Institute, and Aquinas Preparatory School. Connections is published twice each year by the Communications Office of Kentucky Country Day School. Free subscriptions are available to all alumni, parents of students, and other friends of KCD. KCD firmly supports the principle that the admission of students, the employment of staff, the operations of the program, and the governance of the school be open to all who are qualified, regardless of race, gender, creed, color, or national origin.

From the Alumni Director Dear Alumni, So much has happened at KCD since our last issue! The KCD campus has changed significantly with the opening of the KCD Theater in the fall of 2010, the improvements to the baseball facility — including new dugouts in the spring of 2011 — and the installation of the field hockey/lacrosse turf field in the summer of 2012. The improvements to our athletic fields complement our competitive program and allow us to stand out among our peers.

The opening of the KCD Theater has allowed KCD to become the leader in fine arts in the East End and to open our doors to the community at large for conferences, programs, and the KCD Concert Series.

We have made some changes in the Alumni Office as well.

I would like to offer a big thank you to Elizabeth Sherrard, who served as Alumni Director from 2009 – 2011. Under Elizabeth’s leadership, alumni event participation grew steadily. She built the annual KCD Golf Scramble into a sold-out event with a waiting list and turned it into an an event that actually brings in money for the school.

In September of 2011, five years and two kids later, I was thrilled to return to KCD to run the Alumni Office once again. It is my hope that we will continue to see an increase in alumni participation both in events and fundraising. We are a remarkable school with a remarkable past, and I look forward finding ways to celebrate our history.

With that in mind, we are excited to announce the fall Alumni Weekend.

The annual event will coincide with the students’ Spirit Week and with the Homecoming football game and dance. Alumni Weekend will be October 12 – 13, 2012, and several events will be hosted on campus. The details are outlined on the inside back cover of this issue. I hope that you will consider attending some or all of the events we have planned. It will be a great opportunity not only to catch up with friends, but also to see the amazing improvements to the campus.

Morning Announcements The arts have a new home in the KCD Theater KCD’s new theater and performing arts center is now entering its third year, and it’s already hard to imagine how we lived without it.

The new building was dedicated in October of 2010 and finally provides a firstrate venue for our talented performing arts groups. Having wing space, a scene shop, and fly space has had a huge impact on the drama program and has allowed drama directors Kate Scinta and Trudy Wheeler to stage productions that would have been impossible in the Commons.

Not surprisingly, the building has quickly become a central part of the KCD community. All three divisions now hold regular meetings in the theater auditorium, and the large, airy lobby has hosted alumni receptions as well as numerous events, including KCD’s flagship fundraiser, KCDate.

The facility has also served to connect KCD with the larger community in a meaningful way. Local arts and performing groups rent the facility on a regular basis, and the theater has hosted large regional events such as the upcoming Healthy Foods, Local Farms Conference and the recent Louisville Google Meetup (see p. 5).

The theater has hosted movie screenings as well as the Parent Association Speaker Series, which over the last two years has brought in nationally renowned speakers Wendy Mogel and Ashley Merryman.

Finally, the theater also serves as home for the KCD Concert Series, which kicked off its inaugural season with a sold-out performance by Iris Dement in November of 2010. A number of other artists have played the venue over the last few years, including Josh Ritter, Nanci Griffith, and James McMurtry. The current concert season is still being booked, and you can keep up with events at the KCD Theater by visiting www.kcd.org/theater.

In all, events such as this have brought hundreds of new visitors to our campus and have had a significant impact in making KCD’s campus, programs, and mission more visible to the larger Louisville community. As the KCD Theater enters its third year, we are proud to see that it is becoming a resource for the whole community.

Once again, we would like to thank all the alumni, parents, grandparents, trustees, faculty, and friends whose support helped make this dream a reality.

Morning Announcements Mr. Jansing retires after four decades of dedicated service to KCD

It’s hard to imagine KCD without George Jansing. Mr. Jansing joined the faculty of Louisville Country Day School in 1971.

During his 41 years years, he has seen the school through changes both large and small: the merger that formed Kentucky Country Day School in 1972, the move to our current campus in 1978, and numerous periods of change and growth since then. Through it all, Mr. Jansing has been a steady source of great teaching, good humor, and genuine kindness. He has served KCD students in many roles: as a teacher, baseball coach, Quick Recall sponsor, advisor, and college counselor.

Anne Glosky, who has worked with Mr. Jansing as a fellow English teacher and college counselor, offered these words during last year’s Class Day assembly: “I have often referred to Mr. Jansing — when he’s not around, of course — as a prince of a man. After all of these years, he brings a host of positive and admirable qualities to our school every day: intellect, wit,

kindness, compassion, humor, humility, sensitivity, and creativity. His is a kind, generous, and joyful spirit.”

We offer Mr. Jansing our best wishes as he leaves KCD to become a full time husband, father, and grandfather.

Morning Announcements Alumni lead career workshops

Last spring, a total of about forty alumni participated in a series of career workshops for KCD upper schoolers. During the workshops, alumni described the type of work they do and answered questions from students.

Each session covered a particular set of professions. The first covered careers in business, finance, and small business ownership. The second covered careers in law and medicine, and the third explored careers in the arts.

The workshops were organized by dean of students and KCD alumnus Pat Mulloy ’98.

