• When approaching slower pathway users from behind, please sound your warning device, or call out, “Passing on your left.” Always pass on the left.
• Bicyclists should always wear a helmet, especially children 12 and under.
The Town of Hilton Head Island provides nearly 60 miles of public pathways and nature trails for the enjoyment of pedestrians and cyclists.
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ON THE PATHS:
• Obey all traffic signals and pathway markings. Stop signs must be obeyed for safety. Bicycles are vehicles and must obey SC traffic laws.
• Travel the pathways at speeds that allow for the safety of pedestrians and other users.
• Never ride within the roadway against traffic. State law requires bicycles to drive like all other vehicles.
• Do not ride on roads when a pathway is available.
• Ride single file and keep a safe distance from other bicyclists.
• WATCH OUT FOR MOTORISTS! Motorists must yield to pedestrians and bicyclists within marked crossings, but they may not see you.
• Make eye contact and use hand signals. Assume other bicyclists and motorists don’t see you. Hand signals tell motorists and other path users what you intend to do and will ensure everyone’s safety on the paths.
• Be courteous, alert and predictable.
• WHITE DIAMONDS INDICATE RESTRICTED TRAVEL LANE: Travel with the flow of traffic.
• WHITE STRIPE & STOP SIGN INDICATE ROAD CROSSING: Stop and look for motorists.
• YELLOW CENTER LINE INDICATES TWO-WAY TRAFFIC: Keep to the right.
• SEVERAL WHITE DIAGONAL STRIPES INDICATE A CROSSWALK: Watch out for other bicyclists, pedestrians and motorists.
• At low tide, the Island’s 12 miles of beaches are ideal for biking. Public beaches are indicated on the Island Events map.
• Our map also shows the existing public pathways. Many kiosks are located along the pathways with an Island-wide map on one side and a localized map of the area on the other.

Start Your Kids Now
For a Lifetime Love of Golf
One of the most common questions I get from parents is, “When is the right time to introduce my child to golf?” My answer is always the same: Now is the time to start! Whether your child is three or thirteen, early exposure to the game lays the foundation for a lifelong passion.
At Palmetto Dunes, we welcome young players of all skill levels and ages. From toddlers to teens, our programs are designed to nurture confidence, coordination, and character—on and off the course. Parents often marvel at how quickly their children absorb lessons. That’s no accident. We combine expert instruction with engaging activities to make learning fun and memorable.
Lil Swingers (Ages 3+)
This playful, song-filled class introduces the basics of golf in a fun and nurturing environment. With a 5:1 student-teacher ratio and parent participation encouraged, even our youngest golfers gain skills and confidence with every swing.
Junior Clinics (Ages 8-17)
Our motto: Fun, Friends, and Fresh Air. These dynamic clinics focus on mastering three key golf shots per day, alongside

instruction in rules and etiquette. Kids leave each session with new skills and a big smile.
Don’t worry about equipment—we provide everything your junior golfer needs to get started.
Still unsure? Here are a few quotes from our students on why they love it:
•“The ball waits on me.”
•“No one’s yelling at me to run.”
•“It’s actually fun!”
Golf is more than a game! It’s a journey. Come plant the seeds with us this summer at Palmetto Dunes. Watch your child grow into a confident, capable golfer for life.
North Carolina and South Carolina PGA Teacher of the Year, Doug Weaver is the Director of Instruction at the Palmetto Dunes Golf Academy. He conducts “Where Does the Power Come From?” a free interactive clinic and demonstration every Mon. at 4 p.m. at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Course. Volunteer for a free lesson and some will win prizes! Call (866) 455-6890 or go to www.palmettodunes.com for more information.

