Swimming Areas:
Official swimming areas have been desig-
nated for the Alder Lane, Coligny, Driessen, Folly Field and Islanders Beach Parks. The boundaries will be clearly marked on the beach and in the water. Lifeguards are stationed at these designated areas for assistance and beach information.
Beach Marker Signs:
Hilton Head’s beaches are marked near the dune line with signs to let emergency responders know where assistance is needed. They are also useful as a reference point if you or your group should become lost.
Beach Safety Tips:
•Apply and reapply plenty of sunscreen even on cloudy days.
•Wear sunglasses to prevent damage from the sun.
•Stay hydrated and drink plenty of water.
•Be aware of the rules and regulations of the beach. Signs are posted near most beach accesses.
•Don’t leave your kids unsupervised even in guarded areas.
• Note the location of the nearest lifeguard and report any hazardous conditions to him or her.
•Know the name of the beach or hotel/ condo and the beach marker number where you are staying if you should need assistance.
•There are often jellyfish and stingrays, as well as other sea life in and out of the water, which may sting or cut a person. In any situation where first aid is needed, find a lifeguard or seek further medical attention.
•Call or wave for help if you are in trouble.
Water Safety Tips:
•Don’t enter the water if you can’t swim.
•Swim near a lifeguard.
•Ask the lifeguard about any dangers in the water or on the beach, especially if he or she is flying a yellow caution flag.
•Be aware of direction and strength of longshore currents. These currents can take you up and down the beach quickly and cause you or your kids to get lost.
•Don’t let your kids swim unsupervised even in guarded areas.
•Don’t swim alone. Use the buddy system so that someone always knows where you are so they can get help if needed.
•Don’t overestimate your swimming ability. Stay in chest-deep or less water to insure you don’t get stuck in water over your head.
•Don’t rely on flotation devices.
•Swim parallel to shore if you want to swim long distances.
•Don’t swim against the current. Swim across the current to escape the pull.
•Always swim sober.
• Don’t dive into unknown water or shallow breaking waves. Always go feet first.

• The drivers already in the roundabout have the right of way.
• Always yield to them before entering the roundabout.
• A roundabout is like any other owing traffic don t stop in the middle.
s annoying as it can be to get behind a big slow vehicle, it s even worse to be stuck beside it in a roundabout. Just wait.
ike with intersections, don t change lanes while in the roundabout.
Beaches:
There are a few rules we all need to keep in mind to ensure a safe experience for everyone who comes to Hilton Head. It is therefore very important to remember that there is:
o sleeping on the beach between midnight and 6 a.m.
o driving on the beach
o horses on the beach
o fires on the beach
o fireworks on the beach (you need a permit to set off fireworks anywhere on ilton ead, and an offense will result in a misdemeanor and a 500 fine)
o pets on the beach between 10 a.m.-5 p.m. the riday before Memorial Day through Labor Day
RECREATIONAL PATHWAYS GUIDE
• Yield to pedestrians. When resting or stopped, please move off the pathway.
• Most sections of the pathways are not illuminated. If you must bike at night, please wear light-colored clothing or carry a flashlight. Bicycles must have a red rear reflector and a headlight when biking at night.
• When approaching slower pathway users from behind, please sound your warning device, or call out, “Passing on your left.” Always pass on the left.
• Bicyclists should always wear a helmet, especially children 12 and under.
The Town of Hilton Head Island provides nearly 60 miles of public pathways and nature trails for the enjoyment of pedestrians and cyclists.
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ON THE PATHS:
• Obey all traffic signals and pathway markings. Stop signs must be obeyed for safety. Bicycles are vehicles and must obey SC traffic laws.
• Travel the pathways at speeds that allow for the safety of pedestrians and other users.
• Never ride within the roadway against traffic. State law requires bicycles to drive like all other vehicles.
• Do not ride on roads when a pathway is available.
• Ride single file and keep a safe distance from other bicyclists.
• WATCH OUT FOR MOTORISTS! Motorists must yield to pedestrians and bicyclists within marked crossings, but they may not see you.
• Make eye contact and use hand signals. Assume other bicyclists and motorists don’t see you. Hand signals tell motorists and other path users what you intend to do and will ensure everyone’s safety on the paths.
• Be courteous, alert and predictable.
• WHITE DIAMONDS INDICATE RESTRICTED TRAVEL LANE: Travel with the flow of traffic.
• WHITE STRIPE & STOP SIGN INDICATE ROAD CROSSING: Stop and look for motorists.
• YELLOW CENTER LINE INDICATES TWO-WAY TRAFFIC: Keep to the right.
• SEVERAL WHITE DIAGONAL STRIPES INDICATE A CROSSWALK: Watch out for other bicyclists, pedestrians and motorists.
• At low tide, the Island’s 12 miles of beaches are ideal for biking. Public beaches are indicated on the Island Events map.
• Our map also shows the existing public pathways. Many kiosks are located along the pathways with an Island-wide map on one side and a localized map of the area on the other.

