It was all smiles at City Commissioner Scott Newton’s Re-election headquarters. Over 100 friends and supporters turned out and watched as the voting results were tabulated. Newtown won re-election with 26% of the vote.

Wilton Manors

It was high fives and “Cheers” at the Justin Flippin Victory Celebration held at The Naked Grape Wine Bar & Tapas on Wilton Drive. Flippin “Shocked the World” of Wilton Manors as he reclaimed his City Commission seat in what many called one of the best run campaigns in city history.

The Boys are Back in Town! Voters overwhelmingly re-elect Gary Resnick as Mayor

Scott Newton re-elected to City Commission • Justin Flippin returns to City Commission Three term Mayor of Wilton Manors, Gary Resnick won re-election fending off a strong challenge by local real estate agent and city activist Doug Blevins. Resnick garnered nearly 52% of the total vote (2335) with Blevins following up with 44% (1989) of the total vote tally. Boyd Corbin received 190 votes (4%). Resnick touted rising property values in Wilton Manors, a strong fiscal budget and a low crime rate during his campaign. The residents of Wilton Manors obviously agreed, returning Resnick, one of the United States most respected and renowned communications attorneys, back to city government. Resnick was first elected to Wilton Manors City Commission in 1998 and was first elected Mayor in 2008. Many voters, when asked why they decided to re-elect Resnick for a fourth term, stated that they were happy with the direction the city was headed in. Most voters said that he had done an excellent job as Mayor. Mayor Resnick thanked the citizens of Wilton Manors on Election Night: “Thank you to Wilton Manors for electing me to another term. It continues to be an honor and a privilege to represent our community. I also want to thank the many volunteers and supporters who helped me with my campaign! I pledge to continue the great progress we've made over the years I've served on the Commission and as Mayor." The citizens of Wilton Manors re-

He pledged to continue the great progress Wilton Manors has made over the years he has served. elected long time resident and native son Scott Newton to City Commission and, in what many local pundits called a mild upset, returned Justin Flippin to City Commission after a short hiatus. Flippin led all voters with 2,049 votes or 28% of the vote. Newton tallied up a strong 1.886 votes (26%) to gain reelection. Twelve year City Commissioner Ted Galatis lost his first election in Wilton Manors failing to regain his commission seat while finishing third with 1,393 votes (19%). West Side Association President Sal Torre finished fourth in the race for City Commission with 811 votes

Ruff night on the Drive Wilton Drive has a new Halloween tradition and the main attractions were the dogs of the first annual “Paws for Paws” Halloween Pet Parade. The parade started at Hagan Park at 7pm and went down Wilton Drive to Rumors Bar and Grill where a runway was set up for the big doggie costume contest. The event was attended by over 100 dogs in costume accompanied by their owners. The Pet Project for Pets, a local organization that helps the elderly and

disabled care for their pets sponsored the “Paws for Paws” twilight parade. There were dogs dressed as pumpkins, super heroes, sports stars and ghostly goblins. There was even a “pug”tato and the Devo dogs. The Right lane of Wilton drive was closed off as the costumed creatures walked, barked and showed off their dazzling designs for three quarters of a mile. The event will surely return to The Drive and grow even bigger next year.

Opinions, comments, rants & raves “One way” to fix parking problem All this talk about building parking garages and instituting a new business tax to solve the growing parking problems along Wilton Drive is a bunch of Gobble De Gook. The answer is very simple: One Way Streets with meter parking placed along on one side of the street. Key West has a million more tourists than Wilton manors yet they aren’t whining and complaining about parking. Why? They have one way streets with meter parking. What do they do in New York City? One way streets with meter parking. This obvious solution to the Drive’s parking problem has been proposed to City Commission before but they just ignore all the sensible solutions. It’s as if they just want to keep the status quo because it gets them re-elected. Well, wake up Mr. Mayor and Commissioners. Sitting on your hands and letting things roll along is what killed Wilton Drive in the 1980s. We need to think forward. If we don’t fix the parking problem soon, those empty stores will remain vacant and more restaurants and bars will file Chapter 11 only to be boarded up. Not because they had lousy food or poor service but because there was nowhere for their customers to park. If we make the side streets that line Wilton Drive One Way and add parking meters it will not only slow down the traffic but it will generate immediate revenue for the city.

