that the San Diego Chargers owners believe Carson is the best place for their team and fans, the eyes of the world are going to be on Carson for a long time if the stadium does indeed become a reality.

The City of Carson has been in the news most recently for things that may not show the city in the best possible light.

Unfortunately, there are people who love to capitalize off of gossip, rumors and plan ole negativity.

Here at the Carson Courier it is my goal with each issue to be fair and objective.

There are no hidden agendas or back room deals with politicians or anyone else for that matter.

The job of the community newspaper is to keep ALL residents of the community informed and residents are constantly calling to thank us for doing just that.

I plan to always show Carson to the world in the best possible light, while being factual and honest with the residents.

When you are in the newspaper business you learn that people love or hate you.

There is no in between.

I thank God for the people who love and hate the Carson Courier.

Those who love us, encourage us to be better. Those who hate us, encourage us to be GREATER. Let’s all move forward together and show the world that Carson truly is a city whose future is unlimited.

A baby is happy when their diaper is changed. A light bulb must be changed when it burns out. If you don’t like what you’re watching on TV, you can change the channel.

Often when I’m dressing for church, I change outfits two or three times. However, changing our lives isn’t always welcomed or easy. Real change in your attitude, actions, food choices, time management, faith, finances and relationships are not easy but they are definitely possible. One small change can lead to big change in your life.

Perseverance and patience are needed to achieve results with your; weight loss, becoming debt free, becoming clean and sober, finishing your book, graduating from college, building your business/ministry, healing your heart from grief, loss, divorce or disappointment.

I have always been inspired by the many stories I learn about perseverance. One inspirational story I share as a keynote speaker for conferences is about Walt Disney. I live near Disneyland, but I have grown out of my childhood fascination and excitement about going to Disneyland.

However, Walt Disney’s perseverance is something that fuels my determination to keep the main thing…the MAIN THING! Disney’s request for a

When one sets out to launch a church it’s never an easy task.

When Pastors Javier and Laura Luna said yes to the call to Pastor they knew it would not be easy but they did not let this hinder their walk with God. “We started having service at Carson Park 18 months ago,” Javier Luna enthusiastically shared as he moved chairs around the room and invited me to come to service.

When attending this spirit-filled nondenominational church expect to be greeted with warmth and an encouraging energy. Both Pastor Javier Luna and Laura Luna flow in the gifts of the Spirit and teach the word of God with love and clarity.

Tax Law with Anthony Sykes I had a call from a person who received a notice from the Internal Revenue Service.

They called the number on the letter but could not get through to anyone. They wanted to know if they could go to the local office and get it resolved. I asked them to come in to see me so that I could tell if it were something small or simple and they could handle it themselves.

There is no more walk in service at most IRS offices, now you have to make an appointment and there is only one office that takes appointments in the Los Angeles area and it is limited to ten

people a day.

How did this happen? The IRS budget was cut by about 16 percent last year. Budget cuts have forced the Internal Revenue Service to reduce customer service. The phone calls take longer to get answered, the answer you receive may not be correct because there are not as many experienced people to answer the phones. You can still go to a local IRS office but there are fewer forms available and there may not be anyone available to help you.

What can you do?

If you receive a notice do not procrastinate if you want to handle it yourself

do so. Our clients give us their notices to handle for them. The budget cuts affect everything at IRS, which means if you file an amended tax return it will take longer to process.

Also it will take longer for the IRS to respond back to you. You can go to the IRS website and find information and answers to questions. You should also make sure your tax person is qualified to talk to IRS on your behalf.

Remember as the IRS budget goes down enforcement will go up.

It is refreshing to hear famous people speaking their real mind in lieu of trying to be politically correct.

Recently, Tom Brady, four-time Super Bowl Champion Quarterback returned some heat to Boston Magazine who called his business partner a “glorified snake-oil salesman.”

Tom Brady said, “I disagree with a lot of things that people tell you to do. You’ll probably go out and drink Coca-Cola and think, ‘Oh yeah, that’s no problem.’ Why? Because they pay lots of money for advertisements to make you think you should drink Coca-Cola for a living? No, I totally disagree with that. And when people do that, I think that’s quackery. And the fact that they can sell that to kids? I mean, that’s poison for kids. But they keep doing it."

I found this really cool because outing the world's largest liquid sugar seller is something that most famous folks would never do, even if they know the truth.

Tom Brady did not stop at Coca Cola, where he also went on to say, “I think we’ve been

lied to by a lot of food companies over the years, by a lot of beverage companies over the years. But we still do it.

That’s just America, and that’s what we’ve been conditioned to.

We believe that Frosted Flakes is a food.

