Banteer Stop Added To The Early Morning Train Iarnród Éireann in conjunction with the National Transport Authority has confirmed details of a new timetable from 10th December 2023.

The changes include a Banteer stop for the 05:45 Tralee/Cork train (Tues to Fri) and will now additionally serve Farranfore, Rathmore and Banteer.

This will mean you can now get train from Banteer at 7.04 be in Cork for 7.51 or in Dublin for 9.28.

This service is Tues to Fri each week.

Details of the new timetable are on the Ianród Eireann journey planner, as are Christmas and New Year service arrangements, as well as bookings.

Making It A Year To Remember

Castlemagner GAA are ending a successful year on the playing field after winning the Duhallow Junior Football title for the first time in 62 years with an ambitious fundraiser in The Charleville Park Hotel on Friday 29th December.

Following from a hugely successful Strictly Come Dancing held at the Charleville venue in March, the club has spread its wings to bring a hugely popular band to the north Cork venue. ­­Gina and The Champions are playing at The Charleville Park Hotel to round off a tour of Ireland where they have been celebrating the 50th anniversary of their formation.

Back in 1973, Cork won the All Ireland Senior Football title, the recently formed band with Mary Hurley aka (Gina) as lead singer were looking for a name and Gina and The Champions was the suggestion. The rest, as they say, is history. What followed for the band was decades of touring the highways and by-ways up and down the country, both in Ireland

and England.

Gina and The Champions have always had a great connection with their audience and have a very loyal following.

Supporting The Champions on the 29th December are a group of talented young traditional musicians from the Duhallow area.

The Crossfields Ceili Band, won the Under 15 Fleadh Ceoil in Mullingar last August under the stewardship of Alan Finn and they are relishing the prospect of taking to the stage.

Choral Society Goes Nationwide

Duhallow Choral Society would like to thank Deputy Michael Moynihan, The Ceann Comhairle, Seán Ó Fearghaí and Christina Lynch, staff of Leinster House for the privilege of performing at the Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony at the Houses of the Oireachtas on the 7th of December.

Supervalu Newmarket Duhallow Choral Society are also thrilled to share the exciting news that we appeared in an episode of Nationwide on the 13th of December. Many thanks to Zainab Boladale & Martin from RTE. We had a successful season of Christmas concerts in The Culturlann, Newmarket on the 1st of December and a joint Christmas concert with the Kerry Choral Union at St. Johns Church, Tralee on the 10th of December. The final concert of the season was our 2nd joint Christmas concert with the Kerry Choral Union at The Church of the Immaculate Conception, Kanturk on Sunday 17th December.

2024 is promising to be an exciting year ahead starting with

St. Patricks Day mass in Kanturk, a concert with a string orchestra on Easter Week, a concert with a Brazilian celloist player to support Kanturk hospital on May 7th and we’ve received a special invitation by the diocese of Cloyne to perform at Knock Basilica on May 12th.

We are always open to new members, we start back on the 9th of January 2024, we very much welcome new members to train for our new season of music in Spring 2024.

We are particularly looking for male voices.

THE HISTORY OF KISKEAM G.A.A €4 0

There was great excitement in Kiskeam recently at the launch of ‘The History of Kiskeam GAA Reeling in the years 1945-2020’.

The book was launched by GAA President Larry McCarthy and also in attendance was Cork County Board PRO Francis Kenneally, Duhallow Board Chairman, Stephen Lynch and Secretary Liam Buckley.

The book is dedicated to Club President, John P Murphy who has done trojan work within the club and initially started gathering information on the club’s history during the 70’s and 80’s. This work was then passed onto Donie Cronin who continued to compile the club’s history year on year and put in huge volume of work to ensure the publication of the book.

The publication contains 550 pages and 267 photographs, and outlines every year of the club since its foundation in 1947 with interesting facts and figures throughout the club’s history.

Donie Cronin outlined the many achievements over the 75 years and this book is a celebration of

Community News Rathcoole Rovers recently launched a sponsorship partnership with E. Tarrant and Sons Skoda dealership, Banteer.

