Swimming Areas:
Official swimming areas have been desig-
nated for the Alder Lane, Coligny, Driessen, Folly Field and Islanders Beach Parks. The boundaries will be clearly marked on the beach and in the water. Lifeguards are stationed at these designated areas for assistance and beach information.
Beach Marker Signs:
Hilton Head’s beaches are marked near the dune line with signs to let emergency responders know where assistance is needed. They are also useful as a reference point if you or your group should become lost.
Beach Safety Tips:
•Apply and reapply plenty of sunscreen even on cloudy days.
•Wear sunglasses to prevent damage from the sun.
•Stay hydrated and drink plenty of water.
•Be aware of the rules and regulations of the beach. Signs are posted near most beach accesses.
•Don’t leave your kids unsupervised even in guarded areas.
• Note the location of the nearest lifeguard and report any hazardous conditions to him or her.
•Know the name of the beach or hotel/ condo and the beach marker number where you are staying if you should need assistance.
•There are often jellyfish and stingrays, as well as other sea life in and out of the water, which may sting or cut a person. In any situation where first aid is needed, find a lifeguard or seek further medical attention.
•Call or wave for help if you are in trouble.
Water Safety Tips:
•Don’t enter the water if you can’t swim.
•Swim near a lifeguard.
•Ask the lifeguard about any dangers in the water or on the beach, especially if he or she is flying a yellow caution flag.
•Be aware of direction and strength of longshore currents. These currents can take you up and down the beach quickly and cause you or your kids to get lost.
•Don’t let your kids swim unsupervised even in guarded areas.
•Don’t swim alone. Use the buddy system so that someone always knows where you are so they can get help if needed.
•Don’t overestimate your swimming ability. Stay in chest-deep or less water to insure you don’t get stuck in water over your head.
•Don’t rely on flotation devices.
•Swim parallel to shore if you want to swim long distances.
•Don’t swim against the current. Swim across the current to escape the pull.
•Always swim sober.
• Don’t dive into unknown water or shallow breaking waves. Always go feet first.

RECREATIONAL PATHWAYS GUIDE
• Yield to pedestrians. When resting or stopped, please move off the pathway.
• Most sections of the pathways are not illuminated. If you must bike at night, please wear light-colored clothing or carry a flashlight. Bicycles must have a red rear reflector and a headlight when biking at night.
• When approaching slower pathway users from behind, please sound your warning device, or call out, “Passing on your left.” Always pass on the left.
• Bicyclists should always wear a helmet, especially children 12 and under.
The Town of Hilton Head Island provides nearly 60 miles of public pathways and nature trails for the enjoyment of pedestrians and cyclists.
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ON THE PATHS:
• Obey all traffic signals and pathway markings. Stop signs must be obeyed for safety. Bicycles are vehicles and must obey SC traffic laws.
• Travel the pathways at speeds that allow for the safety of pedestrians and other users.
• Never ride within the roadway against traffic. State law requires bicycles to drive like all other vehicles.
• Do not ride on roads when a pathway is available.
• Ride single file and keep a safe distance from other bicyclists.
• WATCH OUT FOR MOTORISTS! Motorists must yield to pedestrians and bicyclists within marked crossings, but they may not see you.
• Make eye contact and use hand signals. Assume other bicyclists and motorists don’t see you. Hand signals tell motorists and other path users what you intend to do and will ensure everyone’s safety on the paths.
• Be courteous, alert and predictable.
• WHITE DIAMONDS INDICATE RESTRICTED TRAVEL LANE: Travel with the flow of traffic.
• WHITE STRIPE & STOP SIGN INDICATE ROAD CROSSING: Stop and look for motorists.
• YELLOW CENTER LINE INDICATES TWO-WAY TRAFFIC: Keep to the right.
• SEVERAL WHITE DIAGONAL STRIPES INDICATE A CROSSWALK: Watch out for other bicyclists, pedestrians and motorists.
• At low tide, the Island’s 12 miles of beaches are ideal for biking. Public beaches are indicated on the Island Events map.
• Our map also shows the existing public pathways. Many kiosks are located along the pathways with an Island-wide map on one side and a localized map of the area on the other.

