Welcome to the 2019-2020 School Year: A Message from Superintendent Aaron Sinclair

Fall is a time of change. Weather patterns shift along with work schedules and routines as many of us transition back to school. This is always an especially exciting time at Sauk Rapids-Rice Public Schools, and I am excited to welcome students and staff back as we begin the 2019-2020 school year.

You may see some notable changes around the district this fall. We heard from the community that ensuring facility and student safety are critically important—and we could not agree more. Work on these improvements began last April and are financed with district funds and state grants. Newly installed safe and secure entrances at all district schools are being completed this fall. These improvements are paired with new visitor management processes and upgraded and additional security cameras to keep students safe. You can read about those changes in detail on the next page.

You may have also noticed that this publication has a fresh look on the cover. Following your suggestions, the district is fine-tuning communication efforts and part of that work involves updating the ways in which we tell our story. We want to share information about what is going on in our schools and celebrate the positive ways our schools and community interact.

We want to make sure the district is communicating in the best ways possible.

Finally, I am excited to announce that Sauk Rapids-Rice Public Schools has been honored as one of the Star Tribune Top 150 Workplaces in Minnesota for 2019. Top Workplaces recognizes the most progressive organizations in Minnesota, and I am proud to say our district is among them! This honor is based on a survey of employee opinions about engagement, organizational health and satisfaction, with responses from over 140,000 employees at Minnesota public, private and nonprofit workplaces. We received this award as a result of our hardworking and dedicated staff. This honor is reflective of the Sauk Rapids-Rice community—a place that values caring schools where there is a path to learning for each student. The district’s 681 employees support over 4,500 students to make that possible each day. This school district is an incredible place and it is a privilege to work alongside such phenomenal people.

Many amazing things are happening in the Sauk Rapids-Rice Public Schools and I am excited about the positive changes. Let’s make the 2019-2020 school year a great one!

Safe and Secure Entrances at Sauk Rapids-Rice Public Schools Ensuring Sauk Rapids-Rice students have a safe and secure environment to learn and grow is an immensely important priority for the district. During the last year we engaged in a process to examine emergency planning in regard to prevention, preparedness, response and recovery. This process informed a series of important safety and security projects which are currently underway throughout the district.

The safety and security of our students and staff are a vital component to accomplishing the district’s mission to provide a world-class education in a collaborative environment that inspires every learner to think, achieve and care.

The district consulted and collaborated with the Sauk Rapids and Rice Police Departments, the Benton County Sheriff’s Office and the Benton and Stearns County Emergency Managers with regard to the safe and secure entrance plans as well as emergency prevention, preparedness, response and recovery.

In addition, the Minnesota Department of Public Safety and Homeland Security/Emergency Management guided the district through a Safe School Facility Assessment that was developed by the Homeland Security and Emergency Management Minnesota School Safety Center.

Through the use of the district’s fund balance and a Minnesota School Safety Grant, construction began in April to establish safer and more secure entrances for each school building. Construction crews have been working diligently throughout the summer to complete these safe and secure entrance projects.

Another series of projects underway improve safety and security through updates to technological systems.

These district-wide projects include: • Expansion of the security camera system and updates which will provide high quality and reliable video security; • Application of a hand-held radio system, which improves connectivity between key staff members, administration and law enforcement; and

• Implementation of the SafeVisitor management system, which establishes a standard check-in protocol at each building.

District administration and staff continue to participate in active threat training opportunities in conjunction with local law enforcement, first responders, city and county officials and community members. The district also partners with GeoComm in the Tri-County School Safety Pilot Project. GeoComm has a national reputation as a leading provider of public geographic information systems (GIS) to route emergency calls to the appropriate call center, map the caller’s location and guide emergency responders to the scene of the incident on mobile displays within police, fire and ambulance vehicles.

The safety and security of our students and staff are a vital component to accomplishing the district’s mission to provide a world-class education in a collaborative environment that inspires every learner to think, achieve and care.

