Wilton Manors

Wilton Drive has become Broward’s newest restaurant row

In case you blinked… “Where should we eat tonight?” Las Olas? Lauderdale by the Sea Pavillion? Take a drive up to Worth Avenue? How About South Florida’s newest restaurant row, Wilton Drive. In case you blinked, The Drive is quickly transforming into a dining meca. And it’s here to stay. Sushi, Italian, Thai, American Fusion, Tapas, French, Gourmet Burgers, Delightful Desserts and Cozy Café’s are the new tenants on Wilton Drive. And there’s more on the way.

This ain’t your Grandma’s Wilton Drive It’s a new atmosphere taking over Wilton Drive these days. Slowly replacing the wild nightlife partiers and dance divas are couples out for a night of delicious dining followed by a leisurely stroll along Wilton Drive while window shopping art galleries and antique stores and then stopping for ice cream or a gourmet cupcake. And this new Wilton Drive isn’t just burgers and fries. Welcome to the new Eat Street USA. Sushi lovers are choosing Eat Street, AKA, Wilton Drive as their first choice for that Sushi satisfaction. The word is

spreading about Wilton Manors’ wide array of Sushi Spots such as Gaysha, Hard Rock Sushi, Siam Cusine, Tee-Jay, Galanga and Sozo Sushi Bar. “We come here at least once a month,” Galanga diner and sushi lover Nadine Roberts of Dania Beach says. “We call it the sushi strip. There’s no other place where you can walk a few blocks and find such a wide array of sushi establishments and delicious Thai food.” Let’s take a look at a few of the newer establishments that you may want to visit. They all have something special to offer and should not disappoint any hungry diner. We’ll start off with 13 even, who’s motto is “they serve good juju.” From flatbreads to paninis to some of the juiciest oysters in Broward County, 13 even has quickly become a local favorite for diners. On the same block you’ll find Wilton Manor’s newest eatery, Mind Your Manors which boasts a delicious salmon bruschetta, amazing black bean hummus and the soon to be famous, Wilton Cheesesteak. Across the street is Scarfone’s Coal Fired Pizza. Not quite your average pizza shop, Scarfone’s is one of the swankiest pizzerias you will ever find and their salads, such as the Caesar salad with anchovies and spinach salad topped with rosemary

chicken are the talk of the walk. Located at the Gateway of Wilton Drive inside Wilton Station you’ll find Eat Streets brightest new star, Oscar’s Tea Room. Lite Biters and tea tottlers from across Broward County are making Oscar’s a must do destination. A cup of English Tea poured from a Queen Elizabeth Teapot combined with a Victoria Sandwich is the new Wilton rage. “This is our third trip to Oscar’s,” Mary Bowen of Sea Ranch Lakes said as she sipped her Camomile Tea. “We love the atmosphere, the teas and especially the homemade desserts made from scratch” Mary’s tea mate Robert agreed stating that eating sandwiches, British trifles and scones at Oscar’s was like taking a mini trip to Old England. “We’re treated like royalty here,” Robert said as he took a bite of raspberry coconut shortbread. Is there any restaurant in the South Florida currently more popular than Rosie’s Bar & Grill? Already known for their famous burgers, amazing blackened grouper tacos and the area’s number one Sunday Brunch, Rosie’s is now the place to bring your appetite seven days a week. The patio

Opinions, comments, rants & raves Wilton Drive parking problem solved! First , I would like to cast my ‘NO’ vote early against any of my hard earned tax dollars being used to build a parking garage. If we are so gung ho on building such a monstrosity along the Drive then let the business owners use their own money. It’s their “entertainment district” so they should “entertain” the idea of co-mingling their profits to pay for a place for THEIR CUSTOMERS to park. But I do believe I have a solution to this parking dilemma and the residents will not have to spend a dime. Back in the day there was a strip of nightclubs at the corner of Federal Highway and Oakland Park. Like the Drive, too many bars in one area. Montego Bay, Uptown, Septembers, Roland’s, Dina’s Treehouse, Café Martinique and others. I was part of a valet parking crew that worked all the bars and we would run the cars over to the Britts Department Store parking lot at the Coral Ridge Mall. We were young and in shape so it wasn’t that hard. On a Friday and Saturday Night we would be parking a couple thousand cars Why can’t these Wilton Drive business owners do the same? Make a small donation to the high school service clubs and use the Fort Lauderdale High School parking lot or the city municpal garage lot or even the Publix lot late night. It’s not that far of a run for a valet parker and hiring security guards to keep an eye on the vehicles solves the next dilema. Parking Problem Solved.