Gil Reyes ‘97 is upper school guest speaker

This May, upper school students welcomed alumnus Gil Reyes to campus as X-period guest speaker. Mr. Reyes, who graduated from KCD in 1997, is a congressional aide for Congressman John Yarmuth and the founder of local theater company Theater 502. During his remarks, Mr. Reyes told the story of his personal and professional journey, including his experiences as a gay student at KCD and the challenges he faced in sharing his identity with his friends and family.

“At the very basic level I wanted to personalize LGBTQ experiences for the students and encourage them to be open minded to the challenges their peers face,” Mr. Reyes said. “The larger implication is that by accepting themselves as well as each other they will enter into a much better world than even my generation. I’m really excited for them.”

Mr. Reyes was warmly welcomed by our students, with many staying afterwards to thank him for speaking. “I thought that Mr. Reyes did a fantastic job,” said Kelli Huneke ’12. “What I got out of him speaking is that no matter what your sexual orientation may be, we are all the same. We all work, want a family, and want to love and be loved. He took a serious topic and made it a funny and relaxing but also inspirational.”

KCD hosts Kentucky’s first Google Education Conference

This summer, KCD organized and hosted Kentucky’s first Google Meetup, a fullday professional development conference showcasing Google’s education apps as well as best practices for integrating technology into the curriculum. The Louisville Google Meetup was a huge success, drawing more than 200 private, parochial, and public school teachers from across Kentucky and southern Indiana.

Most sessions were run by KCD teachers and focused on how Google’s suite of education apps can be used in the classroom to facilitate communication, collaboration, and innovation.

Google employee Kelly Fee delivered the keynote speech and also ran a number of sessions. “I was very pleased with the turnout at the KCD conference and delighted by the engagement of the audience,” she said. “To see teachers sharing best practices and teaching one another between sessions was inspirational and reaffirmed

One attendee remarked, “This was one of the most enjoyable, well organized, friendly, and professional conferences I have attended . . . Thanks for challenging me to reflect on what I do in the classroom and for giving me tools to use to help my teaching meet our 21st Century goals.

Overall, it was a perfect day.”

This conference grew out of discussions surrounding the adoption of Google Apps for Education in the Middle School this year (see p. 7 for the story). The conference will be held annually, and we hope to expand in order to allow more teachers to attend.

KCD captures state title in boys’ tennis

For the first time in 44 years, KCD has a state championship doubles team! On their way to the title, Matt Browne ’12 and Collier Bouchillon ’13 knocked off topranked opponents Manual, St. Xavier, and Trinity, going the entire tournament without losing a set. Congratulations to Collier and Matt on capturing the first boys’ doubles state title at KCD since 1968!

Aquinas alumnus receives Exceptional Service Award

Lowry Watkins Jr., a 1964 graduate of KCD predecessor Aquinas Preparatory School, was presented with the Exceptional Service Award during the Chair’s Reception held in the Fine Arts Center last fall.

During the presentation, KCD Board Chair LouAnn Atlas ’78 said, “Few, if any, have had as broad an impact on KCD as a result of their philanthropy. Over the years, Lowry has established endowments to benefit the tennis, baseball, and soccer programs, as well as the library. He contributed to the construction of this theater by naming two seats, one in memory of his brother. Most recently, Lowry has established an endowment to provide a full scholarship, renewed annually, to a deserving student based on merit and need. In doing so, he has enriched the KCD experience for generations of students, and his

generosity will make the KCD experience possible for students who wouldn’t otherwise have this sort of opportunity.”

Fine Arts Guild launches Guest Artist Series

Thanks to the support of the KCD Fine Arts Guild, a new Guest Artist Series is bringing prominent local, national, and international artists to KCD. The series kicked off in February with two performances by Celtic Crossroads, a musical/ dance group from Ireland. The group played two sets in the KCD Theater and received rave reviews for their high-energy performance.

In May, Kentucky Shakespeare performed selected scenes from their contemporary adaptation of Romeo and Juliet for middle and upper school students.

According to music teacher Jeannine Ary, the series will help KCD build relationships and create partnerships with local arts organizations.

KCD receives model Title IX report

Last spring, AD Tim Green posted some of the highlight’s from KCD’s most recent Title IX report. We are proud that KCD is

a school that works hard to achieve gender equity in athletics.

• 49% of all athletes participating in our program were female; 51% were male.

• 49.7% of athletic department expenditures were spent on girls’ sports; 50.3% on boys.

• Coaching expertise/years’ experience tilted toward the girls by an average of 0.2 years per coach.

• We had 1086 participants in our athletic program last year: 570 in high school programs and 516 in middle school. (For reporting purposes, one student who plays three sports counts as three.)

Girls’ lacrosse captures third state title

Last spring, KCD’s varsity girls’ lacrosse team defeated defending champion Sacred Heart by a score of 12-7 to capture their third state championship in five years. It was sweet revenge for the Bearcats, who lost to SHA in double overtime in last season’s final after downing the Valkyries twice during the regular season.

With a brilliant five-goal performance, senior midfielder Caroline Flowers ’12 was named the MVP of the championship game. According to Flowers, “We were just so focused and ready to go. Nothing was going to stand in our way of reclaiming that title. I am so proud of our team.”