By Doug Weaver, Director of Instruction, Palmetto Dunes Golf Academy
Parents, teachers and coaches have been stressing proper posture since you learned to sit, right? Proper posture is also important in golf. Poor posture will impact more than your swing. Hunch over your clubs and risk injury. Bow your core too far forward and risk lower back aches.
Use proper golf posture and reap the benefits:
• Better technique Free flo ing motion
• Less likely for injury
• Make more putts
The keys to proper golf posture are simple! But, I like to make them fun.
1 - Salute the general - When you salute, you stand tall (your core is automatically engaged), your shoulders are back, your chest is forward yet relaxed. Your spine is in neutral position.
2 - Alligator Arms - Think of those short little alligator arms, connected right to the body. When you properly grasp your club, your elbows are in/connected to your ribs. The posture sees forearms and shaft at a
Correct Posture in Your Golf Swing Avoids Aches and Injury and Boosts Power
right angle to the spine. This promotes using slow twitch muscles (shoulders) and not using fast twitch muscles (hands or wrists).
3 - Close the car door - Bend at the hips and imagine shutting a car door with your back-end (AKA boxing out in basketball, soccer and hockey).
Combining these three posture elements creates a swinging motion under your chest, an engineer would call it a pendulum. Pendulums have rhythmic pace and aid with accuracy in direction and distance control.
Want to brush up on your golf posture? Come see me at Palmetto Dunes. A quick lesson will have you in neutral spine with an engaged core, your elbows connected and your back-end boxing out it in no time.

WHISPERS OF SUMMER
The Chuck-Will’s-Widow
By Master Naturalist, Kathleen McMenamin, Assistant Director of Outdoor Recreation at the Island Recreation Center
The Chuck-will’s-widow is one of those birds that seems woven into the very fabric of summer in the American South. Its slow, rhythmic call—“chuck-will’swidow, chuck-will’s-widow”—drifts through the warm, humid air as day turns to dusk. For many Lowcountry locals, it simply isn’t summer until this mysterious bird makes itself heard from the pinewoods. Its song is more than just background noise; it’s a memory in motion, echoing across generations.
Though easily heard, Chuck-will’s-widows are far more difficult to spot. Their earthy, mottled brown feathers provide near-perfect camouflage, allowing them to remain motionless and virtually invisible against the forest floor during daylight hours. About the size of a jay, these birds are built for agility. With long wings and a broad tail, they are able to twist and turn skillfully through dense underbrush, typically flying low to the ground but occasionally ascending to treetop level when needed.
As nocturnal hunters, they become active after dusk, gliding silently through the darkness, they search for flying insects, moths, beetles, and ants being favorites. While insects make up the bulk of their diet, Chuck-will’swidows have occasionally been observed preying on small birds and even rodents, swallowing them whole. One of their most remarkable adaptations is their enormous, frog-like mouth, which allows them to catch prey mid-flight. This impressive gape is cleverly hidden by a small, subtle bill—a great example of nature’s practical design. Framing that wide mouth are specialized feathers known as rictal bristles. Functioning much like whiskers, these modified feathers help funnel prey into the mouth while also protecting the bird’s eyes from flying debris and branches as it forages in dense vegetation. In addition to
Photography by Dick Daniels,
their remarkable physical traits, Chuck-will’s-widows and their relatives have captured human imagination for centuries.
Chuck-will’s-widows belong to the nightjar family, which includes other secretive species such as the whip-poor-will and the common nighthawk. All are known for their stealthy nature, soft plumage, and distinctive vocalizations. Over the centuries, these birds have been surrounded by folklore. Perhaps the most well-known tale is the old European myth that nightjars, once called “goatsuckers”, would sneak into barns at night to drink milk from goats. While entirely untrue, it reflects the aura of mystery that still surrounds these birds.
The call of the Chuck-will’swidow is especially prominent in spring, coinciding with the start of breeding season. Interestingly, their singing diminishes significantly once their young have hatched. By late summer, their presence becomes more subtle, and although they may still be heard occasionally, their vocalizations are far less frequent. Around mid-August, they depart abruptly from their breeding grounds in the southeastern United States, migrating to wintering areas in the subtropics, including the West Indies, Mexico, Central America, and parts of northern South America.
In a world filled with colorful birds and bright daytime songs, the Chuck-will’s-widow offers something entirely different: quiet mystery, ancient rhythm, and the comfort of tradition. For those who take the time to listen, this bird is more than just a summer sound, it’s a quiet reminder of nature’s steady rhythms and the subtle beauty found in the stillness of night.