Sauk Rapids-Rice Public Schools Recognized as a Star Tribune 2019 Top Workplace in Minnesota

W

orking within an organization that offers great culture is about aligning with your workplace’s vision of the world, being challenged by your peers and feeling valued as a contributing part of a team. Sauk Rapids-Rice public school employees say they find these key elements in their workplaces.

Their feedback earned Sauk Rapids-Rice Public Schools recognition as one of the most progressive organizations in Minnesota this year. The Star Tribune honored the district with its 150 Top Workplace Award in June.

Qualification for the award is based on employee opinions measuring engagement, organizational health and satisfaction. The analysis included responses from over 140,000 employees at public, private and nonprofit organizations. Rankings are based on survey information collected by Energage, an independent company specializing in employee engagement and retention. Sauk Rapids-Rice Schools ranked 29th in the top large employer category within the PreK-12 Education sector.

“The district is an incredible place to work as a result of the quality staff,” said Superintendent Aaron Sinclair. ”The commitment by staff members to connect with and provide a path for each child is what helps maintain the small town feel of the schools. It is an honor and privilege to work with such a group of dedicated professionals.”

This is the first time Sauk Rapids-Rice Public Schools has earned this recognition. To qualify for Top Workplaces, an organization must have more than 50 employees in Minnesota. Over 2,000 companies were invited to participate. Rankings were composite scores calculated purely on the basis of employee responses.

Sauk Rapids-Rice Public Schools serves more than 4,500 students with three elementary schools (K-5), one middle school (6-8), a high school (9-12) and early childhood and adult education programs. There are currently 681 employees in the district, and that number includes teachers, paraprofessionals, administrative support staff, food service staff, custodians and transportation staff.

The school district strives to provide a path to learning for all students through quality programming from hardworking, competent staff. The Sauk Rapids and Rice communities are a strong support for the schools and the district works to prepare students for successful post-secondary experiences, careers and to make positive contributions in the region and larger world.

The Star Tribune has been honoring organizations with the Top Workplaces award for 10 years. A full list of those selected for the honor is available at StarTribune.com/topworkplaces2019. This list was also published in the Star Tribune’s Top Workplaces special section on Sunday, June 16.

Grading Reform:

The district takes a systematic look at homework During the 2018-2019 school year, the district started studying grading reform in a more systematic way. Part of this study led a team to look at elements of grading, including a deeper look into homework from the perspective of the students, parents and teachers. There was an amazing response to the survey. Thank you to all who completed it; your feedback is greatly appreciated.

As a district, we continue to review and evaluate all feedback, but wanted to share some preliminary results at this time. Students in grades 1-2, grades 3-5 and grades 6-12 were given age-appropriate surveys in grade level groups.

Six hundred twenty-seven first and second grade students responded to the survey, with 94.9% stating they have homework and 81% indicating they are able to complete the work during the school day. Eightyeight percent stated homework helped them learn, and in the optional comments section, many students shared they enjoyed some homework.

Students in grades 3-5 were asked slightly more specific questions related to core classes such as math, language arts, science and social studies; 562 students responded to the survey. Seventy-six percent responded that they usually get all their homework done, and 68% stated that their teachers give them time to complete the work in class. The top two reasons students reported they do not complete homework included: there are too many distractions at home, and that there were commitments outside of school such as athletics and clubs that make homework completion a challenge.

In grades 6-12, 1,036 students completed the survey.

Ninety-three percent stated they usually get all their homework done, and 47.5% added that their teachers gave them time to complete the work in class. The top two reasons students report homework was not completed included: having commitments (athletics, clubs, work, etc.) after school that make homework completion challenging, and being tired. Students in grades 3-12 were also asked questions about specific content areas which will provide valuable feedback to the district as well.

