Hua named class of 2018 valedictorian BY ANNA SALDANA STAFF WRITER

SAUK RAPIDS – Over the course of Jonathan Hua’s 17 years, his parents have been his largest inspiration. “My parents have really kept me motivated, just with their life stories,” Hua said. “They emigrated from Vietnam, and some of the stories they tell are nothing short of incredible.” Hua, son of Vu Hua and Van Kieu Le, has used his parents’ stories of strength and perseverance as the impetus to earn a 4.29 grade point average and push his way to the top of his class. Hua has been named valedictorian of the Sauk Rapids-Rice Class of 2018 and will leave his peers with a final message at commencement May 29 at St. Cloud State University’s Halenbeck Hall in St. Cloud. “When I came to the high school as a freshman, my goal was to make it to the top 10 in my class,” Hua said. “At the end of freshman year, I was ranked third, so I changed my goal to be valedictorian. It feels great to accomplish that.” Hua enrolled in advance placement classes and dedicated himself to his studies in order to achieve his success. “I had to stay focused

and disciplined through everything,” Hua said. One of Hua’s most difficult but rewarding classes was calculus. “There are a lot of different concepts in calculus, and it took a lot of effort to fully understand all of them,” Hua said. “But once I was able to understand everything, it became one of my most rewarding classes of my high school career. It’s funny how it all worked out, but it ended up being one of my favorite classes.” Hua’s favorite study spot is his bed. He finds the location allows him to remain relaxed yet focused at the same time. “I have gotten a lot of work done there, but I’ve been asked, ‘Don’t you just feel like taking a nap instead?’” Hua said. “Sometimes, yes, but I feel most focused if I can be relaxed and comfortable.” When Hua is not studying, he enjoys playing video games and researching. “I like to make myself think, even if I’m not studying,” Hua said. “Usually I’m looking into how things work or why things work the way they do.” He also spends time with members of the Minnesota Honor Society and math league, the last of which he was

a captain this year. “Math league seemed like the natural thing to join,” Hua said. “Math has been one of my favorite subjects throughout my high school career and math league has been an extension of that.” Hua was a member of the Storm football team and said this year was the greatest year he has had with the team. “Not only did we have an outstanding season, but the team felt more cohesive, more of a team than we did in the past,” Hua said. “We all wanted to work hard for the win, and we all gained some great friendships out of it. The homecoming game was our greatest achievement as a team – to show that our hard work was paying off. It meant a lot to all of us, especially us

seniors, to win in front of our large hometown crowd.” Hua was involved in track and field last year, but has taken this spring to remain focused on his future. Hua will be attending the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities this fall with plans to study physics or mathematics. “Both of these are passions of mine,” Hua said of his possible majors. “Either or both would be great to pursue and both would help me get into the technology field of work, which is something I’ve been wanting to get into for quite some time.” For now, Hua is preparing for graduation and the address to his fellow classmates as valedictorian. “It’s really an honor,” Hua said. “I’m one of many in a competitive, hard-working class, so it’s an honor to be the valedictorian.”

Her biggest accomplishment Leen named class of 2018 salutatorian BY ANNA SALDANA STAFF WRITER

SAUK RAPIDS – Rachel Leen is accomplished in many ways. She is a tennis captain, the student council president and the Sauk Rapids-Rice class secretary. Recently, she added one more accomplishment to her list: salutatorian of the class of 2018. “It’s a huge honor, not something I expected,” said Leen, 18. “In the back of my mind, I always thought it would be cool to achieve it, but it was kind of a far-reaching goal.” Leen, daughter of Cindy and Donald Leen, has a 4.25 grade point average. She said she has put in long hours to get to where she is today. “There were a lot of late nights, studying in my bedroom or at my family’s cabin, a lot of hard work and a lot of AP [advanced placement] classes,” Leen said. “And I had to learn how to take tests well, as I wasn’t a very good testtaker before. But in the end, it has paid off tremendously.” Her toughest class was calculus. “I really struggled in that class,” Leen said. … “I had a hard time grasping the concepts. That class showed me what hard work is really like.” In all the hard work, Leen has continued to stay involved in many school activities – student council, tennis, Minnesota Honor Society, Project 4 Teens, prom committee and principal’s cabinet. “I’ve had a lot of great experiences because of the activities I’ve participated in,” Leen said. “Student council

