Residents, business leaders whistling Dixie! Florida, Federal Dollars will be used to improve Dixie Highway

BY MARK KAPLAN Islander staff

From Wilton Manors to Deerfield Beach, Dixie Highway is mostly dominated by commercial and light industrial businesses and not known for being very pedestrian friendly. But along the 0.7-mile stretch of Dixie Highway here in Wilton Manors, that’s slated to change. On June 17, city officials held a meeting at the municipal compound on Dixie Highway to get input from residents on their planned improvements for the road, stretching from the Middle River north to Northeast

26 Street. The improvements – roadway resurfacing, new sidewalks, improvements to the existing sidewalks, new bike paths, new crosswalks, new landscaping and possibly a traffic calming feature – are being funded by a $1 million grant from the federal government. But that’s only the half of it. From Five Points north to Oakland Park, the Florida Department of Transportation [FDOT] will make improvements to the sidewalk and widen the shoulder. They will also add a new stamped crosswalk and pedestrian signals at the Five Points intersection.

Opinions, comments, rants & raves Bring back the Wilton Manors Christmas Boat parade Deck the Waterways with Boat Bows of Holly, Fa la la la la… If my memory serves me right, Wilton Manors once held a Christmas Boat Parade down the back canals. I’m not sure if it was officially sponsored by the city but it was a fun event, albeit small. Hey, we may not be the Intercoastal, but why not? As long as the boats are small and we schedule in sync with the low tide, this could easily become an annual event and a great way for the community to come together. Back yard parties, Boston Whalers strung with holiday lights, neighbors meeting neighbors, something exciting and fun for all the residents who don’t live on the Drive. Put me down as pro Christmas boat parade. Let’s get in the spirit this holiday season.

Talk about traffic bottlenecks. I think the time has come for this Seattle Mega Corporation to dip into their billion dollar bank account and reconfigure the 26th Street Starbucks parking lot before some caffeine injected driver, their view hindered by an illegally parked car, pulls out into the bottleneck and causes a major accident. At least a thousand cars a day pull in and out of the 25 allotted parking spaces. Hello? You guys invented the customizable coffee cup and the double shot mocha macchiato, can’t you reconfigure your parking lot?

Its hurricane season again. Time when we trim the trees around our house that might pose a danger to our homes or vehicles. Recently my landlord hired Manley Tree Service to trim a very large mango tree in my backyard. It was very tall and overgrown and difficult to manage. There was one very large tree branch that was dead. I noticed a family of Starlings made a nest way up high inside that dead tree branch to safely raise their brood. I was concerned, knowing that the tree company would be there that day completing their job. After returning from work the trimming was done and it was quite noticeable. I was worried. How are my little birdies doing? How did the tree company handle this situation? I got out of the car and opened that back gate. I was looking up and thinking, OMG! Where are they? I then h e a rd t h e f a m i l i a r sound of a momma bird feeding her young. I looked straight ahead, and saw that the tree company had sawed above and below the opening to the dead wood where the starlings had nested. They placed the newly mobile nest in between a large V lower in the Mango tree. It was wedged in there tightly and still high enough for protection against any would be predators or pesky squirrels. Momma and Papa Starling never missed a beat. Their 3 babies are getting bigger and stronger and will soon be leaving home to continue life’s cycle. A big shout out

Dog License Fees Bite! I wish the city of Wilton Manors would drop the dog park licensing fees for dogs to use Colohatchee Park. If dog owners did not have to worry about getting a ticket for having their dogs without a parkuse license, a lot more people would walk their dogs at Colohatchee and thus make it safer and less isolated. That is the only reason I do not use the park with my two dogs.

We’re not sure if Paul Falcone is the most hated man in Manors but he’s definitely the most water logged. Hundreds showed up at The Dunkin For Dallas Fundraiser to show Paul who’s got the strongest throwing arm in town and to make a donation to help out the Mayhem Softball Team finance their trip to Dallas to compete in the Gay Softball World Series. Hopefully, Paul will be dried out before the championship so he can’t be accused of pitching a spit ball.