Six hundred sixty-five parents/guardians with children from early childhood through grade 12 responded to the survey, with the highest response rate from parents/guardians of students in grades 2-9. Fiftyfour percent of parents responded that their child spends 0-30 minutes a night on homework and 19% responded with 30 minutes to one hour on average per night. Fifty-eight percent shared that they believe no homework should be given over the weekend. The two most frequent circumstances that were reported to influence their child’s ability to complete homework were their child needing “downtime,� and their child being involved in outside activities. Parents/Guardians said that teachers could improve the homework process for their child by ensuring that students understand homework prior to leaving class.

Teachers with students in early childhood through grade 5 reported the primary reason for assigning homework was to practice a skill, and the strategy they found most helpful in supporting students with homework was to be deliberate with what they assign for homework. At the secondary level (grades 6-12), teachers reported the primary reasons for assigning homework is to allow students to practice a skill and check for understanding. Providing feedback to students, and being purposeful about what they assign, were the strategies teachers reported as being the most helpful when supporting students with homework.

Data included here provides a very broad look at the information that was collected from stakeholders, and the district looks forward to digging deeper to guide the work we are doing to reform grading and ensure high levels of learning for all students. Thank you, again, to all who participated and provided feedback.

An easy place to start is bedtime. There is a lot of research to support the importance of getting a good night’s sleep to improve our overall health.

A consistent routine allows us to fall asleep faster.

Here is an easy bedtime routine to start. A half-hour before bed, turn off all electronics. Use this half hour to brush your teeth, wash your face and wind down from the day. When you get into bed, read for ten minutes. Then, close your eyes to go to sleep. If you cannot fall asleep, read for ten more minutes. Repeat this pattern. Your body will adjust to this routine and falling asleep will become easier.

Another routine to consider starting is waking up.

Will your child(ren) eat breakfast at home or at school?

Practice the routine the way you expect it will be when school starts. For example, if you are going to expect your child to get dressed before breakfast, start reinforcing this expectation right now. With this expectation in place, the only change when school starts will be the earlier wake up time.

Summer Transitions

As summer closes and the school year appears on the horizon, we all start to feel the pressure to be ready for our lives to change. Perhaps, one of the biggest adjustments that we all make when school starts, is one of routines. We know that with school starting, families are going to wake up earlier and come home more tired. To make this transition easier, think about starting some routines today.

Outdoor Classroom As parents, many of us encourage our children to spend time outside. We know when our kids spend time outside, it improves their creativity, curiosity and attitude. This does not change when the school year starts. In an effort to support teachers as they provide engaging learning experiences for students, the Parent Teacher Advisory Committee (PTAC) at Mississippi Heights Elementary constructed an outdoor classroom.

As you drive by, you will see the green and gold sails on the front lawn of our school. These sails not only show our Storm pride, but also provide shade on a concrete patio, which allows for students to have a space to go for outdoor learning and activities.

This idea was presented to the PTAC by two classroom teachers as a part of the Big Idea Project. The Big Idea Project was initiated by the PTAC as they looked for new ideas from teachers and students that would provide improvements beneficial to all in the school.

Mr. Aaron Jurek and Mr. Jesse Jarvi, both 4th grade teachers at the time, presented the idea of an outdoor classroom. They often take students outside for different lessons, and felt having a dedicated learning space outside would be good for the students.

Students are curious and inquisitive about the world around them. They enjoy learning in new places, which makes the outdoors a great learning space

Research and our own experiences show that spending time outside has a positive impact on student learning. option. An outdoor space offers students a different experience from the traditional classroom space.

Learning outdoors increases students’ engagement by encouraging physical participation and handson experiences. That kind of engagement increases and solidifies learning and is one reason Mississippi Heights is excited to offer an outdoor classroom.

Furthermore, outdoor learning can be a valuable teaching space, not only for science or nature classes, but also as an inspiration for students’ writing and illustrating skills. We find students truly enjoy reading outside on nice days during the spring and fall. The warmth of the sun and the calming sounds of nature present a quiet and relaxing space for reading, and the space can assist with learning new math concepts or providing teachers access to space when an activity requires more space than the traditional classroom provides. The outdoor classroom allows us to engage in expanded activities, and is great for extending any learning concept.

