By James Thomas Sr. A mass mailer sent out by Carson City Clerk Jim Dear implying Carson would lose the proposed NFL stadium if he was recalled was filled with untrue statements according to the Carson City Attorney at the recent city council meeting.

Carson resident Ramona Pimentel stated during oral comments that she received the mailer and mailed a letter to City Hall seeking to verify the validity of the statements, “I am here tonight to get answers to the statements made on this mailer” Ramona said (see mailer on pg 11)

The Carson Courier However: if that voice is to be heard the residents must not be passive and quiet when it comes to their community.

I was stopped several times in the last week by concerned residents voicing their opinion about things happening in Carson.

I politely told each of them “If you write a letter to the Editor, I can personally guarantee it will be published in the Carson Courier.

To my surprise each of them had an “excuse” why they couldn’t write a letter to the Editor. The most common response “I don’t want my name in the paper.”

The Carson Courier is committed to being the voice of “all” Carson residents, but if only a few residents are concerned enough to allow their voice to be heard, the message coming from the community newspaper may seem biased.

Each edition of The Carson Courier has truly been enjoyable. I actually read every article once the paper comes out. I am learning and taking the advice that applies to me.

This week I read one of our Junior Reporter article about finding a book that makes you want to read. I found a book that made we want to read entitled, We Shall Overcome Sacred Song On The Devil’s Tongue.

The book is about Louise Shropshire the true writer of We Shall Overcome.

The book proves her authorship and shares her involvement in the Civil Rights Movement.

As a journalist, I was extremely excited because I love when truth is uncovered.

It’s not always comfortable when you uncover important information that challenges what people have accepted as truth. People often want to “kill the messenger” but it is the responsibility of journalist to objectively tell a story.

I had the opportunity of talking to Mrs. Shropshire’s grandson, Robert Shropshire, who was the catalyst for the book. It is amazing how so many writers material was stolen because of their ignorance to copyright laws.

Many song writers were just writing because of their love for music and singing in church or at a club was an outlet. They had no idea that people were preying on them, taking their songs, changing a word here and there and then making money off of them.

Who Do They Serve?

The L.A. Times article on Sunday 9/7/15 stated, that the District Attorney’s Office would be conducting a “non-resident” complaint investigation that involves Mayor Robles.

If you recall former Mayor Dear “knowingly” supported Mr. Robles for the Carson City Council seat.

In 2013 we filed a non-resident compliant status, which involved former council member Robles, but the D.A.’s office refused to investigate.

Also, it’s truly ironic, in 2005 a “non-resident” and a Felony California Election Code sections 2021, 18560 and 18561 (Assisting, aiding and abetting) violation complaint was filed against former candidate Lina Phillips for the Carson City Council seat and former Mayor Jim Dear. The L.A. D.A.’s office not only refused to prosecute the above violations, while receiving ample evidence on the matter, but they still refused to conduct a proper investigation, into the non-resident and Ca. Election Code complaint.

It’s Sad and Inexcusable, when these serious offenses are not prosecuted, they only encourage more corruption.

Now, the D.A.’s office has decided to conduct a non-resident investigation against Mayor Robles, which have been filed by a non-resident entity (Oxy Oil Co.) and possibly others that have no invested interest in our community.

Finally, after the residents have filed numerous of valid complaints to the D.A.’s office of wrong doing and corruption by Carson’s elected official(s), and the D.A. never took any appropriate action.

Now they choose to investigate a non-resident complaint, from a non-resident, so who do they serve?

by Jewel Diamond Taylor Now even though this biopic film was full of chaos, embezzlement, violence, creativity, pop culture exploding, racist encounters with the police, voices of rebellion, protests, a quick rise to fame and fortune...I saw internal stories of the do’s and don’ts when it comes to friendship, leadership and entrepreneurship.

Every movie I watch on the big screen, my ipad or on my TV…I look for a pearl of wisdom. I wait for the aha moment that speaks to my life or something I can use in my keynote speeches or one-on-one coaching. I wait for the words to jump off the screen that will give me a shot of inspiration, give me clarity, or boost my faith.

It’s interesting that I got my recent pearl of wisdom when I watched F. Gary Gray’s biopic controversial and brutally honest depiction of life in Compton and Southern Los Angeles…“Straight Outta Compton.”

Before moving to Carson, I was raised and educated in Compton attending Compton College, Compton High, Vanguard and El Segundo Elementary now renamed Dr. Ronald E. McNair Elementary.

To see a piece of Compton history, good or bad, was something I wanted to experience.

I was curious.

The film was released on August 14, 2015, received positive reviews from critics, and has grossed over $168 million. An album inspired by the film, Compton, was released by Dr. Dre on August 7, 2015, and debuted at No. 2 on the US Billboard 200 charts.

