C

reative but pragmatic, united by the same spirit and by the same vision of internationalisation of their businesses, but above all always with a suitcase ready to seize any opportunity: they are the “entrepreneurs on the go”, those familiar faces met at the boarding areas of airports, heading for the same places. The reason for their trips is often the participation in a trade fair.

Looking for work and opportunities, contaminating one’s own ideas by getting to know different markets and cultures, presenting or finding innovations abroad, especially at exhibitions, is a winning mindset for contemporary entrepreneurs. Staying within the borders of one’s own country and tending to one’s own garden, on the other hand, has not been a winning strategy for decades now. Even those who have conquered a niche market know that location is not a relevant parameter for their sales.

For years, we have been debating whether exhibitions are still a useful tool for companies looking for new customers. Of course, before the advent of the web, participating in a trade fair as exhibitors or visitors was the only way to find new products, new customers, and new partners. Nonetheless, in the last few years, we have been witnessing a process of maturation and transformation of the fair system, where the main challenges are internationalisation and contamination with events of different nature, such as conferences and symposia offering a scientific/technological approach to complete the commercial promotion aspects. The world of trade fairs is completely reinventing itself, taking advantage of digitalisation (as I wrote in my last year’s editorial) and creating occasions where they did not exist before.

Germany was able to take advantage of this transformation process, thus assuming a leading role at the European and global levels. It invested heavily in the modernisation of its exhibition centres, found new business models, and succeeded in fielding winning promotion strategies able to attract many visitors to its trade fairs.

Based on all these reasons, we can safely say that trade fairs are still a very important tool for finding new customers. As we aware of this, for the past three years we have been producing an annual calendar of all the exhibitions, conferences, and events involving the surface treatment industry.

Divided into sectors related to the themes of our magazines, the trade fairs are listed in chronological order with their logo, location, dates, website, and above all area of interest, in order to help readers find their way around the multitude of events held each year around the world. Like last year, at the end of the calendar you will find a list of suggested partners able to help you with the organisational aspects of participating in a fair.

I would like to end with a reflection on this. Whereas it is true that exhibitions are still important to find new customers, they should be exploited in the correct way, aware that a lack of preparation will result in no return on investment. A passive approach is no longer sufficient. Relying on the promotion made by the trade fair is not enough to generate new contacts. Participation in an exhibition must be planned, organised carefully, and promoted to one’s own current and potential customers through all modern communication channels.