Research and our own experiences show that spending time outside has a positive impact on student learning.

It improves student engagement, solidifies learning concepts and improves overall positive learning behaviors. We are incredibly excited to offer this to students at Mississippi Heights Elementary.

Prepare Now for Student Technology Distribution Complete User Agreement, Review Protection Plan in Skyward Family Access Sauk Rapids-Rice Public Schools provides increased access to technology to reduce barriers and provide more equitable access and opportunities for all students within the district.

Before students in grades 4-12 will be issued their technology, parents need to sign a user agreement.

Parents/Guardians can complete this User Agreement in Skyward Family Access under Online Forms.

• Students in grades PreK-2 have access to shared technology within their classrooms • Students in grade 3 have access to personalized devices that remain in the classroom • Students in grades 4-8 are issued to iPads that they use both inside and outside of school • Students in grades 9-12 are issued MacBook Airs to use both inside and outside of school Additionally, a protection plan is available for purchase for $60 laptop or $30 iPad annually. This plan provides generous coverage for damages as detailed in the comparison charts at right. Families have found this plan to be a great option! After signing the agreement, parents/guardians can pay for the protection plan in Skyward under Fee Management.

Information on student device distribution times will be sent through building emails in August. We strongly encourage you to purchase the protection plan.

Food Service Program Information Personal Identification Numbers As in past years, the PIN allows each student access to their family lunch account. This PIN is unique to each individual student, and if students are careful not to share their PIN with others, it will protect the privacy of the family lunch account and the balance in it.

Assigning personal identification numbers helps keep lunch lines moving quickly, allowing students as much time as possible to enjoy their lunch.

Families of incoming kindergartners will receive a mailing in August with their student’s PIN. Returning students will continue to use the PIN they were assigned the previous school year. If your student has forgotten their PIN, you may access it online through Skyward Family Access. Simply login, click on “Food Service” on the left menu and you will see “Key Pad

Number” on the right side of the screen next to your students’ name. A listing of individual PIN numbers will be provided to homeroom teachers in case a student forgets his/her number.

We are encouraging all families to submit the Free and Reduced Lunch Application this year as your application can help the district receive important funding and discounts for school programs. If you know you don’t qualify and don't wish to share income information, please write “do not qualify” in the income area of the form.

Through Skyward Family Access, you can make a payment using your Discover, VISA or MasterCard credit or debit card, check your student’s account balance, or view your transaction history online.

A la Carte Items A la Carte items are available during lunch for students with a positive balance at the middle and high school.

Elementary students are allowed to purchase only extra entrees and milk.

You can choose to limit your child(ren) on any A la Carte or extra purchases by submitting the form on the website at www.isd47.org/departments/foodservice and returning the form to the Food Service Department.

Breakfast Program: Free for All PreK-12 Students The Sauk Rapids-Rice Public Schools will continue the Free Breakfast Program in all schools for the 2019-2020 school year.

In elementary buildings, breakfast will be offered at the beginning of each day, free of charge, to all students.

In the middle and high school buildings, free breakfast will be available in the cafeteria to all students.

Students may stop by during breakfast serving times.

Please encourage your child to participate in the free breakfast program this year.

Sauk Rapids-Rice Public Schools Ensures Students Receive Healthy and Nutritious Meals The goal of district Policy #534 is to provide nutritious meals to students and to promote healthy eating habits, while enhancing learning, maintaining the financial integrity of the the school nutrition program, and eliminating the stigmatization of children who are unable to pay meal charges.

It is the policy of Sauk Rapids-Rice Public Schools to offer breakfast and lunch meals that meet state and federal guidelines.

Families may apply for free and reduced priced meal benefits anytime during the school year. Meal applications are distributed to all families in the District prior to the student’s first day of classes.