You just keep eating those things and you keep wondering why we have just incredible rates of disease in our country.

No one thinks it has anything to do with what we put in our body.”

I extend high marks to Tom Brady, mainly due to how excessive sugar consumption is the leading cause to several health problems, particularly chronic ones like diabetes, hypertension and cancer, including breast cancer. Added sugars hide in 74% of processed foods under more than 60 different names, and such foodstuffs are created in a laboratory to sell more products.

Being made in a laboratory is not something companies brag about. which is why Tom Brady's remarks only raised a tiny response presumably hoping that it would quietly go away.

A Coca-Cola Company spokesperson offered a response to Brady's comments by

calling itself a "responsible beverage company and marketer."

As a responsible beverage company and marketer, we prominently provide calorie and sugar information for our beverages so people can choose what makes sense for them and their families.”

It would great if more role models spoke out during October's breast cancer month to recognize how good dietary behaviors can prevent this most common cancer among women.

Celebrities are taught that elevated consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages is associated with higher breast density, a strong risk factor for breast cancer.

Uncalled for consumption of sweetened loaded foodstuff is also associated with higher density breasts among postmenopausal women. In view of that, cancer prevention consists of living SugarAlert!

If you have not read the last few columns of “Sexing Over 60,” please take a look at the previous Carson Courier editions to catch up on the previous information. As promised, this week’s column will conclude the topic of “Sexing Over 60—Is It Taboo?” and the discussion will focus on sexually transmitted diseases and overall sexual health.

One of the greatest misconceptions about sexing over 60 is that individuals in this age group are free and clear of contracting a sexually transmitted disease, which is entirely inaccurate. I have treated many patients over the course of my nursing career, ages 60 and above diagnosed with sexually transmitted diseases of various sorts, so I encourage you readers not to believe the hype!

It is a fact that the elderly population are at a higher risk for many reasons: lack of regular STD screening, an increased risk of HIV/AIDS due to a women’s decrease of vaginal lubrication, not using condoms and a decreased immune system.

Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs)

What is a sexually transmitted disease (STD) or sexually transmitted infection (STDI)? A sexually transmitted disease or infection is exactly what it sounds like—an infection produced from intimacy with someone who has a particular disease or infection. Many think that STDs can only be transmitted through intercourse; however there are some infections that can be produced through skin-to-skin contact.

Herpes and genital warts are two types of STDs transmitted via skinskin contact (such as through oral sex). Other STDs that are commonly diagnosed are: Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, Syphilis and HIV/AIDS.

Symptoms

The most damaging perspective about having a sexually transmitted disease is that many patients believe that there must be symptoms present in order to have an STD, when in fact some patients find out during a routine office visit.

Common symptoms to watch for are: fever and flu-like symptoms, genital itching, burning or discomfort, vaginal discharge, swollen lymph nodes or a feeling of pressure in the abdomen or blisters or bumps in the genital area.

Now, I don’t want you to panic and feel that any of these symptoms are always related to a sexually transmitted disease because there are other disorders that may mimic a sexually transmitted disease. The only way to know for sure is through ann STD test performed by your trained physician. Take the time to get tested!

Overall Sexual Health

Sexual health in my opinion is overlooked a lot after the age of 60 because many don’t find it relevant to overall health. Younger people that I have talked with believe that having sex at this age is embarrassing or impossible—especially for parents or grandparents. Many patients over 60 giggle or frown when asked about sexual health during routine visits. The myth about this topic is that it is only set aside for the younger population. With the advent of the “cougar” or “lion,” the facts are that many younger men are dating older women and visa versa.

Sexual health is imperative and getting checked regularly is important. Exposure toGetting an STD has no age limit. If there is intimacy there is a possibility of getting an STD no matter your age.

Women over 60 must not forget the pap smear, which is recommended every three years and a pelvic exam if indicated. Cervical cancer or vaginal cancer is still a risk factor at this age and women that experience incontinence should take the time to discuss this concern with your practitioner to perhaps find a remedy. And, men don’t forget your prostate exam! It could save your life.

Alonzo Williams Legendary DJ and Author Speaks

Sitting on Avalon just past El Segundo is by some accounts, the spot where West Coast Hip Hop got its start.

If you agree that West Coast Hip Hop began with the World Class Wreckin’ Crew then you agree whole heartedly and you acknowledge that Alonzo Williams, West Coast DJ, Producer, Business Owner, and now Author is directly responsible for what we know as West Coast Hip Hop.

If you saw the movie Straight Outta of Compton, then you saw Williams Character portrayed on the big screen. While Williams is grateful to be included in the movie, Williams acknowledges that the portrayal is questionable. “The truth gets twisted depending on whose telling the his story,” shared a reflective Williams.

