By Jeff Craney

YEARS. It’s hard to believe.

I can remember walking into a Coconut Grove office looking for an internship with the “new NBA team” just so I could graduate from college. Seems like yesterday, but it was 30 years ago. I often joke that I was born at the HEAT, mainly to remind people that I’m not old. The truth is, professionally, I was born and raised at the HEAT and became the kid that never left home. I’m not alone, as I have many co-workers and friends that are #HEATLifers. It speaks volumes about how great this organization is. Family, culture and diversity are words used to describe the HEAT organization, and I have 30 years that says those are authentic values. It starts at the top with the Arison family leading this franchise and it permeates the entire organization. As we begin year 30, I’d like to reflect on some memorable Miami HEAT opening nights. November 5, 1987. An historical date debuting a new team in the NBA and a new experience for South Florida. I was in ticket sales by day and during games I was working as a courtside coordinator. Frankly, I didn’t have a clue what that meant. Everything was a new experience. I remember renting a tuxedo for our “Black Tie” Opening Night. Mostly, I remember the night before the first game. The staff was hand rolling and rubber banding 15,000 posters to be given to fans as they entered the Miami Arena. It was hardly glamorous, but it was team bonding before team bonding was a thing. One thing was clear: we all knew we were at a special place at a unique time, and appreciated the moment that was the first Miami HEAT game. In the early years, we produced elaborate opening night pre-game shows, and as Director of Game Operations, the ceremony was one of my responsibilities. To start the 1990-91 season, our pre-game show was right out of Ringling Brothers. We had a problem with the indoor fireworks that left the court covered in residue. The game officials declared the court unsafe and sent the players back in the locker rooms until it was cleaned. It seemed like an eternity. In our business

and in my position, that kind of mishap is disastrous. I didn’t think I would survive the night, but the HEAT won the game and, thankfully, I lived to see another day. Opening the 1995-96 season—Pat Riley’s presence. Enough said. The franchise changed when Riley arrived that summer. The Miami HEAT was suddenly a contender, elite and respected. A new culture had taken root. Coach talked of championship parades from day one. Acquiring Alonzo Mourning just before opening night solidified this exciting new chapter in HEAT history and, like many others, I was thrilled. Of course, the most anticipated opening night was 2010-11, the first game of the Big Three era. The hype was exciting and unparalleled. We planned a new player introduction sequence that featured the starting lineup standing under dramatic lighting, instead of the traditional running off the bench. The producer of the broadcast was yelling at me all day to change our plans. To our team’s credit, we stuck with our plan, and the intros were perfect for that extraordinary game. And that night, I also experienced a brush with pop music greatness. Pitbull performed a pre-game concert on the XFINITY East Plaza. When I was escorting Pitbull from the dressing room to the stage, someone from his entourage pointed at me and told Mr.305, “That’s what you’re going to look like when you get older.” “Excuse me!” I retorted, only mildly offended. “Let’s get the show started,” Pitbull wisely said, and he then started the show. In all my years here, I can tell you one thing: numbers don’t lie. More than 2,500 games. Five NBA Finals. Three rings. Thousands of moments. Endless memories. Proud #HEATLifer. Thirty years. It’s hard to believe.

Jeff Craney is the Vice President of Marketing for the Miami HEAT. He was the team’s first official hire on July 1, 1987.

GORAN “

DRAGIĆ By Wes Goldberg

During HEAT media day, Hassan Whiteside called out from across the room. “Goran, give ‘em the shoulder! MVP! Show ‘em the MVP shoulder!” Goran Dragic was in the middle of a photo shoot. Typical of Dragic, it was mostly business. Typical of Whiteside, he found the fun in an otherwise routine event. It may have also been the unveiling of a new nickname for The Dragon—“MVP.”

Did you know? Dragic likes to drive his shoulder into defenders to create space near the rim. If he has a signature move, this is it.

