Jarvis Creek Park Located off William Hilton Parkway on Jarvis Creek Road, this 53-acre park includes a large pond and one-mile walking trail around the lake and workout stations. The lakeside paths extend out into wooded areas. The paved trail is equipped with wooden bridges over marshy areas. There is abundant wildlife along this short and paved adventure. Be mindful of allgators lounging on the banks of the lake and watch these amazing creatures from a safe distance. This is a great trail for birding and offers solitude during quieter times of day. If you must bike at night, please wear light-colored clothing or carry a flashlight. Bicycles must have a red rear reflector and a headlight when biking at night. • When approaching slower pathway users from behind, please sound your warning device, or call out, “Passing on your left.” Always pass on the left. • Bicyclists should always wear a helmet, especially children 12 and under. WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ON THE PATHS: • Obey all traffic signals and pathway markings. Stop signs must be obeyed for safety. Bicycles are vehicles and must obey SC traffic laws. • Travel the pathways at speeds that allow for the safety of pedestrians and other users. • Never ride within the roadway against traffic. State law requires bicycles to drive like all other vehicles. • Do not ride on roads when a pathway is available. • Ride single file and keep a safe distance from other bicyclists. • WATCH OUT FOR MOTORISTS! ’ve played a lot of golf in my years and with some of the greatest in the game. It’s a game I love and it’s been my livelihood, playing and teaching. Many of the best lessons I’ve learned have been more non-traditional. Whether you're a seasoned golfer or just getting started, these 10 tips will help you thrive this year.

1. Let others watch your ball. If you look up, you won’t like what you see. 2. Tell one joke per

round. The benefits of laughter will lower your score.

3. When it is breezy,

swing easy. When you swing at 70% you are more likely to strike the sweet spot.

5. Take this simple advice from our Professionals. The fewer the words the better. Feel the swing.

6. Understand that

putting correctly will help you drive the ball better. Fundamentals are similar.

7. Transfer your current skills into golf. What are your hobbies or skills? We can take the fundamentals of that skill and transfer it to golf. To illustrate, keyboarding and piano playing are very similar. 8. Listen for the ball to

drop. Watching the ball roll to the cup changes your alignment.

9. Remember that golf is a game of opposites. The harder you try the worse you do. This always gets giggles and all golfers say it is true.

etting kids outside and onto the water isn’t just about having fun, it’s an essential part of their growth and development. Time spent in nature offers lifelong benefits, from stronger physical and mental health to improved academic performance and critical thinking skills. When children experience different outdoor environments, they begin to think beyond their immediate world, gaining broader perspectives and a deeper connection to the natural world. Learning about local wildlife and ecosystems not only enhances their education but also helps shape the next generation of environmental stewards. After all, in order to protect our natural spaces, kids first need a chance to fall in love with them. Outdoor education experiences help kids build a stronger connection to the place they call home. Through hands-on activities, they learn where locally sourced food comes from and how clean waterways play a vital role in protecting those resources. Paddle sports like kayaking and paddleboarding, go beyond simple recreation. They teach responsibility and valuable life skills such as reading the weather, understanding tides, and navigating the unique ecosystems of the Lowcountry marshes. When taught with care and intention, these experiences foster both respect and a lasting sense of joy in the environment, helping kids develop lifelong habits of stewardship and appreciation for the world around them.

Unfortunately, kids today are spending significantly less time outside than previous generations. A 2018 survey found that while 65% of parents played outside daily as children, only 30% of their kids do the same now. This decline is especially concerning in communities surrounded by natural beauty and waterways. Visitors to our area are far more likely to take their children out on the water than local families. While time on the water benefits all children, it’s especially important for the youth in our own community. These are the kids who will grow up alongside these ecosystems—who will one day be their stewards. Giving them meaningful experiences on the water helps foster a lifelong connection, understanding, and sense of responsibility for the natural resources in their own backyard. Thankfully, local organizations are stepping up to make a difference. Groups like the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, The Outside Foundation, the Boys and Girls Club, and Island Rec Center are working hard to ensure all kids have the opportunity to experience the joys of kayaking, paddleboarding, fishing, and simply being out on the water. To celebrate and expand access to our waterways, The Outside Foundation and Island Recreation Center are teaming up to host Lowcountry PaddleFest, a free community event celebrating life on the water. Taking place on September 6 at the Rowing and Sailing Center, this fun-filled day is open to locals and visitors of all ages. The festivities will kick off with professional paddleboard races, followed by a free kids’ race. Attendees will also have the opportunity to hop into a dragon boat alongside experienced paddlers or explore educational booths highlighting paddle sports and local water programs. On land, you’ll find a lively vendor area, delicious food trucks, and a dedicated Kids Zone packed with activities. The Marvelous MANATEE By Anneliza Itkor

