Bill Van Hoy TPGA Executive Director
We are in the final stages of preparation for the Propane Convention + Expo (page 12) taking place August 7-9 in Galveston. It’s not too late to come join us! You cannot find a better deal: training, CE credit, nearly 100 vendors and connecting with other propane professionals.
The cover story this month (page 8) centers around how one oil patch company made the switch to mobile propane generators to power their light towers at their frac sites. The story is important to hear for two reasons. One, because oil companies are increasingly looking toward more eco-conscious solutions. Two, because they are utilizing rented propane units. Have you considered adding rental equipment to your arsenal?
ProCOT has scheduled their annual Propane Fire School (page 19) for September 29-30 in College Station. Make sure you’ve invited your local emergency responders to this important training.
Last, we’re highlighting cattle brands heated by propane (page 30). The company that offers them also offers propane-branding equipment for other needs, like for construction contractors who want to brand their property in the field.
See you in Galveston!

It’s no surprise that propane in the Permian Basin has a long history. Propane has always been the clean sibling in the oil and natural gas family, as it is extracted from its heavier hydrocarbons. Increasingly, propane is being utilized in the oilfield to provide essential power, in a full circle economy.
The oilfield, specifically the Permian Basin, is an incredibly vast target market. The oil-and-gas-producing area located in West Texas and the adjoining area of southeastern New Mexico, is roughly 250 miles wide and 300 miles long. According to the Railroad Commission of Texas, there are more than 7,000 fields. The greater Permian Basin accounts for nearly 40 percent of all oil production in the United States and nearly 15 percent of its natural gas production, according to the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas.
Apache Oil, located in the Permian Basin, was looking to transition its diesel-powered light towers at its frac sites to something more eco-friendly. They reached out to Evergreen Mobile Power after searching on LinkedIn. This led Scott Mook, director of sales at Evergreen, to quickly hop on a flight the next morning to check out their site.
This chance partnership led to Apache adding Evergreen’s Juice Box units to their work sites. The Juice Box is a mobile generator that can use propane or CNG to produce electricity. Apache wanted to jettison their diesel light towers in favor of cleaner electric ones. The Juice Box was able to power that transition.
Mook says that each Juice Box unit can power 4-5 electric light towers, significantly reducing emissions and operational costs, especially in comparison to diesel units.
Additionally, each Juice Box consumes about three gallons of propane daily, presenting a lower emissions profile and operational cost compared to diesel alternatives.
For Apache, this was just the beginning of the story. Rolfson Rentals, a part of Rolfson Oil, the largest oil field only fuel service provider in North America, added the Juice Boxes to their arsenal of rentables. “Demand for CNG and LPG in the oilfield has been steadily increasing, especially in applications related to power generation,” said Ramon Diaz, vice president of rentals with Rolfson Rentals. “Customers appreciate [the Juice Boxes] as a true plug-and-play solution. Its compact design and easily customizable configuration make it quick and simple to adapt to a variety of applications.”
Diaz says his customers are currently using the generator primarily for electric light towers, emergency shower trailers, and cooling trailers. “We’re excited to announce that we’re expanding our fleet with even more equipment that will also be powered by this generator.” Currently, Rolfson Rentals has 30 units in its fleet with plans to expand to approximately 50 units over the next 12 months. “While we’ve just launched this dual fuel mobile generator, we view it as a strategic opportunity to enter new industries—including emergency response and construction.”
Diaz says one of the most common concerns they hear from customers is simply: Will it work? “It may be surprising, but there are very few mobile solutions available for smaller kW propane generators,” he said. “Within that niche, until now, we, too, struggled to find a true plug-and-play package. This unit stands apart from anything else currently on the market.”
"Many generators on the market require complicated setups and lengthy training, but this unit is designed for ease of use. The simple design makes operation straightforward. Training is quick, which allows users to get started quickly with minimal support.”
Butch’s Propane is the propane provider for Apache. Andrew Frain, general manager at Butch’s Propane said they utilize a range of propane tank sizes in the oilfield based on the site’s fuel load and runtime needs. Smaller applications like flare stacks, generators, and light towers often use 500-gallon tanks. However, the most common setup includes manifolded 1,000-gallon tanks. For power generation and microgrid support, they deploy larger bulk tanks—ranging up to 24,000 gallons—to serve as primary or backup fuel sources on high-demand locations.
