Hornets --- HEAT

Josh Richardson’s evolution into a two-way force has coincided with the best stretch of the season for the Miami HEAT. Richardson has been dynamic since the beginning of December, averaging a robust 16 points, 3.7 rebounds, 3.3 assists, and 1.3 steals per game. He’s done this on a very efficient 49.5 percent shooting from the field and 45.4 percent accuracy from beyond the arc. Since December, Miami has leapt into the upper echelon of the Eastern Conference thanks to the steadiness of J-Rich. Richardson’s willingness to play multiple roles for a versatile HEAT team that currently has eight players averaging over 10 points per game has elevated the team, especially in big moments. J-Rich has responded well to having the ball in his hands more in crunch time situations, most memorably rewarding the team’s trust during the January 7th matchup against the Utah Jazz. Richardson’s go-ahead layup secured a 103-102 victory for Miami and was the most obvious sign that the 24-year-old is making a leap. “He’s ready for the next jump, the jump is ready for him,” coach Erik Spoelstra said about Richardson. “It’s now a matter of when.” “He’s taken leaps and bounds,” guard Wayne Ellington added. “He’s become more and more confident by the game. He’s maturing. He’s starting to find his game and understand his game and he’s tough to guard. He’s going to continue to get better. The sky’s the limit for J-Rich.” Richardson has spent most of the season starting at the small forward position, but has also spent plenty of time manning both the point and shooting guard positions. He has become the perfect representation of Miami’s “positionless” ideology and his willingness to wear many different hats over the course of a game is best reflected in the fact that he’s led the team in minutes played and has yet to miss a game this season. “He’s getting more opportunities right now, of course,” said Ellington. “But he’s showing exactly what he’s capable of. He’s leading us, period. He’s been leading us.” Richardson’s been getting plenty of attention for his offensive exploits, but it’s important to remember that he’s shown himself to be one of the league’s best defenders since the regular season began. The chasedown blocks and lunging steals that have become a nightly occurrence are a fine display of Richardson’s supreme athletic ability, but his attention to detail has pushed him to elite heights. “People should hopefully start recognizing Josh Richardson’s impact on the defensive end,” Coach Spoelstra said. “He’s an all-NBA defensive talent. He’s doing it every single night. And now he’s just starting to emerge on the other side of the floor and really gain confidence.” STATISTICS AS OF JANUARY 23, 2018*

BEYOND THE COURT

MIAMI IS US.

WE ARE

.

BY LORRIE-ANN DIAZ SENIOR DIRECTOR OF THE HEAT GROUP BUSINESS COMMUNICATIONS

For over 17 years, I’ve walked the hallowed hallways of AmericanAirlines Arena in a cloud of grateful bliss. It’s not because of the three Miami HEAT championship rings I’ve earned during my tenure (although bling is clearly a huge plus); it’s not because of the funny, creative and gifted people with whom I work (although they absolutely make the job festive as hell); nor is it because of our unique culture, which is hard to describe, but includes everything from the occasional 3:00 p.m. musical jamming sessions in the center of our offices to a “Best Hair Day Award” bestowed quarterly upon the man or woman with the sexiest tresses. 20

Hornets --- HEAT

It’s because I’m an openly lesbian woman working for a men’s professional basketball team—and no one cares. And when I say no one cares, I mean being an out lesbian in my workplace is a non-issue in all the ways that don’t matter and a valuable asset in all the ways that do. I’m exceedingly lucky, spoiled even. I’m also a Miami native, so I derive an incredible amount of pride working for my hometown team and that’s because, at a granular level, this organization believes that Miami is us and we are Miami. We welcome everyone to AmericanAirlines Arena because we champion the diversity that truly makes the Magic City, well, magical. Diversity has deep and far-reaching roots here at the HEAT. It is represented in our community outreach efforts, events and programs; in our human resources practices and policies; in our sales, marketing and public relations undertakings; and especially in our own corporate and cultural DNA.