I have no idea how factual the depiction of the money, media and messy business deals.

But there were definitely some gems that sparkled and caught my eye. There were definitely some pearls of wisdom to make me say…”Oh yes! That is true in more than just the music business!”

One of my takeaways from the movie was how they were warned that ego, expectations and excess can cause their empire to crumble. These same three (3) poisons can destroy a family, your business, your credit, your ministry, and your character.

I am certainly not a qualified movie critic. I simply chose to find the diamonds in the dialogue. I am inspired to remember the cautionary tale of avoiding the The 3 “E”s of destruction…ego, expectations and excess.

I invite you to see if any area of your life is on a path of destruction because of your large ego, having unrealistic expectations and too much excess in your life? By Angela Jackson Recently, I had the opportunity to give back to our seniors. As I worked with this amazing lady with Alzheimer’s it made me reflect on how we care for our seniors. Often we neglect those who once made us a priority because this country does not value our elders as we should.

Most of us don’t plan to take care of the elders in our family. One day it hits us and all of the sudden our parents, grandparents, and other elder’s in our family can appear to be a burden. In this country we leave it up to our seniors to have a plan for their later years rather than approaching it as a family matter.

In as much as we need to plan for our children’s future we need to have a plan to care for our parents and those elders in our lives who have sup-

ported us. I strongly believe that we should keep seniors at home as long as it is what’s best for their health. There is a good company called Home Instead which specializes in assisting families so their loved ones can remain at home. If you have a loved one who is unable to completely care for him/herself consider looking into this company and others like it.

When it’s time for more specialized care finding a good Senior Living facility can be hairy. There are many factors that one must ponder. Perhaps the most important factor is will your loved one be cared for adequately and is it a place that is full of life and love rather than a clinical environment which can appear cold.

I personally like smaller facilities where I can actually talk to the owner and find out his/her

value system, after all my loved one will be living in their facility and be in their care. I know of one such home in Los Angeles which is owned by a Christian family appropriately called, A Family Touch Senior Living. They can be reached at 310-4222561.

As we age, it is important to plan for our later years. Yes we should have life insurance and have our burial taken care of so we are not a burden but these plans should not be made independent of our loved ones since someone will need to be there when our body slows down and what we once were able to do easily is more challenging.

Those that are blessed to live to see those days are certainly not a burden and should never feel that way.

“Sexing Over 60 Is it Taboo?”

A Nurse’s Perspective for Sexual Healing Hello Carson Courier Readers!

Today is a great day to be great!

This week’s column is only for the mature audience but in no way promotes fornication, adultery or sexual promiscuity. I decided to focus on “sexing” over 60 for this week’s column.

By Dean L. Jones It was a grim situation at the start of 2015 when a HaitianAmerican man became separated from his chaperone at an international airport in New York City.

For the reason that this man, at 51 years of age, was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and his offspring decided it was best for him to move back to his native Haiti to be cared for by close relatives.

Unfortunately, one way or another his difficulty in remembering made it possible for him to wander off before boarding the plane, until being found alive by local police three days later, some multiple miles from his original airport location.

It was not too long ago where Alzheimer's and dementia were associated with the extreme aging population, but an estimated 5.4 million Americans have Alzheimer's and strikingly people less than 65 years of age account for 10% of Early-onset Alzheimer's disease cases.

This means that one in nine seniors over the age of 65 has Alzheimer's, and the disease is now thought to

be the 3rd leading cause of death in the USA, right behind heart disease and cancer.

This is why a lot of people are persistently asking how to prevent or at least slow memory lost and the other associated symptoms of dementia.

Five years ago the Alzheimer's disease was cautiously dubbed "type 3 diabetes" when researchers discovered that in addition to our pancreas organ, the brain also produces insulin, and this brain insulin is necessary for the survival of brain cells.

Insulin in the brain helps with neuron glucoseuptake and the regulation of neurotransmitters that are crucial for memory and learning.

Aside from exercise, science is reporting to avoid toxic foodstuff that limits the development of memory loss.

That is because consuming too many complex carbohydrates, processed foods and added sugars set into motion inflammation and an upsurge of plaques in the brain.

Subsequently, toxins impair mental abilities that apply to people of all ages, not just seniors.

In the common American diet there is an overload of poor foodstuff items that hamper cognitive brain functions. Such as white breads, white sugar, white rice, pasta, cheeses (American, mozzarella sticks, including Cheez Whiz, and Laughing Cow, to name a few), processed and smoked meats have all been linked to Alzheimer’s disease from spiking insulin production and sending toxins to the brain.