Payments by cash or check can be made in each school building except at Hillside Early Childhood & Adult Basic Education Center. Payments can also be made in the Food Service Office, the District Office

or online through a student’s Skyward Family Access Account. The link can be found at www.isd47.org.

Applications are available at the Sauk Rapids-Rice District Office and Food Service Office between 7:30 a.m.- 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, and at www.isd47.org. Go to Departments and then Food Service.

Notification & Collection Families will be notified of their balance once the balance reaches $20.00. Families will be notified via phone call, text, email, and/or letters sent home.

The school district will make reasonable efforts to notify families when meal account balances are low or fall below zero.

Sauk Rapids-Rice Public Schools is #StormStrong at Community Parades Over 75 Sauk Rapids-Rice students, staff and friends of the school district joined together on June 21 to be a part of the Rapids River Days parade in Sauk Rapids. The group drew an enthusiastic response from spectators as they marched down the parade route that ran along Sixth Avenue starting near Pleasantview Elementary School and ended near the Sauk RapidsRice Middle School. The district group joined more than 80 units in the annual parade that is a popular Central Minnesota event.

Sauk Rapids-Rice High School Activities Director, NaDean Schroeder, coordinated the school district group. Thank you, to Brandl Moters, for letting the district use a vehicle for the parade.

Participants wore gold Storm T-shirts with the hashtag #StormStrong printed on the back, walked ahead of the donated vehicle and passed candy to parade-goers.

The district group was overwhelmed by the crowd’s positive response. Schroeder says,”Everyone seemed excited when we marched by. There were lots of shouts and claps.” She adds, “And

we had candy, so that always helps, but the highlight for our group was that many people called out to teachers and showed their support. The schools have an impact on people’s lives and our staff is valued by the community.”

She says the school group felt so proud of the district and enjoyed the warm reception. Communities and schools are intertwined and parades are a good opportunity for the schools to reach out and connect in an enjoyable way to supporters. Schroeder says, “Being able to show the district’s support of the communities—because the communities have shown the schools the same—made the event really worthwhile. Many of us who participated in the district group were amazed by the fun we had.”

There was only one downside, she says: “We should have brought more candy! We ran low about halfway through the parade route.”

The school group had so much fun at the Sauk Rapids parade that they are marching again in the 28th Annual Family Fun Day Parade in Rice.

Staff and friends of the schools will again represent the district in the August 17 parade that begins around 3:00 p.m. and runs from Rice City Hall to Fourth Street Northeast.

This time, the group will bring extra candy!

Our school provides healthy meals each day. Breakfast will be free for all students in Preschool through Grade 12 during the 2019-2020 school year. Lunch costs $2.65 for students in grades K-5, $2.90 for students in grades 6-12, $3.95 for Adults.

All families are asked to complete the enclosed Application for Educational Benefits. Your application helps the school qualify for education funds and discounts and provides important information about household family members. If you know you don’t qualify, simply write “Do Not Qualify” in the income area of the application. A new application must be submitted each year. Schlangen goes on to say, “Through the generous grant from SRREF, we were able to print multiple sets of the game, which features 100 unique cards. The artists and everyone around the school were so interested to see the finished cards, so we hosted many visitors in the media center the day that they arrived. This fall, we will be giving multiple sets of the game to our mythology teachers so they can use them in their classes next year. We are very proud to showcase many talented artists’ work through this game, and we are excited to watch the students play the game and discuss the characters featured within it next school year. Thank you, SRREF!”

The high school staff applied for a Sauk RapidsRice Education Foundation (SRREF) grant as a way to provide students the opportunity to learn by doing. Steph Schlangen, high school technology integration coach, explains, “We wanted to implement project-based learning by posing a problem for students to solve, and then helping them learn through the steps of solving that problem. We started out with two premises. It is difficult for mythology students to remember all of the characters in the Greek pantheon–the heroes and the monsters. Art students need an authentic audience for their work. The solution was to make a game to help reinforce what students were learning through their study of classical literature that featured the art of our students. We worked in collaboration with the English department, art teacher, Shelly Chambers, and her students, student designer, Madeline Ebnet and Rengel Printing in order for our game to be developed.”