So you think you’ve got the coolest house in Wilton Manors? The Little Rascal’s of NE 19th Terrace would have to disagree… and they’re willing to bet a case of Snickers Bars that their view is “Awesome Sauce” above yours. Visitors are welcome but only if you know the double top secret pass word. Keep a eye out for the Discovery Channel’s Tree House Masters film crew, these little Tarzans are expecting them to arrive soon.

Sheila E wasn’t the only celebrity sighting at this year’s Stonewall Pride Festival. My Little Pony Rainbow Dash posed for photos with festival goers to raise money for the Peaceful Ridge Horse rescue in Davie. The not for profit Peaceful Ridge horse rescue center in Davie takes in and shelters abandoned and poorly treated horses from around South Florida. Pictured with Rainbow Pony is Chief Sky.

A little bit of South Fork right here in Wilton Manors? They may not be J.R. and Sue Ellen, but David and Martha Prado have certainly staked their claim at the corner of Powerline and NW 29th. Many Manors residents have driven past Rancho Prado but The Islander staff was given a rare tour of the sprawling ranch and allowed to take this never before seen photograph of the herd. And just in case any of you Westside Rustlers get any bright ideas, Beware! David and Martha’s livestock is branded.

Now, don’t go getting your panties in a bunch there Alfalfa. Mayoral race Mayor Gary Resnick, who has served in the position since 2008 and has been on the commission since 1998, will have to run for re-election against Doug Blevins, a former commission candidate. Also in the mayoral race is Boyd Corbin, a resident who has never run for office in Wilton Manors before. Each mayoral term is two years. Commissioners serve four-year terms. Resnick ran unopposed in 2012. In 2008, he defeated then mayor Scott Newton and former commissioner Joe Angelo in 2010. If Resnick wins re-election and serves his entire fourth term, he will be tied with Harold T. Price as the longest-serving mayor in the city’s history. Price served from 1960 to 1968, according to the Wilton Manors Historical Society.

Commission race Scott Newton and Ted Galatis, the incumbent commissioners in the race, will have to fend off six challengers if they want to be sworn-in again for another term in November. Newton, who served as mayor from 2004 to 2008, has been on the commission since 2000. Galatis has been on the commission since 2002. They’ll face off against a former commissioner, a mix of brand new candidates and two who have run before. Justin Flippen served on the commission from 2008 to 2010 but resigned his seat in an unsuccessful attempt to become a state representative. Sal Torre and Kimber White ran for the commission in 2012 but lost to Commissioner Tom Green and Vice Mayor Julie Carson. The newcomers are Naomi Parker, Christopher Warnig and Lillie Harris. The election will be held Nov. 4.

News & Views The EYE-Lander: Keeping an eye out for you

Is Wilton Drive the Next Orange Bowl? New development pouring in but parking garage cement not pouring at all “Parking here! Just $20.” Ah, those were the days. Traveling south to the Orange Bowl to see Don Shula, Vern Den Herder and The Dolphins play winning football. Who can forget having to park your car 11 blocks away in Fernando’s Yard and dish out a sawbuck. Us old timers clearly remember the sight of Miami Homeowners waving flags and signs soliciting drivers to pull into their yards and pay to park. Well, it looks like those days are coming back. Parking in resident’s yards just off Wilton Drive is the new black. Parking is a premium in Midtown Manors and it’s only going to get worse. Before you know it, pulling up to the front door of The Pink Submarine to run in and grab a delicious Skipper Hoagie to-go will be an impossibility. But Why? Where does the blame lie for this parking fiasco?

For years we’ve heard rumors about a parking garage to be built next to City Hall. We’ve heard Commissioners and local Business leaders a like tell us the solution is on the way. “We’re working on a comprehensive parking plan for the City. It won’t be long now,” one city official quipped years ago. There’s been jibber jabber of plans like wiping out the municipal garage and turning it into a parking lot with a Hopper Shuttle service running 24/7 between Dixie and The Drive. We’ve even heard scuttlebutt about the City buying out a section of decaying buildings along Dixie and erecting a parking garage. Once there was talk about renting the Ft Lauderdale High School lot on weekends.