has really been a great group to be a part of.” One event that sticks out in particular is the survivor week she helped plan this spring. “I would say survivor week is my greatest activity accomplishment throughout my high school career,” Leen said. “I was really in charge with helping plan the week and working at each of the challenges. It was a lot of fun, and I am really happy with how the week turned out. It was a huge success and we raised a lot of money.” Student council provided Leen with strong relationships as well. “Trisha Bemboom, my student council advisor, is now like a friend and a mentor to me,” Leen said. “We’ve gone on all three student council trips together. … She has helped me

gain a lot of leadership skills and confidence. It will really help me going forward.” Leen also enjoyed homecoming week as a senior. “There were more students dressed up than any other year I can remember,” Leen said. “The school spirit was incredible. Then, our student body showed up in large numbers to the homecoming game, where we won for the

first time in seven years. It was truly a reflection of the ‘change the culture’ movement the senior class has been working to start.” When Leen is not working on homework or participating in one of her school activities, she enjoys reading and being outdoors. “I love being outside all year long,” Leen said. “I’ll hike, be on the lake, go skiing or snowshoeing, or play tennis. I also love to travel and see the world’s beauty and creations.” Leen will be attending the College of Saint Benedict this fall, but she is undecided in her major. “I have a couple different considerations right now,” Leen said. “I’m thinking English, Spanish, pre-med or pre-dentistry. I’ve always loved English, and it’s been one of my favorite classes. Spanish is just a great thing to learn, and it will help me no matter what field I go into. And pre-med or pre-dentistry will allow me to help people, which is something I really enjoy.” Regardless of which path she takes, Leen knows she wants to be successful and put in the hard work to get there. She has Sauk Rapids-Rice High School to thank for the start of her success. “The staff and my classmates here have been great,” Leen said. “The support in this building is like no other. It’s with their help that I’ve been as successful as I have been and it’s helped me earn the title of salutatorian.”

Cooking their way to nationals

SRRHS competing in culinary, management BY ANNA SALDANA STAFF WRITER

SAUK RAPIDS — Cooking exquisite dishes can be fun and challenging, but when you have an hour to cook three dishes – an appetizer, an entrée and a dessert – with only two butane burners and no electrical appliances in front of judges, it gets interesting. For a group of Àve Sauk RapidsRice High School culinary students – De Andre Jackson, Cole Orton, Madelyn Adamski, Bailey Florek and Elisa-Marie Hartung – it will be the reality April 27-29. “It’s exciting, but stressful,” said advisor Mary Levinski. “At least they do all the work, and I get to coach them along the way to give them the best dishes possible. But there’s a big-time commitment in order to get to the level they are at.” PHOTO BY ANNA SALDANA This year marks the 12th Cole Orton (from left) De Andre Jackson, Bailey Florek and Madelyn Adamski stand with their completed dishes consecutive year the management April 9 at team practice. SAUK RAPIDS — Three Sauk Rapids-Rice students were injured April 16 when a second-grade student brought a knife to Pleasantview Elementary School and began striking students in the early morning hour. According to the Sauk Rapids Police Department and district, an 8-year-old male student arrived at school and used a kitchen knife — used for preparing meals — to cut the 8-, 9- and 13-year-old victims in the head. The incident occurred during a Àve-minute window at approximately 7:15 a.m. Bruce Watkins, interim superintendent of Independent School District No. 47, said class times begin at 7:40 a.m. and students were just beginning to arrive
