island school
Since its founding in 1977, Island School has steadily and humbly grown in size and reputation. In the fall of 1977, there were a total of thirty-eight students attending Island School. Today, in 2022, Island School hosts 492 students from Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 12. We are ecstatic to announce the construction of our new academic building, the David W. Pratt Hall. This building will include 6 classrooms and a maker space, which will provide much needed breathing room on campus, as well as opportunities to provide engineering courses and technology curriculum.
Island School is the only accredited independent nonprofit college preparatory school for grades Pre-Kindergarten - 12 on the island of Kauaʻi. Our school continues to provide a challenging curriculum that integrates deeper-learning and social-emotionallearning with traditional practices and Hawaiian values. Island School students are equipped to be independent thinkers, confident learners, curious and creative explorers and are ready to make a positive impact on their environment.
Island School is a member of the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS), and is accredited by the Hawaii Association of Independent Schools (HAIS), the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), and the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC).

Dear Island School Community,
Vincent W. Durnan Interim Head of School, Island School
Here’s the report for a year that featured a return (mostly) from COVID-19. You’ll see a resumption in our capacity to gather and to take on projects that will help define our school’s future. Thank you for all you’re doing to help us turn high aspirations into a range of recent accomplishments.
You’ll see that progress in our growing enrollment, in the all-time best results of our athletic teams, in the stories of our most recent graduates’ plans for continued education, in the foundation built for a new classroom building, and in our deepened connections to families from all backgrounds on this remarkable island. The return of our annual auction stands as another special success for the year just completed. The record-level proceeds from that event will strengthen every dimension of life at Island School, and our special gratitude extends to all involved. Pair that with a growing Voyager Fund and the beginnings of a permanent endowment to see for the needs of Island School in perpetuity, and you’ll begin to see into our next generation.
It’s my honor to serve as Interim Head for this transition year, to bring a fresh set of eyes to witness up close what you may have been watching for decades. Or maybe you’re part of the new cohort of people who are just starting to call Island School home. Whichev er the case, the achievements documented in the pages of this report are no less impressive. People here have historically watched

every dollar, found ways to make do with less, and pitched in where there was a need. That’s our culture, and it’s strong. Now to see what’s next.
Don’t think for a minute that what you have to add won’t matter. I can say already that people stepping up to help has been the answer at every crucial moment on the school’s path to this point. The last couple of years have reminded us how important it is to be in school, to be there for students and teachers alike, and to find common purpose in setting goals side by side. Consider the stories produced during the challenges of pandemic times, celebrate the commitments that made our successes possible, and look for the right ways to be involved as we all move forward together.
Highlights from 2021-2022 include:
• Three individual KIF titles, and eight team titles won, including boys cross country, boys varsity volleyball, individual and mixed paddling, golf, and boys soccer.
• SAT Averages: 1223
• SAT Reading: 616
• SAT Math: 607
• In total, the senior class of 2021-2022 were offered over $1,000,000 in scholarships and grant money per year from all of their schools of acceptance, including 4 nearly full ride offers and awards.
• Presented senior capstone projects in person, welcoming family and friends to campus.
• Held our first in-person May Day performance in two years, adn hosted a full house.
• Celebrated seventeen Island School elementary school artists whose works were selected to be featured in the Young Artists of Hawaiʻi Exhibit.
• Successfully hosted our highest grossing auction in Island School history, raising over $5,000,000 for tuition aid.
• Began construction of our new classroom building, the David W. Pratt Hall.
With sincere thanks, Vincent W. Durnan, Katherine G. Richardson, Interim Head of School President, Island School Board of Directors

Educating the Mind
The 2021-2022 school year marked the sixth year that Island School has offered Advanced Placement (AP) courses to our high school students. AP courses offer high school students a college preparatory curriculum and the opportunity to earn college credit. By passing a national AP exam at the end of the school year, high school students can earn college credit in that subject before they even step foot on a college campus. A year long AP class in high school is comparable to one semester of an introductory level college class. This gives students the opportunity to explore subjects that interest them in college without having to worry about rushing through general education credits.
Island School began by offering only AP Calculus
and AP English in 2014, and has grown to include six courses in the 2021-22 school year; Calculus, Computer Science, English, Psychology, Statistics, and US History, with an addition of AP Chemistry in the 2023-24 school year. Island School’s Academic Director, Dr. Jeff Kozak, explains that Island School introduced the AP curriculum in 2014 based on feedback from Island School alumni and students who “wanted more challenging courses, and wanted to earn college credit while still in high school. Some alumni felt that they were not as prepared as their college peers who took AP courses in high school. Some Island School students also felt that having the AP courses would help with college admissions.”