Under the new stewardship of Chris Tarrant, Rathcoole Rovers unveiled their new uniform kit. They recently achieved a 3-1 victory against Watergrasshill. With E. Tarrant and sons on their side, they are hoping to achieve great success in the new season.

Tim Murphy took a stunning drone shot of Boherbue The Children’s Christmas Fair at Ballyhass was a fantastic achievement! In the two hours they were open, they raised over €800 towards the Castlemagner Community playground. The event saw children from schools as well as small businesses selling some gorgeous homemade crafts all for a wonderful cause.

The huts were warm and cosy, and a wonderful day was had by all.

Another Christmas Cracker

Ballydesmond musician/singer Sheila Fitzgerald presents a brand new single and video of the old classic Christmas in Killarney.

The single and video were arranged and produced by Sheila and her partner Mike Sheehan at the couple’s studio in Ballydesmond. Sheila’s cousin Pat Fleming and his cousin Conor Daly added accordion and fiddle, giving the song an authentic Sliabh Luachra traditional arrangement.

The video was filmed at Deenagh Lodge and downtown Killarney and Sheila extended her thanks to Niall Kelleher as well as videographer Ita Fitzgerald and her crew.

Sheila Fitzgerald and Mike Sheehan are veterans of the music scene and are well known throughout Ireland and further afield, and 2023 has added

extensively to their resume.

Sheila enjoyed a performance at the Men Of The South exhibition in the Crawford gallery in Cork city, while on march 17th the couple headlined the St. Patrick’s day parade in Mallow. With concerts in churches, choirs, and even Kanturk and Kenmare Marts alongside releasing and recording, the two are unstoppable!

The standout event of the year was an invitation to perform at Áras An Uachtaráin in April for President Higgins and Mrs. Higgins and afterwards to enjoy lunch with the president, Mrs. Higgins and Áras staff.

All of that without even counting the Christmas Party season!

On a final note, Sheila said “we want to wish everybody a happy Christmas and an amazing 2024, thank you all for requesting

our songs on radio stations countrywide and for coming to see us at our gigs, your support is really appreciated” The video of Christmas in Killarney will be aired on Sky TV on Christmas day on the Hot Country Show, Sky channel 588, free to air channel Faith World TV and Freeview 261 internet TV UK.

Walking Into The New Year

By ALANNAH O’CALLAGHAN On Saturday 9th of December, the IRD Walking Group once again took to Mount Hillary to enjoy the 8km Father Murphy Loop.

Meeting at 11am, we set off along the forestry track with one of our largest groups yet, with a leader in the front and another in the back.

Everyone set off at their own pace enjoying the company and the beauty of Mount Hillary.

Following 2 days of rain, we were blessed to have a lovely bright and dry morning. The first bit of this walk is always the hardest; while the ground underfoot is good and firm there is a long incline.

Just after the long uphill stretch there is a lovely gap in the trees,

some of us took a breather and admired the view. After this its mostly downhill, and the views get better as the trees clear giving you views towards the Banteer side of the hill.

We arrived back to the carpark just in time, the heavens opened and for the first time that morning it poured. There were a few who stayed sheltering under an open boot to enjoy the well-deserved hot cuppa and chocolate biscuits!

For anyone who is interested in joining future walks keep an eye on the website and for anyone who loves making New Year’s resolutions, maybe you could think about adding one or two walking ones to your list – here are 5 suggestions below:

•

Join a walking group.

There are walking groups popping up all over Cork now, they are a great way to meet new people but also to motivate yourself to actually get out the door during the day.

•

Walk a long-distance trail.

We have the love Duhallow Way locally, but there are many others around the country, you can find them all on the National Trails Register. While this may seem intimidating, many of these trails can be walked in sections, so take a look and see if you are up for the challenge!

•

Clean up.

Pick up 1 piece of litter you see on each walk you go on. If one person sees you doing this it can also help start a chain reaction, be the change you want to see.