But shouldn’t a parking plan have been set in stone before our City planners started issuing so many building permits to strip malls and new dazzling nightclubs? Where are all these new Wilton Drive tourists going to park? Just the thought of this upcoming parking calamity makes one shiver. The time is now for City Hall to get serious on the future of Wilton Manors Parking. No more “We’re working on it”. This city needs to take a breather from their “Walk Through Tuesdays” where they encourage new businesses to develop along Wilton Drive and hire an experienced expert in parking engineering . A parking professional who has worked with other small communities. A parking de-

signer who’s number one job in fixing our parking problem is to maintain the flavor of Wilton Drive and the surrounding areas and not to make Wilton Drive look like just another down town. Every citizen in Wilton Manors should want to see a solution to the upcoming parking crisis before it’s too late. Every business owner on Wilton Drive surely wants to see this potential problem nipped in the bud now. So, before City Hall panics when business leaders are screaming that their customers have no where to park and decides to erect a hideous parking garage that sticks out like a 5 foot long Iguana, let’s pause a moment. Spend the money on an independent parking engineer or designer to draw up some plans. Let the citizens and business owners review the plans. Then let’s hold a vote on our parking future.

Powerline Road too busy for city

Six lane road may get lane reduction

BY MARK KAPLAN Islander staff

Powerline Road is a “six lane highway” running through the Westside of Wilton Manors and residents here want to see it made safer for pedestrians and bicyclists. “It’s a six lane highway with people traveling 60 miles per hour,” said Sal Torre, president of the Westside Association of Wilton Manors. City officials agree. “Right now, it’s kind of a speedway,” said City Manager Joseph Gallegos at a recent commission meeting. To improve the road, which is owned by the state, commissioners unanimously agreed to join the City of Fort Lauderdale in petitioning the Florida Department of Transportation [FDOT], to reduce Powerline Road from six lanes to four lanes. If approved, the project is estimated to be completed by the start of next year. Wilton Manors officials want the lane reduction from the Middle River [city limits] north to Northwest 29 Street. Fort Lauderdale officials want it altered from the Middle River south to Sunrise Boulevard. The cost of making the improvements, said city officials, would be funded by FDOT. Cutting down the number of lanes won’t negatively impact traffic either, according to a report by Fort Lauderdale. Travel times would basically remain the same and safety, the report estimates, would also be improved with a 20 percent reduction in traffic accidents. A lane reduction would cut down on the number of lanes pedestrians have to cross when navigating the road and it would make room for bike paths – something that resident Michael Rajner wants to see happen. Rajner said he often finds riding his bike “challenging” in this city. The lane reduction request is the latest in a series of efforts to improve Powerline Road. In 2012, the city added pedestrian lighting and it has begun efforts to improve Mickel Field, the largest park in the western portion of the city. Mickel, which is underutilized by residents, has become a hot spot for criminal activities lately and city officials hope improvements to the park will drive out the criminal element while increasing the park’s use by residents and visitors. At a previous commission meeting, Mayor Gary Resnick said the city needs to do all it can to improve the Powerline Road area which has experienced higher levels of crime than other parts of the city. “Otherwise, we’re basically just turning our back on that area.”

House of Horrorss!! City efforts to fix problem house are slow-going BY MARK KAPLAN Islander staff