FISHING FOR Red Drum
Article
and photo by
Miles Altman, Bay Runner Fishing Charters
Twenty-five feet below the surface, a marauding school of bull reds swept the sandy bottom in search of prey. Honing in on the smell of fresh-cut mullet, a large bull inhaled the chunk and, upon feeling the bite of the 8/0 circle hook, put his broad shoulders and tail into high gear.
Spring and fall are ideal times to reel in bull reds in Lowcountry waters.
Twenty-five feet above the bottom, on board the Phantom, the medium-heavy spinning rod bucked and then bent double as the reel drag started singing that song all anglers love to hear: line disappearing off the spool at a high rate of speed.
One of the bright spots in our local fisheries is the impressive comeback of the red drum. Years of tight restrictions on bag limits and increased mariculture efforts by the state have resulted in one of our most prolific resurgences. Known by many names — including spottail bass, redfish (smaller ones) and bull reds (bigger ones) — the red drum offers some of the best sportfishing for Lowcountry anglers, regardless of whether they are land-bound or boaters.
Bull reds make two strong runs a year: in April and in the fall, usually September and October. During these times, catching double-digit numbers of 20- to 40-pounders is not uncommon. An occasional bull can be caught any time of the year — and the smaller ones are here all yearlong too — but it’s nothing compared to the spring and fall.
On the Phantom, I like to use medum-heavy spinning rods with 40-pound braid. I fish a fairly tight drag; letting the battle wear on with lighter stuff increases the recovery time and the mortality of the released fish. Multiple hookups are fairly common, creating a Chinese fire drill on board, as anglers strive to keep the strong fish from tangling.
Red drum make for great fishing! When it comes to reeling in big bull reds, the time is now.

The Fish With Human Teeth
By Jessie Renew
he aquatic ecosystem of Hilton Head Island and the Lowcountry is home to a wide variety of animals working in harmony to create the beautiful natural places we enjoy.
Among these is the abundant fishery comprised of hundreds of species of animals, all of whom are woven into the food web. Close to the bottom of the cycle are bivalves and crustaceans which eat the barely visible planktons in the water. These shelled creatures provide food for many fish, birds and mammals, each of which has a particular adaptation to get through the shell and to the tasty meat of the prey. One fascinating fish in this group is the sheepshead, the fish with human teeth!
Sheepshead can be found along the entire Eastern seaboard and the Gulf of America. They are unique in that they stay fairly close to shore and to rocky areas, feeding on the shelled animals that live there. They thrive in
the brackish waters where creeks or rainwater runoff meet salty estuaries. Because of this unique feeding habitat, sheepshead are sensitive to environmental influences and will leave areas that become polluted. In Brooklyn, NY, Sheepshead Bay is named after this fish, but they no longer inhabit the area due to the increase in waterborne pollutants.
Oysters, the favorite prey of the sheepshead, are also very sensitive to changes in water conditions because they are filter feeders and, in the case of oysters, they cannot move to new places when their existing habitat becomes polluted. In order to break through the hard shells of crabs, oysters, mussels, shrimp and barnacles, sheepshead use their uniquely strong teeth. Sheepshead teeth look eerily like human teeth, and perform the same function of grinding and masticating a tough omnivore’s diet. Sheepsheads’ other favorite foods include plants, seaweed and algae.

HILTON HEAD HISTORY
Hilton Head Island has a long and rich history of visitors.
Thousands of Years Ago
Native Americans came to hunt and fish.
Captain William Hilton sailed the British ship Adventure north from Barbados, scouting lands to grow sugar cane for the crown. Approaching the Island by way of Port Royal Sound, he encountered a sliver of land and called it “Hilton’s Headland.”
1520s
Conquistadors explored the area.
1663
17th, 18th & 19th Centuries
For many years, few permanent residents made their home on Hilton Head Island. Though the humid, subtropical climate was ideal for growing agricultural crops like cotton and rice, fear of disease and isolation kept antebellum plantation owners on the mainland. Africans worked the plantations, and their unique blend of African and European traditions gave birth to the Gullah culture, which survives even today.
The Civil War brought big changes to Hilton Head Island. At the onset of the conflict, the South erected Fort Walker to protect the port. When the fort fell, tens of thousands of Union troops, prisoners, missionaries, shopkeepers and enslaved men and women seeking asylum flooded the Island. Suddenly humming with activity, Hilton Head became instrumental in the North’s blockade of nearby Southern ports. In 1863, the town of Mitchelville became the first self-governed town for freed men and women.

After the Civil War, the Island’s population dropped to around 3,000, and by 1940, it had fallen to just over 1,000. Electricity finally came to the Island in 1950 and, six years later, Hilton Head’s very first bridge to the mainland made the area significantly more accessible.

Developer and environmentalist Charles E. Fraser began work on the Island’s first resort, which he called Sea Pines. Fraser is sometimes called the father of the modern resort, and his vision for the Island was progressive, even by modern standards. His determination that no building be “higher than the tallest tree,” as well as his rejection of flashy neon signs, became central to the Island’s distinctive character.