AP Scores 2022
Above are the Island School AP scores and passing rates from spring of 2022 compared to state and national averages. As the AP program has grown, we are achieving exam scores and passing averages well above national averages in most courses.
Certain AP courses at Island School are selective based on prerequisites, such as math classes or World Language. Other AP courses, however, are open to any student who would like an additional challenge at Island School. Our AP English course is open to any and all high school juniors and seniors who are willing to challenge themselves in literature. In the 2021-2022 school year, twenty-three 11th and 12th grade students took AP English with David Reynolds at Island School. “It is a true joy to see so many of our young scholars attempt and succeed in this nationally recognized program” says Reynolds. “Almost every year, nearly half of the Island School juniors and seniors earn college credit, as well as a deep appreciation for literature. I love when graduates return not only claiming success and confidence in their college courses and writing, but also to share the latest book they read or the latest poem they wrote.” The benefits of AP classes are far reaching. Our College Counselor, Renate McMullen, has said that AP classes help to prepare Island School students for college in many ways, “rigor is certainly something that colleges consider, whether it be honors, AP or other challenging courses. AP courses also help to prepare students to handle college level courses and workload.” Island School alumni, Allison Summerhays (2017), felt that “the AP courses I took
in high school were instrumental to my college preparation and helped me feel confident in my transition from high school to college. When I started my first semester of college, I felt like I was used to the amount of course work and the level of material typical of a college course, because of what I had experienced with AP courses. I also knew how to study effectively and to do independent work outside of class because of my experience preparing for AP tests in high school.”
We are proud of every student that leaves Island School to lead a life of significance, and are honored to be a part of that preparation.

Social Emotional Learning in Elementary, Middle & High School

Inspiring the Heart
Social Emotional Learning (SEL) is described as the process of developing social and emotional competencies –the knowledge, skills, attitude, and behaviors that individuals need to make successful choices. In order to fulfill our mission of educating the mind, inspiring the heart and preparing Kauaʻi’s youth to lead lives of significance, Island School students must be able to make successful choices and understand their roles within their community. Island School takes a whole school approach to SEL that involves administration, teachers, staff, parents and students. Since incorporating SEL into everyday life, teachers and staff have noticed a positive impact on not only students’ relationships, but also their academic success.
Island School’s elementary division has implemented SEL into their every day schedules in many ways, including morning meetings. Morning meetings are done as a way to practice empathy and understanding between classmates. Every morning, each grade participates in a greeting and an activity. During the greeting, each student introduces themself and shares one thing that is important to them that day - this could be one thing they are looking forward to or a goal they have for themselves. The class greeting is followed by an activity that allows students to have fun and spend time with the classmates outside of their usual friend groups. By facilitating interactions between students who might not otherwise get to know each other, Elementary School Division Director Cristy Peeren has noticed these meetings have resulted in behavior improvements and has helped to circumvent misunderstandings between classmates. Elementary school students are able to more fully understand their classmates, see issues or disagreements from other points of view, and communicate more effectively thanks to the SEL work they do each morning.
Middle school continues to incorporate SEL into
everyday life through the advisory program, which has been implemented for the past four years. An advisory group is made up of ten students and one advisor – a staff or faculty member on campus, and meets twice a week in order for students to bond, connect with peers they might not otherwise connect with, and communicate their feelings with one another.
Two special parts of the middle school advisory program are the integration of Hawaiian values and the Character Nomination Program. Each quarter, different Hawaiian values are integrated into advisory lessons, beginning with respect & reliability, responsibility, responsiveness, and concluding with reflectiveness & resilience. At the end of each quarter, students discuss and create character award criteria based on that quarter’s Hawaiian values and nominate their peers to be recognized for exhibiting these characteristics. Students are responsible for nominating their peers based on the strengths and actions of their peers observed throughout daily life at Island School.
Several students from each grade are nominated, and a written log of their recognition is sent in an email to the students’ parents and teachers. The Character Nomination Program works to intrinsically motivate students in sixth, seventh, and eighth grades, and allows them to understand how their actions have the power to impact, positively or negatively, their peers.
Advisories continue throughout high school, and are led through Project Wayfinder. Project Wayfinder was born at the Stanford Institute of Design after asking the question, “how can we reimagine adolescent education to develop a student’s sense of meaning, purpose, and belonging?” Project Wayfinder offers activities and exercises to help students cultivate their sense of belonging and purpose within their community.
Voyager, 12
The high school advisory program was created in 2018, after a particularly enlightening all-faculty meeting in which each high school student’s name was put up onto a white board, and each teacher put a checkmark near the students they felt they had connections with. Some students, High School Division Director Nathaniel Evslin recalls, had many check marks while others had very little. The advisory programs were born, in part, as a way to ensure that every student feels connected with, heard and cared for by at least one adult on campus.
Many studies show that if students feel a sense of belonging at school, if they feel welcome and respected at school, they will do better academically. If a student feels connected to their peers and to the adults on campus, they want to succeed in school, do a good job in their classes, and make their teachers proud.
Our teachers have put the time and energy necessary for our SEL curriculum to succeed throughout all divisions. Teachers are able to use everyday moments in the classroom to reinforce SEL strategies, and are invested in the process as much as the results. Stephanie Achuara, Middle School
Division Director and former math teacher, has said that SEL can be learned and taught, just like math can be learned and taught, but that it cannot be taught in a silo. Our teachers and students have put the time and energy into the SEL curriculum in order to reap the benefits. The lessons that all of our students are learning through their SEL curriculum will help them succeed in living lives of significance as they grow within and beyond Island School.

