The mission of the AAO Foundation is to advance the orthodontic specialty by supporting quality education and research that leads to excellence in patient care, and by promoting orthodontic charitable giving.
LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT: The AAO Foundation weathered the pandemic of 2020 and its shutdowns remarkably well. We did not skip a beat to implement new initiatives, make progress with existing projects–and collaborate intimately with the AAO. For the past 27 years, the Foundation had raised funds to sponsor the research projects of orthodontic faculty; and recently, supports the residents’ attendance to the AAO Annual Sessions. The AAO Foundation organizes the “Business of Orthodontics” lecture series. Attendance is huge as are the reviews. In 2020, the Rapid Assessment of Evidence (RAE) initiative bore fruit with two reports published in the AJO-DO. (Dental Monitoring and Accelerated Teeth Movement). These assessments were requested by the AAO members, and investigations conducted by the select PARC members. Any member can request an inquiry. Also in 2020, AAO handed to AAOF, the administrative and fundraising activities for members’ Disaster Relief Fund (DRF) and Donated Orthodontic Services (DOS) services.

Aside from managing an active NIH-funded research portfolio in stem cell biology and epigenetics, my passion lies in translational research addressing clinical challenges in orthodontics and craniofacial care. Only with the previous awards from the AAOF, was I able to pursue my dream and establish a productive research enterprise, bridging basic science with clinical knowledge. To this end, I was able to establish four animal models for orthodontic translational research that focus on the modulation of tooth movement and tooth eruption as well as the stability of palatal expansion and bone grafts in craniofacial patients. The knowledge gained from these AAOF-funded studies will be instrumental to future innovations in orthodontics. -CHRISTINE HONG, DDS. While keeping the ultimate fiduciary responsibility of the Awards Program, the Foundation Board has delegated to the Planning and Awards Review Committee (PARC) the responsibility of reviewing the various applications and recommending which are to be funded. In addition, the committee is responsible for making recommendations about any alterations in the Foundation’s Awards Program. PARC is composed of nine voting members and one nonvoting member: Voting members of PARC are selected by the AAOF Board of Directors from recommendations originating from the AAO Board of Trustees; through the AAO Council on Education (COE) and AAO Council on Scientific Affairs (COSA), PARC and from the AAOF Board itself. Individuals recommended by either council and nominated by the AAO BOT need not be members of either council. Typically, PARC members serve a maximum of two three-year terms. The Chair and Vice Chair of PARC are both determined by the AAOF BOD. The member of PARC, who is designated the AAOF Board Liaison to PARC, is selected by the AAOF BOD from among Foundation Directors.