KCD makes a connection with West Liberty Elementary

Although the two schools are more than 150 miles apart, last spring KCD began building a relationship with the students and faculty of West Liberty Elementary, a school destroyed by the tornadoes that devastated much of eastern Kentucky last spring.

Within days, KCD had planned a major schoolwide project to support the school. The KCD community responded with overwhelming support, and donations poured in to all three divisions. On Friday afternoon, students and teachers helped pack a 26-foot truck nearly full of snacks, clothes, books, PE and playground equipment, and other items.

The supplies were delivered to West Liberty Elementary on March 23. West Liberty teacher Amber Day Adams responded that “I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for the kindness, love, and generosity from KCD! I know each and every one of your students and parents have put so much love into each and every thing you all sent! I just want to say thank you and that our students have been so blessed to have you all be a part of helping us.”

College participation strong among KCD athletes

The KCD athletic program has seen a growing trend with its athletes in the last decade: more students are participating in college athletics. Even though the number of students enrolled at KCD has grown substantially, the number of KCD students playing sports in college has outpaced the

enrollment figures. The 2011 senior class has a school record 17 athletes participating in intercollegiate athletics, representing 21% of the entire class. There were an impressive 10 athletes in the class of 2012.

The KCD Athletic Booster Club tracks collegiate participation by sport, class, and college. Since the school’s inception in 1972 – 73, 294 KCD students have participated in college athletics — a figure that represents over 13.3% of the school’s graduates.

However, in the last ten years the participation number has increased to nearly 16%.

From these 294 college athletes, field hockey (64) is the most popular sport to receive former Bearcat athletes, followed by football (50), men’s soccer (31) and men’s basketball (21) respectively.

Our athletes have competed at more than 110 different institutions. Many of these schools are prominent NCAA Division III programs, but nearly every class has produced at least two NCAA Division I athletes. The most popular college-athlete destination is Centre College with 43 participants. Davidson College is second with 16, followed by Miami University (11), Yale University (9), Denison University (9), and Washington & Lee (9).

KCD installs turf field for field hockey and lacrosse

The newest addition to KCD’s athletic facilities is a state-of-the-art turf field for the field hockey and lacrosse teams. The new field is located in front of the Parsley Pavilion.

The field surface is AstroTurf Game Day Grass 3DX, which has been installed at many major universities around the country, including Duke, Stanford, Wake Forest, Penn State, and Ohio State, to

Ribbon cutting dedicates baseball renovations

Last spring, KCD families joined the baseball team for a ribbon cutting celebrating the newly renovated baseball facility. The improvements include new dugouts and a new backstop as well as improved netting behind home plate and a windscreen along the outfield fence. All of these improvements create a better and safer atmosphere for both players and fans.

During the ceremony, KCD parents Richard Klein, Todd Lyles, David Winkler, and Tom Eckert joined the team on the field during the dedication in recognition of their generous support and oversight of the construction project. The next phase of the project includes plans for a new press box and concession stand.

Last season, the Bearcats accumulated the most season wins of any baseball team in KCD history. During the same season, Coach Maione reached the milestone of 200 career wins.

Six alumni receive athletic honors

Arts Guild purchases alumnus’ paintings for Arts Center

Thanks to the Fine Arts Guild, KCD has acquired a pair of paintings by Martin Benson ’05, who is now working as an artist in New Orleans. The works are an untitled pair of abstract, mixed media paintings that will be hung in the new Fine Arts Center. The paintings were delivered in December and will be installed later this year.

Middle school teachers and students began using Google Apps for Education at the beginning of last year, and teachers across all grade levels and disciplines have been enthusiastic about the way these tools enhance communication and collaboration in the classroom.

On February 10, six outstanding alumni athletes were inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame. In addition, former girls’ basketball coach John Filar was recognized for his induction last year into the Royal Bearcat Society. Mr. Filar could not attend last year’s ceremony due to the birth of a grandchild.

Inductees are recognized for bringing honor and distinction to their particular sport and to the athletic program at Kentucky Country Day School. The athlete or coach must have brought measurable success to a particular sport, including outstanding recognition from conference, local, regional, or state level competition.

MorningAthletic Bearcat Announcements Hall of Fame L. Courtney Giesel ’75 was one of the most versatile and inspirational football players ever to play for the Bearcats during the 1970s. As a team captain, he led his 1974 football squad to a 7-3 season with an impressive upset over #16 ranked Lexington Sayre. Mr. Giesel started in numerous positions, including quarterback, passing for over 800 yards and rushing for 150 yards; defensive safety, collecting a team high four interceptions; punter, averaging 34.3; and kicker, scoring 20 extra points. His overall skills set a school record of 132 career points. Some of his other career highlights involved kicking 7 game points, setting a former school record; kicking a 32-yard field goal; receiving 3 game touchdowns as a junior; and completing over 50% of his 111 passes. Mr. Giesel won the 1974 Robertson Trophy, the highest KCD football award. As a star in other sports, such as basketball and track, he earned the KCD Beam Senior Athlete of the Year Award. He followed his gridiron-style talents to become a star rugby player for Tulane University of Louisiana. Mr. Giesel continues to play in rugby in various leagues in the region. Today, he lives in Louisville working as a successful banking executive. He is married to Terri Giesel, who teaches at KCD, and his son Lincoln is a 2009 KCD graduate.