In order to ensure his story was told accurately, Williams wrote a book entitled “N.ot W.ithout A.lonzo: The History of West Coast Hip Hop”. In the book Williams shares how Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, Eazy E and DJ Yella got their start.

He highlights how his role as mentor and producer helped shape their careers and gave each young impressionable artist their first real start.

Family members of photographer George Castro came from Palm Springs, California to celebrate George being the first male recipient of the Harold Hambrick Positive Image Award.

Harold was the Executive Producer of the Los Angeles Black Business Expo for more than 20 years.

“I felt it was important to tell my legacy. I never had to pull a gun on Dre or Eazy to be in World Class Reckin’ Crew,” Williams shared.

Perhaps you remember the groups biggest hit, “Turn off the Lights”. It was during the development of World Class Reckin Crew that Williams groomed Dr. Dre, Eazy E, and DJ Yella.

Under the direction and leadership of Williams they were able to learn about the music industry as artist.

Williams was doing what had been done for him, he opened the door for young men with talent and interest and took them by the hand until they felt they could walk on their own.

Williams admits he wasn’t the greatest producer but he does and always has understood music and the music industry. As a well know DJ and Club owner in the 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s Williams took his understanding of music and created a group that had enough success to be signed with Epic and produce music which is still remembered and loved.

According to Williams, “If you really want to know the truth about West Cost Hip Hop, the story about how this West Coast Hip Hop thing evolved you need to read my book.” Williams adds, “I believe that what I have done has single handedly shaped West Coast Hip Hop.” What is clear when you sit down with Williams is he has a wealth of knowledge about the music industry and anyone desiring to enter into the industry could only learn from Williams.

Imagine being able to sit under his tutelage. One can only imagine what a start an artist would have with someone of Williams’ knowledge and resources steering and guiding them. Without a doubt Williams has made a mark on the music industry.

So what’s next for Williams?

According to Williams he is busy promoting his book, managing his club The Loft in Compton, CA, and planning the next great entertainment production.

Williams is always open to blaze a new trail in entertainment and The Carson Courier will be watching and ready to report his next endeavor.

Dear is also the subject of a recall effort that has gathered more than 12,000 signatures.

As of this writing the signatures were being verified by the County Registrars office.

The signatures were taken from Carson City hall to the registrars escorted by Carson Sheriffs deputies.

A Man For All Seasons: City of Refuge’s Elder Edwin Perry

The City of Refuge Church is one of the largest churches in Southern California. Pastored by Bishop Noel Jones for more than 20 years, the churchs membership which was a few hundred when Bishop Jones assumed leadership, has exploded to more than 20,000 members and a worldwide television audience.

It takes a large staff to operate a ministry of this size and faithful, capable leaders. I was blessed to sit down with one of those leaders, Bishop Jone’s “right hand man,” Elder Edwin Perry.

Elder Perry, you are the quintessential right hand man to Bishop Noel Jones.

How long have you worked in this capacity and what are your main duties?

I have been affiliated with City of Refuge for 25 years. I have been working with Bishop Jones almost 22 years. In June 2016, City of Refuge will be celebrating 22 years under the leadership of Bishop Jones as Pastor. My title is Operations Manager and I deal in the administrative and business side of the church. My day to day normally consists of random duties. I actually have my hands in everything, as well as any special projects Bishop Jones assigns me. When I come to work, I can expect anything.

We work with bereavement to testimonies; from homelessness to someone needing direction, core salvation, prayer, spiritual counseling, couple calls, suicide calls. My main goal everyday is to meet the needs of the people.

What things do you find most rewarding about your ministry?

We are no longer worried if we have enough chairs for the sanctuary; we are asking our media consults for more band-width to accommodate our internet viewers. Times change, trends change, but the bible never changes. It is just the method of doing things.

What is your biggest personal challenge, being in a position of such great responsibility?

I have difficulty turning the ministry off. For 21 years, I have become so entrenched in Kingdom building and helping others, it seems to be all I know, so that leaves me lacking in other social aspects of my life. I have met so many people, but I don’t really know them. I would tell young preachers or church leaders that they cannot live their life from sacrifice. Don’t lose yourself. When you are in the spotlight and deeply involved in a ministry, you wake up with a schedule, you follow that schedule all day, you go home, you go to sleep, you get up and you do it again. It gets to the point, where you don’t even know what you like; you are constantly consumed with your mission.

I am making changes. I turn all electronics off and work related things when I go home. My mindset is changing.

But the reward of working in such a dynamic ministry is still very much in my life.