AWARD 2019 Graber Family Biomedical Research and Teaching Award
The support of the AAOF in the form of this Biomedical Research Award is fundamental to the initiation of this project, and funds will be used to purchase the necessary supplies and support the appointment of a part-time clinical research coordinator to facilitate patient recruitment, informed consent and data collection throughout the trial. This past year I was promoted to Associate Professor and awarded tenure at UBC, an accomplishment in which support from the AAOF played a vital role. Orthodontic treatment frequently aims to achieve ideal occlusal function and optimal facial esthetics, and in certain instances these goals are met through retraction of the anterior teeth and a reduction of the perimeter of the dental arches. While this is often facilitated by dental extractions, the exact indications and necessity of removing permanent teeth have long been debated in orthodontics. More recently, discussion on the supposed restrictive effects of dental extractions has shifted to focus on the upper airway and the possible associations with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).Previously, the effects of dental extractions have been examined with traditional 2D and 3D imaging techniques, and taken together, the literature demonstrates that orthodontic treatment with dental extractions does not routinely result in reduction in the volume or shape of the upper airway. While informative, the significant limitation in this existing literature is that it has focused entirely on airway dimensions, instead of the more OSArelevant airway function. By directly assessing airway function, this project will serve to provide information vital to the evidence-based practice of orthodontics as it relates to obstructive sleep disorders, and develop a validated protocol for future studies involving more diverse patient populations. This project proposes, through the development of a novel protocol and a prospective single-blinded randomized controlled cross-over trial, to study how breathing during sleep is effected by constriction of the dental arches. To achieve this goal, a cohort of healthy adults will have their respiratory function assessed during sleep in random order, both with and without an oral appliance which simulates significant arch constriction. Level III at-home polysomnography will be employed, and any measured changes in respiratory function will be related to anthropometric and dentofacial characteristics. “ Our previous AAOF support led to the work now funded by NIDCR R01 award on ‘Integrative Predictors of Temporomandibular Joint Osteoarthritis.’ We have integrated quantitative markers for diagnosis and assessment of progression of TMJ OA, as well as extended the capabilities of 3D Slicer4 into web-based tools and disseminated open source image analysis tools.”
Two main challenges of computer aided, clinical decision support systems are 1) achieving similar levels of accuracy as clinicians in a fully-automated fashion and 2) designing holistic approaches to identify subsets of patients’ biomarkers which are most predictive of patients’ outcomes or health status. The goal of this proposal is to tackle these challenges by designing novel robust computational techniques, including machine learning and image processing methods, for a clinical decision support system for diagnosis and prediction of progression of osteoarthritis (OA) of the Temporomandibular (TMJ). This application proposes the development of efficient Data Science approaches for data processing and analytics of clinical, biological, and high dimensional imaging data from TMJ OA patients. The Data Science approaches in this AAOF BRA proposal will scale up our previous integrative indicators of TMJ OA, bringing in a cutting-edge clinical Decision Support System and providing preliminary work for a future U01 multicenter submission. Just a few years ago, I was beginning my career, not as an orthodontist since I had 24 years in the U.S. Army as an orthodontist, but as an orthodontic educator. I received a faculty development grant from the AAOF which provided me the necessary financial support to assist on research projects and continuing education opportunities. Because I received support from the AAOF to “jump start” my academic career and have had colleagues who have received AAOF support, and now my residents are receiving AAOF support, I expect my graduating orthodontic residents to give back to the AAOF as well as to their program. All donors play an enormous role in allowing the AAOF to make this huge impact in developing new orthodontic faculty and supporting our residents. I am very grateful to the AAOF for my financial support as it is a huge service to our profession in research and education. Our orthodontic programs are constantly exceeding expectations and setting new standards in orthodontics due to the AAOF support. ABOUT THE COLLECTION With support from the American Association of Orthodontists Foundation (AAOF), nine of the eleven known collections of longitudinal craniofacial growth records in the United States and Canada have joined together to create this web site and its underlying numerical database. Our purpose is to make representative materials from the participating collections available for viewing and further investigation by clinicians, craniofacial investigators, students of human growth, and interested members of the public. These collections represent the work of hundreds of investigators. They have been gathered, cataloged, and studied over a period of more than seventy-five years. The contributing collections have produced most of the information that is available in the contemporary orthodontic literature on longitudinal craniofacial growth in untreated children. Now, by merging data from
the several collections, we hope to make possible further collaborative studies that will enrich and refine our knowledge of craniofacial growth in untreated children and adolescents. Presently available on the site are more than 13,000 digital images including 8700 lateral cephalograms and over 3000 frontal (PA) cephalograms generated at different ages from 704 cases, gathered from 9 different Collections. Summary statistics on case distribution by sex/ gender, age and Angle Class may be found by clicking on “ Statistics” in the About menu. This entire site is a continually developing resource for orthodontic teaching and research. Its primary role is to serve as a repository for longitudinal records of all types with sufficient numerical documentation to facilitate useful search and querying.

On July 28, 2020, Robert Hazel passed away after fighting a courageous battle with cancer. Robert retired in May 2018 as Executive Vice President of the AAO Foundation. In this capacity he served the Foundation for 26 years. He developed the pledging opportunities designed to build a strong financial basis for the AAO’s charitable arm. ONE PLACE, MORE OPPORTUNITIES Along with a new mission, the American Association of Orthodontists Foundation is now offering more opportunities for AAO members to get involved. The AAOF recently welcomed the Donated Orthodontic Services (DOS) program and the Disaster Relief Fund (DRF) to its philanthropic umbrella so members can engage on multiple levels, all in one place.
OUR MISSION The AAO Foundation is to advance the orthodontic specialty by supporting quality education and research that leads to excellence in patient care, and by promoting orthodontic charitable giving. The AAOF’s passion for education and research, will always be at the forefront of what it does. Expanding the mission statement and gaining two dynamic programs truly gives the Foundation new ways to move the specialty forward.