Want to commit suicide? Drink some tap water in November We just received a notice in the mail that the Wilton Manors Drinking Water will be chlorinated during November. Yikes! Stock up on bottled water now. Skip that once a day shower. Don’t even think of rinsing your dog with the hose. I have been through this water chlorinating process many a times over the years and it is not a pretty sight. Not only does the water taste bad and smell bad but it is grossly discolored. And it is not safe! Health experts have stated that drinking chlorinated water may cause forms of cancer, including bladder, colon and rectal cancer. Many health officials are correlating the chlorinating by-products, also known as trihalomethanes (THM's) with cancer. Most THM's are formed in drinking water when chlorine reacts with naturally oc-

curring substances such as decomposing plant and animal materials. T h e P re s i d e n t ' s C o u n c i l o n Environmental Quality states that "there is increased evidence for an association between cancer and the consumption of chlorinated drinking water There are new advanced ways to disinfect our drinking water rather than the use of chlorine. There are new gas cleansing systems, filtration systems and even ultraviolet lighting disinfecting. But since we buy our “Over Priced” tap water from Fort Lauderdale and have never invested in our own city water system, I guess we’re at the mercy of Publix and hope that they keep plenty of purified water in stock this month.

We need 9-1-1 for 9-1-1

The story you are about to hear, is true….The names have been changed to protect the innocent… What good is Neighborhood Watch if no one is listening? On a Thursday evening in September, my wife and I decided to pack up the family and head over to Primanti Brothers on Oakland Park Boulevard for family pizza night. As we were getting in the car we noticed three scraggly teens walking along our street, creeping into our neighbors driveways and looking into windows of homes. We called the Wilton Manors Police. But what we got was the Broward County Regional Dispatch Office. I gave them the street address where the teens were lurking and waited in my car. We waited and waited. 20 minutes passed. The suspicious teens were still roving the streets. I called police dispatch again. I gave them our address and described the teens again. I then, frustrated that no squad car had arrived yet, decided to drive around and LOOK FOR AN OFFICER! I spotted the Wilton Manors Accident Investigaton Car a half a mile away and I asked him to alert the police about what was going on in my neighborhood. He did. Three minutes later the police showed up and combed our neighborhood. No doubt we have the best police department around but what good does it do if we can’t contact them when there’s suspicious activity in my neighborhood? I brought my concerns about the county dispatch system to city hall and it seems that this is not an uncommon problem. Due to budgetary concerns, Wilton Manors no longer has its own dispatcher after hours and on weekends. Every call is patched through the Broward County 9-1-1 system. These dispatch offices are in Sunrise or Coconut Creek. These people are not familiar with Wilton Manors and it’s a strong possibility that a wrong address may be issued to the patrol officers on duty. Now, I’m no budget expert but it seems that a full time dispatcher at our police department is necessary. Go ahead and raise my property taxes. This problem must be solved before the next delay by the Broward 9-1-1 Dispatch System is for something far worse than three youths casing homes.

Making Wilton Drive less trashy 200 lbs. of trash and counting… I wanted to send a big time Shout-Out to Thomas Alford and the folks at Manic Art Designs for adopting Wilton Drive in the Adopt a Street Program. They have started a new program called ‘Clean The Drive’ and have enlisted volunteers to get out and pick up liter along Wilton Drive. On their first day “Cleaning the Drive” they collected over 200 pounds of trash and picked up over 2000 cigarette butts! Keeping The Drive clean is a much needed project that is long overdue. We all should get involved. I signed up to volunteer last month. You too can sign up at their facebook site Cleanthedrivewiltonmanors. Thank you, Mr. Alford for making Wilton Drive a more beautiful place. It’s nice to see a local business owner give back to the community. Keep up the good work.

— A Thankful Neighbor

Our Island waterways are filthy! Your paper’s editorial last month was dead on. Our waterways are filthy. I am an avid Kayaker and I cannot tell you how many plastic bottles, palm leaves and bags of garbage I see in our waters each week. This city has to do much more than their once a year volunteer waterway clean up day. If not soon, then we may really become the Venice “Italy” of America and see more trash floating in the canals than wildlife. A sporadic volunteer program will never work to keep our dirty waterways clean. Volunteers do this once a year and it seems to me that the program is completely ineffective. If the City is interested in attracting people to come here to kayak, canoe, and paddle board, a weekly cleanup program should be instituted immediately. The City of Deerfield Beach recently bought a pontoon boat that sets out on the waterways weekly and is manned by the city sanitation crew. The boat scoops up floating bottles and debris and keeps the waterways clean. It’s a win-win for both waterfront residents and attracting tourist. This has to be done now. "It's not all about The Drive".

Christmas in November?

It’s getting to look a lot like Christmas at The Yellow Orchid Gift Shop. Stop by The Yellow Orchid and you’ll get in the spirit of the holidays as soon as you walk in the door. From unique Christmas Décor to that hard to find gift, The Yellow Orchid Gift Shop at 1600 NE 26th Street in Wilton Manors is a must stop for all Islanders preparing to decorate their hut.