• Get out!

Get out and have a brisk walk for 10 minutes at lunch or after work. Even a short 10 minute walk does wonders for you physical and mental health!

•

Explore somewhere new.

You don’t have to go far to explore a new place, around Duhallow we have a variety of trails you may not have walked before - you can find them on our website.

The Bosses Christmas Party The boss threw a big Christmas party He laid out a very fine spread But instead of a nice celebration He met with the squad car instead.

So be careful when pouring the measures Keep the brandy away from the boss For he will end up losing his licence For the Bandon squad is at the cross.

They ordered him out of his car And they asked him to walk a straight line It was a difficult task for the boss after ten double brandies plus wine.

It was a costly night for the boss For the meal cost him fifty a plate And for one year they took away his licence And a four hundred fine to the state.

So be careful when pouring the measures Keep the brandy away from the boss For he will end up losing his license For the Bandon squad is at the cross.

Santa Visits IRD

Santa and Mrs. Claus came to IRD Duhallow Afterschools to meet the kids and enjoy the artwork made for them.

Once the kids had dinner and homework, they got to enjoy games and face painting,which was done

by Aileen Power. Finally, they got to meet the most famous couple in the world. Santa told all the children how good they had been all year and to be in bed early Christmas eve. He wished us all here in IRD a merry christmas and happy new year!

Community News Kanturk and District Community Council and Tina Dunstan of Cherryblossoms Childcare are delighted to announce the DECEMBER PERSON OF THE MONTH AWARD: Tom Lofts Tom has for years given his time along with other volunteers in the Kanturk fishing club teaching the art of fishing to lots of youngsters. He also gave his time painting the temperance Hall amongst other things.

Congratulations Tom. A very worthy and deserving winner.

Cancer Connect Comes To Kanturk

Cancer Connect has been bringing people to cancer treatment for over a decade. Originally offering the service from West Cork, demand from the rest of Cork was so great that the service is now offered throughout the county. A team of volunteers bring people from their own homes to radiotherapy, chemotherapy and cancer related appointments every day.

Passengers are drivers are often from the same community, making it a completely local service.

People use Cancer Connect for different reasons. They may not have their own car, family may be away or working, or they may be simply too unwell to drive. Radiotherapy is daily and is exhausting. Helen O’Driscoll, Manager of Cancer Connect, said ‘driving people to and from their appointments makes dealing with cancer that bit easier. Often passengers don’t have a support system around them and having a friendly face at the door makes

Board members, staff and drivers at the launch of the 2 new vehicles in Kanturk facing treatment in Cork a little less overwhelming. Passengers can use the service from investigation stage to recovery and check up stage’.

The volunteers that drive use their own car, and until recently, a car loaned by Dan Twomey of Waterpower. Use of a car in Kanturk made it easier for volunteers and the driving panel grew substantially in the area.

Cancer Connect are so pleased to announce that there are now 2 vehicles available to the volunteer drivers in the Duhallow and North Cork region!! An 8 seater is available for the radiotherapy run, passengers can be collected in Rockchapel daily and brought through Newmarket and into CUH and Bon Secours daily.

Everyone attending radiotherapy is welcome to use this free and

confidential transport. Where 8 passengers can travel together for the same radio treatment, a car is now also available for one to one transport. This is for one to one transport, and can bring people to Consultant appointments, scans, chemo etc., again always free and coinfidential. Dan Murphy, a Director on the Board of Cancer Connect, said ‘having 2 vehicles available will have a huge impact in the area.

Comfortable and reliable, the car and the 8 seater will ensure that no one struggles to get to their cancer treatment in Cork’.

Cultures Combine For The Love of Music

On a lovely Sunday evening, 19th November an international cultural event took place in Rockchapel.

Bruach Na Carriage accommodated local performers as well as guests and performers from Ukraine that night.

In warm and friendly atmosphere of the event there were songs, dances, and instrumental music.

