Boarding the Goodyear Blimp

Carson Courier Publisher James Thomas Sr, and Photograper, Kelvin Brown are joined by Ralph Herrera and his Daughter and our Pilot, Kristen Arambula after a ride in the Spirit of Innovation. by James Thomas

Carson has had its share of famous individuals who are current or past residents. Brandy and Ray J Norwood, Actor, Producer, Director Forrest Whitaker, NBA referee Violet Palmer are a fewof the most recognizable names.

However, none are more famous or known the world over as the “Goodyear Blimp.” Though the term “Blimp” has traditionally referred to any one of a fleet of airships operated by Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company I was honored to ride in the “Spirit of Innovation” on a clear fall day along with Carson Courier photographer, Kelvin Brown.

Inside The Goodyear Blimp

The Blimps are seen on television weekly and in some cases daily, as they capture live aerial views of live sporting events.

It is surprising to know that the Blimp also known as an “Airship” can fly to Canada and across countryduring the day or evening hours. Our pilot Kristn Arambula made sure our ride was as smooth as riding in a automobile. She talked about being a fixed wing aircraft pilot in addition to being a certified blimp pilot with passion and a true love for her job.

Goodyear says there are more aastronauts in the United States than there are blimp pilots.

As we toured over the cities of Carson, Long Beach, San Pedro and Rancho Palos Verdes we were joined briefly by three “Tiger Jets” that disappeared as quickly as they appeared. The ride was surprinsingly smooth considering I had never flown in a aircraft with the windows open. An interesting moment took place when pilot Kristen had to untangle a couple of cables dangling in front of the blimp. She did this by making the nose of the blimp “bounce.” I had the feeling she was more amused by our reaction.

It was truly an enjoyable experience and I look forward to my next ride with Carsons most famous resident.
