Our Mission

The mission of the AAO Foundation is to advance the orthodontic specialty by supporting quality education and research that leads to excellence in patient care, and by promoting orthodontic charitable giving.

2 | YEAR IN REVIEW 2021

2021-2022 AAOF BOARD OF DIRECTORS LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT:

I am delighted to report the AAOF had a remarkably creative and constructive year in 2021. Among many other priorities, the focus remained fundraising. Our frequently circulated communications and messages made a difference. Many donors were inspired to donate.

Most notably, we were pleased by Align Technology’s commitment to better the future of orthodontics with a $1 million pledge. It will affect the potential for AAOF for several years to come.

Also significant is the generosity of the Graber Family Foundation. They are steadfast in their giving contributions. We were proud to present them with the 2021 Eugene and Pauline Blair Distinguished Service Award. The Foundation hopes all orthodontists, one day, will want to be the like the Graber family, and help to secure their future in comfort and abundance.

Our Awards Program continues to support quality education and research and this year alone granted over $750,000 to worthy applicants to support their projects. Also, a new Orthodontic Faculty Development Fellowship Award (OFDFA) was established and named in honor of Dr. James Vaden in 2021. Over the years, many scientists will benefit from it to advance the science and technology of orthodontics.

The Foundation continued its support for the GORP meeting, which was held in person for residents, in St. Louis, Missouri. The residents were able to physically visit and explore the Association that serves them. The Foundation will also continue to sponsor residents to attend the AAO Annual Session in Miami in 2022 through the Dr. Fred A. Garrett Resident Education Program.

Throughout the year, the AAO was intimately involved with the Foundation with their wisdom, support, eagerness, and help. Those who are in leadership for AAO deserve our gratitude.

As gratitude goes, the Foundation now houses two very important entities: Donated Orthodontic Services (DOS) and the Disaster Relief program. Hurricane “IDA” created much havoc in the practices of several orthodontists, to which the Foundation provided funds to help repair the damages.

A significant leader in orthodontics and former Chair of PARC, Dr. Laura Iwasaki, received the 2021 Louise and Joseph Jarabak Award for her distinguished contributions to education and science in orthodontics. On her watch, the quality of science and clinical orthodontic research has risen to make a difference. We congratulate her, as we are very grateful to her.

If you want to further your commitment to the AAOF, join me and the AAOF Board of Directors by joining the century club. A monthly contribution is the easiest and least burdensome means to make a donation: https://www.aaofoundation.net/ways-to-give/join-century-club--monthly-giving

While keeping the ultimate fiduciary responsibility of the Awards Program, the Foundation Board has delegated to the Planning and Awards Review Committee (PARC) the responsibility of reviewing the various applications and recommending which are to be funded. In addition, the committee is responsible for making recommendations about any alterations in the Foundation’s Awards Program. PARC is composed of nine voting members and one nonvoting member: Voting members of PARC are selected by the AAOF Board of Directors from recommendations originating from the AAO Board of Trustees; through the AAO Council on Education (COE) and AAO Council on Scientific Affairs (COSA), PARC and from the AAOF Board itself. Individuals recommended by either council and nominated by the AAO BOT need not be members of either council. Typically, PARC members serve a maximum of two three-year terms. The Chair and Vice Chair of PARC are both determined by the AAOF BOD. The member of PARC, who is designated the AAOF Board Liaison to PARC, is selected by the AAOF BOD from among Foundation Directors.

2021 Graber Family Biomedical Research and Teaching Award

The Application of Low-Intensity Pulsed Ultrasound (LIPUS) in Dentofacial Deformity In the United States, it is estimated that 5% of the population (16.5 million) present with moderate-severe dentofacial deformities that require surgical intervention of the hard and, occasionally, the soft tissues to restore dentofacial balance and function. The estimated cost of combined orthodontic treatment and orthognathic surgery ranges from $20,000-$40,000 per case. Possible complications of surgery include nerve damage, infection, relapse, and poor aesthetic and functional outcomes; the associated financial burden amounts to millions of dollars. There is a need to develop therapies for the prevention of dentofacial deformity and, in the case of corrective procedures, improve outcomes in all cases. Our long-term goal is to develop innovative therapies for dentofacial deformities.