The Four Boxes to Better Golf
By Doug Weaver, Director of Instruction, Palmetto Dunes Golf Academy
Jack Nicklaus is facing down the last hole of the PGA Tour event. A birdie will put him in the playoff. An eagle will win it. He has a three wood over water, requiring a fade to the pin. Nicklaus stares at the gap et een the all and the flag his eyes tracking the lines. He approaches the ball, settles in, waggles and then hesitates. Instead of taking the shot, he steps back, places the three wood in the bag and wipes his hands.
The swelling crowd holds its breath as i klaus finally returns to take the shot. He steps back into his routine, staring down the line between the ball and the flag tra king the all s imaginary flight He s ings sending the all flying over the ater t oun es onto the green to ard the in no ust five feet away. He makes the putt, an eagle. Nicklaus has won the tournament.
Later, in the press room, everyone wanted to know: what were you doing for so long before you hit that incredible shot? “I went to the movies,” he said. Nicklaus explained that just as in a movie, he watches himself performing the shot orre tly ith the all flying toward the pin. His body responds by creating the feeling he needs to hit the desired shot. He had lost the feeling during his first attem t so he ent a k to the movies, found the feeling and trusted it.
The Four Boxes
is similar in his approach. It is a pre-shot routine that organi es and sim lifies our thoughts into a feeling that we must trust.
Rest Box
is the iggest ox filled ith the many thoughts that we need to simplify. Here, we begin breathing systematically, becoming aware of any tension and eliminating it.
Memory Box
is a smaller box, and here we choose to remember a similar shot that was successful. We picture it, and dwelling on it triggers positive emotions and feelings.
Think Box
is even smaller, where we consciously execute the moves required for the desired shot. We practice with the purpose of creating a simple and encouraging feeling. We take only that feeling ith us into the final ox
Play Box
is the smallest box. No other thoughts are allowed here; we are focused only on trusting the feeling.
Learning to lean into the oy of laying is hat it s all about. Come join us on the green!