This goes toward one reason why people living with type 2 diabetes that get up in age frequently lose more brain gray matter than others, by this means adding to a contributing factor for acquiring dementia.

According to the dictionary, sexing is defined as, “the instinct or attraction drawing one sex toward another, or its manifestation in life and conduct.”

Many believe that having sex over 60 is taboo or a forbidden act. However, having sex over 60 is beneficial to improve overall health!

The other day I came across a news report that showed an 87-year-old man in Michigan soliciting sex.

Most people just assume older people don't have sex, which is why this story is so unusual. But the truth is that statistics indicate that many elderly people engage in sex on a regular basis. In 2010, the Carson Community census revealed that 10.7% of residents were comprised of individuals over 65 years old and 55.7% were married couples living in the same household, so I believe that sexual health is very relevant to this distinct population and a popular topic!

The Benefits of Having Sex Over 60 I have consulted many patients that feel that having sex over 60 is not a crucial part of improving overall health and who do not understand the benefits.

There are many benefits of practicing sex after the age of 60. One misunderstanding about having sex during this age is that individuals are at risk for heart attack or stroke. Heart attack or stroke can happen at any age if blood pressure is not managed properly. It is important to seek your physician’s advice to ensure that your blood pressure is under control and request that your physician perform an EKG (electrocardiogram) to make sure that your heart is fit for sexual activity. Ironically, studies indicate that having sex two to three times per week reduces the risk of heart attack and lowers blood pressure. Other benefits include: reduces weight, improves (HDL) cholesterol level; the good cholesterol, burns calories, boosts the immune system, improves sleep, reduces stress, helps with pain management and improves self esteem!

The “Blue Pill”

I’m sure you’ve heard the term “the little blue pill." Viagra is the common name for this drug (it is also known as Sildenafil.) The purpose of Viagra is to help with erectile dysfunction, impotence and pulmonary arterial hypertension. Viagra works by relaxing arterial wall smooth muscles in the lungs and penis. This function causes “vasodilatation.” In other words, Viagra causes the blood vessels to widen (dilatation), which causes the blood flow to the penis to increase-the ultimate result (being penile erection.)

No one should start or continue this drug without the direct consent from your physician!

It is imperative that a comprehensive physical examination and regular check-ups be maintained while taking this drug. Taking Nitrates and Viagra is like mixing gasoline and fire together. DO NOT MIX! Nitrates are used to prevent chest pain and angina. Common nitrates are Nitroglycerin and Isordil. One interesting fact is that women are catching on to taking Viagra and some physicians are prescribing Viagra for women. There are other natural recommendations for women, which I will discuss in the next issue. Most importantly, please consult your physician to find out if this is an option for you.

Sexual health is important at any age but having sex over the age of 60 can enhance and improve healthy living. This concludes Part One of “Sexing Over 60.” I hope that this issue has helped to make you more informed about sexual health. Stay tuned for Part Two in the next issue with Nurse Mona!

By Doris Molo Know that the LORD Himself is God; it is He who has made us, and not we ourselves; we are His people and the Sheep of His pasture. (Psalms 100:3) I heard a thought provoking sermon concerning "Goats and Sheep" and the attributes of each.

This peaked my interest in sheep, so I decided to do some research on these animals that Jesus likened to His followers.

My research was disheartening: A sheep is a prey animal, not an animal of prey; they have no definitive defense mechanism; they are basically food.

Sheep do three things well: they flock, they run, they run in a flock (that might actually be two things). That's all they got. They do not growl, hiss, bite, spit at you, stare you down, and if they puff up, we will never know as they are already rather "puffy" to begin with.

A gnat can bite and a bee can sting, but a sheep runs. I have seen a chicken play a toy piano, a pig

can do some stuff (remember Arnold?) but a sheep just stands there. Oh, and another thing, they get lost easily.

In all fairness, Sheep can follow their Shepherd, their protector, their overseer, the one who leads them to sustenance. They depend on and trust their Master. They recognize His voice and come when He calls them by name.

The Shepherd knows His flock.

Jesus Christ is referred to as "The Good Shepherd" and His followers are His "Flock". Do we come when He calls us? Do we let him "Lead us not into temptation and deliver us from evil"? (Matt.

6:13). Do we partake of the sustenance of His Word; the very essence of our spiritual growth?

When we do not stay close to the Shepherd, we get "lost" in this mad, mad world. I admit, without the Shepherd, I am defenseless.

A sheep’s strongest asset is total awareness. They know they are in danger without their Shepherd. (Another positive: They are absolutely adorable.)

The process of applying for and maintaining payments on a mortgage can be complex — primarily because of what happens behind the scenes. To make it even more confusing, the company that originally lent you the money to buy your new home will likely sell your mortgage in the secondary mortgage market to an investor.