Joseph L. Hamilton LCD ’69 scored 896 career points, making him Louisville Country Day’s leading basketball scorer. He was a captain of the successful 1969 squad that earned a 17 win, 5 loss season record. Every year he competed in varsity basketball, the Daymen enjoyed winning seasons. His 896 career points highlighted a 1969 senior season in which he averaged 20.9 points and 7.5 rebounds per game. His noteworthy play as the leading scorer in the Seventh Region earned him a place on the All-District Tournament, AllSeventh Region First Team, and All-State Honorable Mention Teams. He was also named Country Day’s most valuable player in 1969. Mr. Hamilton also contributed to the LCD Daymen golf team, qualifying for the state tournament both his junior and senior season with a 21st place finish during the 1969 season. He was a dual athlete at Williams College, where he was a member of the basketball and golf teams. He earned a law degree from the University of Louisville. Today, he is married and is a successful attorney living in Louisville.

He has four children, two of whom are current students at KCD.

Bill Hamilton Jr. LCD ’66 was the leading scorer for the 1966 Louisville Country Day Tri-State Conference Basketball Championship team, which concluded with a 13 win, 6 loss record. His season average of 19.6 points per game placed third in the Seventh Region for individual scoring. Mr. Hamilton’s career featured 566 total points and positions on the 1966 All-Seventh Region and All-State Honorable Mention Teams. He was also named the team’s most valuable player in 1966. All three of his varsity basketball teams gathered winning records. Overall, Mr. Hamilton earned 13 varsity letters at LCD in four different sports: cross country, track, baseball, and basketball. His college athletic career included playing basketball for Williams College. After the completion of his undergraduate degree, Mr. Hamilton went to law school at Washington & Lee. Today, he is married with one child and lives in Tucson, Arizona, and Sunapee, New Hampshire, with a career in trust banking and investment management.

Bearcat Morning Athletic Announcements Hall of Fame John R. Crockett III ’82 is considered one of Country Day’s greatest basketball players. He scored a school record 1,326 career points, averaging over 15 points per games as a sophomore, 19.61 points per game as a junior, and an outstanding 21.26 points per game as a senior. In 1981, he established a new school record by scoring 37 game points and was able to score 22 points or more 12 times during his career. His talents were recognized by twice being named All-Seventh Region Honorable Mention and All-District. He received the Steve Hoenig Boys’ Basketball Award (the top KCD boys’ basketball award) in 1981 and 1982. Mr. Crockett was also an All-Region baseball player, receiving the Watkins Baseball Award, the top KCD baseball award. He also received the Beam Senior Athlete of the Year Award. After his high school basketball career, Mr. Crockett utilized his strong shooting arm to throw baseballs for the University of North Carolina. Today, Mr. Crockett is married and lives in Louisville, where he works as an attorney and a managing partner for a top law firm. All three of his children are KCD students or graduates.

Stuart Crawford Robinson ’76 played a major role in bringing one state championship and three state runner-up girls’ golf titles to the KCD trophy case.

She started making waves in the Kentucky high school girls’ golf world as early as eighth grade, placing second in the Jefferson County Regional tournament and eventually 16th in the state. During her high school days, Ms. Crawford qualified for the state tournament all four years. She finished in the top six during each of those years, placing as high as 3rd on the 1974 State Championship team. Her top individual scores include a 75 for 18 holes (ranking 3rd on the school’s records) and 164 for 36 holes. An injury prevented Ms. Crawford from playing golf for the University of North Carolina. Today, she is married and has two daughters, Gray and Lizzie. Both are graduates of Kentucky Country Day.

Woody Franklin ’80 is considered the most successful diver in Kentucky Country Day history. His diving career at KCD spans a four-year period between 1977 and 1980. During that span, he placed fifth in the state his freshman year, third his sophomore and junior seasons, and as state runner up his senior year.

His first-place regional score of 410.80 remains a Bearcat school record. Mr. Franklin continued his diving career by competing for Furman University. He continues to maintain those personal ties to the Bearcat diving program by serving as an instructor to many Bearcat divers. Today, Mr. Franklin is married with two young children and is considered one of the top diving instructors in the state of Kentucky.

Class chairs play an integral part in the life of alumni and development affairs at KCD. They represent a connection between KCD and each graduating class, and their single most important mission is to maintain close, personal ties among classmates. Although KCD will help with reunion plans, each class chair serves as the lead organizer for class reunions.

After four miserably hot years in New Braunfels, Texas, I landed in Denver a year ago August 1st, and I am so happy to be back in Colorado. In addition to making a new home, I have also embarked on a new career path. Whoever said life gets boring as we get older was very mistaken! It was held at Clover Lane restaurant. The lunch was divine, and it was such fun seeing various people from many different classes. We were treated to lunch and given pencils, which I gave to my daughter Angie Aberson [Wildstein ’83], who attended KCD. It was a special day and a most memorable luncheon. Tom is currently the director of the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University.

George Sanderlin ’75 is starting his fourth year as a community coach for both cross country and track and field at North Atlanta High School in Atlanta, Georgia.

On the track, he coaches the endurance events (800 – 3200) and in the field, he coaches the jumps. This past season, one of his athletes, Malik Epps, scored in the Georgia state track meet in both the 800 and 1500, setting a school record. Epps

Brookdale’s the largest owner/operator of retirement and assisted living communities in the country. Jamie is the chair of the Fashion Design Deptartment at O’More College of Design in Franklin, Tennessee.