The evidence suggests a role of the masticatory muscles in dentofacial deformity. There is an urgent need to better understand this role in order to identify potential preventative interventions. In addition, understanding factors that promote muscle adaptation and regeneration are of relevance to stability and faster recovery following surgical correction.

“I am grateful to the Foundation for the award of this funding. The generation of preliminary data from this project funded by the Foundation will support future funding applications to the NIH/NIDCR. As a tenuretrack Assistant Professor, the award of research funding from institutions, such as the NIH/NIDCR, will be important for advancing my career as a clinician scientisteducator in the field of orthodontics.”

University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill

Low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) has been demonstrated as a noninvasive physical stimulus for numerous therapeutic applications. An extensive literature search has revealed the absence of studies on the effects of LIPUS on the craniofacial skeletal musculature. We propose to study the role of LIPUS in skeletal muscle regeneration and adaptation in vitro, and understand its potential as a therapeutic agent in dentofacial deformity. Our hypothesis is that successful and faster skeletal muscle regeneration and adaptation is dependent on the application of LIPUS. The following specific aims will answer our hypothesis: Aim 1 - Modification of our current tissue bioreactors and optimization of LIPUS parameters; Aim 2 - Investigation into the in vitro effects of LIPUS on skeletal muscle regeneration and adaptation.

Benefit to Orthodontic Education

Orthodontists have in-depth knowledge of growth and development of the dentofacial complex. Studies have demonstrated the role of the muscles of mastication in dentofacial deformity. Our proposal to investigate the effects of LIPUS on craniofacial skeletal muscle is timely, novel and innovative. There is the potential to generate new knowledge on the effects of LIPUS on the soft tissues of the dentofacial region, and how this may be utilized in the development of future therapies for our patients.

“ The funding provided by the American Association of Orthodontists Foundation is essential for the recruitment of subjects for the follow-up survey. Support by the AAOF will also be crucial in the development and further exploration of my research interests. My quest for knowledge, understanding, and answers will be applicable to a future career in academic and clinical practice.”

2021 Charles J. Burstone Research Aid Award

Globally, the COVID-19 pandemic has led to major increase in unemployment and has downstream effects on poverty, food insecurity and poor health outcomes. The objective of the proposed study is to conduct a survey to comprehend how COVID-19 and the related economic recession are impacting people’s diets and oral health.

The survey consists of three parts. The first part address questions about themselves. The second part questions about experience from pre- and post- the initiation of the pandemic in the US. A follow up questionnaire will be given to orthodontic patients. The follow up survey will focus on accessibility of orthodontic care, economic barriers to proceed with the already started orthodontic treatment and also the ability to maintain oral hygiene and healthy diet while during orthodontic care in the midst of this pandemic.

The result from the proposed study will shed a light on the drastic increase in food insecurity and economic instability in the United States as a result of COVID-19 pandemic.

ABOUT THE COLLECTION

With support from the American Association of Orthodontists Foundation (AAOF), nine of the eleven known collections of longitudinal craniofacial growth records in the United States and Canada have joined together to create this web site and its underlying numerical database. Our purpose is to make representative materials from the participating collections available for viewing and further investigation by clinicians, craniofacial investigators, students of human growth, and interested members of the public. These collections represent the work of hundreds of investigators. They have been gathered, cataloged, and studied over a period of more than seventy-five years. The contributing collections have produced most of the information that is available in the contemporary orthodontic literature on longitudinal craniofacial growth in untreated children. Now, by merging data

from the several collections, we hope to make possible further collaborative studies that will enrich and refine our knowledge of craniofacial growth in untreated children and adolescents.

Presently available on the site are more than 13,000 digital images including 8,700 lateral cephalograms and over 3,000 frontal (PA) cephalograms generated at different ages from 704 cases, gathered from 9 different collections. Summary statistics on case distribution by sex/ gender, age and Angle Class may be found by clicking on “ Statistics” in the About menu.

