RECREATIONAL PATHWAYS GUIDE

• Yield to pedestrians. When resting or stopped, please move off the pathway.

• Most sections of the pathways are not illuminated. If you must bike at night, please wear light-colored clothing or carry a flashlight. Bicycles must have a red rear reflector and a headlight when biking at night.

• When approaching slower pathway users from behind, please sound your warning device, or call out, “Passing on your left.” Always pass on the left.

• Bicyclists should always wear a helmet, especially children 12 and under.

The Town of Hilton Head Island provides nearly 60 miles of public pathways and nature trails for the enjoyment of pedestrians and cyclists.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ON THE PATHS:

• Obey all traffic signals and pathway markings. Stop signs must be obeyed for safety. Bicycles are vehicles and must obey SC traffic laws.

• Travel the pathways at speeds that allow for the safety of pedestrians and other users.

• Never ride within the roadway against traffic. State law requires bicycles to drive like all other vehicles.

• Do not ride on roads when a pathway is available.

• Ride single file and keep a safe distance from other bicyclists.

• WATCH OUT FOR MOTORISTS! Motorists must yield to pedestrians and bicyclists within marked crossings, but they may not see you.

• Make eye contact and use hand signals. Assume other bicyclists and motorists don’t see you. Hand signals tell motorists and other path users what you intend to do and will ensure everyone’s safety on the paths.

• Be courteous, alert and predictable.

• WHITE DIAMONDS INDICATE RESTRICTED TRAVEL LANE: Travel with the flow of traffic.

• WHITE STRIPE & STOP SIGN INDICATE ROAD CROSSING: Stop and look for motorists.

• YELLOW CENTER LINE INDICATES TWO-WAY TRAFFIC: Keep to the right.

• SEVERAL WHITE DIAGONAL STRIPES INDICATE A CROSSWALK: Watch out for other bicyclists, pedestrians and motorists.

• At low tide, the Island’s 12 miles of beaches are ideal for biking. Public beaches are indicated on the Island Events map.

• Our map also shows the existing public pathways. Many kiosks are located along the pathways with an Island-wide map on one side and a localized map of the area on the other.

I’ ve met a lot of people thanks to my love of golf, played with a lot of them too. Back in 1989 that included three days with MLB great and two-time World Series Winner Mark McGwire.

We spent a lot of time talking about the similarities between our favorite sports, golf and baseball. You see, Big Mac may be a 583 home run hitter, but he’s also a darn good golfer.

There are reasons. Both games require a rotary motion. Whether the swing of a golf club or the batting and throwing in baseball, the same muscles are being developed.

Those actions in both sports require a backward otion and a forward otion. Also, a need for practice and relaxed muscle memory; relaxed muscles following learned, second-nature skills create more speed and accuracy every time, verses tense muscles trying to force the club, bat and ball to comply.

Additionally, baseball and golf use cleats to take advanta e of round forces. urin training for either sport coaches often focus on footwork, first teaching students to use cleats to grab on to the ground and then to push off.

GOLF and BASEBALL:

Two

American Pastimes, Not as Different as You Think

There is also similarity in the design of a bat and a golf club, although maybe not as noticeable. The handle on both pieces of sporting equipment are light, while the head or barrel on the opposite end is heavy. It’s a design that lets your body tap into centrifu al force the sa e ower avid used to beat Goliath.

With practice and learned skill, you can see centrifugal force in action each time the bat, the club or the ball is released and physics takes over… The bat, the club and the ball accelerate thanks to skill and applied, simple science.

These are just some of the reasons golf is attractive to people of all sizes! The golfer with smaller stature and refined skill can out play and out drive the big golfer with muscle and poor technique nearly every time.

Celebrating the Summer Solstice

This year, on June 21st, we will experience the summer solstice, the longest day and shortest night of the year. During this time, the sun reaches its highest point, bringing a stretch of warm, bright days that have been celebrated by humans since the Stone Age. People around the world continue to honor this momentous occasion with festivals and celebrations. But beyond these traditions, the solstice plays a powerful role in local ecosystems, triggering changes in wildlife behavior, plant growth, and seasonal rhythms throughout the Lowcountry.

