BET ON YOURSELF THEN

DOUBLE DOWN BY AZAM MASOOD

Over the course of last season, no shot proved to be too big for guard Dion Waiters. Whenever the HEAT needed him most, his “Philly cheese swagger” would shine through. This was perhaps best exemplified by Miami’s pulse-pounding victory against the eventual NBA Champion Golden State Warriors last January. The crowd’s deafening roar was in full force thanks to Dion’s three-pointer from the heavens that gave Miami a 105-102 victory. Miami’s fourth consecutive win would soon balloon to 13 in a row as the team completed one of the most remarkable turnarounds in NBA history last year. The dynamic Waiters has quickly found a home in Miami, thanks to his penchant for late-game heroics and backcourt chemistry with fellow guard Goran Dragic. Last season, Waiters averaged 15.8 points and a career high 4.3 assists per game while shooting a career high 39.5 percent from three-point territory. Added ball handling responsibilities

We’re not going anywhere. That’s why I always say, ‘Bet on yourself THEN double down.

allowed Dion to demonstrate the full breadth of his talent as a playmaker, and the clutch moments piled on as the season went along. His individual stats don’t tell the full story. With Dion Waiters in the lineup, Miami went 27-19 (23-5 during their 30-11 run) and just 14-22 without him. His contributions as a slasher, shooter, defender, and clutch player elevated Miami to greater heights and they will need the 25-year old to build on last year so that Miami can reach the postseason. “I know we fell one game short of the playoffs, and it kills me,” said Waiters to The Players Tribune in April. “If I hadn’t gone down with an injury, I think we all know where we’d be right now. But you know what? The run this season was magical. Our fans sold out the arena every night, even when we were left for dead.” With most of the same group back in uniform for the 2017 season, Waiters is confident that the team can replicate last season’s second-half success over the course of the entire year. Miami has great depth at the guard position, with multiple players capable of initiating the offense. Nonetheless, whenever the game is on the line, Waiters has proven he’ll step up to the challenge. BEHIND THE NAME When Miami was awarded an NBA franchise to begin play in 1988, we were still without a name! Team officials decided to get the South Florida community involved and held a write-in contest for fans to help name the team. Among the 5,000+ entries submitted were names like Sharks, Barracudas, Bagel Dunkers, Stone Crabs, Sunspots, Sunbathers, Flamingos, Palm Trees, Beaches, Heat, Suntan, Shade, Tornadoes and Floridians. “The Heat was it,” said Miami HEAT founding partner, Zev Buffman. “When you think of Miami, that’s what you think of.”

HEAT DANCER

MEET

ARIANA If you had to describe what’s in your purse, what would we find? Wallet, gum, glasses, a pen, earphones and my phone charger. Outside of dance, what do you do currently? I’m a full-time college student and I like to bake in my free time. One thing people don’t know about you? I can’t sleep with socks on. The last TV series you watched? Grey’s Anatomy. Least favorite workout? Burpees. Last gift you bought someone? A hat and an iPhone case. Name a future goal you’re working towards. I want to follow in my mom’s career path and become a Physician Assistant for a dermatologist. You’re stranded on an island. Name three things you would bring. A reliable companion with their list of three things. Why is being a HEAT Dancer so important to you? Being a HEAT Dancer allows me to do what I love while representing my city at the same time.

MEET Kenneth & Marcella Henry

12 SEASONS as HEAT Family Members 8 seasons Favorite HEAT memory of all-time? In the fading seconds of the 2013 HEAT season, Chris Bosh catches an offensive rebound, passes to Ray Allen and shuffles his feet just enough to get behind the three-point line. He fires! BANG! What a memory! Favorite aspect of being a HEAT Family Member: I love going to the Arena and interacting with the friends you make in your section. This includes the attendants, our bartender at Section 106 (Grey Goose) and of course all the entertainment, including the HEAT Street Band! You’re at a game and you get hungry. What’s your go-to arena food hot spot? My favorite food at the Arena is a toss-up between the shrimp lo mein and the chicken and waffles. 44

HEAT BACK TO SCHOOL T H ROWBACK EDI TI O N Now that school is in full swing, we’d like to take a look back at an event that made us smile. On August 21, 2017, students of Jesse J. McCrary Jr. Elementary School were welcomed back to school in the greatest way possible. With the help of the Alert Today Alive Tomorrow program, HEAT rookies Bam Adebayo, Matt Williams Jr. and Derrick Walton Jr. helped pass out a number of awesome school supplies to students, getting them ready and excited for the 2017-18 school year! “To be able to help welcome the younger kids on their first day is a blessing,” said Derrick Walton Jr. “We’re here to remind them of how vital education is and how a good education will serve you for a lifetime.”