Many Westside residents have waited years for the city to do something about the boarded-up house at 832 NW 30 Court. And now that the wheels of government are turning, they’re going to have to wait a little longer. The house, located near the corner of Oakland Park Boulevard and Powerline Road, hasn’t been maintained by its owners and been boarded up for years, say residents. To compensate for the lack of maintenance on the part of the owners, the city has about $8,000 to mow the lawn; another $286,000 in city liens are on the property. The city has also spent an additional $4,000 on attorneys fees and legal filings trying to get a court decision on the property. The hope is that the city can force a foreclosure, buy the property and demolish it or force the owner to fix up the property. According to City Attorney Kerry Ezrol, the city filed a lien foreclosure case

regarding the house on May 7 but the attorney who represents the owner got an extension. The case isn’t scheduled to be reviewed again until later this month. Ezrol said the owner wanted to bring the house in compliance “but I’m not sure where that’s going to go.” In April, Ezrol estimated it would taken between 90 and 120 days to get a judgment. At that same meeting in April, angry Westside residents showed up to a commission meeting and demanded action. “This speaks volumes about the Westside,” said one resident who accused city officials of not paying enough attention. Commissioners responded, saying that there are similar homes in every area of the city not just the Westside. One resident even threatened legal action if the city didn’t try and find a solution. Sal Torre, president of the Westside Association of Wilton Manors, said it’s been an ongoing problem for years. “You guys need to keep an eye on us [and make sure we fix this],” said Vice Mayor Julie Carson.

Dining on the Drive

The Naked Grape and Tapas BY JESSICA CHESLER If you’ve ever been lucky enough to visit, let alone live in Spain, one of the things you will miss most is going into a bar, ordering a drink, and having small bites of fabulous food appear within hand’s reach. If they don’t come free, you can get a small sandwich or a slice of tortilla espanola for 1 Euro. If you were that lucky, you will be reminded of those intimate, laid back Spanish bars when you walk into The Naked Grape and Tapas bar on Wilton Drive. The waiter will bring you a menu tablet for mainstay items, but they also offer a daily printed menu with a range of seasonal choices . Order wine by the glass or bottle and choose from an array of tapas that can be shared among the table--or enjoyed all yourself. The first item on the menu is Naked Grapes themselves. Oven roasted grapes tossed in olive, salt, pepper, rosemary and thyme, served with a baguette and Vermont Creamery goat cheese, if that is any clue as to how the rest of the menu will be. Split one of the many flatbreads like the Steak and Blue ($14) which comes with skirt steak, rogue Oregon blue cheese, sautéed onions, cremini mushrooms, and arugula.

perfect complement to the other warm and savory dishes on the table. I ordered a glass of Stickybeak Cabernet Sauvignon ($10) which carried me through dinner but paired best with the chocolate ganache Marquise au Chocolat ($8) eaten for dessert. My dinner companion had a Blue Point Toasted Lager ($6). It was a pleasant surprise

Tim Silvinski, The Naked Grape’s resident wine guy, invites you to stop in for a wine tasting. At the time I went, the daily offering included a mango salsa served with corn chips ($5), a Patatas con Queso-potato and cheese au gratin ($5), and a frittata with andouille sausage and red peppers ($5). The last two arrived with a side of split grape tomatoes and arugula with a balsamic dressing. I’m not usually a fan of raw tomatoes, but that’s because they’re usually served out of season and not properly dressed. These were sweet, full of flavor, and the

that they carried a small range of craft beers as well. Finally, the homemade bread pudding ($5) was delicious. For anyone out there who remembers the whole bread pudding experience when visiting Grammy’s house over the holidays, the Naked Grape’s bread pudding just may bring back those tasty memories. Part of the great experience of dining here is the newly covered patio, perfect for summer evening conversation--and the Naked Grape is as much about the conversation the wine starts as it is about the wine itself. One or both of the owners might stop by your table for a friendly chat, and you’re bound to see someone you know walking their dog down Wilton Drive. The Naked Grape is open most days from afternoon to 1:00 AM making it ideal for a late, light lunch, for starter drinks and snacks before dancing (or finishing drinks and snacks after dancing).

They’ve both been around forever and experienced they’re fair share of success and setbacks, but they basically rule the coffee and breakfast pastry roost concurrently. But hold the java! If you’ve been craving a New York Cronut, then you finally will get your chance right here in Broward County. The Rhino Horn is soooo good. And a must try is Rhino’s doughnutinfused milkshake! Yummm. O.K., Diet starts tomorrow. The chef-made dough in their donuts is far more substantial than a Krispy Kreme and never ventures too far into cakey. The flavors are balanced, present but never overbearing. It left me satisfied, and I was able to take the rest of my coffee about 200 feet to the beach to enjoy the rest of the evening. I only wish that Wilton Manors had been one of the locations on which Rhino had taken a chance. For all you doughnut lovers in the Island City, the coffee alone is worth the drive to the end of Commercial Boulevard.

