MOVING FORWARD, TOGETHER From my first days at Island School, I have felt welcomed and valued for who I am and what I can bring to this community. My parents, who immigrated from the Philippines and had to build their own lives in the United States brickby-brick, modeled for me that it is through hard work, love of family, care for our environment around us, and dedicated study that my siblings and I could build our own lives as we dreamed. It is this foundation that I bring with me to all that I do and that I have found here at Island School as well.

I have felt the power of community among our students, teachers, families, administrators, and donors. Community is more than just a word at Island School; it is a daily lived experience. Every day we work to create camaraderie with students, families, alumni, faculty, and staff, to make real a place where community members experience a sense of belonging, a feeling of acceptance, a chance to grow roots and make connections. You are part of this community!

This act of building community was made abundantly clear to me in my second month as Head of School at the Fall Festival. Led by our inspiring Parent Association, so many took action to volunteer their time and creativity for this event to kick off our school year. This sense of community coming together is clear time and time again at Island School, from donations made to Maui after the devastating firestorm in August, to planning an outdoor movie night that doubles as a canned food drive for our local Food Bank.

REFLECTING ON OUR ACHIEVEMENTS

ATHLETIC SUCCESS Throughout the 2022-2023 school year, our Voyager athletes showed up time and time again to represent Island School on the field, on the court, and in the water. Throughout all seasons, Island School won eight Kauaʻi Interscholastic Federation (KIF) team titles, including girls swimming, boys soccer,

girls paddling, boys tennis, boys golf, girls track, and overall track. Island School also secured three individual state champions, Chloe Inouye ‘24 for the 100M breaststroke, Lucas Summerhays ‘25 in golf, and Michael Fitzgerald ‘24 in tennis, 17 event champions, and 38 KIF All-Stars.

CLASS OF 2023 The class of 2023 received 127 acceptance letters to 77 different schools across the country, including Columbia University, ATP Flight School, George Fox University, University of Colorado at Boulder, and

Savannah College of Art and Design.

This class is interested in a variety of majors, ranging from Nursing, Biology, and Mechanical Engineering to Film, Graphic Design, and Architecture.

MAY ‘23 Senior Projects The Class of 2023 presented their Senior Capstone theses and projects to their peers and guests.

Science Olympiad Our middle school team placed third overall at the state competition.

LOOKING TO THE FUTURE

NEW YEAR, NEW TRADITIONS This year began with a new tradition at Island School, an Opening All-School Assembly attended by students from Nā Pua Keiki through 12th Grade, staff, faculty, and the Board of Directors. Gathered in the Wilcox Gym to ceremoniously usher in the start of the ’23’24 school year, attendees experienced and participated in a fun and beautiful expression of where Island School is today and what the future holds.

Foundational values of passing knowledge from our older students to our younger ones, and of our younger students inspiring our older students with curiosity and hope, was demonstrated through the passing of water between representative members of each grade level. The audience was treated to middle and high school speakers and singers, and important faculty and staff career milestones were celebrated – most notably Shantelle Shimogawa and Cristy Peeren who have been teaching at Island School for 25 and 45 years, respectively. our incredible school community as we stand together was especially palpable as the Nā Pua Keiki and their high school “big buddies,” joined hands to lead the school in an Oli Mahalo, followed by our beloved alma mater. MAKING HISTORY:

Let’s name Island School’s Man of the Year: David W. Pratt.

In fact, it’s hard to imagine anyone who has done more to ensure the presence of our school.

David was instrumental in securing the funds, obtaining the permits, designing the initial ten-acre campus, and managing the construction of the school. His boardroom at Grove Farm served as Island School’s boardroom during the construction of the school in 1990-91, and after Hurricane Iniki in 1992.

Recruited to the Board of Directors in 1987, when Island School was housed in a converted plantation building in Kealia, David always had his eye on the future and the best interests of Kauaʻi at heart. His sons were already attending Hawaii Preparatory Academy on the Big Island, but he felt strongly that, in the future, families should have an on-island option for an independent, college-preparatory education.

In 1996 David agreed to be Board President and served in that capacity for 12 years before stepping down to serve as both Vice President and Chair of the Development Committee. Due to his efforts, the school was able to purchase more land and plan additional facilities. In the early 2000s the Frear Center and the Wilcox Gym were constructed, anchoring the school’s commitment to Hawaiian Studies and athletics.

DAVID W. PRATT HALL the academic program and campus life, David’s focus for over three decades has been on the infrastructure, and he has done the heavy lifting in raising funds for capital projects and building out the campus.

this new addition to campus. The David W. Pratt Hall, which provides six new classrooms that can hold up to 150 students, has enabled Island School to increase its capacity to now serve 500 students.

Always mindful of the future, David initiated an effort to collect important documents and house them in fireproof file cabinets. He and Founders Peggy Ellenburg and Lindsay Kamm met weekly during the summer of 2010 to dig through dusty old boxes that had been stashed and forgotten to create a set of archives.

David’s legacy includes other institutions and enterprises on Kauaʻi, and his initial involvement with Island School was as a community-minded leader. But his commitment has become personal over the years, and the family legacy now includes his son Sam Pratt, who serves as the Board Treasurer, and his grandsons, James ‘20 and Bradley ‘23, both Island School alumni.

There is no way to measure the phenomenal contributions that David has made and the opportunities that he has created for generations of Kauaʻi youth to come.

When Island School was approaching its 40th anniversary, David felt it was important to create a written history, so he offered to fund Island School: The Voyage and worked diligently with co-authors Lindsay Kamm and Jan TenBruggencate to write the book.

Several years ago, the Board determined that a high school classroom building was the next priority for the campus. Delayed by the pandemic and other factors, it has been a long haul to see this project through. David generously contributed his own resources, as well as helped to secure the $5.8 million needed to complete

The Island School community, along with the larger Kauaʻi community including Mayor Derek Kawakami, came together to honor David Pratt, a well-deserved tribute long in the making.

A gift-in-kind, or Kokua, is a great way to make a non-cash gift to Island School. These types of gifts include donations to the annual auction, or services that benefit the school’s programs and facilities. These gifts can free up critical operating funds for day-to-day operations.

Another way to get involved is through the Booster Club. Island School’s Booster Club supports our Athletic Department by raising funds for athletic travel and sports equipment.

44TH ANNUAL

The first Island School auction was held at the Coco Palms Queen’s Audience Hall on February 23, 1980. The auction has grown into a signature annual event for the whole Kauaʻi community, and attracted nearly 500 enthusiastic attendees in 2023. The auction proceeds make a significant contribution to Island School’s financial aid program and the dynamic programming offered to all students.
