MY LIBRARY
WINTER AT THE LIBRARY
Meet the Trustees
MEET TRUSTEE: CHRISTINE MELONE

Can you tell us about your background and what inspired you to become a library trustee?
I have been an educator and school leader/principal and Interim Superintendent for my career in both elementary, high school and college/university institutions. I was originally a teacher of the visually impaired and learning disabled and behavior disordered. I have earned a Bachelor of Science in Education, Master of Science in Education and Doctor of Education in Educational Administration. I have served in educational leadership roles in both public and private schools. I previously served on the Library Foundation Board at Indian Trails Library. I also was a volunteer in the ESL program and worked with non-native speakers adults in the community to develop their English skills. I love the library and the great influence and impact on our community, so it is a privilege to serve as a trustee. I believe that literacy and exposure to books and learning is the heart of our community.
What do you believe is the most important role of a library in our community?
I believe the library should be the core of the community. It should be inclusive and be a resource for all and generate love of learning, collaboration and experiences. The library should promote literacy for all ages and a love of reading.
Can you share a memorable experience or achievement during your time as a trustee?
A memorable experience of being a trustee is continual learning and being part of considering the current, past and future endeavors. As a trustee I aspire to maintain the goals and objectives for the library. I also am so inspired when attending library events and observing the joy and interest that the people express.
What are some of the biggest challenges libraries face today, and how do you think we can address them?
The current and future challenges for libraries are to make sure that they are inclusive and collaborative with the communities they serve. On-going communication and outreach regarding the resources and programs that they provide are essential to reach all in their communities.
What are your hopes and goals for the future of the library?
The future of the library requires constant assessment and reflection of needs and services to ensure that there is access for all. Collaboration and dialogue with libraries in the northwest community and the state of Illinois. The Strategic Plan
that was developed is an excellent guide for having an impact on the community. The library must have an ongoing assessment of strength and areas for improvement.
What was your favorite book as a child? As an adult?
My favorite book as a child was "Eloise" by Kay Thompson. My favorite book as an adult is most recently "Leave Only Footprints" by Conor Knighton.
What is your favorite area of the main library or Branch?
It’s very hard to choose a favorite place in the library because I enjoy all the areas. I have spent a lot of time most recently in the children’s area with my grandson and it is very difficult to get him to leave. We have been known to be in there for a long period of time, because of the resources and opportunities to learn and be engaged in we both enjoy that area. The Launch Pad is also a favorite with materials and kits to use creativity, problem solving and learning.

Last winter, enthusiastic students from Wheeling, Buffalo Grove and Prospect Heights visited the library with their families and discovered the magic of reading during Family Literacy Nights. These evenings provided an opportunity for students to receive a free book to start their home collection, tour the library, sign up for a library card, meet youth librarians, explore exciting STEM projects, and participate in storytimes read by their teachers from Community Consolidated School District 21 (CCSD21). It is a wonderful partnership between the library, schools, community partners and families.
Your support can help enhance this initiative, providing even more students with access to books during the next Family Literacy Nights, taking place January-March 2026. Last year, Indian Trails Public Library reached over 1300 people during these events—and with your help, we aim to reach over 1750 this year. Together, we can empower the next generation to dream bigger and strive for greater possibilities.
Thank you for believing in our mission.
Warmly,
Sheila Anderson,
President | Foundation for The Indian Trails Public Library District
