CDL GOES TO GIRARD HIGHSCHOOL
The CDL trades managers had the opportunity to speak to local highschool students at Girard Highschool. They shared information about the skill it takes to go into each field and the different trades available to them outside after they graduate. These trades presentations included manufacturing, HVAC, engineering, electrical, and plumbing!

Due to the deficit of qualified tradespeople in the industry, we find it important to reach the younger generation and educate them about endless possibilities inside the trades industry. With strong partnerships with schools, we close that deficit gap together.

CRANE CERTIFICATION CLASS
CDL takes pride in making sure that its employees grow to the best of their potential with the company. To get permission for training, divisions were asked to submit crane training prospects to the safety office to attend the 4 day mobile crane course led by NCCER instructors. Applicants must complete applications and registrations prior to the course, this process is for background checks of the proposed crane operators. For this class, managers had the option to select employees to part take in a crane certification class in order to operate and be knowledgeable around a new type of equipment.
This crane course is outsourced and costs roughly $2,000 per student. The course consists of classroom training and hands on training at the Pittsburg, KS location. In order to receive a certificate, students must attend a week long course, pass a written exam and pass a practical exercise to achieve a crane operator license from NCCER. Once these things have been completed, students will receive their certification which will stay valid for 5 years before it will need to be renewed.
Additional courses can be arranged as needed and/or required for CDL’s work force to continue to excel in each field. Please contact your supervisor if you have questions about any possible classes that may be held in the future.

Railroad Maintainer Spotlight:
Meet Carson Sokolosky!
Carson joined the Canadian division of CDL in November 2022 as a full-time employee looking after the 22 assets on 140 miles of track for the Carlton Trail Railway in Northern Saskatchewan. Carson is also a full-time student completing his second year of his bachelor’s in business commerce through the University of Saskatchewan. Carson was omitted into CPs signal school at 17 years old and was one of the youngest certified maintainers in Canadian class one history at 18 years old. Prior to his 19th birthday he found himself with a mainline territory with 25 trains a day and 36 assets in total.

With Carson’s self-motivation, professionalism and drive for more has led to an extremely bright future in the railway industry and we at CDL are fortunate to have him as an integral part of the team.

LADDER SAFETY MONTH
According to National Ladder Safety
Month, every year over 100 people die in ladder-related accidents, and thousands suffer disabling injuries.
Almost every home in the United Sates has a ladder, and chances are you have used one personally either at work or at home. From changing out a lightbulb to getting on top of a roof, ladders are a common piece of equipment used in almost every home or building and appear to be harmless — and yet according to Injury Facts, thousands of people are killed due to falls from a ladder or scaffolding work. In fact, falls are the second leading cause of death next to highway crashes. Understanding the different types of ladders as well as safe ladder practices are key to preventing falls and other potential injuries.
Always inspect the ladder prior to using it. If the ladder is damaged, it must be removed and tagged until repaired or discarded.
Avoid electrical hazards! –Look for overhead power lines before handling a ladder. Avoid using a metal ladder near power lines or exposed energized electrical equipment.
Keep your body near the middle of the step and always face the ladder while climbing.
Always maintain a 3-point (two hands and a foot, or two feet and a hand) contact on the ladder when climbing.
Make sure you read and follow all labels and markings on the ladders.
Be sure that all locks on an extension ladder are properly engaged.
An extension or straight ladder used to access an elevated surface must extend at least 3 feet above the point of support.
Do not stand on the three top rungs of a straight, single or extension ladder.
The proper angle for setting up a ladder is to place its base a quarter of the working length of the ladder from the wall or other vertical surface
To prevent ladder displacement, place in a safe location away from other work activities and must be secured or a barricaded to keep traffic away from the ladder.
Do not place a ladder on boxes, barrels or other unstable bases to obtain additional height.
Do not move or shift a ladder while a person or equipment is on the ladder.
Do not exceed the maximum load rating of a ladder. Be aware of the ladder’s load rating and of the weight it is supporting, including the weight of any tools or equipment.
Only use ladders and appropriate accessories (ladder levelers, jacks or hooks) for their designed purposes.
Ladders must be free of any slippery material on the rungs, steps or feet.
Do not use a self-supporting ladder (e.g., step ladder) as a single ladder or in a partially closed position.
Do not use the top step/rung of a ladder as a step/rung unless it was designed for that purpose.
Use a ladder only on a stable and level surface, unless it has been secured (top or bottom) to prevent displacement.