here are few things as glorious as spotting a manatee while out exploring Hilton Head Island’s tidal creeks and rivers. This roly-poly mammal is so unique in appearance that seeing a paddle tail flip up out of the water, or that signature nose breaking the surface of the water as it grabs a snoot full of air, feels a bit like discovering a rare magical beast. Manatees are a relatively new addition to our tidal saltmarsh ecosystem, with “Protect Our Manatee” signs posted in marinas within the last few years. While we may be excited about being able to see these creatures without having to travel south, their presence in our environment is, in fact, a strong indicator of climate change. Each year, the temperatures of our local waters climb a little higher in the summer months, making the trip north for more abundant food resources more attractive for the warm water-loving West Indian Manatee. West Indian Manatees are weirdly wonderful in many ways. Weighing in at 1,000 pounds or more in maturity, they do not have a continuous layer of blubber (like a whale) to keep them warm. When aquatic temperatures drop below 68 degrees, they must seek warmer water to survive. During the winter months, the manatee hangs out primarily in Florida waters. As summer heats up, manatees are now being found as far north as Cape Cod, Massachusetts.

Manatees are not fast swimmers. While capable of speeds up to 20 mph, they generally putter along at around 3 to 5 mph. Due to these slow speeds, algae and barnacles tend to grow on their skin, resulting in a rather unpleasant, odiferous experience. On a positive note, the algae helps protect the manatees from the harmful rays of the sun. Talk about green sunscreen! Manatees are primarily vegetarians. They spend six to eight hours a day eating sea grass and other aquatic vegetation. It is this dietary trait — as well as their slow, lumbering mannerisms — that earn them the nickname “sea cow.” Manatees have no natural predators. Even when a manatee encounters a 12-foot alligator, it will simply nudge the gator out of the way so it can continue on its journey. Sadly, the manatee’s lack of natural predators has not kept it out of danger. Boat strikes and human intrusion into manatee habitat and feeding environments has driven this species almost to extinction. Even though the state of Florida instituted manatee protection laws many years ago, their numbers sunk to the low 4,000s by 2013. Thanks to conservation efforts in Florida and along our Southern coast, manatees were moved to the threatened species list in 2017. However, there is still much work to be done to protect this exotic wonder. There are simple things that can be done to help protect our local manatee population and to support conservancy. First and foremost, don’t litter and never use plastic bags. Trash in our waterways damages the manatee’s habitat. There are many “adopt-a-manatee” programs that can be found online, and these dollars go specifically to support manatee conservation. Report live manatee sightings to the SCDNR at dnr.sc.gov. he dog days of summer are here and August is a great month to catch what I call the “Big Dogs.” This trio of tacklebusters, all available near or inshore, offers anglers big game thrills. Two of these fish, the tarpon and the blacktip shark, often weigh over 100 pounds and put on awesome aerial displays. People usually catch the big blacktip while tarpon fishing or vice versa, making it easy to get two of the three “Big Dogs” in one spot. The third is the jack crevalle, weighing up to 40 pounds. But hold on! These fish fight like 100-pounders. The tenacious jack crevalle often takes much longer to bring to the rod tip than the other two, even though they are twice as big. Recently, while fishing for Spanish mackerel with light tackle, a huge jack inhaled a live menhaden. The 20-pound test line was no match for this fish and we chased him two-and-a-half miles for just short of two hours. The jack (in the picture) weighed over 35 pounds. The big jacks offer no aerial displays, but will burn a reel up with long searing runs. Roaming the sound and sandbars in large 72 Island Events August 2025

packs, they are visible on the surface with their fins sticking up. Anglers then present a fly or a popping lure. Whether on a lure or live bait, top water strikes come swiftly, usually accompanied by an explosion. The tarpon and blacktip are more often than not fished while on anchor. Chumming helps and live or dead menhaden are effective. It’s good to have an anchor ball ready to pitch when the hookup ensues because there is little time to pull the anchor in. These fish can take hundreds of yards of line in just a few minutes. August is the time when trophy fish are close to shore. If you’re looking to catch a big one, then get out and go fishing this month!