Performers of all ages took part and all the guests had an opportunity to dive into Irish national culture.

Then our friends from Ukraine, that were invited to the evening presented their national songs in return.

A new fabulous tradition of friendly intercultural gatherings was born that night through music.

Santa Brings Us All Together Saturday 2nd December was a magical morning in Millstreet where over 90 children and their parents attended the IRD Duhallow Multicultural Christmas event. The morning activities included decorating gingerbread cookies, arts and crafts, facepainting and meeting the man himself... Santa. It was a lovely morning for children and families from different countries living in Duhallow to come together to celebrate Christmas and promote interculturalism. At this time of year it is so important as a community that we come together to support the integration of migrants who have chosen to move here as well those seeking refuge and asylum in Duhallow. This event was supported under the Social Inclusion Community Activation Programme.

Wishes to recruit Rural Recreation Officer The RRO will represent a unique resource locally for providing best practice in trail maintenance, management, marketing and the development of a broad range of rural recreation and activity tourism products. The RRO is responsible for coordinating and overseeing the management and enhancement of the Walks Scheme walks and trails, assisting in the marketing and promotion of other trails and assisting local communities to research, plan and develop new routes. The RRO shall also assist in the completion of the maintenance plan and conduct trail inspections for the purposes of the Walks Scheme. The RRO is fundamental to the process of brokering support for access, facilitating product development and unlocking the known social and economic potential of rural recreation and activity tourism. The RRO is essential to ensure the continued delivery of the National Outdoor Recreation Strategy objectives.

Applicants must:

Hold a relevant third level qualification (Outdoor Education/Recreation, Tourism/Recreation or Rural/Community Development or a related field) and a minimum of 2 years’ experience OR have 5 years’ experience in a relevant field.

Experience of project management.

Knowledge of GPS, map reading, route planning and navigation.

Excellent Computer Skills, knowledge of GIS applications such as qGIS, ArcGIS is desirable.

Possess excellent understanding of needs of farmers & landowners and have at least 12 months experience of engaging and working with farmers.

Good communication and interpersonal skills.

Experience promoting and encouraging the development, delivery and improvement of recreational projects, infrastructure and activities with a focus on trails.

Flexible approach to working hours, some evening work may be required.

Ability to work under their own initiative and also to work in association with agencies, individuals and groups associated with trail development and tourism within North Cork.

Knowledge and interest in natural heritage and the environment.

The position is Full Time and will be based in our office in the James O’Keeffe Institute, Newmarket, Co. Cork. The contract is a fixed term contract.

What to do when you can’t get a Job Interview

Most advice around job searching links back to when you get inside the door for an interview.

Sometimes you can’t even get an interview and that can be very demoralising. Here are five tips on what to do if you find yourself in this situation.

1. Look after yourself: Take a break from the computer and job searching and do something you like doing. Ensure you’re getting enough sleep and look at linking in with supportive friends and family.

2. Review your CV: Spending time away from your CV can allow you to come at it with fresh eyes. Check that all your contact details are up to date. Send it to a friend to review. Ask yourself is it clearly laid out and does it sell your skills well. Look at including a personal statement that front loads your suitability for the particular job that you are applying for.

3. Network: Getting out and networking is not easy to do, especially if your work search activities have not been going well. Look for Industry events; there are many general ones that crop up over the course of the year, use these to find more focused opportunities in your particular area.

Being told to join a club might be the last thing some people might want to hear but being involved in a club can open up good networking opportunities and be a nice way of doing something that you like.

Volunteering for a short period of time, without taking on too much (only agree to doing what you feel you are currently capable of) can be a great way of broadening your network.

4. Find a mentor: One of the best things to do is to find someone in your particular industry that can be a help to you. Their opinion is something to be valued and they might be able to point you in the right direction. I found my mentor through volunteering, and

it saved me at least five years in career development. Other ways to find one could be reaching out on social media and asking to link in for a coffee. The worst that can happen is that they might say no.