Louisa Castner lives in Minneapolis with her partner, Beth Kilburg, and their two king-sized (140 lb.) Leonbergers. She works two part-time jobs: as a freelance academic editor and as a Rosen Method Bodywork practitioner (kind of like massage with a focus on emotions and muscle tension). After thirty years of playing soccer, she is finally hanging up her cleats after blowing out her knee. She says perhaps her coaching career will now commence . . . she’ll see how that looks after surgery.

“Women Walking,” a collection of six paintings by Louisville artist Monica Mahoney, was recently exhibited at Proof on Main, the restaurant attached to the 21c museum/hotel. Monica also designed 21c’s two vehicles: the Pip Mobile (a limo covered with red beads) and Blind Spot (a mirror-covered convertible).

David Davis was awarded the 2010 Industrial Broker of the Year award by the Kentucky Commercial Real Estate Alliance. David is president of Commonwealth Commercial Real Estate in Louisville.

David Grubbs was recently promoted to associate professor with tenure in Brooklyn College’s Conservatory of Music. Recent tours of his include concerts in Japan, Israel, and Italy, and he is currently completing the book Records Ruin the Landscape: John Cage, The Sixties, and Sound Recording for Duke University Press.

Stephen Hyers is teaching playwriting at Elon University and North Carolina A&T State University. He acted in and served as fight director for the feature film Swimming in a Lake of Fire.

Professionally, in addition to being in private practice, I’m on the faculty at the University of Utah. I’ve been married to my wife Sybil for two years. Recreationally, I spend my time whitewater kayaking, alpine skiing, mountain biking, and chukar hunting. Rob Wahl and I have gotten together every year for about the last twenty to bike and or ski. I also am a writer for our local paper, the Boise Weekly.”

O’Bryan Broecker Worley is married to Dr. Daniel Worley, visiting professor of Music Composition at Centre College and the University of Louisville. They have a daughter, Taylor, who is attending Ballard High School. The Worley family is happy to report that their experiment in food awareness is still going strong.

1986 class chair: Lee Garlove lgarlove@middreut.com Diane Anstine is an associate professor and the chair of economics at North Central College, where she was named the first holder of the Mary Schneller Rosar Professor of Economics endowed chair. Diane has been a member of North Central College’s faculty since 1997. She was awarded the College’s Dissinger Award for Junior Faculty in 2000 after colleagues and students commended her for her teaching ability. In 2003, she was granted tenure, and in 2009 she was named a Ruge Fellow, a program designed to recognize, celebrate, and reward faculty for their contributions to the teaching and learning environment at North Central College. Diane is also the advisor to North Central’s economics honor society Omicron Delta Epsilon, and Faculty Athletic Representative to the NCAA. Her interests in teaching and research are in microeconomics, specifically industrial organization and public policy and sports economics.

I am now a trial attorney (commercial construction and business litigation) and am presently the managing partner of my firm, Murphy Austin Adams Schoenfeld LLP. Susan and I do not have children, though we do have a fur kid: a rambunctious seven-year-old Belgian Tervuren. In our spare time (which is sure hard to come by these days), we love to travel around the west coast (and Kauai), ride our Harley (Road King Custom), and spend time at our other home in South Lake Tahoe, where we were able to fit in quite a few ski days last year!”

John Birnsteel is living in London, where he’s been for the past fifteen years. He’s head of strategy at FutureBrand, a brand and design company. He’s married to Lindsey, and they have two young girls: Brooke (born May, 2010) and Sally (born December, 2011).

Daniel Dickstein: “My wife Liz and I live in Rhode Island with our son, Jake (5), daughter Hannah (3), and dog-ter Sophie (9). After KCD, I finished Brown’s eight-year combined college/med school program, then stayed for another five years in their combined pediatrics, psychiatry, and child/adolescent psychiatry residency. That’s where Liz and I met.

We moved back to Rhode Island five years ago when Jake was eight weeks old, Liz to work at Hasbro Children’s Hospital and me to start the PediMIND program — a research program devoted to understanding what’s going on in the minds of kids with psychiatric problems, including bipolar disorder, ADHD, suicide, and autism (www.pedimind.org or pedimind.lifespan.org). Ultimately, we’re trying to develop scans and tests that will make diagnosing and treating psychiatric problems better, i.e. earlier and more specific. Christopher Harkess a nd his wife Kate live in Seattle with their six-year-old daughter Esme. Christopher co-owns Yacht Systems Northwest, a company that installs and services marine systems.

Jennifer Roos was recently named head women’s basketball coach at Bowling Green State University. She assumed the head coaching position after 11 years as an assistant coach on the BG staff, the last eight as associate head coach. Jennifer joined Curt Miller’s staff in July of 2001; during her tenure, she was in charge of the Falcon defense and also served as the team’s recruiting coordinator. After three years as an assistant coach with the Falcons, she was elevated to associate head coach in the summer of 2004. According to the university’s athletic department, Jennifer was “a major reason for the program’s incredible run of success over the last decade-plus.”