It was 1958 when Sandra Malmstrom’s parents walked into Pierce’s 5 &10 on Wilton Drive and purchased their seven year old daughter a pet turtle she named Bantom. They bought her the classic clear turtle pond with a plastic palm tree in the middle that Bantom would call home for many years. Sandra eventually moved to California and then to Hawaii with Bantom in tow. Believe it or not, Bantom the turtle passed away on September 30, 2014 at the age of 56.

Blast from the Past

Democracy Gone Wild BENJAMIN B. LITTLE Wilton Manors Historical Society

This November, we elect a Mayor and two Commissioners. Other than it may be a close election, there will be no drama. The election in November 1953 generated a lot of drama. The Wilton Oakland Sun newspaper had a five column headline “New Wilton Manors Council Split Wide Open.” “A new Wilton Manors City Council was ‘organized’ Tuesday night. It took less than two minutes for it to become the most disorganized ever seen in the Village Hall. There was a lot of tension about growth. The population in 1950 was about 900. By 1960, it was over 8,000. The power in town and most development were concentrated in six or seven individuals. James Dean and Dave Turner had been developing the east side of the City. Dean, as the Village Council President, had carried the papers to Tallahassee to incorporate as a City in June 1953. Turner had been the Village’s first Mayor. Dean had announced the development of Manor Gate, a 15 acre tract with 23 stores, a movie theater, and a 10 story office building with a rooftop restaurant. Also included was a new City Hall on land provided by Dean and Turner. This would have moved the focus of “down town” from Wilton

Drive to NE 26th Street just east of the FEC tracks. The land owners on Wilton Drive were not having it. There were ugly rumors that the offer for land for a new City Hall had secret “trick clauses.”

Mayor Perry Mickel was reelected. The Mayor did not have a vote on the City Council, but did have veto power. The Council was five people, elected for staggered terms. They selected a President and appointed each other police commissioner, road commissioner, et cetera. There was no city manager. Frank Starling was reelected to one of the three open seats on the Council. Clarence Riggs and Charles Saxer defeated incumbents Earle Middleton and James Dean for the other two open seats. All five members of the new council met for lunch on Monday, the day before the first council meeting, apparently to

bury some hatchets. Neither Starling nor incumbent J. Marvin Brown was invited to a later meeting at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday at incumbent Earl Gurney’s house - “Sunshine Laws,” anyone? At the Tuesday night council meeting, Saxer nominated Gurney for council president, seconded by Riggs. Brown nominated Starling. Starling nominated Brown. Stalemate. The city attorney, William G. Miller, ruled that Gurney would be president, as his was the only nomination that had been seconded. After much parliamentary maneuvering no one was appointed police commissioner or road commissioner. The article in the Wilton Oakland Sun ended: “It looked like a long winter might be ahead.” Their second meeting, on December 8, failed to achieve a compromise on police commissioner. The city charter allowed for the mayor to take over the appointment. Starling moved to do so, seconded by Riggs. Bickering continued about a location for the new city hall (and its size) until the new one was finally built on NE 21st Court in 1957. Please see the Wilton Manors Historical Society’s website online at www.WiltonManorsHistoricalSociety.org for more info on the City Commission. Our civic history is not dull. News & Views The EYE-Lander: Keeping an eye out for you

Does Wilton Manors need a Nuisance Law?

Maybe if you had the Neighbor from Hell! Imagine investing your life into your home. Upgrading, remodeling, and even adding an expensive addition on to your home for visiting friends from out of town. This is your retirement home, your nest egg. This is the place you plan on spending your golden years in. Visions of home values in Wilton Manors rising and rising and dreams your home value one day will double when you need to do that reverse mortgage. Then, out of the blue, a new neighbor moves in. Imagine your new neighbor starts advertising for roommates on Craig’s List…and imagine that in those “Roommate Wanted Ads” your new neighbor not only is offering a place to sleep but full frontal massages as well! Yikes! Before you know it, the three bedroom bungalow across the street has not one, not two, but 5 or 6 people living there. It’s a full frontal massage palace with non -stop noise, middle of the night parties and police cars with sirens blaring and pulling up at all hours of the night. Some Hollywood Producer must be filming a new National Lampoon Movie in the Island City, right?

