Winter doesn’t just bring snowflakes and cozy sweaters - it brings black ice, blinding snow, stalled vehicles, and pileups on the highway. And if you’re driving for work, commuting to a site, or making deliveries, you can’t always wait for sunny skies. You need to know how to prepare your vehicle, adjust your driving, and respond to dangerous conditions when they hit. Even the most experienced drivers can get into trouble when roads are icy or visibility is low. So, this talk isn’t just for rookies, it’s refresher for everyone. Because overconfidence can be just as dangerous as inexperience.
Every year in the Northern U.S. states and Canada, winter road conditions contribute to thousands of vehicle collisions. Many involve injuries. Some resulting in fatalities. The leading causes: Driving too fast, following too closely, failing to prepare, and underestimating the weather.
But snow, ice, and wind don’t care how confident you are. What matters is how prepared you are and how you drive when the weather takes a turn.
Î Tires Matter More Than You Think – Install four proper winter tires. Check pressure weekly. Inspect tread depth.
Î Check Your Fluids and Battery – Use winter washer fluid. Top up antifreeze. Test your battery’s strength.
Î Inspect Wipers and Lights – Replace worn blades. Confirm all lights are working and clean.
Î Keep Gas at Least Half Full – Running low in winter is dangerous if you get stranded.
Î Pack an Emergency Kit – Include blankets, gloves, flashlight, food, water, shovel, scraper, sand or kitty litter.
From Curt Featherby
* Slow Down – Speed limits are for ideal conditions. Adjust for weather.
* Leave More Space – Triple your following distance.
* Use Your Lights – Keep low beams on during snow or fog.
* Steer Smoothly – Avoid jerky movements. Accelerate and brake gently.
* No Cruise Control – Always maintain full control on slick surfaces.
* Watch for Black Ice – Especially on bridges and shaded areas.
* Avoid Sudden Braking – If you skid, steer gently in the direction you want to go.
* Know When to Stay Off the Road
Sometimes the best decision is not to drive at all. If visibility is near zero or roads are hazardous, reroute, delay, or call your supervisor. No delivery or job deadline is worth your life, or someone else’s.

Î Maintain and inspect vehicles regularly.
Î Use backup communication tools.
Î Secure all tools and materials safely.
Î Clear all snow and ice from windows, lights, mirrors, and roof
Winter weather is unpredictable. But your reaction to it doesn’t have to be. Prepare your vehicle, adjust your driving, and stay alert behind the wheel. One smart decision could be the one that gets you home safely.
Because it’s not just snow out there - it’s a serious safety hazard. And you’re the one who can do something about it.
