Aloha from Nancy

What a year we have had together! I couldn’t imagine how welcomed I would feel as Head of School, and I am so grateful for the Island School ‘Ohana that embraced me so warmly in my first year.

Change and transition is never easy, and taking the time to pause and reflect on the wonderful traditions and new experiences we had together this year is a great way to appreciate the feel-good moments and reflect meaningfully on the challenges so we can continue to grow together. I have observed such heart and dedication in the teachers, staff, administrators, students, parents, board of directors, and all of the Island School ‘ohana, which inspires all that I do.

We have worked hard to build community together this year in order to have a greater shared understanding of what it means to be an Island School Voyager – whether it was through our Walking Wednesdays across campus for Nā Pua Keiki, singing together in our daily Morning Circle gatherings with Elementary School, impactful Ho’okupu days on and off campus with the Middle School, or leading all-school Pep Rallies and pushing through final exams by the High School.

As we close out the 23-24 academic year as stewards of this community, we have so much to appreciate. I hope each student has gained a deeper engagement with one or more of your passions…or even learned more clearly what you’re not passionate about…and that families have seen their children grow and shine in both expected and unexpected ways.

I am struck each day by what a unique and special place Island School is. We have work to do, as any good community does, and I know more than ever that we are up to doing that hard work together in order to continue to grow our school and each of us into all that we are meant to be.

And of course, as we send off the Class of 2024 on their own voyages away from us, we wish them all the best in what lies ahead.

Together,

One Year in Pratt Hall

This year, our students and teachers were the first to hold classes in David W. Pratt Hall, our latest addition to the Island School campus. Teachers and students could now have designated teaching and learning spaces for specific subjects, consistent across the school day, instead of teachers needing to transition spaces frequently throughout their day. The additional classrooms have allowed them to celebrate student learning in their teaching spaces as well as providing them and their students with more consistent structure and predictability.

Every day, students come to Pratt Hall for various classes across departments, including

English, World History, Geometry, Calculus, and ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi. Guest speakers visit Pratt Hall, including authors Gina Apostol and Elizabeth Rosner who spoke with High School English classes. The collapsing wall between classrooms allow for a double-sized room that enables class gatherings for 40-60 students, as well as admissions, robotics, and other community events.

Pratt Hall is enjoyed by teachers and board members as well, through weekly staff meetings and regular board meetings. This new addition has changed the way Island School is experienced by everyone on our own team as well as outside collaborators.

IN LOVING MEMORY OF DAVID PRATT

Earlier this summer, we grieved the loss of treasured board member and community leader, David W. Pratt. Mr. Pratt joined the Island School board in 1987, and believed strongly that families should have an option on Kauaʻi for an independent, college-preparatory education. David was elected Board President in 1996 and served in that capacity for 12 years.

Due to Mr. Pratt’s efforts, Island School has been able to grow into the institution it is today. Mr. Pratt was instrumental in the move of Island School from Kealia to Puhi in 1990 as well as in securing funds for additional facilities in the early 2000s, which led to the building of the Wilcox Gym and Frear Center for Hawaiian Culture. Most recently, Mr. Pratt contributed his own resources as well as helped lead the charge to secure almost $6 million needed to complete the David W. Pratt Hall.

Mr. Pratt was the grandfather of two Island School graduates, James ’20 and Bradley ’23, and father to Board Member, Sam Pratt. He was known on campus and across the island for his kindness, generousity, and ever-present humor.

Leading lives of significance, at Island School and beyond

This year marked Nathaniel Evslin’s last year at Island School as he embarks on his next professional adventure. Coaches of the Year

Mark Ure and Sean Magoun, both awarded Coach of the Year this year, have been playing soccer for most of their lives. Magoun started playing soccer growing up on Kauaʻi and was one of the first students to join the American Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO) on Kauaʻi in the 70’s. He went on to play soccer in college and began coaching Island School’s soccer team in 2000.