Dragic spent the summer competing for Slovenia in the EuroBasket 2017 tournament, taking home a gold medal and MVP honors. In the final game against Serbia, Dragic and his shoulder dominated. He scored 35 points in 28 minutes. It was Slovenia’s first ever gold medal in any team sport. It’s a first for Dragic, too, who prior to this summer hadn’t been part of a championship team in the NBA or in international play. Head Coach Erik Spoelstra can tell his team what it takes—physically and mentally—to win a championship, but the experience is invaluable. “Now I fully understand what he means,” Dragic said. “You need to play through all those emotions, when you’re feeling bad, when you’re feeling good. This is probably one of the toughest wins in my career.” In the HEAT’s competitive locker room, winning MVP isn’t overlooked. “For him to bring that back for his country and then to win that MVP, it meant a lot to us as brothers in this locker room,” said HEAT teammate James Johnson. Dragic isn’t only the MVP of Slovenian basketball, he’s one of the most valuable players on the HEAT. “Right now, he’s the player that I think Spo relies on as much as some of the other guys,” said team president Pat Riley. “Or even more so.”

NBPA’s Teammate of the Year Award. How did that feel? It was easy for me to win Teammate of the Year Award because I was just being myself. My guys know me. They know they can call me at 3 a.m. with anything life or basketball related and I’ll be there. That’s just who I am.

You worked out with the younger guys a ton this summer? How was that? They keep me young. I have to understand that everything I do, I’m setting an example and these guys are watching. When we didn’t have the opportunity to train together, I made sure to send them videos of workouts. We actually started a group chat for all of our workouts so we could stay connected.

One word to describe the upcoming season. Promising. There’s a lot of promise this season with the team we have and how we finished last year.

Anything you want to say to HEAT fans? Stick around. It’s going to be a long, amazing season full of ups and downs. The DNA of this team is going to make it very entertaining. These guys are built for this and ready. There’s no other training camp that I’ve ever been more excited about other than this one. The preparation with these guys—I’ve never seen anything like it. DANCER

MEET

ADRIANNA My dream dance gig: To dance with Beyoncé of course! We already know she SLAYS. She has the most talented dancers and always brings fire to the stage. I would love to be a part of that movement. My least favorite gym equipment: The treadmill. I don’t like to run. Cardio is not my thing. My go-to hype up song: I don’t really have a hype song, but I do listen to worship music. It really allows me to be calm before I go out on the court and do my thing. One thing people may not know about me: I’m a preacher! I have a heart to encourage people and share my faith. My dream vacation spot: Bora Bora. I would want to be relaxing inside those villas on the water. Online shopping or going to the mall: Online shopping. The only downside is you can’t try it on! The last text in my phone was to: My friend Yariana.

XO XO

Three things I can’t live without: Jesus, my family and music. One thing I’d like to say to all HEAT fans: Continue to stick with us! One thing about Miami fans is that we’re loyal. We stay true to our team.

B E YO N D T H E C O U R T

On September 15, our Miami HEAT teamed up with the Golden State Warriors and FedEx to do something pretty amazing. Due to the severe weather from Hurricane Irma, many of our adorable furry friends were either abandoned or displaced from their homes. With the help of HEAT Head Coach, Erik Spoelstra, HEAT Captain, Udonis Haslem, and other HEAT staffers, the group was able to airlift over 100 pre-Hurricane Irma pets on a FedEx Express MD – 10 in route to no-kill shelters in Oakland, California. “There’s a lot of devastation, but this is when you see people at their best,” said Spoelstra. These animals were met in Oakland, California where Golden State Warriors players Zaza Pachulia and Jordan Bell, Assistant Coach, Willie Green and Warriors staffers greeted the animals and placed them in shelters in the surrounding area. Now, these animals will get a second chance at finding their FURever homes and will have the opportunity to be adopted into a loving family! To make a donation for hurricane relief efforts, please visit: YouCaring.com/HEAT.