Hey, Mr. Self Important Yes, you. You know who you are. Is it really that important that you cut the time to get from one stop sign to the other by two seconds? Did you notice that school bus drop stop you just flew by? Did you even know that there are children living in Wilton Manors? Of course not, you’re the new king of party town. Rules are just for people who are visiting your new planet. The only thing you’re concerned about is figuring out back road short cuts so you can get to Bills Filling Station before the cover charge goes up. Please, people, this is a real town with real families. Not just a party place for you, Mr. Self Important.

Wilton Manors: You do not light up my life!

Another one bites the dust It was a very sad day when our favorite seafood restaurant ‘The Sea Grill’ closed. Now word comes of another great Wilton Manors landmark restaurant, The Old Florida Seafood House is for sale and may be closing its doors as well. Although not the same quality as it was 20 years ago, our family enjoyed our monthly dining out night at Old Florida Seafood. We will miss cracking stone crabs and eating conch chowder right here in our home town. Bon Voyage my old friend.

I have a scratch pad on my kitchen counter and every time my electricity goes out or the lights flicker I keep track. So far this year I have lost power 13 times. In the past 12 months… 21 times my power has gone off. Is it just me or is our electrical infrastructure desperately in need of some upgrades. Does FPL have any skin in this game? They’re making millions off Wilton Manors yet many of our utility poles and junction boxes look like they were installed in 1965. When was the last time FPL upgraded a local utility pole_ Wilma? I sincerely worry about a hurricane hitting us or, even a minor tropical storm. These old wooden poles look worn enough that even a big bad wolf could huff and puff and blow them down. Let’s wake up people. Hopefully I’m not the only one who notices this. I hope we have some kind of plan for the future. I also hope that our city planners have insisted that all new developments being planned and or built must install underground utility lines and not allow poles.

Cross here and get killed! I’m curious, what genius designed the Crosswalk at the corner of 15th Avenue and 24th Street? The Grim Reaper? This poorly marked, poorly engineered, and poorly lit crosswalk is a death trap waiting for victims. Dog walkers heading home from the park… look both ways… TWICE!. Leaving Storks Bakery with that morning cup of wake me up coffee? Cross 15th and you may be feeling rundown quick. Unless you enjoy the sounds of beeps and honks by passing motorists who are just as confused, don’t trust your life in this crosswalk. The three street embossed crossing paths are baffling enough. Is the pedestrian Crossing sign for walking along 15th and crossing 24th? (If so, Why? The stop sign should be enough to alert drivers to

look both ways). Or are the pedestrian walk signs for people to cross busy 15th? (Which is exactly what they should be there for). I have yet to see a car yield for anyone trying to cross 15thAvenue, despite the four signs alerting drivers that this is a crosswalk. Isn’t there a state law? I don’t want to die trying to cross 15th Avenue at a legally marked crosswalk and I shouldn’t have to be writing a letter to the editor to get this dangerous safety hazard looked at by our city officials.

Westside Residents Mickeled Pink!