The summer solstice is an astronomical event that marks the exact moment when the Earth’s tilt toward the sun is at its greatest. This causes the sun to reach its highest point in the sky at noon, resulting in the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. For several days around the solstice, the sun’s position barely changes, giving us the maximum amount of daylight. It also signals the official start of astronomical summer, the tipping point when days begin to shorten and nights grow longer. The word “solstice” comes from the Latin sol (sun) and stitium (still or stopped), describing the sun’s apparent pause before it begins its southward journey, a pattern observed by ancient civilizations to track the passage of the seasons.

In the Lowcountry, the summer solstice is a time to embrace the season with outdoor gatherings, fresh produce, music, dancing, and bonfires

(safely managed), celebrating both the sun’s peak and the season’s abundance. The solstice also holds cultural significance for Native American tribes like the Catawba Nation and the Lumbee Tribe, who honor the day with rituals passeddown through generations. In 2024, the two tribes symbolized their unity by lighting two fires that merged into one, exchanging gifts such as handmade pottery to celebrate their bond and the power of the season.

The solstice doesn’t just mark a change in tradition, it plays a significant role in shaping our local ecosystems. With the longest days of the year, plants absorb more sunlight, triggering everything from blooming flowers to fresh vegetative growth. Trees even add new layers of sapwood during this time, increasing their girth. Wildlife is also influenced by the extended daylight, with many species adjusting their sleep-wake cycles and behavior to sync with the longer days. This often results in increased activity in feeding and reproduction.

The summer solstice also has a significant impact beneath the surface of South Carolina’s coastal waters. Longer days and warmer temperatures trigger a surge in biological activity within marine ecosystems. Increased sunlight promotes the growth of phytoplankton, the tiny plant-like organisms that form the base of the ocean food chain, which supports everything from small fish to dolphins and shorebirds. Warmer waters also stimulate the metabolism of marine life, leading to more activefish and animals. For many species, the solstice marks a critical period for spawning, prompting fish to seek mates and suitable spawning grounds. The sun’s increased angle also causes higher high tides, which can affect tidal flows and nutrient distribution in coastal waters.

As the summer solstice approaches, it’s a perfect time to celebrate both nature’s beauty and the traditions that connect us to the seasons. Whether you’re enjoying a local festival in the Lowcountry or simply soaking in the extra daylight, the solstice offers a moment to reflect on the incredible impact it has on our environment. From thriving plant life to bustling coastal ecosystems, the solstice reminds us of the natural rhythms that shape our world. So, as you bask in the longest day of the year, take a moment to appreciate the abundance of life all around you, both on land and beneath the waves.

In pursuit of the KING MACKEREL

One of the most awesome sights on the ocean is a free-jumping king mackerel, often referred to as a “skyrocket.” These shiny silver missiles easily reach heights of fifteen to twenty feet above the water. Often, they will skyrocket on live or trolled bait, eating around even the most clever double-hook rigs or treble hooks, and leaving anglers shaking their heads in amazement.

June’s warmer waters call to the kings, as they are teaming with menhaden you can see right off the beach. Spanish mackerel, the kings’ smaller cousins, also run the coast in large schools, and are one of the kings’ favorite meals. These schools of Spanish close to shore draw the Smokers — king mackerel thirty pounds and up — much to the delight of fishermen with smaller boats.

through my light wire like butter.

Smaller kings called “snakes,” typically fifteen pounds or less, are usually found offshore in larger schools. Here, “bump” trolling is a favored method: live baits are pulled slowly across the fishing grounds, the motor taken out of gear from time to time so as not to put too much pressure on the live menhaden or small fish. Kings can also be caught trolling top-water baits or down deep using planers or heavy leads.

When not “skyrocketing” on the bait, the strike of the king can be bone jarring. What follows next are long, searing runs that test the best of tackle. I recommend medium to heavy gear with 30-50 pound braid, with at least a couple of hundred yards. Even then, be prepared to hoist the anchor and give chase!

Still, seasoned anglers grapple with striking the right balance of tackle heavy enough for the fight but light enough to fool this wily creature. Kings have excellent eyesight, and the lighter the leader, the better your chances. Occasionally, however, I have lost a monster king (50 pounds+) when it cut

No matter how you go about it, the hunt for these silver torpedoes is hard to beat for a tackle-busting good time!