Well, on NE 21st Court it’s a nightmare come true. Last week the Wilton Manors Authorities made their 30th visit since February to the home at 400

NE 21st Court. This time the police made an arrest for drug possession. Last week it was the arrest of a 6 time convicted felon for Aggravated Battery. This house has been the scene

for numerous domestic violence complaints, robbery complaints, code violations and even traffic violations. And all the police can do is respond to the calls. The Neighbor from hell can keep on allowing new ‘guests’ to rent space and the problems can continue. In Fort Lauderdale, continuing problems like these resulted in the formation of a Nuisance Abatement Board that hears complaints from citizens about unruly businesses, homes and apartment complexes. The Nuisance Abatement Board Purpose: Promote, protect, and improve the health, safety, and welfare of the citizens by imposing administrative fines and other non-criminal penalties in order to provide an equitable, expeditious, effective, and inexpensive method of enforcing ordinances under circumstances when a pending or repeated violation continues to exist. This board was created in response to complaints from citizens regarding drug dealing and other unlawful acts that disrupt the quality of life throughout Fort Lauderdale’s neighborhoods. It has been created to help the citizens of Ft. Lauderdale, neighborhood associations

and landlords in deterring illegal activity in their neighborhoods by utilizing Nuisance Abatement procedures. This board meets once a month and sends it recommendations on to the police department and city hall. They first send letters to property owners asking them politely to clean up their act. Will a nuisance law work? Just take at look at Beach Place on A1A. It had turned into a drug haven with numerous thugs hanging out performing criminal activities and, what once was a tourist attraction became a very scary place. The nuisance board placed warning signs at the property and had the police constantly patrolling the Beach Place grounds. After a couple of months the problems stopped and the tourists came back. The board has also straightened out drug infested apartment complexes where trouble lingered as well. It would be nice if Neighbors from Hell would act respectfully towards their neighbors, but, sadly that isn’t the case and maybe it’s time Wilton Manors considered instituting our own Nuisance Board. It’s one way to keep or town safe and secure.

to honor brunch’s etymology by starting with a “tiny bit of everything” breakfast warm-up and then moving strongly on to lunch — which I prefer. From the first meal side of things, Hobo’s offers good iterations of the usual suspects. So along with scrambled eggs (try ’em with a blast of kicky salsa), bacon and sausage links, Hobo’s got: homemade biscuits, a solid omelet station; thick and crispy, freshly made waffles , Eggs Florentine, roasted potatoes with sautéed peppers and onions plus, what I will call a little piece of heaven on Wilton Drive, Hobo’s Grand Marnier French Toast; and grits with shrimp and cheddar cheese which were worth my second and third trip to the buffet table. The flavorful and homemade lunchy stuff is also voluminous. You tongue will be wagging when you feast your eyes on the smothered pork chops, garlic chicken, Cajun catfish, Rosemary Garlic Chicken and a perfectly woked Oriental Veggie Stir Fry. Everything we tried at the Sunday brunch buffet was fresh and tasty. Hobo’s Grill is doing its best to make the easy, breezy and better-than-respectable

(11%). Lille Harris finished with 629 votes (9%) followed by Naomi Ruth Parker with 323 votes (4%) and Christopher Warning with 133 votes (2%). In a statement to voters Justin Flippin thanked everyone who supported his vision for the city. In a statement to all citizens, Flippin said “Wilton Manors is my home, and I understand our community challenges. In moving our city forward, we must strike the proper balance between preserving the heritage of our Island City and recognizing the need for a smart and developed growth strategy. A moderate and balanced approach to our city's future is one of the things I hope you'll allow me to bring to our city commission. As the votes were being tallied, Scott Newton said he was honored to

be one of the top vote getters for Wilton Manors City Commission. Newton thanked his family, friends and supporters for generously donating their time and energy into his reelection campaign. “I will continue to work hard for all the citizens of our city,” Newton said. All three winners of the 2014 election are promising a bright future for the Island City. But many tough governing questions will be on their plates as our city grows: The redevelopment of Dixie Highway, a possible train station, proposed housing developments, the homeless and vagrant troubles on the Westside, a possible parking garage, the revitalization of Andrews Avenue, traffic congestion concerns, a potential hotel being built, and what will be the future for The Drive?

Dining on the Drive

Oscar’s English Tea Room and Gift Shop O.K., Oscars is actually 150 feet off the Drive, but this wonderful little English Tea Room tucked away by the train tracks in the Shoppes of The Wilton Station is a great find. Oscar’s is an experience like no other in South Florida. It is well worth the trip and should not be missed. If you are planning to get together with friends for a relaxing and unusual lunch then Oscar’s is definitely the place. You will just fall in love with the Queen Elizabeth Tea Pots, the fine china and linen and, of course the owners, Kevin and Craig. They treat everyone that walks into their tea room like English Royalty. These guys may be the most fun, gracious and attentive hosts in town. To start our review, let’s talk tea. You will feel like you’ve been transported to England as you sip on Oscar’s delicious teas. The tea selection is fantastically diverse and, for tea lovers, is truly is off the tea charts. Whether your choice is green, black, chamomile, a blend, or something unique, they will have it. Our table became fans of their perfectly brewed lemon and ginger tea. We will be back for the tea again.