“Clients are using propane to power a range of equipment, including mobile light towers, frac water heating systems, wellhead heating, temporary housing, and power generation,” Frain said. “As more customers look for less expensive solutions for their energy needs, propane has become a clean and reliable alternative.”
Butch’s Propane uses remote tank monitoring systems across all their locations. For customers that request tanks without monitors, they offer scheduled checks or customer will-call options. “Operating in the oilfield demands a robust, safety-first mindset,” Frain said. “We work closely with our customers to comply with all safety protocols.”
Seeing the trickle up from Apache to Rolfson Rentals and Butch’s Propane brings up the two-fold opportunity for propane providers that service oilfield customers. First, they of course need propane as they transition to more eco-friendly equipment at their sites. Second, the opportunity to additionally provide the rentals for their use, such as the Juice Box that Rolfson Rentals has available in their rental company. Rental rates for Juice Boxes range from $600 to $800 per week or $1,500 to $2,000 per month, with discounts for frequent users.
Propane suppliers can profit from both equipment rental and fuel sales, with significant maintenance and operational savings over diesel for the customer. These units need to be serviced every 500 hours vs. every 100 hours for diesel.
Battery alternatives are cost-prohibitive and lack recycling options, making the propane-powered generator a more attractive solution as subsidies for batteries decrease. Of course, oilfield customers are not the only market for rentable portable generators. Disaster relief operations, especially in sleeping and food prep areas, also find propane to be the cleaner solution.
Rolfson Rentals’ long-term strategy is to expand into additional segments of the oil and gas sector. “Our holding company, Tyton Holdings, operates other companies within the oilfield sector,” Diaz said, “which creates opportunities to cross over and deploy these units to a broader range of customers.”

A new hire onboarding checklist can make all the difference in today’s workplace, especially with so many teams working remotely or in hybrid setups. When done right, the employee onboarding process can help new hires feel confident, connected, and ready to contribute. It builds trust, clarifies expectations, and shows employees they’re supported from day one. That early investment in your people can pay off with stronger engagement, faster ramp-up times, and better retention.

An employee onboarding checklist is a structured list of tasks designed to guide new hires through the first days, weeks, and months of their employment.
It includes things like paperwork, setting up systems, meeting coworkers, and learning how the job gets done. The purpose is simple: give people the tools, information, and support they need to get started and feel like they belong.
A pre-onboarding checklist gets your new hires ready and welcomed before they start. This practical step sets expectations early, builds momentum, and knocks out essential tasks like paperwork and account setup ahead of time. The payoff? Day one shifts from administrative headaches to real connections and cultural immersion.
Many onboarding steps can be completed before day one, especially when there’s a gap between offer acceptance and the start date. With the right onboarding software, new employees can review training materials, explore company resources, and sign required documents in advance. Just be mindful of wage and hour laws. Depending on employee classification, location, and other factors, time spent reviewing materials or completing forms before the first day may be compensable.
Before your new employees show up, handle the backstage stuff. Sort out the forms, computers, and other gear ahead of time. Their first day will go smoother, and they can focus on learning their role.
Here are a few steps you may want to complete before a new hire’s first day:
• Send a welcome email with key details (start date, dress code, schedule)
• Set up employee accounts (email, internal systems, HR tools)
• Complete paperwork (tax forms, background checks, direct deposit)
• Share company resources, including your employee handbook
• Prepare and ship equipment if working remotely (laptop, access credentials)
• Notify team members and relevant departments about the new hire’s start date
Day one throws a lot at new people— names, systems, and job expectations all at once. Having a clear plan may reduce the likelihood a new hire will feel overwhelmed and helps create a smooth beginning. It shows your new hire that the team is organized and invested in helping them do well.