5. Use your social welfare supports to your advantage: If you are new to an area the idea of joining a club or volunteering might be the last thing you feel like doing so the next best thing is to use your current social welfare supports to your advantage. Enquire about Community Employment (CE) and Tús, Local Area Employment Services (LAES) schemes. Explore self-referral options to these programmes. Enquire at your local office about the Training Support Grant (TSG) as it may be available to assist you in upskilling. The main thing is that you will be engaging with people who will help you find work, and improve your job seeking skills.

Christmas in my country (Angola) is the most beautiful and busy time in the country. At this time, houses are decorated in every way, and for those who have little means for professional decoration, they use what they have, including paper, the streets are decorated by young people and children from the community.

Children don’t celebrate Christmas with old clothes and hair, people have to buy new clothes for their children. Christmas dinner is held on the 24th. On the 25th, most families go to church in the morning and then there is a parade of children in the streets showing off their clothes and hair. Young people play music in the streets and everyone celebrates the birth of Christ with lots of joy and dancing.

Transition Year Students Learn about 50 Years of the EU

In 1973 Ireland joined the European Economic Community, an organisation that evolved into today’s European Union. Over the past 50 years, EU membership has been transformative for Ireland.

The EU Single Market provides opportunities to live, study, work and do business across Europe.

It has laid the basis for better environmental protection, stronger workers’ rights, and support for farmers. EU membership has helped Ireland to become more diverse, inclusive, and equal. It has also helped support peace on the island of Ireland.

Throughout the month of November Transition Year students from Scoil Phobail Slibah Luachra Rathmore, Millstreet Community School and Scoil Mhuire Kanturk participated in a fantastic project which looked at the impact of 50 years of EU membership on Ireland and Duhallow. As part of these Communicating Europe workshops students learned about projects supported through EU funds that have enhanced the Duhallow area. Students also were given an opportunity to reflect on Ireland as a modern EU member state, the recent population growth in the Duhallow area and the changes

The Kids Go To Uni!

The pupils from 4th,5th & 6th class visited UCC on October 19th for a guided tour of the University. The children had a very enjoyable day on the university grounds , exploring the campus and many of the interesting buildings there , including the Lewis Glucksman Gallery, the Stone Corridor, the Main Quadrangle and the Crawford Observatory, The pupils were prenoted with certificates on their “Graduation” at the end of the tour and we hope that many of them will return in years to come and graduate once more!

BADMINTON BLITZ The boys and girls of the school took to the badminton courts in Banteer for the Blitz for the National Schools in the area. Well done to the boys and girls played well and enjoyed the day immensely.

EIP Update

Duhallow Farming for Blue Dot Catchments Final Update The Duhallow Farming for Blue Dot Catchments was a five-year (2019-2023) agri-environment scheme that worked with over 100 farmers in the Allow River Catchment. The aim of the project was to protect and restore blue dot (high-status objective) rivers, including the Allow, Dalua and Owenanare, and to create a blueprint of how to farm with nature to protect water quality.

The project successfully trialled a hybrid results-based payments approach: • Results-based Payments – farmers received a payment that was determined by the quality of a measure to protect water quality (e.g., wet grassland, riparian woodland, vegetated in-drain buffers) • Additional Proposed Works – farmers could apply for capital funding to install measures on their farms that would reduce pollution potential (e.g., farm road upgrades, hedgerow planting, alternative drinking sources)

What are blue dot catchments?

Under the Water Framework Directive, all waterbodies in EU member states must achieve ‘good’ or ‘satisfactory’ ecological water quality status by 2027.

However, some waterbodies have been assigned a highstatus objective which means that they must achieve the highest ecological water quality status by 2027. These high-status objective waterbodies are known as blue dots, and these represent around 9% of all waterbodies in Ireland.

They are an important for several reasons. For example, they serve as an ark where sensitive species survive during pollution events and can then recolonise the polluted water downstream when it is restored. A good example of this is the Freshwater Pearl Mussel, whose survival is dependant on high-status water quality.