$1.4 Million in improvements planned BY MARK KAPLAN Islander staff

Wilton Manors – It’s not the $2.1 million that was talked about, but Mickel Field is slated to receive about $1.4 million in funding for improvements over the next two years. “I want to get things moving now,” said Commissioner Scott Newton. Last month, commissioners unanimously approved spending $1.4 million on redeveloping the park. The planned improvements, which were spurred by an increase in crime there and a decrease in its use by residents, include: a walking trail, estate-style fencing, a pavilion, shade canopies, fitness equipment, new bathroom and a volleyball court. One resident asked that a new playground be installed and officials said they would look into finding grant money to pay for it. Officials also want to turn the concession stand into a police substation. The small baseball field will be removed to make room for the improvements but the big one will be left in place. The city won’t take action though until the finance department nails down the terms of the $744,000 loan. The other half of the money would come from a combination of impact fees, grant moneys and general funds. City Manager Joseph Gallegos said the city has already secured $55,000 in grants but he assured the commission that more grants could be obtained. Mayor Gary Resnick added that the city may be able to get some of the county money leftover from the $400 million county parks bond passed in 2000. The interest payments over the life of the 15-year loan come to about $40,000 but Finance Director Bob Mays said he might be able to negotiate a better interest rate than 2.95 percent one he presented to the commission. “A $5,000 a month loan payment is very doable for this city,” said Resnick. Borrowing the money did cause some concern amongst commissioners. Vice Mayor Julie Carson and Newton expressed support for the project but seemed reluctant to borrow $744,000. “Maybe get the money a different way,” suggested Carson. Commissioner Ted Galatis seemed offended by the reluctance of commissioners. He pointed out that they previously spent $390,000 to buy two residential properties that may be used to expand Hagen Park. “We’ve let it go to hell. It’s time to fix it,” said Galatis about Mickel. Galatis and Newton voted against the Hagen properties purchase. Galatis’ support for Mickel drew loud applause from the residents in attendance. Westside Association President Sal Torre said investing in Mickel would encourage more development along Powerline Road and the Westside community. Resnick said the park had fallen on hard times lately but that it could be the “gem” it once was. “This is going to benefit the whole city.”

News & Views The EYE-Lander: Keeping an eye out for you

Is water the next gold?

Unless we act now, new development means water shortages, higher water bills We really must discuss the redevelopment trends of South Florida and the availability of drinking water in the future. As our real estate economy recovers Broward County, in fact all of Florida, are witnessing many new plans for housing construction—especially rental units. As a result, we are getting close to the limits of how much water can be pumped out of the state’s aquifers. What exactly does this mean to you? Higher costs for drinking water and sewage treatment. If your heart palpitates now when you open that Wilton Manors water bill you better plan on purchasing a defibrillator for the future. Across Broward County, more than 3,200 apartment units are currently under construction with 8,800 in the planning stage. This includes the 179 unit rental complex on N.E. 24th Street in Wilton Manors and Possible development of the church lot on 26th. Three golf courses in the county are about to be paved over for housing developments, Fort Lauderdale

has several big high rise structures being erected. The gigantic $1 billion Metropica mixed-use development will be built in Sunrise on the edge of the Everglades. Where are we going to get the water? Where are we going to get a second job to supplement our income to pay the water bill?

Across Broward County, more than 3,200 apartment units are currently under construction with 8,800 in the planning stage. In none of the affected communities—nor at the county level—have serious questions been asked by elected officials about the future

availability and cost of drinking water and sewage treatment. Central Florida has the same worries as us. Their supply faces a 250-million-gallon per day water shortfall. We need to look towards Sarasota to find anyone in this state who is taking action. Four counties in that area collaborated to create an independent water district which has a combination of underground and above-ground reservoirs where more than 9 million gallons of water can be stored. So it can be done! The challenge South Florida faces is trying to harness, capture and store the millions of gallons of fresh water that drains into the ocean. We must figure this out now. It is both sad and dangerous that our civic leaders, dazzled by the potential tax revenues generated from redevelopment, have not figured in the cost of the coming South Florida water shortage. Many thanks to this month’s contributing editor, Paul Kuta, for his input and knowledge.