What’s the secondary mortgage market?

This is where investors — such as Freddie Mac, Fannie Mae, pension funds, hedge funds, other mortgage companies, and banks, for example — purchase assets or loans, including mortgages, as well as the bonds that finance these assets.

While lenders tend to hold high-balance loans in their portfolio, they usually sell most mortgages because that’s the easiest way a lender can generate

Investors like snapping up mortgages because they’re backed by a tangible asset that you can see and touch, and that builds value over time — your home. Generally, house values go up, but in the event that they don’t and a borrower defaults, the equity in the home, or your down payment, is intended to cover this loss. This is why most lenders restrict a mortgage’s loan-to-value ratio, or LTV, to 80% of the house value.

Does this sale affect me, the borrower?

Yes, and it starts at the application process. But you shouldn’t be worried; it’s nothing you haven’t probably already heard about, especially if you’re been doing your homework.

(And law protects you from abuses by the new owner of your loan).

For a lender to be able to sell in the secondary mortgage market, the loans need to meet the requirements of the investor buying them; it makes sense that investors are willing to pay more for higher-quality mortgages.

In essence, mortgages

are underwritten so that they can be sold for the best possible price. This is why underwriting guidelines can be strict and why lenders want to see proof of employment and income to make sure you can afford to repay the loan without stretching your budget.

The interest rate you’re offered also reflects the price that investors will pay for your mortgage — and lenders use all kinds of info such as credit score and debt-to-income ratios to determine your overall mortgage-worthiness (read: likelihood of repayment). It’s easier to sell a mortgage in the secondary market when an investor is confident the borrower is unlikely to default.

What happens to borrowers who can’t repay?

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) works to protect someone who is struggling to pay the mortgage. Even though a new company now owns the loan, this company still has to follow standards to collect on a delinquent mortgage. To prevent servicer abuses, servicers are required to reach out to borrowers to help them solve the problem through options such as a loan modification or short sale before foreclosing on a loan.

Carson Colts Football Is Back!

Angela Jackson Are you ready for some football? It’s that time of the year and football fans of all ages are excited and rooting for their favorite teams. While Carson is hoping to be home of the Raiders or the Chargers; Carson football fans attention is on their local high school team, the Carson Colts.

Last Thursday, September 3rd the Colts varsity team went heads up against Fairfax High School.

They are looking good but unfortunately they came up short came up with a loss, 31 to 34. None the less these young men are contenders and are still the team to watch as Coach Kevin McCall continues to groom these mighty Colts to be scholars and athletes.

Why should we have family night? What does it do for us?

The real question people should be asking is; why aren’t we having family night? Family Night is for you to have conversations and bond with your family members. For example it could be every Friday you have family night and play board games, watch a movie, etc. It doesn’t matter what you do as long as you’re bonding and spending time with each other.

Are you wondering well I have it all planned for a day of every week I just don’t know what to do. Here are some examples of

I love to spend time with my family but sometimes your like I don’t need to bond with them I know everything about them because obviously I live with them.

Well guess what your wrong you do need to bond because overtime you’ll find out something they have never told you before.

Whatever is hindering your family getting together, just be bold, tell your parents and family members you want to start having family night.

Once you have family night, write and tell us what your family did, take a picture, and send it in and we will post the picture of your family spending time together.

I imani Brown know that I have a crush and I’m not going to lie I’ve liked him since 6th grade but I’m don’t know if I would ever have the courage to tell him because he might not like me.

shorter. Anyway my whole point of this article is to tell you not to be afraid to tell your crush that you like him/her because you don’t know if he/she might like you and was too scared to tell you. I basically learned from what I did not do.

When I was in 6th grade my friends decided to tell him but I pretended that I did not like him because 3 of us liked the same person and I was kind of tall and he was kind of short like 2 inches

I’m told a crush usually will go away so don’t worry if you never get together. If you do get together make sure your with someone you really like and not someone you just think is cute.

And a word of advice never lie to a crush when you know how you really feel about them. A couple of things not to do when you like someone is stare at them or stalk or send them secret notes that’s not very mature. Your crush might be scared of you after you stalk them.

Ilene Renteria and Zoraima Tapia were the runner ups for Miss Carson.

Jim Dear supporters, however, were not swayed even after hearing a second legal counsel confirm the statements were not true, continued to approach the podium defending the City Clerk.

The most colorful analogy came from Carson resident Tommie Williams who compared Jim Dear to Jim Jones, the leader of the Jonestown Massacre.

“I see some people are still willing to drink the koolaid even after hearing the truth” Williams said.
