Meet the Trustees

MEET TRUSTEE: VICKI BABA

Can you tell us about your background and what inspired you to become a library trustee?

I have spent my career in human resources, most recently as Director of HR for the Illinois Student Assistance Commission. My education includes a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Secondary Education and a Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.). Reading has always been an important part of my life. I grew up in Chicago and both my parents worked, so I spent quite a bit of after-school time and summers at my local library. When I was considering retirement, I worried about how I would fill my time, and I wanted to add something to my life that would allow me to continue to utilize the business and management skills I acquired in my career. I joined a library board meeting at Indian Trails Public Library and immediately knew that I wanted to be a part of this organization.

What do you believe is the most important role of a library in our community?

Libraries are a magical place where you can read, study, meet, create, play, learn and simply be part of

a community. I believe that our library can serve the community by providing a safe place to our residents of all ages. Where else can you see the same joy in the eyes of a child proudly carrying a book home to read for the first time, as you see in the eyes of a senior who has been assisted in using a computer for the first time? That’s the magic.

Can you share a memorable experience or achievement during your time as a trustee?

I have really enjoyed learning about the workings of the library from the other side. I am no longer simply a user of the library, but now I can contribute in a small way to the Library. Achievement? It has to be the absolute honor of being chosen this year to serve as President of the library board.

What are some of the biggest challenges libraries face today, and how do you think we can address them?

As with many organizations, it is a continuing challenge to stay current with our changing community needs. And it is our hope to stay steps ahead to meet those needs. Our library staff is so creative and forward thinking, and it is their complete commitment to this library that will allow us to continue addressing future challenges.

What are your hopes and goals for the future of our library? It is my hope that Indian Trails will continue to grow with the community and always serve as an important resource to everyone who enters our doors.

Our strong outreach efforts will let our neighbors know who we are and what we offer. Our variety of interesting and exciting programs, that teach or entertain, will engage users of the Library.

What was your favorite book as a child? As an adult?

Stories that took place in a different part of the world always appealed to me as a child. Name a favorite?

Too many to remember. As for adult reading–after grammar school, high school, undergrad and grad school reading, I have settled into light fiction at this point in my life. I still enjoy books that take me somewhere else in the world. Armchair traveler. Name a favorite? I’ve been reading several books by Kristin Hannah. "The Four Winds" was wonderful.

What is your favorite area of the main library or branch? I enjoy the vastness of the main library and the compactness of the Branch. I like that the Shhh… zone has shrunken over the years, and each area of the library has its own personality. Favorite area? They are all favorites in their own way.