Good Morning, Wilton Manors:

The Alchemist JESSICA CHESLER

The smell of roasting coffee beans will lure you to the other side of the open gates at Eucalyptus Gardens. The intoxicating scent is coming from The Alchemist, the coffee shop that has anchored the Gardens since its opening. The little gem of a place is tucked away in the elbow of NE 13th Avenue off of 26th Street. Its location is close enough for anyone in Wilton Manors to make the trip but not so convenient that you’ll be stopping by on your way to work. While most coffee shops experience a morning rush, the 8 o’clock hour is the calmest at The Alchemist. They’re just opening up for the day. There is no long line, no complicated menu options, and no need to write your name on the outside of a paper cup. Likewise, you won’t find yourself checking your watch while you wait for the barista to

Inside the unassuming building is a virtual laboratory of glass beakers, siphons, and burners; bubbling water, and café concoctions being concocted. There are a few tables inside, but most of the seating is out of doors near the garden or under the cover of a former orchid house with tables made from reclaimed wood and adorned with potted orchids in bloom and for sale. Five dollars will get you a croissant with turkey, Swiss cheese, an egg, and avocado. You can also have toasted rustic Italian bread with buttery butter and jammy jam or an undeniably yummy brie with honey and sliced almonds. Dining on the Drive

Mind Your Manors (MYM) JESSICA CHESLER

The restaurant business is hard. Even the good ones can have a difficult time staying open. This can make dining out rather frustrating at times. If you have any disposable income at all, the anticipation of an eatery with both atmosphere and a substantial menu can be equal to the disappointment that begins the countdown to closing the doors of that same eatery. On Wilton Drive alone, Islanders have watched them come and go like flights out of Ft. LauderdaleHollywood International. A few weeks ago, Mind Your Manors opened its doors in the space once occupied by the now failed Pinche Taqueria. The concept for MYM is simple, straightforward, and solid: a one-page paper menu filled with updated American classics, a relaxed atmosphere with friendly service, and a craft beer selection to woo any beer lover among us. After a failed attempt at dinner on a crowded Saturday night, I met with better success on the following Monday evening. Yet, even without the crowd, there was a steady stream of people that didn’t make the place feel empty. For starters, you can choose from appetizers like fried mushrooms, stuffed mushrooms, and smoked salmon br-

From the list of 10 or so bottled crafts, I tried the Hazed and Infused, a hopped up Boulder ale, and the Smoked Porter, a darker choice but also a delight. The meal was finished with a slice of white chocolate cheesecake. The only disappointment was that they didn’t have any coffee to go with it. The bottom line is that MYM has the foundation it needs to be a staple on The Drive.

The concept for MYM is simple, straightforward, and solid… uschetta. The menu is filled out with sandwiches, burgers, and a daily dessert menu. I began with the black bean hummus which arrived with warm pita triangles and slices of tomato and cucumber. The waiter recommended the special, a blackened grouper sandwich and the MYM house burger. I was tempted to order the burger which comes with brie and bacon. However, I’ve found it’s always best to

judge a dining establishment by the simplest item so, I went with the classic cheeseburger—just the patty and a slice of cheddar between two toasted buttered buns. The patty was a perfectly cooked blend of ground chuck, short rib, and brisket. The fries were golden, crispy, and tender. And yes, the blackened grouper sandwich was also ordered and equally enjoyed with a side of sweet potato fries and a marshmallow dipping sauce.

Tell your taste buds that biting into the Wilton Cheese Steak is a must! Final recommendation to readers: Go. Eat. Enjoy yourself and if you want an attentive waiter with Southern manners, ask for Kyle.

Over the Bridge Dining Out with “The Ft. Lauderdale Foodie”

Kelly Brothers Irish Pub 3045 N. Federal Highway Fort Lauderdale SW Corner of Oakland Park Blvd. and Federal Highway The newest pub to arrive in our area is Kelly Brothers Irish Pub located in the former site of The Wayward Sailor. It’s now smoke free and is taking on an all new look and all new atmosphere. Kelly brothers motto is a that a Warm Irish Welcome Awaits You but they left out the warm Shepherd’s Pie and chicken pot pie served from their kitchen, the great entertainment on weekends and the super friendly and fun staff that also awaits you. You might even find a poker night or two at Kelly Brothers. Kelly Brothers has a new kitchen that serves