Owners Kevin and Craig invite you in for a taste of Old England right here in Wilton Manors. High Tea at Oscar’s is the latest afternoon craze in Wilton Manors. It’s quickly catching on for Bridal Showers, family

The food is superb. Stop by for tea for two and order lunch off the menu. You will not be disappointed if you try Oscar’s quiche of the day. They serve up a different quiche special every day. We had the ham and cheese quiche and the tomato quiche. Both were served warm and were just perfectly light and fluffy. This quiche is truly outstanding. It is so rare to find the perfect quiche. Oscar’s English tea Room has it. Oscar’s also has a daily salad special. But the number one experience at Oscar’s has to be the desserts. These ‘Made from Scratch’ English morsels are the perfect complement to any cup of tea. The fresh baked out of the oven scones were a gastronomical delight. These scones are soooo good and are

Desserts that will make you feel… Home for the Holidays

The best local holiday desserts What can I say about writing this article? When my editor asked me to find the best holiday desserts in the area I said “Twist my arm.” The thought of taste testing sweets across Ft. Lauderdale in search of the best homemade holiday delights could be the best investigative report any reporter has ever been asked to cover. Would I be bringing home to the Christmas dinner table: Pie or fresh baked cookies? Decisions, decisions… We had heard about the famous pecan pies baked by Cathy’s Creations located at The Over Easy Café on Oakland Park Boulevard in Wilton Manors so, pecan pie would be our first order on the holiday dessert tour. Was I transported onto some back road farm in Georgia? This pecan pie may be the best ever. Scrumptious, irresistible taste and a delicious filling that had me reaching for a second slice. There is no other pecan pie like this in South Florida. You must, must, mustmustmustmust try Cathy’s pecan pie creation this year. P.S… The Blueberry and Apple Crumb pies at Cathy’s Creations are not too shabby either. Not sure what she puts in her crumb pie topping but it was addicting. So it’s one pecan pie and one apple crumb pie baked by Cathy’s Creations on the table for this year’s family get to-

gether. Cathy’s Creations is located at The Over Easy Café at 318 East Oakland Park Boulevard in Oakland Park. Ordering in advance is highly recommended. 954561-1177.

and always delicious. A loaf of Holiday Stollen is just Yummmy! And Stollen will always bring a hearty “Wilkomen” from friends and relatives when you walk in the door. Their Black bread and Fruit and Nut Bread are pretty amazing as well. Follow your nose to The German Bread Haus at 311 East Commercial Boulevard in Oakland Park. 954- 491-4464.

✦✦✦✦✦✦ I certainly can’t stop by Aunt Dot’s house this holiday season without Christmas Cookies. And there’s only one spot in Broward County where you’ll find homemade Christmas Cookies just like Grand Mom used to bake: The Cookie Shop in Lauderdale by the Sea. Never heard of it? Well you’re missing the Cookie Boat because The Cookie Shop is celebrating their 50th year in the same location. That's a remarkable business accomplishment, especially in South Florida, but once you try their cookies you will understand why they’ve lasted so long. A bag of cookies (10-12 usually in each bag) runs you about $3.50. YES, only $3.50 and they use REAL ingredients and bake fresh every day. You can smell it as you walk up to the door, which is their only source of advertising!. Their Christmas cookies and traditional chocolate chip cookies are HEAVENLY. Owners John

and Julie have perfected the art of baking cookies. Their motto is “STRESSED spelled backwards is DESSERTS”! So a stop at The Cookie Shop is a must during the shopping stressed days preceding Christmas. The Cookie Shop is located at 234 Basin Drive in Lauderdale by the Sea. 954-776-0676. ✦✦✦✦✦✦ My Dad would never smile on Thanksgiving until someone walked through the door carrying fresh baked bread. He would have loved the breads baked at The German Bread Haus on Commercial Boulevard in Ft. Lauderdale. These fresh baked breads at The German Bread Haus are simply Wunderbar! All natural, all fresh baked

When it comes to cupcakes nobody does it better than Sweeter Days Bake Shop on Federal Highway. Deciding on a cupcake flavor here may give you a headache but once you bring these mini morsels home for the holiday you will be all smiles. Sweeter Days has a salted caramel cupcake and a key lime coconut cupcake that is simply stupendous. You can order an assortment box of homemade cupcakes as well. One for each personality in the family: Strawberries & Cream for Granny, German Chocolate for Dad, The Malted Milk Ball cupcake for Sis and a a Nutella Swirl for Mom. You can’t go wrong in this cupcake heaven. Sweeter Days is located in the Plaza Del Mar Shopping Center, 1497 North Federal Highway in Ft. Lauderdale. 954-396-3979.