Ure, originally from Scotland, moved to Kauaʻi seven years ago and started Braveheart FC, a club team, with Island School parent, Matt Hall. He met Magoun in 2020 and began coaching at Island School shortly after. Since then, the Island School boys soccer team has won three Kauaʻi Interscholastic Federation (KIF) titles. This year, for the first time in Island School history, the boys soccer team won the Hawaii High School Athletic Association Division II State Championships.

When asked about their success as cocoaches, Ure and Magoun described their complementary coaching techniques and philosophies. Magoun’s favorite part about coaching with Ure is that, “he sees one thing in a player and I see another. So the real argument comes down to where to play them because [Ure] sees something different.” When it comes down to relocating a player, both coaches work together to ensure their players understand the broader aspects of the game.

At the State Championship semifinals game this year, both coaches worked together to manage unexpected situations and changes in positions. After the semifinal game, which they had won and advanced to the finals, Titus Schweitzer ’24, experienced full body

cramps for nearly an hour. While Ure was on another field observing and taking notes on the Kamehameha game, who Island School would be playing the next day, Magoun was caring for their injured player. That evening, both coaches worked together to strategize a plan for their final game if Schweitzer was unable to play the next day. Schweitzer played and assisted Sawyer Rogoff ’24 in the gamewinning goal against Kamehameha.

This confidence that these Island School soccer players have, in themselves and their abilities, has been instilled in them by Ure and Magoun. Their confidence came with maturity and focus that surprised even their coaches at times. The boys on this team put in a lot of work outside of school, training during summers and playing on club teams in the off-season. “They knew within themselves that they wanted [the State Champion title],” Ure recalls, and this year, the community got to witness Ure and Magoun coach the team to dig deep, persevere together, and bring home Island School’s first HHSAA trophy.

Our High School Boys Volleyball team, with six seniors moving on from Voyager Athletics, won the KIF Championship title for the first time in Voyager Athletics history! The Wilcox Gym was packed in celebration for these boys.

SCIENCE OLYMPIAD

This year, our Middle School Science Olympiad team placed 3rd overall at the Hawaiʻi State Science Olympiad. Competing against Iolani and Highlands, our team of 12 competed in 24 events, placing 3rd in 15 of them. Our team of 12 stepped up to the plate with some students having 4-5 events each. Our team not only represented Island School but also represented Kauaʻi.

ANNUAL VOYAGER THE

A GIFT IN ANY AMOUNT MAKES A DIFFERENCE ething

Island School strives to provide the highest level of education to its students. All of our families benefit from your donation, which supports hands-on learning, experiential and innovative programs, enriching curricular materials, and creative indoor and outdoor spaces.

Tuition alone only covers some of what we need to give our students the best experience possible. Our fundraising efforts make a critical difference, and every one of your contributions—whether it’s a big donation or a few dollars—made a huge difference.

VOYAGER FUND

BETTER TOGETHER BECAUSE OF YOU!

At the end of the 2023-24 school year we have proven once again that when we work together, there’s no limit to what we can achieve! Our goal of $200,000 seemed ambitious, but thanks to your support, we have achieved and surpassed our ambitious goal ending the school year with $215,000. This achievement not only demonstrates how strong our community is but reaffirms our collective commitment to the success of our Island School as a whole.

With our eyes on the future, let’s carry this momentum forward to the 2024-25 school year, knowing that together, we can empower our students to reach new heights and make a positive difference right here on Kaua’i and beyond.

In Loving Memory of Alan King

Earlier this spring, long-time board member Alan King passed away. Besides Island School, Alan served on other non-profit boards including Wilcox Health Foundation, Kauaʻi Junior Golf Association, Kukuiolono Golf Course, and the Mission Childrenʻs Society. In addition to serving as the Island School high school golf coach, Alan co-chaired and supported the school’s iconic annual fundraising auction for many years. Island School’s community is so lucky to have known his kind words, generosity, and enthusiasm for many years.