Cafe Vico 1125 North Federal Hwy, Fort Lauderdale 954-565-9681 Talk about hidden secrets, diamonds in the rough, the oasis in the desert… Café Vico is it. And, believe it or not, it’s just around the corner. You could walk there. Never heard of it? Neither did our foodie patrol until one of us had to run to the Comcast Office to pay their bill because, supposedly, The Islander doesn’t pay their employees enough, and there, buried in the corner of this strip center was a sign that read, Café Vico. We tried it and what a great dining experience Café Vico is. Café What, you ask? Never heard of it? You’ve been to that strip mall a million times. Isn’t that the same strip center where Mr. Laffs was? What’s it called? Café Who? Café Vico is one of the best restaurants in Fort Lauderdale, PERIOD! Phenomenal Food, Fantastic atmosphere, beautifully decorated and they have a quaint outdoor garden patio for dining. The piano bar is no slouch either. If you’re a Casa D’Angelo fan then you will love Café Vico too. We could go on and on but let’s talk food. We ducked in on a Sunday Night and started our meal off with one of our favorite thingsBread. We were served homemade rolls at the beginning of our dinner that came with a incredible garlic and olive oil dipping concoction that is truly out of this world. Be careful, you may be doggie bagging your main course because you will not want to stop eating the bread. If you’re a garlic fan, these rolls will be you new all time favorite. For our appetizers, we ordered Salmon Carpaccio, the cold antipasto and Portabello Mushrooms. All were delicious, especially the Salmon Carpaccio. The grilled Portabello Mushrooms were double good when doused in Café Vicos homemade balsamic vinegar sauce. We also had a taste of their sautéed Broccoli Rabe which is a garlic lover’s dream come true. You won’t find any vampires hanging out at this restaurant. We can only say the main entrees each of us ordered were sheer perfection. One of the foodies at our table claims this is the best lasagna she has ever had. “Exceptional” was her exact words. The Veal Chop may be the best

up some fantastic bar food and delicious pizza. Where else can your order a Shepherd’s Pie Pizza? The Islander staff has become big fans of their Buffalo Chicken Pizza. Looking for a quick bite? Kelly’s Kitchen has an appetizer menu offering wings, tenders, Mahi fingers and even beer pretzel bites. They have a great selection of sandwiches too. The Philly Cheese Steak and the Kelly Brothers Gorgonzola Cheese Burger is highly recommended. If you’re a draft beer aficionado then you might want to stop in and grab a mug of Guinness dark, Smithwicks, Harp, Stella, Magners Cider or one of the 12 other brews they have on tap. And speaking of drinking, the very best thing about Kelly Brothers Irish Pub is that the drinks are very reasonably priced. So bring your friends and spend a few hours. There’s big things happening at Kelly Bothers Irish Pub with an all new décor being planned, an upstairs game and party room and more nightly bands are being lined up.

in Broward. The homemade Veggie Ravioli is soooooo amazingly good and the Black Spaghetti with sausage was off the Italian eatery charts (you must try the black spaghetti for yourself.) The folks at the table next to us also were raving about the Ravioli and the Eggplant Parmesan as well. What can we say… This place is good! We cannot forget to mention the homemade desserts. The New York Cheesecake must surely be baked by a true New York transplant and be warned, if you order the Berry Pie you’ll be addicted. Bring your credit card. Pricing is just a bit above moderate but worth every dime in credit card interest payments. Café Vico has a full bar and is open for both lunch and dinner.

SAVING LIVES SINCE 1983!