The FDOT project is part of a larger effort to improve a 3.5-mile stretch of Dixie Highway from Northeast 26 Street in Wilton Manors to McNab Road in Pompano Beach. All of it costing an estimated $3.9 million. But while FDOT’s project is scheduled to be finished in the Fall of this year, the federal money won’t be ready for the southern half of Dixie Highway until at least next year. “We are anticipating this project will break ground in late 2015 and we are looking forward to the improvements, which we believe will provide drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians with safer access to the properties along this roadway,” wrote David Archacki, director of the city’s emergency management and utilities department. So far, the project design is about 30 percent complete, he added. The planned improvements to Dixie Highway come as the city is in the midst of trying to get one of the commuter rail stations that will run on the FEC railway line. City officials here think that the east side of Dixie Highway south of Five Points would be the best location for a station. Multiple locations for stations throughout Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach Counties will be chosen. Wilton Manors is currently in competition with Oakland Park for a station. The short distance between Oakland Park’s proposed location, Oakland Park Boulevard and Dixie Highway, and the proposed Wilton Manors site makes it unlikely both locations will be chosen for a station. Those who want to receive updates regarding the Dixie Highway improvement project from Five Points south can send an email to darchacki@wiltonmanors.com.

Over the Bridge Dining Out with “The Ft. Lauderdale Foodie”

Nicks Italian Restaurant 3496 Ocean Boulevard Fort Lauderdale 954-563-6441

The Hibiscus Café 3000 N. Federal Highway Ft Lauderdale 954-533-7224 It doesn’t get any better than when The Ft. Lauderdale Foodie finds a cute café with fantastic food just yards from the Wilton Manors Bridge. If you thought that the only good food in the 3000 Plaza at Oakland & Federal was Times Square Pizza then your taste buds are missing out. Tucked away between a flower shop and an Oriental rug maker is The Hibiscus Café. This is the perfect spot for Breakfast, lunch and Sunday Brunch. But not too late on Sunday as The Hibiscus Café’ has only a few tables indoors and along the sidewalk, so try to beat the noon rush. Our table of four Sunday Brunchers enjoyed everything from the tasty Banana Pancakes and Chocolate Chip Pancakes to the fresh Tomato Grits. The Praline Pecan & Crème Brulee French Toast was simply perfection with syrup. And the Baked Oatmeal was a new found taste bud treasure. For lunch we highly recommend the Cucumber Finger Sandwiches and the Prosciutto Panini. Fresh homemade Lobster Bisque Soup made our lunch even more memorable. We are not sure you will find a better tasting quiche in Broward County. The filet sandwich was alone was worth the 5- 10 minute wait you might have to get a table. The Hibiscus Café is small, homey, cute and adorably decorated with an old fashioned feminine flair and is very charming. Your meal is served on fanciful china plates and they use real silverware here. Fresh Flowers adorned all of the 8 indoor tables. This is a kick back and relax local spot for breakfast or lunch so if you’re in a rush, wait till next time. But if you have an hour to enjoy one of The Ft Lauderdale Foodie’s new favorite finds, The Hibiscus Café is worth the 3 minute drive across the street. The Hibiscus Café is located at 3000 North Federal Highway between Middle River Drive and Federal in the 3000 Plaza. Just across the street from Target. They’re open for breakfast and lunch Wednesday Through Sunday till 2:30 pm and we highly recommend you try it. 954-533-7224 is the number in case you get lost.