South Carolina’s Summer Lights: The Magic of Fireflies
Article by Master Naturalist, Kathleen McMenamin at the Island Recreation Center
There’s something undeniably nostalgic about fireflies, those tiny, twinkling lights drifting through warm summer evenings. The state is home to at least 26 species of these fascinating insects, also known as lightning bugs. Their bioluminescent glow varies in color, depending on the species, adding to their mysterious charm. While some species have adapted well to living near people, others are in decline due to habitat development. Still, fireflies remain what scientists call a “charismatic” insect, they are easily recognizable and widely beloved, a rare blend of science and sentiment flickering through the dusk.
Fireflies live all over the world, on every continent except Antarctica, thriving in environments ranging from tropical rainforests to temperate woodlands. In the U.S., they’re especially common east of the Mississippi, where they light up parks, gardens, meadows, and forest edges from Florida to southern Canada. Their habitats also support their diets: as larvae, fireflies are tiny but fierce predators, feeding on snails, worms, and slugs, which they paralyze with a numbing chemical before eating. As adults, their diets vary. Some sip nectar or nibble on pollen, others prey on fellow fireflies, and some don’t eat at all.
Despite their name, fireflies aren’t flies at all. They’re soft-winged beetles with a rare biological trick up their sleeves: the ability to produce their own light. This natural glow, known as bioluminescence, is created in special organs in their abdomens, where chemicals produced by their bodies mix with enzymes, oxygen, and a bit of cellular energy to create that familiar flicker. Scientists believe fireflies control their flashes by regulating how much oxygen flows to these light-producing organs. You might also hear about glow worms, which are often confused with fireflies. Glowworms are either the larvae or wingless adult females of certain firefly species. Like fireflies, they glow, but they don’t have wings. To make things more confusing, there are also glow worms that aren’t related to fireflies at all, despite the name.
Fireflies likely developed their signature glow as a way to ward off predators, but these days it’s mostly about romance. Each species has its own unique flash pattern that helps them attract the right mate. While we usually picture fireflies as glowing specks on warm
summer nights, not all of them light up. Some species are active during the day and use scent, rather than light, to find each other. Most male fireflies flash independently, but some take it up a notch and synchronize their flashes with others when gathered in large groups. In North America, two of the most famous synchronizing species are Photinus carolinus, found in the Appalachian Mountains and Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and Photuris frontalis, which lights up places like Congaree National Park right here in South Carolina.
Fireflies are facing challenges as many of their native habitats disappear due to rapid changes in our lands and watersheds. Because there hasn’t been much systematic monitoring, it’s hard to know exactly how much their populations are declining. Adult fireflies live only a few weeks, but some spend up to two years in their larval stage, hidden in dirt, leaf litter, and old wood. This means protecting their larval habitats is especially important for their survival.

ANGLING FOR JACKS
Article and

by Miles Altman, Bay Runner Fishing Charters
From a distance, it looked like a clump of reeds sticking out of the calm waters of Calibogue Sound. But there are no reeds in Calibogue. Drawing closer, the “reeds” were moving and dark shadows followed beneath. These were no reeds — they were big jack crevalle! What had appeared to be reeds were actually second dorsals, barely breaking the water’s surface as they cruised the Sound looking for prey.
Jack crevalle inhabit our waters in summer, smaller ones often schooling with Spanish mackerel and bluefish. The bigger ones tend to school on their own, moving with the tide, back and forth between the ocean and the sounds in search of food. This pattern has made them a dog days’ favorite, as they often weigh upwards of the thirty-pound mark and are second only to their cousin, the amberjack. Amberjack can average fifty pounds or better and are found offshore more than their smaller cousins…but both are formidable opponents on the end of a line.
The most common way to target jacks is by stalking. Boats cruise up and down tide or rip lines looking for the schools of big jacks. Other than the illusion of “reeds,” anglers look for groups of large “v” wakes or dark spots. Once the jacks are spotted, the angler must be positioned within casting distance and present a live bait or an artificial — swimming or popping plugs both seem to be effective. It’s very exciting to watch a thirty-pound fish attack your bait or lure!
Once hooked, even on heavier tackle, jacks will put up an extended, brutal battle. One fish we hooked (blindly) on

a light tackle took more than two hours and four miles before we finally caught him. And that was only after several attempts at charging him with the boat when he surfaced! Pound for pound, you will be hard pressed to find a tougher fighting fish than the jack.
Early morning is best for hunting jacks in the Sound, then moving out further to the sand bars and shallows off the beach as the boating traffic increases. Jacks can be skittish but once you are hooked up, it’s game on!