Carter Wood Sartor: “I have been married to Patrick Sartor for six years, and we have two amazing boys: Roberts and Lunsford. They are enjoying Second

Presbyterian Weekday School. I am a stay-at-home mom. I am on the board of a nonprofit called Hope Scarves (www. hopescarves.org), which shares scarves and stories of hope with women who are experiencing hair loss due to cancer, injury, or illness. I have enjoyed keeping in contact with KCD by serving on the Royal Blue and Gold Committee and was recently honored to work with lower school students in creating a school song.”

Rosy Thind: “I have been married for four years and have two children, Simon (2) and Sara (3 months). I am working part-time in private practice in pediatrics in Cincinnati. Before kids, I used to travel (mainly taking cycling trips around the U. S. and world) and cycling was my main hobby. Since having kids, I spend a lot of time outside playing in the yard or at the park. Simon loves trucks, especially fire trucks, and we pass our neighborhood fire station on our walks.

The firemen are nice and let Simon ‘drive’ the truck, which he loves. I have been in Cincinnati since 1997, when I moved here for my pediatric residency. It’s close enough that we can get to Louisville for a day or weekend.”

Betsy Touma lives in Louisville. She is married to Yano Touma, and they have three children: Maddie (11), Mason (9), and Parker (8). They all currently attend KCD and love it.

Kathy Wisneski: “I live in Marietta, Georgia, and have been married for 12 years. Mark and I have two kids: William (10) and Kate (8). After teaching special ed for seven years, I ‘retired’ to stay at home when Will was born. Most of my time is spent as a cheerleader on the sidelines at one of their sporting events, but I also sit on the board of trustees for the foundation at the kids’ school.

Last spring, the exhibition “365” at the Kentucky School of Art showcased a series of self-portraits created

by Gibbs Rounsavall ’94 over the course of a year. The twenty drawings on display were a small part of a much larger project, in which Gibbs challenged himself to create a self-portrait every day for a year.

The project turned out to be a challenging one. “There were days when I was sick,” Gibbs recalled, “or when the last thing I wanted to do was look at myself. As I tell my students, though, art making is problem solving.”

Gibbs added a caption to each selfportrait as he completed it, and he describes the series as “a visual diary of the year. Those captions take me right back to the day, sometimes even more than the drawings do.”

Although these pieces are a departure from Gibbs’ usual, non-representational work, he found the process reawakening his interest in drawing and painting from life. “I found myself falling back in love with representational painting,” he said. “I’ve started a series of landscapes, which is something very different from my usual work.”

For the last six years, Gibbs has taught visual art at Fairdale High School, where he was named the Most Influential Teacher of the Year in 2011. He has a solo show coming up in April at the Green Building Gallery and a group show in October at Spalding University.

Eddie owns an insurance agency in Lynchburg, which has expanded to three employees since its start in 2008. He is active in the area’s homebrewing, triathlon, and cycling communities, occasionally teaches spin classes at his local YMCA, and heads an adult softball team. He is currently in discussions to have his beer on tap at a local eatery as well.

Dispatches Aerogrammes, the most recent book by Tania James ’99, is a collection of short stories that reads like a series of dispatches from far-off lands: one story follows a pair of Indian wrestlers in turn-of-the-century London; another concerns a girl who enters an arranged marriage with a ghost.

Tania visited Louisville in May of 2012 to read from Aerogrammes at Carmichael’s Bookstore. Her debut novel, Atlas of Unknowns, was published in 2009. Recently, her essays have appeared in the New York Times and Salon.com.

In 2007, a group of young alumni (Tommy Gift ’97, Jackson Andrews ’00, Alex Gift ’00, Cordt Huneke ’01, and Charlie Farnsley ’00), became interested in the concept of uncovering nonprofit organizations in Louisville that were doing amazing work but somehow went largely unnoticed in the community. The causes championed by these groups were often issues that affected multiple generations and were best addressed by bringing together existing, emerging, and aspiring community advocates to learn more and think collaboratively. Those ideas become the cornerstone of the organization formed by these young alumni: Old Louisville Meets New Louisville.

Today, the group continues to advocate for local non-profits and to seek opportunities for crossgenerational collaboration. The group has demonstrated a history of partnering with well-led, local nonprofits such as the Blue Apple Players and the National Stem Cell Foundation. Most recently, the group has organized a 5k Run/Walk for the West End School and a benefit dinner for 21st Century Parks at the Parklands of Floyds Fork. Over 400 guests attended the dinner, which featured a three-course dinner served in a walnut grove and a private concert by three-time Grammy Winner Sam Bush. The event raised over $100,000 for 21st Century Parks!

Deep Roots In her most recent solo album, Joan [Musselman] Shelley ’04 draws on the traditions of American roots music, but there’s something about the album that feels contemporary. The songs blend the traditional ingredients of roots music — banjo and acoustic guitar — with unexpected string and percussion arrangements, all anchored by the clarity of Joan’s voice.

Joan’s solo albums include Dawnlight and Ginko, which was just released this fall. She has also recorded a pair of albums with the band Maiden Radio, who opened for Abigail Washburn at the KCD Theater in January. Her most recent record, Farthest Field, is a collaboration with Daniel Martin Moore.

In Memoriam Owsley Brown Frazier LCD ’54

The KCD community was saddened this summer to hear of the death of Owsley Brown Frazier. Few individuals have had as profound an impact on Kentucky Country Day School as Mr. Frazier. As a 1954 graduate of Louisville Country Day School, Mr. Frazier was dedicated to creating a strong independent school for the Louisville community. He was a lifelong advocate of education, and KCD was fortunate to have been the recipient of both his leadership and his generosity.