Over the Bridge Dining Out with “The Ft. Lauderdale Foodie”

d.b.a. café and wine bar THE FT. LAUDERDALE FOODIE One day , on my way back to my car after shopping at Encore Interiors , The Fort Lauderdale Foodie walked past this little place just across Federal Highway called the d.b.a. Café. I took a peek in the window and must admit, I was impressed with the décor. Looked like an old New York Pub in Chelsea I used to frequent: Wooden tables, brick walls, chalk board specials... so very Lower Manhattan. The menu looked inviting so I made reservations. What the Ft Lauderdale Foodie found was a new ‘Four Fork’ restaurant just around the corner from Wilton Manors. We have visited this restaurant twice. On both occasions, we were greatly impressed with both the food

Vivian’s Poinsettia Heights Holiday Walnut Berry Bites Non stick cooking spray 2-½ cups all-purpose flour 1 cup (2 sticks) cold, unsalted butter cut ¼ cup confectioners’ sugar ¼ teaspoon salt 1-½ cups Karo light corn syrup 4 eggs 1 cup sugar 3 tablespoons unsalted melted butter 2 cups fresh or thawed frozen cranberries (coarsely chopped) 1 cup chopped walnuts 1 cup white chocolate chips

Pre heat oven to 350 degrees, lightly coat a 12 ½ by 171/2 by 1 inch baking pan with non stick spray. In a large bowl, Beat, flour, butter, confectioner’s sugar and salt a medium speed until mix resembles coarse crumbs. Press firmly and evenly into pan. Bake 20 minutes or until golden brown. In a large bowl beat Karo syrup, eggs, sugar and butter until well blended. Stir in the cranberries and walnuts. Spread mixture evenly over hot crust. Sprinkle white chocolate chips over the top. Place in oven to bake 25 to 30 minutes or until set. Cool completely before serving. You’ll have 4 dozen fresh baked holiday goodies that will bring a smile to the face of every sitting by the tree.

and the service. This is a new hidden gem for us food lovers. Everything we have tried on the menu, which changes often, is amazingly delicious. You are sure to have a Foodtastic Evening here. We ordered the butternut squash risotto as an appetizer along with an order of calamari in a wasabi cream sauce. Both were excellent. The butternut squash risotto was so good my date wanted to order it again as a main entree. Their menu seems to be very eclectic and interesting: Korean-style wings, caprese strudel, orange-glazed duck confit, crispy seared grouper with brown butter carrot puree, and a spicy chicken parmigana are a few of their off the wall offerings. The four ladies at the table next to us said that the burgers and homemade soups are really great, as well. We ordered the braised beef short ribs and the orange glazed duck confit for entrees. Excellent. Not many restaurants serve great braised short

ribs but the d.b.a. café has perfected them. The duck was interestingly tasty. On our second visit we tried the spicy sausage meatballs and, Mama Mia! They were spicy! Holy Heartburn... I can’t believe I ate the whole thing. They were very, very good but plan a quick stop at CVS on the way home

Rumor has it their breakfast burrito with a mimosa to wash it down with is a must try. for an antacid. We also tried the steakhouse salad which, if you’re a fan of steak salads with juicy tomatoes, will have your mouth watering wanting to come back for more. Everyone seemed to be partaking in the house dessert called ‘The Fat Elvis.’ I have always been a fan of both

thin Elvis and the fat Elvis so I decided to join in and order one as well. Are you Hungry tonight? You better be before you order this gastronomical sweet tooth tantalizer. The Fat Elvis is a dessert concoction like no other south of Memphis, Tennessee. This is the one dessert that will have your hips shaking and believe me, your stomach will not be lonesome tonight! What exactly is the Fat Elvis? My best description is a deconstructed banana cream pie that is mind blowing. Creamy, fresh banana custard with peanut whipped cream and some crunchy bacon to finish it. Fat Elvis, meet Fat Foodie. The d.b.a. café offers an excellent selection of wine and beers. Daily specials are written on the chalk board. And they’re open for Sunday brunch. Rumor has it their breakfast burrito with a mimosa to wash it down with is a must try. The food is a priced a tad bit over the norm. Don’t plan on making the d.b.a. café a weekly stop unless your budget permits. With appetizers and salads all in the teens and entrees averaging $25 plus. Daily happy hour deals are offered and they have discounted food specials that can cut your bill in half. Our overall review of the d.b.a. is …get there soon because once the snow birds find out about this hidden treasure we are sure the lines will appear. Sitting on the outdoor patio is great for people watching. We were playing “Guess what’s in their shopping bag?” as we dined outdoors. And what exactly does d.b.a. stand for? Our guess: Doing Business As Great Food Right Next To Wilton Manors.

