ABOUT ONE BOOK ONE COMMUNITY

Celebrating its tenth year, One Book, One Community (OBOC) is a partnership among Cook Memorial, Indian Trails, and Vernon Area public libraries to bring a community read to the residents we serve. Through OBOC, we seek to encourage conversations around the themes of the selected book in hopes we may come to better understand ourselves and others.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Ann Napolitano is the bestselling author of Hello Beautiful, which was selected as Oprah’s 100th Book Club pick; Dear Edward, an instant New York Times bestseller, a Read with Jenna selection, and an Apple TV+ series; "A Good Hard Look" and "Within Arm’s Reach." Napolitano was previously the associate editor of the literary magazine "One Story." She holds an MFA from New York University and has taught writing at Brooklyn College, NYU and Gotham Writers Workshop. She lives in Brooklyn with her husband and two children.

ABOUT THE BOOK

Hello Beautiful is an emotionally layered and engrossing family story that asks: Can love make a broken person whole?

William Waters grew up isolated and unloved in a house silenced by tragedy — so when he meets the spirited and ambitious Julia Padavano in his freshman year at Northwestern University, it’s as if the world has lit up around him.

With Julia comes her tight-knit Chicago Italian family, including her three sisters: Sylvie is the dreamer, happiest with her nose in a book; Cecelia is a free-spirited artist; and Emeline patiently takes care of them all. With the Padavanos, William experiences a newfound contentment; every moment in their house is filled with loving chaos.

But then darkness from William’s past surfaces, jeopardizing not only Julia’s carefully orchestrated plans for their future, but the sisters’ unshakeable devotion to one another. The result is a catastrophic family rift that changes their lives for generations. Will the loyalty that once rooted them to be strong enough to draw them back together when it matters most?

An exquisite homage to Louisa May Alcott’s timeless classic, Little Women, Hello Beautiful is a profoundly moving portrait of what is possible when we choose to love someone not in spite of who they are, but because of it.

Meet the Trustees

MEET TRUSTEE: LOUISE BARNETT

Can you tell us about your background and what inspired you to become a library trustee?

I was an English major in college and also have an MS in English Education. I taught high school English in New York City before moving to Illinois. While completing my Illinois teacher certification I took a part time position in Youth Services at Indian Trails Library, and I was hooked on working in a library. When I retired as the School Liaison Librarian for the Skokie Public Library, I felt that I could give back to the community and use my years of library experience by becoming a library trustee.

What do you believe is the most important role of a library in our community?

In today's world, libraries are community gathering places where everyone is welcome to meet, learn new skills and pursue personal interests. Surveys show that librarians are a trusted profession so our staff can provide a secure source of information on a variety of issues for community members.

Can you share a memorable experience or achievement during your time as a trustee? I served on the Board of Trustees during our library construction project and was thrilled that our beautiful building was chosen to be part of the ALA Library Design Showcase and was also chosen for the cover of the ILA Reporter, a statewide magazine. I am proud of our building which looks as welcoming today as it did in 2017 when it opened. We added more study rooms, a makerspace, and a teen area as well as a dynamic Youth Services Department.

What are some of the biggest challenges libraries face today, and how do you think we can address them?

First, libraries stand at the forefront of the freedom of speech and freedom to read movements. They serve diverse communities, and it is important that the needs of these communities be met. One group should not determine what others should read or learn. Second, there are many financial challenges today as costs are increasing for materials and programming. Our board is very mindful of the way in which taxpayers' money is being spent and work hard to keep our library financially sound.

What are your hopes and goals for the future of the library? We are in the process of developing our new strategic plan to realize the hopes and goals for our library. This will be determined by

community and staff surveys and many focus groups. The board of trustees need to prioritize the wishes of our library members and staff as Indian Trails Library changes and grows in the future. New technology, AI and different mediums of communication will all undoubtably play a part.

What was your favorite book as a child? As an adult?

As a child I remember the first "big" book I read by myself was "Charlotte's Web." It made me cry and I began to realize the powerful emotions books can evoke. As an adult, I love everything that Ann Patchett writes. "Tom Lake" was one of my favorites as was "The Dutch House" and "Bel Canto." I found it very interesting that Ann Patchett and my favorite children's author Kate Di Camillo are close friends.

What is your favorite area of the main library or Branch?

Early literacy was the main focus of mine when I ran for the library board. I love to walk through the Youth Services Department and see parents reading to their kids, little ones involved in art projects and creative play, and members finding treasured books to take home.