WE ARE THE MOST DIVERSE ORGANIZATION IN THE MOST DIVERSE SPORT IN THE WORLD. As we say in basketball, numbers don’t lie. Statistically speaking, our full-time workforce is: • 70% minority • 33% women Extending the group to include our part-time workforce, those numbers rise: • 86% minority • 40% women Additionally: • 58% of vice president posts are held by minorities • 27% of vice president posts are held by women • 60% of managerial level positions are held by minorities • 34% of managerial level positions are held by women For the HEAT, it’s not unusual to see a woman serve as our lead counsel, a Latino pilot our retail operations, or a lesbian (that’s me!) direct our communications strategy. We believe that a diverse leadership team begets a diverse staff, and results in an organization in which inclusion is virtually a given. On January 8, 2018, at the NBA’s annual sales and marketing meetings, approximately 300 HEAT staffers quietly stormed the JW Marriott’s ballroom right here in downtown Miami joining President of The HEAT Group’s Business Operations, Eric Woolworth, on stage to collect the NBA’s inaugural Inclusion Leadership Award—for our lengthy history and ongoing commitment to diversity and inclusion. And in the world of professional sports, where winning is valued above all else, it felt both triumphant and humbling to receive said recognition, in Woolworth’s words, “not for what we do, but for who we are.”

30 SEASONS AS HEAT FAMILY MEMBERS

FAVORITE HEAT MEMORY OF ALL-TIME: As #HEATLifers since day one, we are filled with memories that stretch back to the old Miami Arena and our first team. Our seats were particularly memorable in the Arena as they were on the aisle right behind Tim Hardaway’s wife, who sat right behind Alonzo Mourning’s wife. We still see players from the first team, like Rony Siekaly and Glen Rice, coming to mingle and cheer on the HEAT today. We know firsthand that once a HEAT fan, always a HEAT fan.

FAVORITE ASPECT OF BEING A MEMBER: #HEATLifer brings with it a host of opportunities to participate in activities with the HEAT players as well as with the greater HEAT organization and community. We love meeting the players personally (though it makes me feel very short). Our home is graced with the photos of HEAT players surrounded by us, intermingled with photos of our six children and seven grandchildren.

YOU COME TO A HEAT GAME AND YOU’RE GETTING HUNGRY. WHAT’S YOUR GO-TO ARENA FOOD HOT SPOT? We can be seen above DJ Irie’s head eating our bottomless popcorn. You just can’t beat that for an evening well spent! 44

AREA SPOTLIGHT

Design District A PRODUCT OF TEAMWORK BY WES GOLDBERG

When the Miami HEAT are at their best, they are represented by teammates who combine their individual talents to create something beautiful and, ultimately, successful. About a 10 minute drive north from AmericanAirlines Arena, Miami’s Design District is no different. Just like the HEAT get efforts from their ball handlers, wings and big men, the Design District is made up of contributions from art curators, high-fashion businesses, artists and architects. It’s a place where luxury brands have the space to do business and architects can turn their sketches into reality. But just like a basketball team’s success, this district from Northeast 38th Street to Northeast 42nd Street wasn’t born overnight. This part of Buena Vista was given its name in the 1980’s but by the early 1990’s the area had become decayed and desolate. Meanwhile, South Beach was bustling and Miami was growing. Enter Craig Robins, a developer who bought up real estate, persuaded businesses to open their doors, and helped establish Design Miami, an art show related to the annuel Art Basel fair. By the early 2000’s, the Design District was born. As you walk the picturesque streets canopied by rooftop gardens, you’ll see the glimmer of such luxury brands as Christian Louboutin, Cartier, Fendi, Gucci, Maison Martin Margiela, Dior Homme, Saint Laurent, Tom Ford and Versace, among others. The Design District is truly a first of its kind--the first to combine art and luxury shopping in such a way that it creates a rich neighborhood experience. An evolution of South Florida’s high-end shopping malls and the bustling marketplaces of New York, Boston and San Francisco. It’s a place where Louis Vuitton can open shop, a real estate mogul with an eye for art can make his mark, and an architecture student can design an eyecatching alleyway (a true story). Miami, known for its edge, vibrant culture, eye for vanity and Art Deco, is the perfect home for such a place. It’s influence is felt across the world, and has led to design districts popping up in places like London, Buenos Aires and Johannesburg. Miami’s Design District represents an idea worth spreading, and a culture worth sharing. 50