The Drive at Rosie’s at 2449 Wilton Drive is now the place to been seen and doing lunch at Rosie’s is a must for local businessmen and power brokers. Speaking of burgers, Georgie’s Alibi is no slouch. Ranked by burger buff’s throughout Florida as having the best burger in the Sunshine State, Georgie’s outside patio is filled daily with gourmet burger lovers. Four years running and the accolades and awards keep piling up for the Alibi burger from such notables as Food & Wine magazine and Burger Beast. Georgie’s nightly dinner specials are also a must on the Eat Street taste tour. Their homemade bacon wrapped meatloaf is deliciousioso! When the local Lady’s Club Lunch Bunch gets together they make a beeline for Shawn & Nick’s Courtyard Café located at 2211 Wilton Drive. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, The Courtyard Café is one of the most popular places for any Islander who enjoys the feel of a cozy café and wants to partake in a great breakfast lunch or dinner. Anything you try here is going to be excellent but the reiging superstars on The Courtyard Café’s menu are the Eggs Benedict, Nick’s famous fried green tomatoes, the potato pancakes the Strawberry Thick French Toast and The Monte Cristo Sandwich. Yummm. Is it date night? The Naked Grape and Tapas at 2163 Wilton Drive is a must stop on the Eat Street restaurant tour. Delicious food with nightly specials, a fantastic array of Tapas and the most fantastic wine selection in town make dinner for two at the Naked Grape memorable. Eat Street’s #1 hidden secret is slightly off the beaten path at 2401 NE 11th Ave. Le Patio Restaurant is small, quaint, very romantic and is a gourmet diner’s dream. You don’t have to be a French food aficionado to enjoy this charming French Bistro. Oh, La La… Le Patio has the best French Onion Soup on the Island and you must order the Baked Brie and the homemade lobster ravioli. For 35 years, Bona Italian Restaurant is known with Islanders for their homemade Italian dishes. Located at 2468 Wilton Drive, Bona offers nightly dinner specials and their chicken portobello or pasta with vodka sauce cannot be duplicated. Tropics Restaurant and Piano Bar at 2000 Wilton Drive is another special place on Eat Street for any date night. Nightly entertainment and fantastic entrees such as their salmon ‘cooked your way’, crispy duck and stuffed chicken make Tropics one of Wilton Manors must do dinner spots. Prime Rib connoisseurs will always be found at Tropics on Wednesday night for their fabulous Prime Rib feast. Looking for a quickie? Casual fast dining has arrived on Eat Street too. Food fanatics from all over are making the trek to The New York Grilled Cheese Company at 2207 Wilton Drive where they’ve taken the grilled cheese sandwich to the next level with a large selection of waffle grilled cheese sandwiches, all served with a cup of tomato bisque soup. In the mood for the best sub sandwich in South Florida? You’re in luck, The Pink Submarine at 2041 Wilton Drive isn’t your average sub shop. Fresh, fun and fantastic subs are the food fare here. One bite and you’re hooked. Greg.gar.i.ous at 2033 Eat Street is quickly becoming known for their Baja Tacos and flatbread fare. Plans for pizza tonight? Humpy’s Pizza, 2244 Wilton Drive, may be Eat Streets

Continued from page 1 most famous locale. But Humpy’s, always known for their great pizza, wings and salads, is now the place on Eat Street for Gourmet cupcakes. Individually or by the box, these little cakes are scrumptious! Humpy’s Cookies n Cream and Chocolate Peanut Butter Cupcakes are out of this world and, dare it be said, as good as Magnolia Bakery in Manhattan. Super sandwiches are the mainstay at the all new Hobo’s Grill at 2426 Wilton Drive but the spicy Cajun Alligator Bites and fresh chicken tenders are a must try for any foodie’s taste buds. If wraps and salads are on today’s menu then Juice Blenz at 2248 Wilton Drive is the place. A Juice Blendz Grilled Chicken Caesar Wrap combined with a nutritious fresh fruit smoothie is the perfect combination lunch here.