No more outof-shape dogs! Performance Pups brings Treibball and other dog sports to Oakland Park It is well-established that Islanders are more than fond of their canine companions. Yet even the most devoted ‘hooman’ parent can neglect a basic psychological and physical need of their beloved fur babies: extended periods of play and exercise outside. That’s where Sally Saxton, owner and operator of Performance Pups, Inc. comes in. Since 2007, Saxton and her company have devoted time to training rescues to be therapy companions for veterans with PTSD and training owners to help their dogs be happier, healthier pets through agility and obedience training. She says that “training bonds the owner with the dog and gives dogs a purpose.” It can be hard enough to get ourselves out of doors these days much less realizing how little your pet actually gets to move at full speed, engage with other dogs, and learn new tasks. You may think you’re three walks through Island City Park Preserve or down Wilton Drive would be sufficient. You’re wrong. Saxton and her partner Neil Hennessey offer some creative and fun solutions to enhancing the bond you have with your pet and making sure they get adequate exercise. One way they’re doing this is by operating the dog jumping dock at Tiger Trail Lake off Griffin Road in Dania Beach where dogs can hang out on the south end of the lake at the shore or jump off the dock to retrieve a toy. The dog lake has become a popular way for people to tire out their pups, make sure they are getting socialized, and keep them cool in the hot Florida weather. In the Dog Park at Patrick J. Meli Park,

they also offer lure coursing. This is an activity designed for dogs who love the chase. It’s a chance for to play by pursuing a lure like a plastic bag on a line that’s pulled around a closed course. By the end of the year, Performance Pups is planning to open an indoor training facility in Oakland Park. There they will offer training through dog sports like Treibball, a German import that appeals to the canine herding instinct and builds communication and teamwork between dogs and their handlers. Using commands and body language, trainers and/or owners guide dogs to push large inflatable balls (like those used for yoga or pilates) into a soccer goal as if they were herding sheep into a pen. All too often, pets are left to sleep or lounge around while we are at work. In best case scenarios, a pet owner may be able to come home for a lunchtime walk or hire a dog walker. In truth, most dogs get a morning walk, an evening walk, and maybe a walk before bedtime. Even with a little fetch in the backyard, it’s rare that they get to fulfill their herding, chasing, chewing instincts. Performance Pups Inc. has created a multi-method program where dogs are engaged, exercised, and stimulated in a safe environment. For those pup parents wanting to the one thing they can do to improve their relationship with their pets, Saxton gives her simple and wise advice for happy humans and devoted dogs: “Be very involved in their lives.” You find Performance Pups, Inc. on Facebook or for more information visit www.performancepupsinc.com.

Ask Miss Manors Ready for some more advice from someone who isn’t your mother? The holiday season is upon us — and so are the relatives who want to stay at your Florida abode, ask you to put up your pets, and are a little too curious about Amendment 2.

Dear Miss Manors, My family is coming in from Michigan for Thanksgiving, and they are eager to see our recently remodeled home. While I have absolutely no issue with them visiting, I just don’t want them setting up camp for a week and desecrating what I’ve worked so hard to make my sanctuary. Suggestions?

Signed, No Vacancies Dear No Vacancies, Miss Manors doesn’t understand having a house that can’t be used and enjoyed, but she does understand having relatives who behave like they weren’t raised within four walls. So here are three suggestions that I hope you find helpful. Suggestion #1: Don’t host Thanksgiving at your house. Check your local restaurants for their holiday schedule. There are some restaurants open on Thanksgiving who would gladly welcome the business (obviously since they’re choosing to stay open when they could’ve stayed home in their pajamas until the dinner bell rang). Perhaps you can even start a search for someone else willing to

host the dinner if you bring the turkey. Suggestion #2: Send a list of hotels/motels/Airbnb options with a note saying “Can’t wait to see you! Here are some of the best places to stay nearby!” If you can afford it, offer to pay for their first night. Suggestion #3: Another option may be to create an itinerary that limits the time the whole group spends at the house at any given time. There are great things to do and see in Wilton Manors and surrounding areas. Get out of doors for a canoe trip. Plan a picnic at the beach. The important thing is to make it clear that dinner is from 2:00pm-4:00pm. After that, it’s off to the movie theater or hotel swimming pool. Gone are the days when we suffered our relatives in holiday silence. There was a time when it didn’t matter what you wanted to do, it only matter what you were going to do. Did it matter that you have no room in your 1920s bungalow for 10 guests? No, because there, there, and there is a space for an air mattress — and Grandma and Grandpa will be taking the master. Don’t take this advice (commentary) to mean that Miss Manors is opposed to the traditional Thanksgiving invasion of relatives you’re glad you see only once a year. There is something to be said for the character building that takes place while participating in an event/activity that you have very little control over and don’t find entirely enjoyable. But if you’d rather protect the Koons knock-off knick-knack your ex-boyfriend

gave you and the terrazzo floors you just polished after ripping up that disgusting carpet, or if you just don’t want to hear Aunt Berta and Uncle Jim going at it — that is entirely up to you.