New Interim Early Childhood Director for 2019-2020

Early Childhood Screening Needed for Children Ages 3 to 5 Years

Please welcome Karen Cash to her new role of interim early childhood director for the 2019-2020 school year. Karen will be managing the daily tasks of this position at Hillside with support from other district administrators. Megan Rogholt has been serving as director for the last three years, and is now taking a sabbatical next year to complete her doctoral dissertation in Early Childhood Systems Alignment.

Preparation for Future Success at Sauk Rapids-Rice High School As we embark on a new school year, there is time to reflect and recommit to the Sauk Rapids-Rice District mission of providing a world-class education in a collaborative environment that inspires every learner to think, achieve and care. At Sauk Rapids-Rice High School (SRRHS), this is a call to action to engage students in the best academic preparation so they may pursue dreams and careers they choose with great confidence and ability. We recognize that preparation for our students means not only meeting the goal of graduation, but a focus on what happens once students earn their diploma.

We prioritize providing many opportunities for students to explore, prepare and experience potential career options for their future. Students have an opportunity, two days a week, to work with staff in our guided Connections advisory period meant to provide interventions and extensions to support students in their work academically, socially and emotionally at the SRRHS. Time is devoted to exploring and planning for any opportunities students hope to take advantage of during their high school career both inside and outside of the classroom.

During Connections, SRRHS students have the chance to use the Minnesota Career Information System (MCIS) as part of advisory work in grades 9

through 12. MCIS is an online portal which provides resources about career, educational and labor market information, as well as surveys and exercises which help guide students in identifying passions and skills.

Students use this pertinent information as they make decisions about class registration, involvement in clubs and organizations, and researching careers that they may want to learn more about. There are several Minnesota Career Fields, Clusters and Pathways highlighted in MCIS including: Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources; Hospitality and Tourism; Architecture and Construction; Human Services; Arts, Audio/Video Technology and Communications; Information Technology; Business, Management and Administration; Law, Public Safety, Corrections and Security; Education and Training; Manufacturing; Finance; Marketing; Government and Public Administration; Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics; Health Science; and Transportation, Distribution and Logistics.

A focus on the building of foundation knowledge and skills in the areas of academic and technical literacy permeates the curriculum of the high school and also helps drive the experiences we hope students have in our environment. We have been fortunate to take advantage of opportunities which allow students to

develop post-secondary plans while opening as many doors as possible to future endeavors. An example is the Exploring Potential Interests and Careers (EPIC) event held in St. Cloud. This event is a large-scale career exploration event in Central Minnesota hosted by area businesses and higher education institutions.

Students can explore hundreds of jobs with a focus on true hands-on experiences.

We recognize that planning for the future can be stressful for all students, and that each individual has their own path. SRRHS staff have a consistent goal of providing choice, as much information as possible and support throughout the journey of post-secondary planning. We are proud at SRRHS to provide options for our students to take the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB), Accuplacer or ACT. These choices give each student the chance to take a step in preparation in a way that most closely meets the needs of their post-secondary plan. As a school, we also look to put as much information as possible in front of our students as they look to make decisions about their future. Examples of this include annual career panels and the annual military and college fair, which is a highlight of winter conferences. To provide support, students connect with staff in classrooms, with counselors and administrators to talk about plans and needs from the student perspective.

Supporting learning both inside and outside of the classroom is a continuous process as we prepare students for their path into the ever-changing adult world. We are grateful for the community and business partnerships that have been created which support learning in a way that opens the eyes of our students to the incredible career options available. At Sauk Rapids-Rice High School we are proud of these foundational opportunities that continue to support the mission of preparing students academically and socially to meet their planned post-secondary goals.