There are over over 41,000 restaurants in Florida and over 1,200 in Fort Lauderdale alone. Finding a true dining gem among those seems like a difficult task. Eureka! We found it at Nicks Italian Restaurant on A1A. Rarely does one find a Fort Lauderdale Restaurant that has history, ambiance, great food and nightly entertainment unless your palate is guiding you to Nick’s Italian Restaurant just off Galt Ocean Mile. Since the early 1970’s Nicks has been serving Fort Lauderdale foodies the best in Italian dishes. From their Snapper Puttanesca, homemade Ravioli, Chicken Saltimboca and, less we forget, their daily homemade bread is doggy bag worthy (coming from a Jersey bread loving boy, that’s saying something). First, a word about our host, Dominic. He made us feel like part of the family, sat with us for a spell at our table and, if you ever wanted to talk about boating in Fort Lauderdale, he’s your man. Dominic recommended we start our meal with his homemade Italian Egg Roll Appetizer. We followed his advice and also ordered the Chicago Style Calamari. We devoured both as fast as they reached our table. The Italian Egg Rolls (a family secret recipe) were as delicious as advertised and the Calamari was fried to perfection, mixed with cherry peppers, diced tomatoes & a light vinaigrette. The table next to us had ordered the cold antipasto for two. It looked so yummy we had to order one as well. No doubt, one of the best Antipastos we’ve had in South Florida. Loaded with grilled eggplant, zucchini, capicolla, Genoa salami, sharp provolone cheese, Mediterranean olives, fresh roasted peppers, artichokes & a homemade Tuscan bean salad all make this an

Florida. Our last ‘Pass The Fork’ recommendation is Nick’s baked Lasagna in a Bolognese sauce. This is Lasagna baked as it should be baked. One warning about Nick’s Lasagna, be prepared to eat a lot! This is the Godzilla of Baked Lasagna dishes and is not for amateur eaters. The next time you ask “Do we want to do Italian tonight?” make sure you head over to Nicks Italian Restaurant. This Fort Lauderdale foodie gang of

Nick’s Baked Fillet of Salmon was topped with diced tomatoes, capers, kalamata olives, artichokes, roasted garlic & a touch of marinara sauce. This dish was the talk of the table as the fork of salmon was passed around so we could “Taste, Taste! You must taste the salmon!” The last entrée that gets a loud Mangia! shout from our table of foodies is the homemade Stuffed Peppers. It is so hard to find good old fashioned stuffed peppers in South Florida but Nick’s has em. Just like Nana used to make. Stuffed with beef and sausage and rice then topped with melted mozzarella. Am I in Staten Island? No question, the stuffed peppers were as good as you could eat in

eaters will certainly be back. Nicks also offers an upstairs supper club with live music and dancing. We stopped in for a night cap and danced to the live music of the band Miguel and Company. Heading upstairs and cutting the rug was a great way to burn off some of the most delicious calories our dining group has ever encountered. Nicks Italian Restaurant is at 3496 N. Ocean Blvd in Fort Lauderdale, Just off Galt Ocean Mile. Call 954-563-6441 for reservations. Nicks is open 7 nights a week and has a happy hour with live entertainment. Ask Miss Manors Last month, a concerned reader wanted to know what to do about her amazing boyfriend who gave not-so-amazing gifts. We told her to get over herself. This month’s column begins with a reader who thinks he might be that boyfriend.

Dear Miss Manors: I really enjoyed reading your helpful column recently in The Islander. I could use your help though, because I think I might be the boyfriend that "Disappointed" wrote about. Not long ago, my girlfriend noticed some clove-flavored LifeSavers in a store and remarked "Wow", those are hard to find and I love clove. Her birthday was just around the corner, so I went back and bought a 24-pack for her birthday. (And BTW, it was a drugstore, but they have nice stuff). Last year I bought her four bottles of the shampoo she liked but wouldn’t buy at the grocery store because she thought they were too expensive. They were from the Pharmacy Department, so now I'm worried that it's my girlfriend that wrote. Anyway, I know I might be a little dense when it comes to what she wants, but you know how we guys are, it just gets confusing. I liked your idea of forgetting the gifts. Do you think I might be safer if I just bought her something nice for no special reason now and then, or maybe just take her out for a nice dinner?