Dear Miss Manors, We have a not so unusual for Florida pet. Her name is Swoosie Kurtz, and she is an iguana. She’s grown quite large over the years, and we let her roam the house as she pleases. We feel the same love for her that most other people feel for their mammalian animal companions. However, my brother and sister-in-law refuse to spend the holidays with us unless we close Swoosie up in a closet (or just another room). They claim that my niece and nephew are afraid of Swoosie and that they as parents cannot risk letting their children get bitten. On the other hand, they don’t give a hoot about putting their yappy, nippy mutts in the garage when we are the ones visiting. I’ve stepped in more dog poop, been covered in more dog hair, and left with more superficial wounds from their dogs while Swoosie has never harmed more than a cricket or two. What should we do?

Signed, I Heart Swoosie

want and knowing when to lay down arms because we’re just not gonna fight that battle. Now you have to ask yourself (because I’m asking you and you asked me) is this a battle you really want to fight? Will confining dear Swoosie for an afternoon be a real problem? In fact, it might be better for her if she can be somewhere she feels safe rather than in a house that’s overrun with guests including children who may not know how to interact appropriately with a pet lizard. Is it really a problem to do something that might make your pet and your guests more comfortable? I’d like you to keep in mind that your decision should have nothing to do with how your brother and sister-in-law carry out their hosting duties. This is about how you decide to welcome guests in your home and how you choose to protect and respect your pet.

Dear Miss Manors, This may be too personal a question, but are you for or against Amendment 2?

Signed, Definitely Pro Dear Definitely Pro,

And I hope that you have a debilitating condition that can be alleviated only through the use of marijuana… Dear I Heart Swoosie, …Sorry, I drifted off there for a minute imagining an anthropomorphized iguana taking on such beloved roles as Charlane MacGregor, Winona Ryder’s Mom in Reality Bites as well as Mrs. Livingston, Jake Gyllenhaal’s mom in Bubble Boy, and of course Joyce Flynn, Melissa McCarthy’s mom on Mike & Molly. But back to you and your holiday themed pet problems... Remember when you were a kid, and you believed being a grown up was all about getting to do whatever you wanted to do? It doesn’t take long after taking on some of our first adult responsibilities before we realize that is the farthest thing from the truth. Part of being an adult is being able to successfully negotiate for the things we

For those Islanders who don’t know what we’re talking about, Amendment 2 is the pro-medical marijuana amendment up for vote on November 4. And I hope that you have a debilitating condition that can be alleviated only through the use of marijuana — because according to this law, that’s the only way you’re ganja get it. Get it? By the time everyone is reading this, we will know which way Floridians voted. For now, Miss Manors has to say that she usually tries to keep her political conversation limited to the ins and outs of basic courtesy. However, she will make a minor prediction. If the amendment passes and the law enacted, there will be a sharp and noticeable increase in sales at Toppings Pizza, Menchie’s, Humpy’s, To the Moon, and The Wilton Creamery.

Thanks, Islanders! If you have unresolved drama, general life questions, or nagging needto-knows about life in Wilton Manors/South Florida, don’t hesitate to write in to missmanors.theislander@gmail.com. or message The Islander Newspaper on Facebook.

served with butter, jam and whipped cream. Yummm! And what can we say about the homemade cakes? They have to be tasted to be believed. Will you have the Lemon Cake or Victoria Sponge Cake with real cream? Maybe it will be the scrumptious Jam Sandwich or maybe you’ll indulge your sweet tooth with their Chocolate Orange Cake. Or will it be one of Oscar’s Cupcakes filled with homemade jam? We highly recommend Oscar’s Bread and Butter Pudding which made our entire dessert experience here deliciously memorable. Oscar's English Tearoom is truly an awesome experience that will take you away from the daily drudge called life and whisk you away to another world. The atmosphere is very inviting and interesting. The owners make you feel like you are a guest in their English Cottage. The food and desserts are all made fresh and there is a wide selection of teas, coffee, wine, beer and non-alcoholic beverages. The Islander definitely recommends a visit to this unique and charming English oasis in Wilton Manors. Day or Night, a visit to Oscar’s will take you across the Atlantic to a world of royalty and grace.