As a trustee of the school, Mr. Frazier, along with David Jones, was responsible for relocating Kentucky Country Day School to its current campus in 1978. The decision must have seemed like a strange one at the time: eastern Jefferson County was still largely rural, and KCD’s new campus on a former farm must have seemed like a very remote place indeed.

That decision, however, proved to be both visionary and transformative. Thirty-four years later, KCD now sits at the center of one of the fastest growing economic centers in the county.

Mr. Frazier once again lent his leadership to the school during the 1994 campaign that modernized KCD’s athletic facilities and built the Upper School, which bears his name. “We have the opportunity to create an institution that will stand in the top tier of national independent schools,” he said during that campaign, “an institution that will benefit not

only the students of Kentucky Country Day School, but also the community of Louisville.”

Mr. Frazier’s three daughters all graduated from KCD: Laura in 1976, Catherine in 1978, and Annsley in 1981.

Four of his grandchildren are also alumni: Cordt Huneke ’01, Chase Huneke ’04, Brooke Huneke ’12, and Kelli Huneke ’12.

We are profoundly grateful to Mr. Frazier for his vision and his leadership.

We are proud that his legacy lives on at KCD.

ent, and grandparent. Mr. Walker was a very engaged KCD parent, particularly with respect to his children’s extracurricular activities. All three of his children are KCD graduates: Jeannine ’78, Andrea ’80, and Edward ’82. Currently, his granddaughters Malorie Eisenbrei ’13 and Daria Eisenbrei ’16 attend KCD. Mr. Walker’s name lives on at KCD through the generous 1981 gift that funded the track and field facilities that still exist today. A modest man, Mr. Walker insisted on honoring a KCD coach and administator with his gift; as a result the track was named the Monaco-Walker Track after KCD Athletic Director Tom Monaco.

The Walker family continues to distinguish itself on the Walker-named track: Mr. Walker’s daughter Andrea holds the 400 meter school record, and his granddaughter Malorie Eisenbrei received the girls’ track and field board award and placed fourth in the 2012 Class A Kentucky state track and field championships.

Walter D. Johnson passed away on September 10, 2011 at Norton Brownsboro Hospital. He was an athletic director and teacher at both KMI and KCD.

onnections are important to Maggie Barrett Keith ’03.

First is her connection to the 1,300 acres of Foxhollow Farm, which has been in her family since the 1930s. As co-owner and manager of Foxhollow, an organic farm in Crestwood, Maggie is always aware of the farmer’s connection to the land. She also loves the way that farming connects her with other people through her food: “One of the most satisfying things about farming is handing families food they can eat,” she says.

Maggie’s road to Foxhollow started at Appalachian State University, where she was studying entrepreneurship. It was there that she read The Omnivore’s Dilemma, Michael Pollan’s study of organic and industrial farming methods. “[That book] totally changed how I ate,” Maggie recalls. “It made me think about where my food was coming from — who was growing it and how it was being grown.” Those thoughts evolved during Maggie’s senior year into a business plan for a grass-fed beef farm. That plan became a reality in 2006 with the introduction of thirty head of cattle to Foxhollow land.

Maggie remembers those early years as challenging ones.

“When I first started selling at farmer’s markets in 2007, I was one of the only young women selling meat, and there just wasn’t that much meat at the market. I had one gentleman tell me that I’d never be able to make it, that I’d have tons of beef sitting in my freezer for the rest of my life. It was kind of good for me in a way, because whenever someone tells me I can’t do something, I just want to do it more.”

Maggie began taking her product to local chefs and letting them sample it. “The product spoke for itself, so in that sense it was easy,” she recalls. “A lot of the older people said it reminded them of how beef used to taste when they were growing up.”

As Maggie worked to get her business established, food culture was slowly changing around her. Bit by bit, markets were opening up for Foxhollow’s organic, sustainably raised product.

“Farm to table is a big thing now, and it’s become easier to go to farmer’s markets and sell.” Maggie reflects. “There are way more markets now than there were back then — not only farmer’s markets, but restaurants and schools.” * Foxhollow is a biodynamic farm, a method that is “similar to organic but goes a few steps further,” Maggie explains. “Instead of bringing in organic pesticides and herbicides, we make our own out of things that come from the land, like manure, chamomile, yarrow, stinging nettle — things we actually grow.”

ods, she says, are better for the animal, better for the land, and better for the customer. “When you rotate cattle properly, you keep both the cattle and the land healthy,” she explains. “Our cows are eating grass, which is what they’re meant to eat. They’re happier when they’re living the way that nature intended them to live. The benefit to the customer is that the meat’s better for you: lower in saturated fat, higher in antioxidants and vitamins.”

Maggie’s hard work in those early years is paying off. There are now 200 head of cattle grazing on Foxhollow land, and the number of employees has grown from two to nineteen. Several years ago, Maggie realized her longtime dream of growing produce at the farm. With the cattle operation in good hands, she’s been able to turn her attention to the garden. “My dream was always to be in the garden,” she admits. “I’ve always loved to play in the dirt, ever since I was little.” In 2009, Foxhollow opened its Farm Store, which finally provided a place for Maggie to sell Foxhollow’s meat, produce, and more.