The Blue Crab’s Molting Mystery: From Marsh to Market
By Kathleen McMenamin, Master Naturalist
Spring has arrived, bringing with it one of the Lowcountry's most cherished seasonal delicacies, soft-shell crab. From April to June, warming waters trigger local blue crabs to begin both their breeding and molting processes. As they grow, they shed their outer shells, leaving them temporarily soft and entirely edible. This period is also crucial for females, as they mate only once during their final molt, when they are in their soft-shell state. This brief window of tenderness makes soft-shell crabs a sought-after treat, eliminating the need to crack through a hard shell to enjoy their sweet, delicate meat. For seafood lovers, soft-shell crabs provide a uniquely flavorful experience that embodies the season.
The blue crab (Callinectes sapidus), meaning "savory beautiful swimmer," is known for its striking coloration and adaptability. Males, known as 'Jimmies,' have bright blue claws, while mature females, or 'sooks,' display orange or red-tipped claws. Males typically grow larger, reaching up to ten inches across. As they mature, males retain a T-shaped abdomen, while females transition from a triangular shape to a rounded form after their final molt.
Blue crabs must shed their hard exoskeletons to grow, with smaller crabs molting every few days and larger ones every 20 to 50 days. A few days before molting, a narrow white line appears on their swimming legs, which gradually turns red just before shedding. The molting process itself takes only minutes, during which the crab pushes out of its old shell. The newly molted crab is soft, limp, and swells by 25–35% before hardening over the next few days.
Mating occurs in brackish water starting in March and lasting through November, with spawning peaks taking place March through July. Blue crabs mate in low to moderate salinity waters following an elaborate courtship ritual. A male pairs with a female about to undergo her final molt, cradling and carrying her until she sheds her shell. Mating occurs while she is still soft, and the sperm transferred by the male is stored in her body, allowing her to fertilize eggs over the next one to two years.
In early April, a "run" of peeler crabs can last about two weeks. Fishermen use "peeler pots" with large males to attract females ready to molt and mate,
keeping them in shedding tanks until they molt. Once shed, soft-shell crabs are quickly refrigerated and sold, prized for their delicate, flavorful meat. South Carolina’s soft shell crab industry remains under-exploited but holds significant economic value for certain operators. Because soft-shell crabs are both difficult to collect and highly sought after in culinary markets, they command premium prices.
Beyond their biological significance, blue crabs play a vital role in both commercial and recreational fishing industries. Before 1975, soft-shell crabs were primarily a byproduct of the hard crab fishery, making up 5% or less of the total catch. Over the past 20 years, however, the industry has grown in both size and value. Crabbers separate pre-molt “peeler” crabs, mainly females, from their catch and sell them to dealers who keep them in tanks until they molt. In South Carolina, harvesting and processing soft shell crabs under five inches is legal with a permit. Specialized gear, such as baited pots that attract pubertal-molt females and habitat traps that provide shelter, has improved harvesting efficiency. The availability of premolt crabs is influenced by water temperature and lunar phases, with peak harvests occurring in April-May and a secondary peak in September-October.
Join the Island Recreation Center at our next Family Fishing event, on Friday, April 25. There will be a short presentation, and then a group fish off the dock focused on crabbing. Led by Captain Michael Thomson of Fins and Feathers Guide Services.

COBIA SEASON –––
It’s time to reel in these tasty battlers within well-defined limits.
Article and photo by
Miles Altman,
Bay Runner Fishing Charters
It has been sad to watch the decline of this magnificent fish in coastal South Carolina. The Broad River was once touted as the “Cobia Capital of the World” by fishing magazines. It used to be easy to catch multiple monsters in a single trip.
Those were the days when a handful of boats were fishing. Before the decline, it was nothing to see 300 to 400 boats fishing the Broad River. As with most natural resources, when the population of people exceeds the supply, we lose access to the resource and are forced to rethink our resource management strategy.
I talked to several anglers who specialize in sight fishing. On calm days, they reported seeing more cobia in the river last year than in previous years.
Often confused for sharks (which they love to follow, along with rays, buoys, etc.), the average cobia usually weighs around 35 to 40 pounds and can reach 60 pounds for the grownups. Most of the time, they put up a tackle-busting battle, but are curious and will often swim right up to the boat, with or
without a hook in them.
Once they know the hook is there, watch out! You’re in for a battle.
Many times, you will have them swimming around the boat and they will not touch a bait, making you want to pull your hair out. One thing everyone agrees on — they're delicious. Cobia is a very firm fish that lends itself well to the grill. It’s also delicious prepared in any way that you prefer.
So, all in all, cobia offers excellent game fishing and even better eating. I can’t wait to catch my first one this year.
Please help this great species: take only what you need and can use … and let the rest go, so we can rebuild this important fishery.
Capt. Miles Altman of Bay Runner Fishing Charters has more than 42 years experience fishing the waters surrounding ilton ead sland. The Fin-atic boat can accommodate up to 12 passengers. Contact Miles at (843) 290- 955 to book a charter fishing trip.

