BACK AT BY: AZAM MASOOD

YOUR MIAMI HEAT IS BACK! The 29th season of Miami HEAT basketball features plenty of new faces ready to join a dynamic young core featuring Hassan Whiteside, Justise Winslow, Josh Richardson, Tyler Johnson and Goran Dragic. The new additions include crafty scorer Dion Waiters, sharpshooters Luke Babbitt and Wayne Ellington and high-flying forwards Derrick Williams and James Johnson. Together, this group will battle it out in an ever-competitive Eastern Conference. On and off the court, this young, hungry group welcomes the veteran leadership of Udonis Haslem, the longest tenured HEAT player in franchise history, now entering his 14th season with the club. The long-time team captain has seen Playoff action in 11 of his 13 NBA seasons and brings a steely championship presence to the locker room. Haslem embraces the challenge of leading this young group of players the same way he embraces every one of his franchise-leading 5,665 rebounds. “I embrace the challenge,” said Haslem. “I embrace the opportunity. I’ve been challenged in so many different ways throughout my life that I just look at this season and I’m like, ‘Why not?’ Why not another challenge? Why not another opportunity to show people that I can lead and be a part of a successful environment?”

10

Hornets --- HEAT

IT “I EMBRACE THE CHALLENGE, I EMBRACE THE OPPORTUNIT Y ” - UDONIS HASLEM, TEAM CAP TAIN The environment and culture that the HEAT has cultivated in 29 unbelievable seasons is what attracted much of the talent that Miami has acquired, and Coach Spoelstra is ready to utilize the players’ unique talent by playing position-less basketball. “The HEAT is the perfect opportunity for me to showcase the things that I do well,” said forward Derrick Williams. “This summer, I felt like that was the best spot for me to go, with the way that I play. Coach Spoelstra and Pat Riley have a history of developing players and other people, like myself, that haven’t found that right opportunity yet. They look at players, like myself, who thrive in the position-less basketball.” Playing fast with wings who can run the floor, spread the defense with shooters, and switch on the perimeter are all prerequisites in the 2016-17 NBA landscape. With ten of its players on the roster standing at or over six-footsix, Miami’s well equipped to compete. And, the last line of the defense is the tallest of them all, Hassan Whiteside. The talented seven-footer, who led the NBA in blocks last season, will now shoulder an even larger role on both ends of the floor. “This is the first time in my life I’ll be on the same team for more than two years,” said Whiteside. “We’ve got a lot to prove. It took me 27 years to get here. I came into the locker room here from day one thinking that this could be my moment. What would be the point if I stopped now?”

A BIT OF THIS, AND A BIT OF THAT WITH

JUSTISE

WINSLOW IF YOU COULD EXCEL AT A WATER SPORT, WHICH WOULD IT BE? Water Polo, hands down. WHAT ’S YOUR FAVORITE FAMILY TRADITION? Well, it’s not really a tradition. But, for my mom’s 50th birthday, we went to Turks and Caicos and that was amazing. IF YOU COULD GO BACK TO ANY POINT IN YOUR LIFE , WHERE WOULD YOU GO? I’d go back to Greece. I loved experiencing the different towns, the way they were set up was unlike anything I’ve ever seen. Santorini, the city with the bright white buildings and blue roofs, was pretty cool, too. WOULD YOU RATHER LEARN TO FLY A PL ANE OR SAIL A BOAT? Sail a boat, definitely. I feel like that is way more enjoyable. When you’re in a plane, you can’ t move around and hang out. WHAT ’S THE MOST BIZARRE FOOD YOU ’ VE EATEN? When I was in Louisiana, I ate alligator. WOULD YOU RATHER TAKE A ROCKET TO OUTER SPACE OR A SUBMARINE TO THE DEEPEST OCEAN TRENCHES? Tough one, but I’d probably take the rocket. 18

Hornets --- HEAT

IF YOU WERE THROWING A PART Y, WHAT WOULD BE THE MAIN DISH YOU ’ D SERVE? I’d probably start with some ceviche then a nice caesar salad and clam chowder. After that, for the main course, I’d serve chicken - and -waffles and spaghetti and probably some jambalaya. And for dessert, there would be banana pudding and some cookie cake. Finally, some tea…a nice green tea just to cap it off. IF YOU WERE FORCED TO COOK , WHAT WOULD YOU MAKE? Cereal. I’m really trying to work on breakfast now. So, I’ve got eggs down. I’m working on pancakes and French toast. WHAT ’S YOUR FAVORITE CEREAL? Aw man…Fruity Pebbles, Lucky Charms, and Captain Crunch Berries. But that’s not really all of them. APART FORM BASKETBALL , WHAT ARE YOU INTO RIGHT NOW? I’m really into art and different kinds of music. I’ve been listening to underground rap…people that are trying to make it. King of Nothing from Houston. Captain Steez, Pouya, Denzel Curry…all of those guys have great stuff out.

COACH ERIK SPOELSTRA

IS A KID’S GAME.

More often than not, everyone starts at such a young age. I started with my dad when I was five or six. I had one of those little hoops you hang up in your room. Then, I got a bit older, and we had a basket outside the house. So, when you’re able to find a profession with a kid’s game…I don’t know if there is anything better than that.

GET FIT WITH T BODYWEIGHT UPPER BODY COMPLEX ASSISTANT STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING COACH ERIC FORAN GIVES TIPOFF READERS THE INSIDE SCOOP INTO IMPROVING YOUR UPPER BODY. You can still get a good, balanced workout without going to the gym. Here is an upper body and core complex that works all of the major muscles of the upper body as well as the abdominal muscles, all using only bodyweight.

PUSH UPS

X 10-15

Get into position on your hands and toes, with your hands under your shoulders and your body in a straight line. Do not stick your butt up or let your hips sag down.

TIP

Lower your body, then press back up to the starting position.

If the push up position is uncomfortable on your wrists, you can use either push up bars or dumbbells to change the angle and take stress off your wrists.

We make sure to balance pressing and pulling movements. Many gym goers have a tendency to focus on the Pressing movements because they work the muscles that you see in the mirror, but pulling movements are important for maintaining shoulder health, back health, and proper posture.

You can use varying grips and grip widths in order to change the angle of the exercise. If you are unable to perform a pull up, you can have a partner help you by holding your feet and assisting you in the movement.

PLANK

X :30

Get into position on your forearms and toes. Keeping your body in a straight line, lock in and hold for time. Do not let your butt raise up or your hips sag toward the ground, keep your body straight and your abs engaged.

We are a versatile team with guys who can play multiple positions. I think in today’s NBA that’s a necessity. We have a lot of good pieces. Right now, we’re still so new, so everyone is focused on learning each other and developing chemistry.