Here are a few steps to complete on the new hire’s first day:
• Greet the new hire and tour the workspace (or virtual tools)
• Complete any remaining paperwork, such as forms or benefits enrollment
• Clarify which forms were already submitted during preboarding and which still need to be completed
• Assign a mentor or onboarding buddy for the first week or two
• Introduce the new hire to their team and key stakeholders
• Review job responsibilities, initial projects, and expectations
• Share an overview of the company’s mission, values, and culture
• Discuss your brand identity and what sets your company apart
• Review the training schedule and set meetings with key team members
• Schedule a team lunch or virtual coffee to help the new hire start making connections.
The first week sets the tone. It’s when new hires start learning how things get done, where they fit in, and who they can turn to for support. When there’s a clear plan in place, it’s easier for them to feel included and ready to dive in.
Here are a few key steps to guide your new hire through their first week:
• Set up orientation sessions covering company culture, policies, and benefits
• Set up a meeting with the manager(s) to clarify role expectations and short-term goals
• Invite them to team meetings and to take part in one-on-ones with key collaborators
• Begin training for systems, tools, and internal workflows
• Set expectations around your team’s communication (meetings, online chats)
• Walk through your company org chart or team structure
• Introduce employee resource groups, social committees, or affinity groups
• Provide access to past project examples or team deliverables for context
• Schedule informal meet-and-greets or virtual coffees with other departments
• Complete any required compliance training or certifications
• Schedule a check-in with HR to address questions or concerns
• Assign a mentor or onboarding buddy if not already in place
By the end of the first month, a new hire should have a solid grasp of their role and be
settling into the team. This is a good time to check in, talk through what’s going well, and look for ways they can take on more responsibility.
Here are a few key steps to support your new hires during their first month:
• Have them review short- and longterm performance goals with the manager
• Schedule a progress check-in to offer feedback and answer questions
• Have them complete remaining train-
ing sessions or required certifications
• Encourage them to begin contributing to team projects, deliverables, or client work
• Invite them to company-wide or department-level meetings to stay informed
• Hold team-building activities, in-person or virtual
• Provide access to ongoing learning and development resources
• Introduce employee feedback tools (e.g., pulse surveys or engagement check-ins)
• Reinforce core values and how they show up in everyday work
• Encourage reflection: What’s going well? What’s unclear? What’s next?
Onboarding doesn’t end after a few weeks—it should evolve into a long-term employee onboarding plan that supports growth, engagement, and retention. An effective, ongoing onboarding strategy includes regular feedback, development opportunities, and a clear sense of how each employee fits into the bigger picture.
For your work-from-home or hybrid staff, provide a setup guide that covers tech equipment, team introductions, and communication methods. Include things like:
• Schedule quarterly check-ins focused on career development and goals
• Provide ongoing access to training, certifications, and upskilling tools
• Encourage participation in mentorship programs or peer coaching
• Offer opportunities for cross-training or stretch assignments
• Continue regular feedback sessions with the manager
• Share updates on company initiatives, team priorities, and role alignment
• Keep employees engaged with ongoing team building or wellness activities
• Use employee engagement surveys or check-ins to gather feedback
• Revisit and track individual performance goals regularly
• Encourage managers to share internal mobility opportunities or career paths
Remote and hybrid setups give employees more flexibility but can make it harder for new hires to feel included and supported. Without face-to-face interaction, it’s important to be clear, consistent, and intentional. A solid remote onboarding checklist helps new team members feel connected, even if they’re working from another location.
Support your remote or hybrid hires with a new hire checklist that balances tech setup, team connection, and clear communication:
• Send equipment and tools before the start date (laptop, headset, software logins)
• Schedule a virtual welcome meeting with their manager and direct team
• Provide access to the employee handbook, training schedule, and online onboarding documents
• Set up virtual training sessions for tools, systems, and company workflows
• Use video calls for daily or weekly check-ins during the first few weeks
• Create space for informal interactions, like virtual coffee chats or online messaging tool intros
• Introduce the company culture
through videos, team stories, or valuesbased content
• Assign a remote onboarding buddy to answer questions and offer support
• Clarify communication norms— when to email, ping, or schedule a call
• Keep remote employees looped in on company news and team updates
Legal Requirements and Compliance Employers must give new hires the proper documents and collect signed forms to follow rules at every level—federal, state, and local. A
simple checklist can keep the process organized and help to avoid things getting overlooked.