Get Outside for Your mind!
By Jessie Renew
Over the course of my career as a kayak guide and instructor, I have taken tens of thousands of people out on the water. Some are outdoor enthusiasts comfortable with the environment, while many others are enjoying an outdoor sport for the first time.
Through my experiences with these folks, I have observed the immense positive effects of simply being outdoors. Kayaking has the added benefit of exercise, which is great for your body. However, the simple act of not being inside is a scientifically proven way to improve your mood and psychological health as well.
Stress is arguably the greatest threat to our mental state. It is shown to weaken the immune system and cause high blood pressure, fatigue, depression, anxiety and even heart attack. Time and again, outdoor activity has been proven to lower heart rate and reduce stress. While the exact mechanics of how this occurs is not well known, the act of seeing wide open spaces tends to make us feel small, and our problems even smaller!
In my career, I have often encountered stressedout families on vacation, trying to make it work with the competing demands of the different members. After just a few minutes on the water, their shoulders relax, they breathe more deeply and slowly, they start smiling and having fun together again.
There are a number of programs around the world that use outdoor experiences as a form of therapy for children from complicated backgrounds. At these schools, studies have been conducted on the healing effects of outdoor recreation. This
research has shown that such experiences increase one’s overall selfconcept, feelings of competency, self-image and independence.
I have had the privilege of conducting programs for the local Kids in Kayaks program, where I’ve seen firsthand the transformational effect that having fun outside can have on children. These middle schoolers are apprehensive at first, trying to act cool in their cliques. Once in kayaks, they see their own ability move the vessel around independently, steering and powering it where they want to go. It gives them a boost, and suddenly they are engaged in their surroundings and interested in talking to one another and me about the experience.
Another way that the outdoors has a positive effect on the mind is through the stimulation of creativity. From the paintings of animals and trees in the caves of Lascaux, France, to the swirling wheat fields of Van Gogh, all of the greatest artists in history have been inspired by nature. When I’m not a kayak instructor, I’m an artist, and in my personal experience, there is no better way to muster creative energy than by observing and experiencing the variations of color, texture and movement in the natural world.
So this spring enjoy some time outside. Your mind will thank you!

HILTON HEAD HISTORY
Hilton Head Island has a long and rich history of visitors.
Thousands of Years Ago
Native Americans came to hunt and fish.
Captain William Hilton sailed the British ship Adventure north from Barbados, scouting lands to grow sugar cane for the crown. Approaching the Island by way of Port Royal Sound, he encountered a sliver of land and called it “Hilton’s Headland.”
1520s
Conquistadors explored the area.
1663
17th, 18th & 19th Centuries
For many years, few permanent residents made their home on Hilton Head Island. Though the humid, subtropical climate was ideal for growing agricultural crops like cotton and rice, fear of disease and isolation kept antebellum plantation owners on the mainland. Africans worked the plantations, and their unique blend of African and European traditions gave birth to the Gullah culture, which survives even today.
The Civil War brought big changes to Hilton Head Island. At the onset of the conflict, the South erected Fort Walker to protect the port. When the fort fell, tens of thousands of Union troops, prisoners, missionaries, shopkeepers and enslaved men and women seeking asylum flooded the Island. Suddenly humming with activity, Hilton Head became instrumental in the North’s blockade of nearby Southern ports. In 1863, the town of Mitchelville became the first self-governed town for freed men and women.

After the Civil War, the Island’s population dropped to around 3,000, and by 1940, it had fallen to just over 1,000. Electricity finally came to the Island in 1950 and, six years later, Hilton Head’s very first bridge to the mainland made the area significantly more accessible.

Developer and environmentalist Charles E. Fraser began work on the Island’s first resort, which he called Sea Pines. Fraser is sometimes called the father of the modern resort, and his vision for the Island was progressive, even by modern standards. His determination that no building be “higher than the tallest tree,” as well as his rejection of flashy neon signs, became central to the Island’s distinctive character.