Signed, Worried, but Anonymous for Now

Dear Worried, Gifting is more of an art than a science. While “Disappointed” from last month’s column lacked grace as a gift-getter, your girlfriend may treasure the fact that you notice these small, random wants of hers. You know your girlfriend best. Does she appear unhappy after unwrapping your tokens of affection? Does she seem to be putting on a show of gratitude instead of spontaneous combustion from surprise? If so, then maybe it’s time to have The Talk. Like everything else in a relationship, the level of attention and financial investment in gifts is a matter of discussion and negotiation. Sometimes the best method is the most direct. I suggest coming right out and asking her if she thinks you’re a good gift-giver. You want to let her know that you want her to know how special she is to you everyday but especially on those extra-special special occasions. Then follow the conversation wherever it takes you. If the two of you like the idea of abandoning the exchange of gifts, go forth and be satisfied. However, if you decide to up your gift game, there are lots of fun ways to become a better gifter whether it’s on the crafty side (Google “Pinterest”) or the extravagant side (Google “Kimye”) The fact that you’ve written in with this question shows you already have the foundation of being a good

gifter (and a good boyfriend): a genuine interest in the experience of the other person.

Dear Miss Manors, I heard Wilton Manors is a vacation home haven for celebrities. Is this true? Is there a map of the stars’ homes available?

Sincerely, Not-a-Paparazzo Dear Not-a-Paparazzo, We may not have a huge Hollywood sign at the foot of the James Dean Bridge, but we do have a few wellknowns who like to call Wilton Manors home. I’ve recently been informed that Rocky Marciano once lived on NW 24th Street, Olympic swimmer Johnny Weismuller spent his retirement years living in the River Bend, professional body builder Dayana Cadeau resides on the Island, local legend Woody Woodbury is a resident and Styx bass-player Ricky Lynn Phillips had a resort home here. Rumor has it that we’ve had a few famous visitors as well like fashion designer Richie Rich who has been spotted several times at George’s Alibi as well as comedienne Sarah Silverman who has been spotted dining on the drive with her dad who’s a local. Wayne Huizenga has been seen having Breakfast at the Quality Diner and Sandra Bullock has been spotted rolling in the gutter at Manor Lanes. But I am not aware of any available map.

Dear Miss Manors, I just caught on to Game of Thrones, so my boyfriend and I spent almost 40 hours binge watching seasons 1 through 3. We then decided to take a break from television. But somewhere around the 48 hour mark, I was overcome by a feeling of emptiness and longing. Nearly two weeks later, a friend of mine convinced me to try out

Orange is the New Black on Netflix. Now that we’ve finished Season 2, I have that same feeling of, dare I say, despair. While I don’t want to spend my life streaming amazing content, I just want more and more of these shows. What should I do?

Signed, The Unabashed Binge Watcher Dear Unabashed, Binge watching is like a summer romance. Sweet, intense, affirming, H-O-T, and always all too short. Actually, binge watching is like rolling on Molly. You’ve been dropping the GO from HBO, thizzing on the Flix, making a cuddle puddle on your couch and entering a world where you wonder whether you’d make it better as a citizen of King’s Landing or as a Wildling north of The Wall. By the way, are you a Piper, a Taystee, a Nicky, or God forbid a Pornstache? Unfortunately, this is a problem I’ve yet to solve for myself. There is almost nothing better than settling in with someone who shares your taste, spending three days in your sofa nest, and stopping only for pee breaks and to walk around so blood clots don’t form in your legs. But when there isn’t another episode left to stream, the low gets way low because we are dying to know WHAT’S GOING TO HAPPEN NEXT?!!!!!!!!! So, you have two choices: 1) Go old-fashioned and only watch one new episode a week or 2) Enjoy the binge, and then go cold turkey. Fill the emptiness inside with sunshine, days at the beach, gardening, and (for the sake of goodness) take the dogs for a damn walk. If you have unresolved drama, general life questions, or nagging need-toknows about life in Wilton Manors/South Florida, don’t hesitate to write.