EIP Update Additional Proposed Works

WFD status, compared to just 57% of the catchment area at the beginning of the project, as well as 53% of total rivers in Ireland.

Through the additional proposed works system, the following projects were part- to full-funded: • 37 Farm road upgrades • 12 sustainable crossing points • 15 strategically located ponds/ sediment ponds • 3000m watercourse protection (fencing) • 138 water troughs • 4 solar-powered pumps • 6 solar-powered fencers • 39ha multi-species swards trials

Tree Planting

The project team linked up with LAWPRO each winter to help with funding for additional tree and hedge planting. In addition to planting done by farmers through results-based measures, the project funded the purchase and planting of 2.4km of hedgerows (11,800 trees) and 7,000 trees in strategic locations to reduce runoff from fields to watercourses.

Upscaling the project

the project catchment area improved in Water Framework Directive Status (WFD) from the beginning to the end of the project. This included three waterbodies that improved from good to high status (ALLOW_030, OWENANARE_020, OWENKEAL_020) and one that improved from poor to moderate (ALLOW_060). This means that 81% of the catchment area’s rivers are now achieving their

While the project has been a huge success for the catchment area, another important part of EIP projects is sharing the findings, lessons learned, and innovation with others as well as feeding into new policies and schemes.

Many of the project’s measures have been replicated by new agrienvironment schemes and through different projects. The project team regularly hosted farm walks and talks to both agricultural and environmental agencies, in Ireland and further afield. The project was featured on the last ever episode of Ecoeye in February last, and the project team are currently finalising a video series that will showcase several demo farms.

The team have also produced a book of measures that is available for free online and at the James O Keeffe Institute in Newmarket. A full project report is currently being prepared.

School Visits

Over 30 school visits to national and secondary schools in Duhallow were conducted during the project. School books were designed by the project team, printed, and distributed to schools.

Through these visits, several hundred Duhallow pupils learned about the biodiversity and quality of their local rivers and streams, including their significance as blue dot rivers.

Alice O’Brien Counselling, Newmarket It began to look a lot like Christmas a few weeks ago. By now, you most likely have the turkey defrosting, Bounty is the only sweets left in the box of Heroes and you have heard Chris Rea driving home for Christmas a million times.

As I’ve shared my thoughts on mental health throughout the year, I decided to combine mental health and Christmas, so here is a few to finish the year with: · If you are under the same roof as last year, if you are surrounded by the same people doing the same traditions, then you are one of the lucky ones. Life has been hard for

some this year, losing their homes, or grieving loved ones. So, look around you and enjoy the scene. · If your children woke up in a warm bed this morning and went to school wearing their shiny Christmas jumpers, with fully belly’s and health- then you have won the lotto in life. · Sometimes we can grieve experiences this time of yearmaybe your house full of teens no longer want to listen out for Santaits ok to miss the days that were.

You can make new traditions, have new festive adventures but hold on to your memories also, they will bring you warmth. · If you become over-whelmed by all the fun, all the visitors, all the noise, remember, the Island Wood never closes, it is there, ready for you to take time-out surrounded

by the sounds of nature when you need it. · Lastly, you deserve a peaceful Christmas no matter what has happened all year. So, if that means refusing some invites or avoiding some people- you have to look after your own mental health, especially over Christmas.

Of course, as this is the last issue of 2023, I would like to thank everyone who has read my ramblings and approached me to discuss them. I also want to thank all at the IRD, most of all, Tadhg, Caleb and Louise for looking after me so well.

Christmas - News of Great Joy

By TOM DENNEHY “And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night.

An angel of the Lord appeared to them and the glory of the Lord shone around them and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, ‘Do not be afraid. I bring you news of great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David, a Saviour has been born to you.

He is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you; you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger.’Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, ‘Glory to God in the highest Heaven and on Earth peace to those on whom His favour rests.’ Luke 2. 8-14.

So it was that the shepherds were the first to hear about the birth of Jesus. They had no standing in the community and were looked down on by everyone.