You dining experience on Eat Street isn’t over till you’ve stopped by for dessert at the new Wilton Creamery at 2301 Wilton Drive. This is Wilton Manors’ newest culinary establishment and the Creamery’s Ice Cream Nachos are the newest after dinner sweet tooth craze. The raspberry cream sundae isn’t too shabby either. Down the street at 2031 Wilton Drive you’ll find Double Dippers Ice Cream which offers over 40 flavors of delicious Hershey’s Ice Cream and the motto here is Two Scoops of Salted Carmel Truffle Ice Cream is better than one! Feeling nostalgic? Take a trip down memory lane to one of the last old fashioned walk up window Dairy Queen Ice Cream parlors. This free standing icon is still one of Broward County’s favorite family night out destinations. Let’s face it, The Drive as we once knew it is dying. Yes, my food loving friends, there’s a new Eat Street in town and it’s changing the face of Wilton Manors. Still not convinced? Break out the calculators. Wilton Drive is 7/10ths of a mile long. There are 22 eating establishments on Wilton Drive and four dessert shops. Three more restaurants are planning on opening along Wilton Drive this fall. That’s equals four places to eat every tenth of a mile. You could dine out on Wilton Drive every night for 4 straight weeks and still not reach every restaurant. That’s the new Eat Street USA! Hey! Stop the press… Those two guys that just cruised by on the Drive in The Hopper…Was that Guy Fieri and Anthony Bourdain ?

City looking for suggestions on how to use grant money oney ey BY MARK KAPLAN Islander staff

City officials here have $63,300 in Community Block Grant Funding to spend. They don’t know how to use it yet but they do know this: it has to be spent in the Highlands Estates neighborhood. To help them figure it out they’re looking for input from residents. The Highlands, a dense collection of houses, duplexes, triplexes and apartment and condo units, is the only neighborhood in the city to qualify for the federal funding. Located north of Northeast 26 Street and east of Northeast 6 Avenue across the water from the K-Mart in Oakland Park, the money has to be spent on physical improvements. The city can’t use the funding for social programs because, said City Manager Joseph Gallegos, the county has already allocated Community Block Grant Funding for that purpose. Residents can submit ideas for how to spend the money, either during the next commission meeting on August 12 or to the city manager’s office directly. Resident Michael Rajner suggested that the money could be used for more sidewalks, a dog park or storm shutters for low-income elderly residents. Commissioners Tom Green and Ted Galatis agreed with Rajner on sidewalks. “We will look at that as a possibility,” said Gallegos. Green also proposed the possible addition of shade cover over the play-

Ask Miss Manors Ready for some more advice from someone who isn’t your mother? This month I answer three questions sent in by new residents of Wilton Manors. Let’s get started.

Dear Miss Manors, What are the Wilton Manors Dog Days of Summer?

Signed, Hot Islander Dear Hot Islander, Your choices are the following: a) Those super hot days when all you want to do is lay in the shade with your dog at Richardson Park just after getting your best friend a free ice cream at Dairy Queen. b) A Day when you skip work, stop calorie counting and hold your own private Wilton Drive ice cream taste test. On this one day you will visit Menchies, Wilton Creamery, Dairy Queen, Juice Blendz and Double Dippers and try a new flavor at each place. Frozen Yogurt or Ice Cream. your call. Send your selections ( and samples) of the best Wilton Manors ice cream flavors or frozen yogurt to the Miss Manors Ice Cream Poll, c/o Miss Manors. c) The day you take the kayak out and end up sitting under the Middle River Bridge and falling asleep in the bridge shade. d) The day when you and your friends head over to The Stork and sit on the patio sipping gourmet iced coffees. e.) The day you decide to head over

to Kmart, purchase a four foot plastic pool, put it in your back yard, fill it with cold water and then invite all your neighbors dogs over for the big doggie pool party.

Dear Miss Manors, My love life is a cross between solitaire and sudoku. I’m either playing by myself or trying to make complicated things add up. I’m 36, and my biological clock is ticking. I’m tired of games. I’m considering ordering a husband...or maybe even a wife. I’m normal, fit, nice looking, and fairly certain I don’t emit a foul odor. Why is it so hard to meet someone?