Looking back, Maggie says she is sometimes surprised at the ways that KCD helped prepare her. “I loved Dr. Campbell’s creative writing class,” she says. “Being able to write well and to put some creativity into it was one of the big things I took away from KCD. It was one of the real advantages I had in business school.” Maggie also says that Chris Brice’s philanthropy class has had a lasting impact. “I volunteer a lot in my life because of that class,” she says. “It taught me the importance of volunteer work and how to be an active board member. We hold two big festivals each year at the farm, and I use those as fundraisers to give back to local organizations.”

Being a small business owner has not always been easy, and Maggie says her biggest challenge has been learning to take her time. “The most challenging thing when you’re starting a business is to take it slow. Sometimes that’s hard for me, but you’ve got to master the things you’re already doing before you add something new. I’ve always made sure that I’m hands on with anything I do here.”

Looking forward, Maggie imagines orchards, vineyards, maybe even wine. In the meantime, though, she continues to relish the connections that farming creates. “There’s a connection between the land and the animal or the vegetable,” she explains, “a connection between the farmer who grows the food and the people who eat it. At the farmer’s market, there are customers that come to my booth every week, and they want the vegetables I grow or the beef I raise. That’s the most rewarding thing to me, especially with families. I like to see kids eat our food.”

Alumni Events Former teacher Paul Hagenau hosted at reception KCD alumni and faculty welcomed

former teacher member Paul Hagenau back to campus for a reception on June 8, 2011.

Mr. Hagenau began his teaching career at Louisville Country Day in 1962 and taught at KCD until 1989. He is perhaps best known as one of the founders of Wild Kingdom Day and the leader of student trips to such exotic locations at Uganda, Nepal, New Caledonia, and Seychelles.

The entire KCD community was invited to the reception for Mr. Hagenau, which was held in the lobby of the new Fine Arts Center. Mr. Hagenau spoke about his travels with students, and alumni and faculty had a great chance to catch up.

Alumni Events KCD hosts reception for KMI alumni Over 200 KMI alumni and guests re-

united in Kentucky for a weekend reunion that included a reception in the KCD Theater lobby on June 9, 2011.

At KCD, alumni enjoyed a tour of the KCD campus and of the Kentucky Military Institute memorabilia on display in the Frazier Upper School. Bill Vermillion ’63 reports that the reception got things off to a great start. “Everybody involved with it was just spectacular,” he said. “It was probably one of the better receptions we’ve had in Louisville.”

On Friday morning, alumni visited the old campus, which is now Brook Hospital. Alumni were greeted by the familiar sight of the old WW II cannon at the main entrance; according to Bill, over the years this cannon was painted every color of the rainbow! Friday afternoon and evening, alumni enjoyed a lunch cruise on the Belle of Louisville and music by The Monarchs at the hotel in the evening.

The reunion wrapped up on Saturday with an afternoon at the races at Churchill Downs and a closing banquet at the hotel in the evening.

Alumni Events Rain can’t dampen sold out Golf Outing Despite rainy weather, the 2012 KCD Golf Outing was the best attended event to date, with 100 golfers and 25 teams taking the course at Standard Country Club on June 4, 2012.

Alumni Events KCD hosts fall Alumni Reception Last October, KCD alumni gath-

ered in the Theater Lobby for an Alumni Reception prior to the football game.

Many members of the classes of 1986 and 2001 were in attendance as they celebrated their 10th and 25th reunions that weekend.

Introducing the

kentucky home school archive project

At the 2012 KHS Luncheon at 211 Clover Lane, Sharon Receveur ’63 introduced the KHS Archive Project. The goal of the project is to collect and archive memorabilia from the Kentucky Home School for Girls and to display it in some fashion at KCD. KHS is a rich part of KCD history, and we believe it should be preserved and shared with the KCD community now and in the future.

The Archive Project has seed money that was raised at the KHS Luncheon, and we are using that to get started in processing the archive materials that KCD already has in its possession. The project will take on many shapes and forms over the next few months, and we will need the help of KHS alumnae to make it a success. We will need help in capturing items and memories from textbooks and photo albums to athletic sweaters and May Day gowns.

Friday, October 12 All Alumni BBQ Cookout and Football Game, 6:00 – 9:30 The cookout begins at 6:00, and the football game vs. Bethlehem begins at 7:30. Alumni and their families will receive free entry into the game and free dinner from the Booster Club.

Saturday, October 13 5K Fun Run/Walk at KCD, 8:00 am Join us for a casual run/walk on the KCD Campus. There is a $10 entry fee; t-shirt and drinks will be provided to all registered participants.

KCD Workout, 8:00 – 11:00 am Take advantage of KCD’s new weight room and get some additional assistance from the KCD strength coach Ed Long. The weight room will be open from 8– 11:00 am.

Alumni Family Picnic, 11:00 am – 2:00 pm Bring the family and a picnic lunch and join us for a picnic at the KCD playground. Bring your own meal, but the Alumni Association will provide a bounce house, giant slide, balloon artist, drinks, and Graeter’s ice cream.

KCD Golf at Nevel Meade Golf Course, 2:00 pm To reserve a foursome at Nevel Meade Golf Course for 18 holes and a cart for only $46, please go to www.nevelmeade.com. Spots will be available for KCD starting on October 1, 2013. Reservations must be made online for the $46 price.