This checklist helps ensure you’ve collected and organized the necessary paperwork. Getting it done immediately shows new employees that your company takes compliance and preparation seriously.
• Complete Form I-9 (Employment Eligibility Verification)
• Complete Form W-4 (Employee’s Withholding Certificate)
• Complete state tax withholding forms, if applicable
• Provide ACA (Affordable Care Act) notices, as required
• Provide new hire notices (check state and local requirements)
• Provide a direct deposit form
• Distribute the employee handbook and confirm receipt
Some employers include additional documents that go beyond legal requirements in the new hire folder. These documents can help to clearly explain responsibilities, protect the business, and prevent misunderstandings. Examples include:
Non-disclosure or confidentiality agreement, depending on the nature of your business, the location of the business, and the employee’s position. Legal counsel should draft and review these agreements and can help ensure confidentiality, as well as formally notifying employees that businessrelated products and intellectual property belong to the company.
A non-compete contract is between an employee and an employer, where the employee agrees not to compete with the employer or work for a direct competitor for some time after the employee leaves or is terminated. Legal counsel should also draft and review these agreements.
Emergency contact information in the event of an employee’s injury, medical crisis, or other unforeseen situation.
Signed acknowledgment of the employee handbook and policies. This certifies that your new employee has read and understands your company’s policies and procedures and agrees to abide by them.
Document receipt of any company property issued to the employee, such as uniforms, technology, security badges, or other equipment, to keep records clear and avoid misunderstandings down the road.

Joe M. Suarez, 81, a lifelong resident of Kingsville, Texas, passed away on May 21, 2025, in Corpus Christi. Joe owned and operated Ricardo Butane Gas, serving his community with dedication and integrity. Joe’s greatest pride and joy was his family. He is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Mary P. Suarez; his four sons, Dr. Jimmy (Sarah) Suarez, Mike (Maritza) Suarez, John (Rosie) Suarez, and Jesse (Ania) Suarez, all of Kingsville; and ten cherished grandchildren.
Actor Jonathan Joss, best known for his portrayal of Native American characters in television and film, died at age 59 after being shot near his home in San Antonio. Perhaps Joss’ most famous acting credit was voicing the character John Redcorn in animated sitcom King of the Hill, which aired on Fox for 13 seasons from 1997 to 2009. He took over the role from Victor Aaron in the show’s second season after Aaron died in a car accident. A reboot of King of the Hill is scheduled to premiere in August, and Joss had reportedly already begun recording lines for it.
Jimmy B. Kerr embarked on his final ride into the sunset on June 10, 2025. Jimmy’s journey was never confined within the walls of a classroom; he was far more interested in the vast, open fields where horses roamed. His education came from the land itself, from the silent wisdom of the equine friends he cherished. Jimmy served his country with honor in the United States Army before settling into a career that kept him close to the heartland, driving a propane truck across the Fannin County area. Jimmy is survived by wife, Iverna Waggoner, daughters, Connie Skidmore (Danney), Dana Kerr, Jimette Kerr (Kriss Owens), and all of his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Our thoughts are with his family.

While we might all harbor a sweet Lonesome Dove image of Captain Call and Captain Gus McCrae sitting around a fire with their cattle brands warming up in our Americana psyche, it might not be the easiest way to brand cattle these days. (And if you haven’t read Lonesome Dove yet, get on it!)
One technology upgrade for the cattle and related industries is a propane-powered cattle branding iron.
BRAND-FIRST’s propane branding iron heater is made of heavy gauge steel. The design of the burner allows all the irons to heat evenly without regards to positioning of the irons in the heater.
Removable legs allow for easy transportation and can be used from the back of a pickup without the legs. It attaches to standard propane tank. This cattle branding tool is available in 15” and 30” lengths.
You can find it at www. brand-first.com/propanebrand-heater.html.
BRAND-FIRST additionally makes propane heated branding iron tools that are used for other purposes, for instance by beekeepers and construction contractors to mark their property out in the field. The branding tool connects to a standard propane tank. The complete tool assembly consists of a custom engraved branding head, BRAND-FIRST’s propane powered torch and 10-foot hose with standard POL connection.
All of their products, including these propane-powered ones, can be found at www.brand-first.com.