Sincerely, Losing Hope Dear Losing Hope, I’m glad you’re still losing hope because that means you still have some to lose. Let’s re-evaluate before all of it is lost. You are not alone. There are millions of us out there looking for the right person with whom to share our lives. But let me ask you a question. Are you looking for a stable partner to build a life with or someone who makes your feel like you’re riding unicorns on rainbows 24/7? In modern society, we often conflate the two. It’s a lot easier to find the first kind of person, but we usually have more fun along the way when we’re seeking the latter. But I think we all actually want a combination of the two, and that may be the real unicorn-

- a person who strikes the perfect balance of a reliable, fun person who pays the bills, challenges you, and excites you. Before you set out on another search for the right person, take a step back and ask yourself: 1) Am I the right person? 2) Am I looking for the right person or hoping the person right now will be the right person? 3) Am I sure that I don’t emit a foul odor? 4) Am I going out and doing things that make me happy even if I am doing them alone? 5) Am I doing things that will lead me to that someone? 6) What do I really want right now? Am I making steps toward having that or am I taking actions that move me away from what I want? The best part is that no matter the answer, you have all kinds of possibilities for your life. If you’re not conspiring against yourself, the Universe itself may be conspiring to never let you cross paths with your “soulmate”-and that’s okay because your life may look completely different from what you thought it would. That doesn’t mean you can’t be happy. If you don’t like playing games, then stop playing. More importantly, stop allowing other people who play games into your life. If you want to get married, hire a matchmaker or wait it out. If you want a baby, go have one,go adopt one, or enjoy the fact that you can be an amazing auntie without all the bills and diaper changes. One thing is for sure, the more you focus on what you don’t want, the more you will get of it.

nuclear waste spill here that disrupted the local eco system?

Signed, Newbie in Town Dear Newbie, Welcome to waterfront living and, they’re called Iguanas. They’re actually quite harmless but they poop everywhere, eat your grass and you certainly don’t want them around your dogs. My first solution is to get a cat. Iguanas stay far away when there’s a pet cat lurking in the yard. Ace might be your place. Ace Hardware in Oakland Park sells a new Iguana repellent paint for docks and decks that guarantees a secret smell in the spray will keep Iguanas away. Some hardware stores sell a spray invented by a Boca Raton entrepreneur called “Iguana Rid” that is harmless but the label claims that the smell and taste of the spray keeps the reptiles away. There are also several local Iguana Lizard Busters in the area that will trap the lizards and transplant them in more desirable locales. Who you Gonna Call? Iguana Busters! Other than these tips, you may have to wait till South Florida gets its next freeze. Oh, and those crabs you see walking along the canal wall at night are Land Crabs. They have been here for many decades and are relatively harmless. They can however grow up to be giant land crabs and have been measured up to 7 inches long. Keep your sliding glass door closed at night if you’re land crab phobia doesn’t dissipate.

Thanks, Islanders!

Dear Miss Manors, How can I get rid of these giant lizards? They’re driving me crazy! If I wanted Godzilla sized reptiles roaming on my deck and swimming in my pool I would have moved to the Congo. And what’s with those blue crabs walking on land? Was there a

Home Sweet Hut 2014 Island Real Estate Update Breaking News!

Wilton Manors property values rise 10 percent

Property values are on the rise again in the City of Wilton Manors – a 10.11 percent increase over last year. The Island City had the highest increase in property values in all of Broward County at 10.11 percent. In 2013, property values in Wilton Manors increased 6.8 percent. Oakland Park saw a property value increase of 8.36 percent and it was nearly 8 percent in Poinsettia Heights. “Once again, Wilton Manors topped the county in terms of increased property values. This is a tremendous accomplishment for our city,” said Mayor Gary Resnick. “The yearover-year property value increases in Wilton Manors are the result of policies put in place over the past 10 to 15 years,” said Resnick. “These policies have allowed us to invest in our neighborhoods, improve code enforcement, improve commercial districts, strengthen our fiscal resources and adopt a vision that makes Wilton Manors a desirable place to live and to operate a business.” “Whether you’re looking to sell a property in Wilton Manors or invest here, Wilton Manors is hot,” Resnick said.