This entire site is a continually developing resource for orthodontic teaching and research. Its primary role is to serve as a repository for longitudinal records of all types with sufficient numerical documentation to facilitate useful search and querying.

GRATEFUL PATIENTS

MAKE A Difference

Did you know, when you have a patient whose life is made better because of your commitment to their orthodontic health, you can encourage them to give to AAOF in your honor through our Grateful Patient Program? Not only do they receive the tax deduction for their donation, but you receive the credit with AAOF for that donation, which will advance you in our giving level benefits and recognition. With donations like these, AAOF can continue funding research and education that will lead to increased excellence in patient care in the future.

For more information about this program, and a printable form to offer your patients, visit www.aaofoundation.net/ways-to-give and select Grateful Patient Form.

“I decided to make a pledge to AAOF as a resident and become a member of the Vanguard Society because I want to show my fellow residents that I care about the future of our specialty. It may seem daunting, making a pledge for the future, however this is my way of showing that I have hope for the future, I believe in our specialty, and I want it to stay strong for not only my own benefit, but for my peers and all future orthodontists.”

DISASTER RELIEF PROGRAM

WHAT IS THE DISASTER RELIEF FUND?

Any AAO member who is the victim of a natural disaster may apply to the AAO Disaster Relief Fund for a grant (up to $5,000) to assist in restoring, repairing, or reconstructing a practice facility owned by the applicant, or the dental equipment and supplies therein.

WHY CONTRIBUTE TO THIS FUND?

Damages from a natural disaster can create a serious financial hardship and sometimes other sources of adequate funding are not available. Replacement of lost income from practice interruption is not an eligible reason for assistance.

WHO WE SERVE

Applicants must meet the requirements prescribed in the Rules for the Disaster Assistance Program and applicants should read the Rules prior to completing this application. Find the rules here: https://www.aaoinfo.org/node/6553

“I donate to AAOF so when disaster strikes there is a relief fund to help orthodontists out.”

DR. RAYMOND GEORGE, SR. AWARD FOR OUTSTANDING DONATED ORTHODONTIC SERVICE

Donated Orthodontic Services (DOS) is proud to announce that we now have another way to honor and celebrate our amazing volunteers, the Raymond George, Sr. Award for Outstanding DOS Service. The Raymond George, Sr. Award for Outstanding DOS Service is a tribute to Dr. Raymond George, Sr. who is remembered fondly not only for his kindness, but his initiative and drive for implementing the Donated Orthodontic Services program to serve children that lack access to care. The Raymond George, Sr. Award for Outstanding DOS Service was created to honor individuals who have contributed significantly to the expansion of the DOS program and have contributed to the program’s success by treating DOS patients.

The DOS committee is pleased to announce that Dr. Michael Durbin was chosen as the first-ever honoree. Dr. Durbin was instrumental in launching the DOS program in the state of Illinois and continues to be a strong champion for Donated Orthodontic Services. Dr. Durbin’s ongoing leadership and support is inspiring. He will be awarded the Raymond George, Sr. Award for Outstanding DOS Service at the 2022 Annual Session in Miami.

ONE PLACE, MORE OPPORTUNITIES

Along with a new mission, the American Association of Orthodontists Foundation is now offering more opportunities for AAO members to get involved. The AAOF recently welcomed the Donated Orthodontic Services (DOS) program and the Disaster Relief Fund (DRF) to its philanthropic umbrella so members can engage on multiple levels, all in one place.

OUR MISSION

The mission of the AAO Foundation is to advance the orthodontic specialty by supporting quality education and research that leads to excellence in patient care, and by promoting orthodontic charitable giving.

The AAOF’s passion for education and research, will always be at the forefront of what it does. Expanding the mission statement and gaining two dynamic programs truly gives the Foundation new ways to move the specialty forward. Both programs, DOS and the Disaster Relief Fund will bring diversification to the Foundation by adding volunteerism and a way to directly support our members, especially after a natural disaster.
