"Don't let your anxiety or fear of new situations stop you from going out. Live your life to the fullest while you're here."
HOMETOWN: Chatsworth, Georgia
OCCUPATION: Server Operations Technician 673rd Communications Squadron
PEOPLE OF JBER
by Debbie M.
Henry Reyes
From Chatsworth, Georgia, to Anchorage, Alaska, Henry Reyes is a Server Operations Technician working for the 673rd Communications Squadron. One of his primary duties is maintaining most of the servers on base. Henry has been with us at JBER since July 2022 after requesting Alaska as his first duty station. He shared with a laugh. "When we got our first assignment after tech school, I remember asking my roommate to check for me because I was too nervous to look. He got Hawaii, and I got Alaska— definitely polar opposites!"
When asked about the most remarkable thing about his job, Henry answers without hesitation, "Being able to work on so many important things behind the scenes that keep our networks running and secure," we all thank you for it.
Life at JBER has been a positive experience for him. He appreciates the supportive leadership that encourages airmen and soldiers to explore Alaska's natural beauty. "They don't shy away from how tough it can be to live here and sponsor resources to help incoming airmen," Henry noted. He also praised the dorm leadership for their attentiveness and the activities they organized, especially during the long winter months.
When it comes to his favorite activities on base, he stated his love for Otter Lake, mainly to go there in the summer to grill or kayak and enjoy the peacefulness of Eagleglen Trail. Outside of work, he is passionate about water sports like whitewater rafting and kayaking during the summer. In the winter, he finds joy in reading and building Gundams.
A highlight of his time at JBER has been his involvement with the Outdoor Adventure Program (OAP). "My first weekend in Alaska, I went whitewater rafting with an outside company and loved it," he recalled. "When I found out we had a place on base that offered similar activities, I immediately signed up for the next trip available." Henry spoke highly of the guides, Connor, Chance, and Tim, who made him feel safe and comfortable during his first rafting experience.
"I recommend OAP trips to every new airman I meet," he said, proudly sharing that he has sponsored office events through the UNITE program.
Besides his love for the job and all the fantastic things OAP has to offer, he is a devoted Las Vegas Raiders fan. Even though their performance has not been the best, he admits to remaining loyal to the team.
His favorite song is "Delta Dawn" by Tanya Tucker, which reflects his spirit— easygoing yet deeply passionate. Like the song, Henry has learned to embrace adventure, and stepping outside one's comfort zone leads to personal growth and creates lasting memories. Whether exploring the wilderness of Alaska or simply trying something new, Henry's journey reminds us that the rewards of courage always outweigh the fears that hold us back.
