SAFETY REMINDERS
With the cold coming and the illnesses that come with it:
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), keeping hands clean is one of the most important steps we can take to avoid getting sick and spreading germs to others. Many diseases and conditions are spread by not washing hands with soap and clean, running water.
How Germs Get onto Hands and Make People Sick
Feces from people or animals is an important source of germs like Salmonella, E. coli 0157, and norovirus that cause diarrhea, and it can spread some respiratory infections like adenovirus and hand-footmouth disease. These kinds of germs can get onto hands after people use the toilet or change a diaper, but also in less obvious ways, like after handling raw meats that have invisible amounts of animal poop on them. A single gram of human feces, which is about the weight of a paper clip, can contain one trillion germs. Germs can also get onto hands if people touch any object that has germs on it because someone coughed or sneezed on it, or because it was touched by some other contaminated object. When these germs get onto hands and are not washed off, they can be passed from person to person and make people sick.
HANDWASHING FACTS
Î Washing Hands Prevents Illnesses and Spread of Infections to Others
Î Handwashing with soap removes germs from hands and thus can prevent infections.
Î People frequently touch their eyes, nose, and mouth without even realizing it. Germs can get into the body through the eyes, nose and mouth and make us sick.
Î Germs from unwashed hands can get into foods and drinks while people prepare or consume them. Germs can multiply in some types of foods or drinks, under certain conditions, and make people sick.
Î Germs from unwashed hands can be transferred to other objects, like handrails, tabletops, or toys, and then transferred to another person’s hands.
Î Removing germs through handwashing therefore helps prevent diarrhea and respiratory infections and may even help prevent skin and eye infections.
Teaching people about handwashing helps them and their communities stay healthy. Handwashing education in the community:
◘ Reduces the number of people who get sick with diarrhea by 23-40%;
◘ Reduces diarrheal illness in people with weakened immune systems by 58%;
◘ Reduces respiratory illnesses, like colds, in the general population by 16-21%; and
◘ Reduces absenteeism due to gastrointestinal illness in schoolchildren by 29-57%.
◘ Washing hands with soap could protect about 1 out of every 3 young children who get sick with diarrhea and almost 1 out of 5 young children with respiratory infections like pneumonia.
◘ Although people around the world clean their hands with water, very few use soap to wash their hands. Washing hands with soap removes germs much more effectively
◘ Estimated global rates of handwashing after using the toilet are only 19%.
Lastly, hand washing helps battle the rise in antibiotic resistance because the reduction in the amount of antibiotics people use reduces the likelihood of antibiotic resistance developing.
STAY CLEAN AND HEALTHY!
SIMPLY WASH YOUR HANDS WITH SOAP!

EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT
Jordan Zientek
From kitchens to construction sites and now to the railroad, Jordan Zientek’s journey is anything but ordinary.

Born and raised in Kalamazoo, Michigan, Jordan graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science and an Associate’s degree in Building Information Management, earning a remarkable 3.98 GPA.
Before joining CDL in January 2024, he built a diverse skill set- crafting original recipes as a chef at Brann’s Steakhouse and Zeb’s Trading Company, supporting students with special needs as a para-professional, and working hands-on in commercial construction with experience in steel, plumbing, and electrical work.
Today, Jordan thrives as a Signal Maintainer in Railroad Signal Maintenance, where every day brings new challenges and opportunities to problem-solve, learn, and keep vital systems running safely. He says the best part of his job is “being able to work outside and travel around the community- not doing the same thing every day and being in positions to learn new things.”
Known for his reliability and technical expertise in tools like AutoCAD, Revit, and 3ds Max, Jordan has become the go-to teammate others turn to for help. His story reflects adaptability, curiosity, and dedication to growth- qualities that make him an essential part of the CDL team.

CDL Group of Companies is proud to be among the nominees for the 2025 To The Stars: Kansas Business Awards, an annual program that recognizes companies, organizations, and individuals across Kansas for their outstanding contributions to the state’s economy and the well-being of their communities. Lieutenant Governor and Secretary of Commerce David Toland announced that this year’s awards will be held on Thursday, October 16, at the Robert W. Plaster Center in Pittsburg, Kansas.
Nominees represent a wide range of industries - from agriculture, apprenticeships, and healthcare to manufacturing, small business, retail, and nonprofit leadership. CDL’s selection reflects its continued growth, innovation, and support of both the local Pittsburg area and the broader Kansas economy.
“The ‘To The Stars: Kansas Business Awards’ ceremony is more than a banquet - it’s a way to acknowledge and celebrate the business achievements and entrepreneurial spirit that is found in every region of our state,” said Lieutenant Governor and Secretary of Commerce David Toland. “It’s because of our trailblazing businesses and dedicated individuals that we can keep growing our economy and bringing more opportunities to our communities.”
This recognition highlights CDL’s role in creating opportunities that strengthen both Pittsburg and the broader Kansas business landscape.
The October ceremony will bring together leaders and innovators from across the state to celebrate these accomplishments and the future growth of Kansas industry. CDL is honored to stand alongside fellow nominees who share a commitment to driving progress and opportunity across our communities.