Yet it was to these shepherds that the angels appeared. It was these shepherds that God chose to receive the first invitation to meet with the newborn Messiah.

It was these shepherds that set a beautiful example of faith that can inspire us today.

At first, the shepherds may seem like a strange choice, but if God had gone to Caesar or Herod or anyone else in power, they would have tried to turn this miraculous event to their advantage. The shepherds? They had absolutely nothing to gain, and certainly nothing to lose. They were empty vessels, waiting to be filled to overflowing with God’s joy. They were proof that God’s message is for everyone, from the highest to the lowest, from the faithful churchgoer to the seeker

to the skeptic. God’s word is for everyone. With God, everyone is loved equally and unconditionally.

When the angels had left them and went back to Heaven, the shepherds said to one another , “Let us go as far as Bethlehem and see what the Lord has made known to us.” So they came hurriedly and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in a manger . On seeing Him, they related what they had been told about the child; and all were astonished on hearing the shepherds. Luke 2;15-18.

The shepherds were alone in the fields, they were not distracted, they were not worrying about finishing their Christmas shopping or finalising travel plans. So when God called them they were attentive and responsive. They listened. Are we listening this Christmas season to what God is calling us to do?

After the Christmas season we too will return to our “fields and flocks,” our normal routines and responsibilities. But we are not the same people we were before.

Christ has come. God is with us.

Therefore let us go forth humbly as the shepherds did, forever changed , transformed by the experience of Christmas, praising and glorifying God and letting people know about the good news of Christ by the way we live our lives.

“When they saw this they made known what had been told them about the child. The shepherds

returned glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen.”

The question is how will we respond to the message of Jesus born amongst us as a little baby on Christmas morning. Will we go like the shepherds and share the good news to everyone we meet? Our world was never in more need of good news. Can we respond to a well known Christmas song? “Go, tell it on the mountain, over the hills and everywhere, go tell it on the mountain, that Jesus Christ is born.”

Let us hope that the sound of that beautiful Christmas song, Silent Night, can reverberate over the war torn areas at Christmas.

As the Germans and the British forces put down their arms and sang songs in the dark and muddy trenches on the western front on Christmas Eve 1914, let us hope that those parts of the world at war will lay down their arms and welcome the Prince of Peace.

headlines: parts of Africa, Asia, South America all have conflicts that we don’t readily hear about but are a reality all the same.

People are people, all created in the image of God, whatever their race or their nationality or their colour.

In our own joy and in our own prayers this Christmas and, especially when we gather together for our Christmas Mass, let our fervent prayer be that the wishes of the angels on that first Christmas night be fulfilled that there be peace on earth among all people of goodwill.

As always I want to share with you the blessings of the season.

Kanturk Golf Club

Kanturk Golf Club Still Swinging in its 50th Year

Kanturk Golf Club celebrates it’s Golden Jubilee in 2023. Thanks to the initiative of two local business men, Derry Fitzpatrick and Andy Keating in the early 1970s, sufficient finance was raised which ensured that a deposit was placed on land for sale by the Finn Family in the townland of Garraveasgue.

The purchase was completed by a business group – Kanturk Golf Association - which organised the construction of a 9 hole golf course, the building of a clubhouse and in the early nineties extended

the course to eighteen holes.

Nowadays the clubhouse is the location for ‘Bobs on the Green.’

Membership of the club – male and female – is drawn from the town itself and surrounding areas and has grown from an original number of less than thirty to a present day number of over 550 including a thriving junior section of 162. The club caters for all age groups, and teams range from junior right up to senior level. In its fifty year existence, Kanturk Golf Club has experienced success at

county, provincial and All Ireland level.

Club Officers for the Jubilee Year were Captain Conor Madigan, Lady Captain Ursula Desmond, President Michael Browne and Lady President Breda McElligot. A successful book-launch of a history of the club was held in August and copies of Kanturk Golf Club 1973 - 2023, can be purchased from the from the club itself and from all local shops.