Preparing Kauaʻi’s Youth to Lead Lives of Significance
The 2021-2022 school year was an explosive one for Island School Athletics, winning eight Kauaʻi Interscholastic Federation (KIF) team titles and three individual titles. Records were broken and history was made throughout every season of athletics, in boys cross country, boys varsity volleyball, both individual and mixed paddling teams, golf and boys soccer all winning KIF Championships.
Sean Magoun, Director of Institutional Advancement, boys soccer coach and KIF Coach of the Year in the ‘21-’22 school year, attributed at least some of the success of this season to the bond that was created amongst Island School athletes during the previous year. KIF put a temporary pause on high school athletics in 2020 due to growing concern about the Coronavirus spread across Kauaʻi. While matches and games across schools were canceled, Island School athletes continued to hold practices and scrimmages amongst themselves. Even while the island was temporarily shut down, these young athletes envisioned a strong comeback, and made it their goal to see that comeback become a reality.
During this period of isolated practices and scrimmages, spending all of their time working together towards a common goal, Island School athletes created deep bonds and relationships with their teammates. It was this bond that, when mixed with their determination, carried so many teams to victory. These young athletes had grit and concentration, but also possessed an ability to see the success of the athletic program, even if they weren’t quite there yet. They had bought into the long term goal of the program, and were committed to making it work, even if they weren’t sure what “it” was yet. For Island School’s boys soccer team, “it” turned out to be placing fourth in the state, and making school
history as KIF Champions.
Captains of the boys soccer team were chosen on a weekly basis by Coach Sean, giving each player a chance to prove their dedication to the team and show their leadership skills. The boys who were awarded the title of captain were showing that they were committed to their teammates and coaches, and truly believed in the success of the program. When one athlete showed that belief, the whole team began to show it as well. The team believed they could make it to the KIF Championships and they went further than that by making Island School history, winning KIF and securing fourth place in the state, losing their last game by one point in double overtime.
This road to this success didn’t happen overnight, or even in the two years since the KIF paused competitions. This road has been paved over the course of twenty years, being built and rebuilt since the year 2000. The first year that Island School grew from a K-8 school to a K-12 school, high school sports were introduced into the mix. With different sports being offered, one has remained steady for the past twenty-two years. At Island School, there have been many different types of teams, says Sean Magoun, who has coached the team since its inception. There have been teams that knew how to compete hard, but did not yet know how to win, and teams that have been committed to the immediate goal but not the long term goal of the athletic program at Island School. Last year, however, there was a turn of the tide noticed by Coach Sean, assistant coach Mark Ure and Jerry Jona, Island School’s Athletic Director.
More noticeably in the 2021-22 school year than most years before, students and student athletes were proud to be Island School kids. They were proud to put on their
ischool.org, 15
blue and white jerseys and proud to compete under the title of “Voyager.” Our students have bought into the ethos of being a student first, an athlete second, and putting the same effort into school as they did into sports. When students were able to see the whole picture and the worthiness of working towards a goal that had never been achieved in Island School history, they were able to reach it. This belief is built on teamwork and determination, and is coupled with an element of grit that is inspired by Jerry Jona, who pushes Island School athletes to both work hard on the field and be proud of that work off the field.
This belief and grit, teamwork and individual effort all culminated in a record breaking year. We are so proud of our Voyager athletes and can’t wait to see how the program continues to grow and inspire a new generation of Voyagers.

Fire & Ice FEEL THE POWER
On April 2 2022, over 500 community members gathered for the 43rd Annual Gala Auction. Attendees gathered to celebrate Island School and enjoy one of the first in-person events on Kauai since the COVID-19 pandemic began. The theme of this year’s auction was Fire & Ice, to represent the ways in which differences can come together to create beauty, just like they do at Island School. Island School has teachers, students and staff members from all walks of life with different backgrounds.
This was the largest grossing auction in Island School’s 45 year history, making over $500,000 for tuition aid. All funds raised at the auction go towards financial aid, and ensures that an Island School education is accessable by all children across the island. It is through the generousity of our sponsors, donors and attendees that this record-breaking amount was raised.
We wish to extend our deepest thanks to everyone who made this event possible. Our Auction committee worked tirelessly to ensure that this event was as successful as it could possible be, which they succeeded beyond anyone’s expectation. Mahalo!
